Peggy Shea
Southern Shores - Peggy Anne Shea, 75, died Monday, April 12, 2004 at her residence. Mrs. Shea was born in Morristown, NJ and was a homemaker. Mrs. Shea was the most beautiful soul and touched many people beyond her world of influence. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Shea was the daughter of the late Leslie Watson and Grace Tabor Layer Shorter and the wife of John Joseph Shea for 52 years.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters; Kathie Rolleri of Modesto, CA, Terry Harrell and husband Brett of Salinas, CA; two sons, Chris Shea and wife Betsy of Southern Shores and Bill Shea and wife, Valarie of Livermore, CA; one sister, Betsy Trost of Asheville, NC and one brother, Bob Shorter of Winston-Salem, NC; grandchildren, Nicole, Sean, Sarah, Jason, Kelly, Kara, Joe and Tony.
She was a past president of Outer Banks Forum For the Lively Arts, past president of the Duck Woods Women’s Association, a member of the Beach Quilters and the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. She was also a volunteer for Dare County Hospice and the Hotline. She was a Volunteer Coordinator for Providence Speech and Hearing in Orange, California and a past vice president of the Park Ridge, NJ Board of Education and volunteered at the Park Ridge Library.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church on Friday, April 16th at 10:00 AM with Father Klaus officiating. Burial will take place at the Southern Shores Cemetery immediately following the service. The family extends an invitation to friends at the residence of Mr. Shea for a receiption following the burial. A Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 6:30 to 7:30 at Twiford’s Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dare County Home, Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 1000, Manteo, NC 27954.

Mathew Leigh Sheep, Jr.
Mathew Leigh Sheep, Jr., 80, of 403 West Main Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, February 2, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Elizabeth City, NC to the late Mathew Leigh and Gertrude Foreman Sheep and was the grandson of the late S. L. Sheep that Sheep-Harney Elementary School is named after. He was a retired self employed photographer, a member of First United Methodist Church, and attended Duke University and Baltimore Institute of Photography.
Mr. Sheep is survived by his wife, Betty Rogers Sheep of the home; two sons, Matthew Laurence Sheep of Cincinnati, OH and M. Laird Sheep of Elizabeth City, NC and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted on Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Clyde Denny and Pastor Max Edwards. The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the service and at other times at the residence of M. Laird Sheep, 700 Dryridge Road, Elizabeth City, NC.

George Key
George Russell Key, Sr., age 70, of 1309 West Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, November 30, 2002 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Pasquotank County, son of the late George and Mary Bray Key, and was the husband of Marjorie Hall Key of the residence. He was a retired employee of Elizabeth and Suburban Gas Co., had been in the U.S. Army, and a Baptist.
Besides his wife, Mr. Key is survived by: three daughters, Mary White and husband Henry of Elizabeth City, Alma Gause and husband George of Hertford, NC, and Linda Layden and husband Russell of Elizabeth City; two sons: Romie Brickhouse and wife Carolyn, and George Key, Jr. all of Elizabeth City; two sisters: Mae Tarkington of Camden, NC, and Edith Weidner of Kentucky; twelve grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be conducted Monday, December 2, 2002 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street. The family will be at the residence.
Marge J. Gregory
Chesapeake – Marge J. Gregory, 86, died Friday January 23rd, 2004. She was a homemaker and loving mother and will be missed by family and friends.
She is survived by her son Gene H. Gregory Sr. and wife Faye Gregory of Windsor, Va.; grandchildren Joy (Keith) Mills, Gene H. (Lynne) Gregory Jr., Everett (Michelle) Brown, Cindy (Eric) Dixon; great grandchildren Jonathan, Jacob, Garett.
A graveside service will be held in Moyock Cemetery on Saturday, January 31st, 2004 at 11 AM.
Frances Thomas Scroggs
Native of Norfolk, VA
Frances Thomas Scroggs, age 82 of 1607 Edgewood Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Norfolk, VA, daughter of the late Hunter V. and Ruth Burroughs Thomas and was the widow of John S. Scroggs. She was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church, Fleet Reserve Auxiliary, and Chief Petty Officers Auxiliary.
Mrs. Scroggs is survived by a daughter, Margaret S. Brothers of Elizabeth City, NC; a son Jim Williams of Tampa, Fl; and three grandchildren, Josh Brothers, John Brothers, and Carly Meads. She was preceded in death by a brother, William Thomas.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2003 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Rev. John H. Dutton, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 and at other times at the residence. JOHN W. SAWYER, Jr.
Formerly of Currituck, NC
John W. Sawyer, Jr., 91, formerly of Currituck, NC died Tuesday evening, March 23, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Sawyer was born in Norfolk, VA to the late John W. and Julia Stokley Sawyer and was the widower of the late Frances Ayers Sawyer. He was a retired ship fitter with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and a member of the Rehoboth Baptist Church.
Mr. Sawyer is survived by three daughters, Diane C. Sawyer of Grandy, NC, Deborah A. Sawyer of Manteo, NC and Susan Meghdapour of Dallas, TX; two sons, John W. Sawyer III of Roanoke, VA and Hugh Sawyer of Atlanta, GA; one brother, William Sawyer of Virginia Beach, VA; 11 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ruth Carroll and a brother Linwood Sawyer.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, March 26, 2004, at 2:00pm in the Rehoboth Baptist Church by Rev. Frank Thigpen. Burial will follow in the Laurel Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Poplar Branch. The family will receive friends and relatives at the home of his daughter, Diane C. Sawyer, 136 Charleston Dr., Grandy, NC Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00pm. Grover Sawyer, Jr.
Powells Point, NC - Grover Cleveland Sawyer, Jr., age 82 of 433 North Spot Road, Powells Point, NC, died Friday, April 2, 2004, in Guardian Care Nursing Home. He was a native of Currituck County, NC, and was the son of the late Grover Cleveland Sawyer, Sr., and Bernie Parker Sawyer, and was the husband of Nan Forbes Sawyer of the residence.
Mr. Sawyer served in the US Navy and was a retired Postmaster at Harbinger Post Office, and was a member of Powells Point Christian Church.
Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Joy Cope of Grifton, NC, and Lisa Van Curen of Camden, NC; one son Clevie Sawyer of Spot, NC; one sister Marguerite Foster of Elizabeth City, NC; six grandchildren Laura, Jamie, Rachel, Rebekah, Annah, and Krista; one great grandchild, Ahlyn.
A graveside service will be Sunday, April 4, 2004 at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Roger Cope officiating. Burial will follow in the Powells Point Christian Church Cemetery. The family will friends immediately following the service. At other times the family will be at the residence. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Thomas Ray Sawyer, Sr.
Camden, NC - Thomas Ray Sawyer, Sr., age 64, of Camden, NC, died Wednesday, August 6, 2003. He was born in Camden County son of the late Ray Patterson and Betty Lilly Sawyer. He was the husband of Ann Riggs Sawyer of the residence. Mr. Sawyer was a retired Salvage Yard Manager and attended New Beginnings Assembly of God Church. He was one of the original members of the Pasquotank Rescue Squad and served in the National Guard.
Besides his wife he is survived by one daughter, Lynn Sawyer Parks and her husband, Vandy of PA; two sons, Thomas Ray Sawyer, Jr. and William Daniel Sawyer both of Camden, NC; five sisters, Jeanette McPherson, Connie Latham, Joyce Gagne, Gladys Allen, and Sadie Outlaw; three brothers, J.K. Sawyer, Ronnie Sawyer, and David Sawyer; one granddaughter, Bethannie Yvonne Parks of PA. Mr. Sawyer was predeceased by one sister, Annie Geneva Allen.
A funeral service will be Saturday, August 9, 2003, at 11:00 am in the New Beginnings Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Carroll Daniels officiating. Burial will follow in the Riggs Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel Friday evening 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. At other times the family will be at the residence. Donnie Scarborough
SOUTHERN SHORES, NC - CLEVELAND DONOVAN “DONNIE” SCARBOROUGH, 76, of Southern Shores, died Saturday, August 23, 2003 in a Chesapeake, VA hospital. Mr. Scarborough, born in Duck, NC was a retired Chief Boatswain’s Mate with the U. S. Coast Guard and served during WWII. He was also a commercial fisherman and a member of the Duck United Methodist Church. He was the son of the late Lewis and Leona Sandlin Scarborough.
Mr. Scarborough is survived by his wife, Iva Beacham Scarborough of the residence; a daughter, Lillie Scarborough Hussey of Kill Devil Hills, NC; a son Stephen Scarborough of Bowling Green, KY; three brothers, Gary Scarborough of Kitty Hawk, NC, Lewis “Tink” Scarborough of Kill Devil Hills, NC and Ronnie Scarborough of Richmond, VA; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the Duck United Methodist Church on Tuesday, August 26, 2003 at 11:00 am with Rev. David Clift officiating. Burial will follow in the Austin Cemetery, Kitty Hawk. The family will receive friends at the residence, 15 Circle Drive, Southern Shores.

Christine Felty Schott
Baltimore, MD native
Christine Louise Felty Schott, age 35, of 111 Joshua Circle, Hertford, NC, died Monday, October 6, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Schott, a native of Baltimore, MD, was the wife of David Paul Schott of the residence and the daughter of Evelyn Gwen Webster of Elizabeth City, NC, and Claude Cecil Felty of Baltimore, MD. She was office manager at Ricky’s Welding and a Catholic.
Besides her husband and parents, she is survived by her grandfather, Kenneth Webster, Sr.; three aunts, Barbara Lilly, Brenda Chrystal, and Patricia Webster; two uncles, Kenneth Webster, Jr., and Edward Webster; and nine cousins. She was predeceased by a sister, Cynthia Lynn Felty; a grandmother, Ruth Webster; and an uncle, Gerald Webster.
A graveside funeral service will be Friday, October 10, 2003, at 10:00 AM in Memory Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Beverly Mercer officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Frank Schmitt
Kill Devil Hills, NC - Frank Schmitt, son of the late Geneva and Johann Schmitt, died Monday, February 2, 2004 in Nags Head. He was born in Kottenheim, Germany in 1941. This past week he celebrated his 90th birthday with loving friends.
In 1924, Frank’s father, mother, and brother came to the states and settled in Oswego, NY. Frank graduated from Oswego College, followed by a B.A. from New York University and a Master’s Degree from Hunter College and numerous courses in education.
In 1943, Frank met his wife Evelyn and they were married
in 1945. He taught in Chappaqua, NY schools for two years and then transferred to Ossing, NY schools where he taught for thirty-three years as a chair of the History Department and later in Guidance.
Besides his wife, Frank is survived by one son, Barry Schmitt; one daughter, Katha Schmitt Sachs; and six grandchildren, Jennifer, Erik, Kurt, Kevin, Erika, and Lindsay.
Frank’s interests were classical music, painting, choir, church activities, piano, organ, and travel. He enjoyed the various activities of the Outer Banks and Fairfield Beach, CT.
He will be sorely missed by his devoted wife Evelyn and his many friends who remember his dry sense of humor.

Shirley Schleter
Kitty Hawk, NC - Shirley Cole Schleter, 74, passed away on November 7, 2003 at her residence. Mrs. Schleter was born in Chilhowie, Virginia and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church and the Duck Woods Country Club. She was the daughter of the late Bayard Cole and Mattie Farzier Cole and the wife of John C. Schleter of the home.
Besides her husband, she is survived by one son, James Chris Schleter of Torino, Italy; one brother, Tyler Farzier Cole of Chilhowie, Virginia.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church on Saturday, December 27, 2003 at 1:00 PM with Rev. Robert Fields officiating.

Kitty Hawk, NC - Shirley Cole Schleter, 74, died Friday, November 7, 2003 at her residence. Mrs. Schleter was born in Chilhowie, Virginia and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church and the Duck Woods Country Club. Mrs. Schleter was the daughter of the late Bayard and Mattie Frazier Cole and the wife of John C. Schleter of the home.
Besides her husband, she is survived by one son, James Christopher Schleter of Tireno, Italy and one brother, Tyler Frazier Cole of Chilhowie, VA.

Bonnie Scheuer
CHESAPEAKE – Bonnie Sue Peedin Roberts Scheuer, 53, died September 6, 2003. Mrs. Scheuer was born in Selma, NC to Hardy J. and Dorothy Kennedy Peedin. She was a professional photographer, but spent most of her time caring for and enjoying her family.
Besides her parents, Hardy and Dorothy of Elizabeth City, NC Mrs. Scheuer is survived by her husband, Harry Scheuer of Chesapeake; three sons, Jamie Roberts of VA Beach, David Roberts of Chesapeake and Harry Scheuer Jr. of Chesapeake; one daughter, Christine Whitaker of Wake Forrest, NC; two sisters, Barbara “Joan” Beale of Chesapeake and Joy Ann Fraioli of Edenton, NC; three brothers, William Peedin of Currituck, H. Fred Peedin of Chesapeake, and Jimmy Peedin of Colonial Heights, VA; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Twiford Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake on Wednesday at 1:00pm. Burial will follow at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m.
Ethel Scarborough
Duck, NC - Ethel Mae Kight Scarborough, 92, died Thursday, August 12, 2004 at her residence. Mrs. Scarborough was born in Coinjock, NC was a homemaker and a Protestant. She was the daughter of the late William Kight and the late Betty Kight and the widow of Levin Scarborough.
She is survived by two daughters, Elsie Scarborough of Duck and Betty S. Chason of Southern Shores; three sons, Fred Scarborough, Bobby Scarborough both of Spot, and Gerry Scarborough of Duck; eighteen grandchildren, twenty seven great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; she was preceded in death by two sons, Ben Scarborough and Lenwood Scarborough.
A graveside service will be held at Austin Cemetery on Sunday, August 15, 2004 at 3:00 PM with Rev. Robert Pitsch officiating.

Michel Scarborough
Frisco, NC - Michel Shane Scarborough, 36, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Scarborough was born in Elizabeth City, NC and was a commercial fisherman. He was a member of the Cape Hatteras United Methodist Church and a graduate of Hatteras High School. He was the son of Robert Edward “Bobby” Scarborough and the late Amanda Austin Scarborough.
He is survived by one son, Tanner Scarborough of Buxton; two sisters, Wendy Allen and Sara Slater, both of Frisco; two brothers, Robbie Scarborough of Frisco and Marvin Scarborough of Wilmington.
A memorial service will be held at the Hatteras United Methodist Church on Friday, July 2, 2004 at 3:00 PM with Rev. Charles Moseley officiating.

Roy Scarborough
Manteo, NC - Roy Rogers Scarborough, 60, died on Friday, June 25, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Scarborough was born in Manteo and was co-owner of Roy and Sons Auto Detailing and former manager of Queen’s Coach House Exxon for 28 years. He was a member of the Roanoke Island Baptist Church. He was the son of William Daniels of Virginia Beach, VA and the late Mary Scarborough Paige and was the husband of Bettie Brown Scarborough of the home.
Besides his wife and father, he is survived by three daughters, Glenda “Gigi” Umozurike of Moyock, Djuana “Muffin” Powers of Virginia Beach and Velissa “Lisa” Britton of Fayetteville; five sons, Roy D. Scarborough of Fayetteville, William E. “Tyke” Scarborough of Raleigh, Andra Gibbs of Belhaven, Johnathan Scarborough of Kill Devil Hills and Ika Gibbs of Fayetteville; two sisters, Erma Gore of Manteo and Ellen Johnson of Durham; one brother, Leon Daniels of Manteo; two step-mothers, Willa Daniels of Virginia Beach, Clarice Paige of Durham and sixteen grandchildren.
