Murray Seaton Smith

Murray Seaton Smith, age 89, of 217 Red Bank Road, Hertford, NC, died Sunday, May 30, 2004 at Guardian Care of Elizabeth City. He was born in Pasquotank County, son of the late Matthew Spivey and Mollie Brown Smith and was the husband of Verna Ruth Fidler Smith of Hertford, NC. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and U.S. Marines, having served during WWII, and was a Baptist.
Beside his wife, Mr. Smith is survived by two daughters, Katherine Jane and Mary Smith Burnett and husband John of Hertford, NC; a son, Dennis Habel and wife Betty of Hertford, NC; and two grandchildren, Marina Smith and Benjamin Smith. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Edna Newbern and Lillie Mae Yates, and a brother, Roscoe Smith.
A graveside service will be Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at 2:00 pm in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home before the service from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm, and at other times at the home place, 217 Red Bank Road, Hertford, NC. Malcolm Smith
Malcolm Chedsey Smith, 81, of Southern Shores, NC. died Friday, June 25, 2004, at Britthaven of the Outer Banks. He was born in Boston, MA and raised in Upper Montclair, NJ. Mr. Smith was an ME graduate of Brown University. He was a veteran of the US Navy and served as a Lieutenant, JG, in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theater of Operations. During his career, he worked 38 years for New Jersey Machine, Inc. and retired as Vice President of Midwest Operations. He had served as Sales Engineer, Midwest Sales Manager, National Sales Manager, and Director of Marketing and Sales. Mr. Smith was an aviation buff and had his private pilot's license with commercial/water ratings and was a plane owner for 23 years. He held a lifetime membership in the First Flight Society. He was a devoted member of the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church where he served two terms on the Sessions and two years as Clerk of the Sessions. For over ten years Mal was active in the Southern Shores Volunteer Fire Department serving as a Board member for several years. He belonged to the Duck Woods Country Club, and was active in many community projects.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of sixty years, Marjorie Freeman Smith of the residence; one daughter, Margaret K. Skinner and husband Paul of Wilmore, KY; one son, Jeffrey P. Smith and wife Joanne of Ringwood, NJ; four grandchildren, David M. Skinner and wife Rose Marie of Ionia, MI; Benjamin P. Skinner of Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Caleb D. Smith and Sarah E. Smith of Ringwood, NJ; and three great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted on Friday, July 2, 2004 at 11:00 AM at the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dr. Robert Fields, Jr. Burial will be in the Memorial Bible Garden. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 2199, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948 or to one's favorite charity.

Marshall Smith, Jr.
NAGS HEAD, NC - MARSHALL THOMAS SMITH, JR., 61, of Nags Head, NC died Sunday, February 8, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Smith was born in Norfolk, VA and was a Cable Lineman. He was a veteran, having served 10 years in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was the son of the late Marshall T. Smith, Sr. and the late Ruby Hartley Smith.
Mr. Smith is survived by a sister, Patty Lee Collins of Frederick, MD and a brother, Early Lawrence Smith of Milwaukee, OR.
A memorial service will be held at Twiford Colony Chapel, Manteo on Saturday, February 14, 2004 at 11:00 am. Cremated remains will be interred in Manteo Cemetery.

Joseph Barone
Elizabeth City, NC - Joseph Gene Barone, 79, of 407 Lane Drive, Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday, February 22, 2003 at Sentara Norfolk General. He was born in Philadelphia, PA to the late Antonio and Jemma Cori Barone and was the widower of Alice Lucille Smith Barone. He was a retired maintenance engineer, a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, and a veteran of the United States Navy having served during World War II.
Mr. Barone is survived by a daughter, Janice Dandar and husband Regis of Elizabeth City, NC and two grandchildren, Alicia Dandar of Charlotte, NC and Justin Dandar of Elizabeth City, NC.
A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date.

Fred Smith, Jr.
Fred Smith, Jr., age 76, of 422 Hickory Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, August 13, 2004 at his residence. He was a native of Pasquotank County, NC, and was the son of the late Fred Smith, Sr. and Marie Simons Smith Hurdle. He was a retired Equipment Operator for the NC Forestry Department; he served in the US Army, and was a Baptist.
He is survived by a special friend, Velma Cartwright of Elizabeth City, NC; one sister, Emma Fletcher and her husband Charles of Elizabeth City, NC; three brothers, Carlton Smith and his wife Ann of Sligo, NC, Harvey Hurdle and his wife Kathleen of Glenn Mills, PA, and Joseph Lenton “Joe Pete” Hurdle of Russellville, AK. He was predeceased by one sister, Doris Hoffman, and one brother, Charles M. Hurdle.
A funeral service will be Sunday, August 15, 2004, at 2:30 PM in Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. Burial will be at New Hollywood Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service. At other times the family will be at the residence, 422 Hickory Drive, Elizabeth City, NC.

Audrey Virginia Harrell Smithson

Audrey Virginia Harrell Smithson, age 76, of 587 343 North, Camden, NC, died Monday, May 5, 2003, in the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Smithson, a native of Perquimans County, was the wife of Hersey Smithson, Sr., of the residence and the daughter of the late Thomas Miles Harrell and Lizzie Nash Harrell. She was a homemaker and a member of Geneva Baptist Church.
Besides her husband she is survived by three daughters, Patsy Sivills and husband Bob of Camden, NC, Sue Lane of Elizabeth City, NC, and Sharon Dance and husband Jeffrey of Hertford, NC; one son, Hersey Smithson, Jr., of Monroe, NC; one sister, Hazel Jordan of Virginia Beach, VA; six grand children, Jennifer Gray, Stephanie Brickhouse, Lisa VanHoy, William Dance, Melissa Dance, and Walter Dance; two great grandchildren, Steven Brickhouse and Amber Brickhouse. She was predeceased by a grandson, Michael Dance and a sister Marvourneen Scott.
A memorial service will be Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at 4:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Glenn Greenway officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence and request memorial donations to the SPCA, PO Box 1772, Elizabeth City, NC, 27909.

Stephanie Sniegowski
Kill Devil Hills, NC - Stephanie Marie Burgess Sniegowski, 39, of Kill Devil Hills, NC, died Tuesday, January 27, 2004 at an Elizabeth City medical facility. Mrs. Sniegowski was born in Fredericksburg, VA and was a homemaker. She was a graduate of Stafford County High School. She was the daughter of Bradley Burgess of Key Largo, FL and Anita Adams of LaPlata, MD and was the wife of Gregory S. Sniegowski of the home.
Besides her parents and husband, she is survived by one son, Joshua Morgan Burgess of the home; a step son, Kavan Nelson of Chesapeake, VA; and one brother, Michael F. Burgess of Potomac Falls, VA.
A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2004 at 11:00 AM at the Ramada Plaza in Kill Devil Hills. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joshua Morgan Burgess Education Fund, C/O Greg Sniegowski, 2014 Norfolk Street, Kill Devil Hills, NC, 27948.

Wilbur Snow
KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. - WILBUR GRAHAM (WILL) SNOW, passed away, July 9, 2004, in Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville, N.C. after being ill for several months. Will was born August 6, 1934 in Virginia Beach, Virginia where he grew up.
Will and his wife Belle owned and operated the Buoy 9 Tavern on the Outer Banks for 25 years.
He is survived by his wife Belle of the home and his daughter, Christian of Virginia Beach.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Twiford Colony Chapel Manteo is handling arrangements.
Charles Snyder
Manteo, NC - Charles Robert Snyder, 62, died Monday, June 28, 2004 at a Nags Head medical facility. Mr. Snyder was born in Shamokin, PA, was a sub-contractor for floor covering and was a member of the Assembly of God Church. He was a veteran having served in Germany with the U.S. Army. He was the son of the late Margaret Lipsett Snyder and Charles M. Snyder of Paxinos, PA and was the husband of Connie Susanne Couch Snyder of the home.
Besides his father and wife, he is survived by two daughters, Christine (Chris) Stametz and husband, David, of Coal Township, Michelle Noble of Annapolis, MD; one son, Mark Snyder of Elysburg, PA; two step-children, Wendy Erdly of Forest Hill, NY and Carl Erdly and his wife, Catherine of Quincy, MA; three sisters, Pat Flore and husband, Ken, Darlene Horne and husband Roger, Peggy Yarger and husband Robert, all of Paxinos; two brothers, Ken Snyder and wife, Betty of Paxinos and Robert Snyder of Elysburg; several nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins.
A funeral service will be held at Lucas Funeral Home in Shamokin, PA on Friday, July 2, 2004 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Nelson R. Alleman officiating. Burial will take place in the St. Peters Blue Church Cemetery in Paxinos. The family will receive friends at Lucas Funeral Home on Thursday, July 1st from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM and on Friday, July 2nd from 1:00 Pm to 2:00 PM. Philip Sowinski
PHILIP ANDREW SOWINSKI, age 54, of 120 Ranch Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, December 3, 2003, in Sentara Barco. A native of Erie, PA, he was the son of the late Andrew and Mrs. Theresa LaPrice Sowinski and the husband of Brigid Kapustka Sowinski of the resdience. He had retired from the United States Coast Guard with 24 years of service as an Aviation Electricians Mate First Class and served as a Flight Engineer on C130s. He later was employed with Lear Siegler Service Inc., a private contractor at the Base. Mr. Sowinski was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Theresa Sowinski of Seattle, WA; a step daughter, Christina Sheffler of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Michael Andrew Sowinski and wife Kim of Frederick, MD, and Stephan Thomas Sowinski of Elizabeth City, NC; one grandson, Joshua Robert Sowinski.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, December 6, 2003, at 1:00 PM in Holy Family Catholic Church by Deacon Alan Meister. Burial will be Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at 1:00 o’clock in Arlington National Cemetery with Military Honors. The family will receive friends at the residence. Tyler James Sparrow
Tyler James Sparrow, 53, passed away Sept. 7, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Sparrow was born in Concord, N.H., to Veryl Perkins Wells and the late James Fredrick Sparrow. Mr. Sparrow belonged to the American Legion Post No. 280, The Better Business Bureau and The Small Business Association. Mr. Sparrow loved fishing, boating, riding dirt bikes and music, most of all the harmonica and drums. He was owner and operator of Coastal Exterminating. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in Vietnam and was the recipient of the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and other commendations. Survivors include his daughter, Tiffany Reynolds of Richmond, Va.; his sons, Blake and Cameron Sparrow of Chesapeake and their mother, Martha Sparrow; his mother, Veryl Wells of Exeter, N.H.; his sister, Meryl Wells of Colrain, Mass.; and a grandchild, Riley Pittman. The family will receive friends at Twiford's Colonial Chapel Sunday at 2 p.m. with services following at 3 p.m. Burial will follow at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens.
ARTHUR WALLACE “WALLY” SPAULDING

Arthur Wallace “Wally” Spaulding, 73, of 1251 Campground Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday morning, January 9, 2003, in the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Natoma, Kansas to the late Fayett Zenith and Lillian Goldie Richardson Spaulding. He retired as a police sergeant with the Little Creek Amphibious Base after thirty years, a member of the Newland United Methodist Church, a member of the Russell Lodge #177 AF & AM and a US Navy veteran. Mr. Spaulding was a kind, gentle man and an excellent father.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Loyed Spaulding of the home, two sons, William Wallace Spaulding and Andrew Spaulding both of Elizabeth City, NC, two sisters, Anne Dean Cox and husband, Roy, of Guymon, OK. and Mary Folsom of Palm Springs, CA; one brother, Scott Noland Spaulding of Lenexa, KS; two grandchildren, Ryan Stovall and Lee Taylor Warga both of Mansfield, OH. Mr. Spaulding was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen S. Warga and two brothers Wayne Spaulding and Paul Spaulding.
Funeral services with Masonic Rites will be conducted Sunday, January 12, 2003, at 2:00pm in the Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC, by Rev. Toni Wood. Joanne M. Speer
Manteo, NC – Joanne Marie Speer passed away January 13th, 2004 at Sentara Leigh surrounded by her family. Joanne was born August 5th, 1937 in Providence, Rhode Island; the daughter of Joseph and Louise DePace. She is survived by her two children Vernon R. Bush, Jr. and Leslie A. Corpuz; her son-in-law Constant S. Corpuz and grandson Keona R. Corpuz, and her loving husband of 17 years Ronald L. Speer and step children Erik Speer and Barbara Brooks.
Joanne was a devoted wife, mother, and friend to many. In her 67 years she was able to see many parts of the world, enjoyed a variety of careers from being a stewardess for United Airlines in the 1950s to selling Mary Kay in the 1990s when she retired from the workforce to spend more time with her family. She was active in the Episcopal Church where she served on the altar guild and various other church life committees. She was also involved for years with the Outer Banks Business and Professional Women serving as president of the organization.
Services will be held January 16th, 2004 at 11:00 am at St. Andrews by the Sea 4212 South Virginia Dare Trail, Nags Head, NC 27959 and on January 20th at 2:00 pm at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 233 Mann Drive, Chesapeake, Virginia 23322. CAROLYN MASSEY SPENCE, 80, of 803 Flora St., Elizabeth City, NC died Sunday, August 8, 2004, in the Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. She was born in Apex, NC to the late Wayne Wright Massey and Lillie Eason Massey and was the wife of Dr. William M. Spence. Mrs. Spence was a member of the First United Methodist Church for over 55 years, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Museum of the Albemarle Guild and a former member of the Elizabeth City Women’s Club. She was a graduate of the Elizabeth City High School and Louisburg College.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Spence is survived by two daughters, Lauren Spence Riddick and husband, Henry, of Washington, NC and Penny Spence Raby and husband, Eddie of Elizabeth City, NC; one son, W. Mark Spence and wife, Gloria, of Manteo, NC; a brother, Wayne W. Massey, Jr. of Elizabeth City. Also, she is survived by seven grandchildren, Karen Chrisman and husband Jim, Patrick Riddick and wife, Dana, Amanda Songer and husband, Neil, Abby O’Neal and husband Ashley, William M. Spence, II, Norris Raby and Carolyn Raby; two great grandchildren, Sydney Chrisman and Owen Chrisman.

Glenn A. Spencer
Elizabeth City, NC - Glenn Ashley Spencer, age 78 of 405 W. Main St., Elizabeth City, NC died Sunday, September 22, 2002 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville. He was born in Pasquotank Co., NC; son of the late Joseph Carroll and Hazel Drinkwater Spencer and was the husband of Claudia Long Spencer of the residence. He was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendents, The Family Research Society of Northeastern North Carolina, Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the 397th Bomb Group Association. He attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and was a member of City Road United Methodist Church. He was a veteran, having served in the U. S. Army Air Corp and retired from Civil Service.
Besides his wife, Mr. Spencer is survived by a daughter, Glenda S. James of Nags Head, NC; a son, Jeffrey Long Spencer of Elizabeth City, NC; two grandsons, Scott Ashley James of Creswell, NC and Jason Harley James of Nags Head, NC; and a great granddaughter, Ashley James of Creswell, NC.
A graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, September 25, 2002 at 3:00 PM in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Charles McKenzie officiating. Military honors will be performed by the William Clarence Jackson Post # 6060 of V. F. W. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC on Tuesday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 pm.

Alvah Martin "Marty" Spencer

Alvah Martin “Marty” Spencer, Jr., 62, passed away suddenly on August 8, 2003, on his way to his farm in Camden County, NC.
Born in Pasquotank County, he was the son of the late Alvah M. Spencer, Sr. and Lillian Boyce Spencer. He was also the nephew of the late Dr. Joseph Spencer of South Mills. Mr. Spencer’s family moved to South Mills during his early school years. He later attended Elizabeth City High School, Chowan College and College of the Albemarle. However, North Carolina State University was where he pursued his main interest – agriculture.
Mr. Spencer is survived by his devoted wife, Janet Hill Spencer, with whom he has shared over 30 years. He is also survived by a sister, Alice Spencer Shearin and her husband, Edwin Shearin of Raleigh, NC, and their daughter, Amy Shearin Jeffers and her husband, Jerry Jeffers, two aunts, Genevieve Faust of Elizabeth City, NC and Nellie Magli of Franklin, TN, and numerous nieces and nephews and their children.
Mr. Spencer devoted his life to farming in Camden County. He has also been a life long member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where his family was very active in the early years of the church.
Mr. Spencer will long be remembered by all who knew him for his kindness, generosity and genuine love of people and animals – and his favorite “Redskins”.
A celebration of his life will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, South Mills, NC, on Wednesday, August 13, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. Prior to the service, friends are invited to the church fellowship hall from 12:00 noon until 1:30 p.m. to visit the family. A light lunch will be served. After the services, interment will be in Old Hollywood Cemetery, Elizabeth City, NC.

Hubert McPherson
Camden, NC - Hubert Toxey McPherson, age 90, of 604 South Highway 343, Camden, NC, died Saturday, April 19, 2003, at Winslow Memorial Nursing Home in Elizabeth City, NC. He was born in Camden County, NC, son of the late Charlie Toxey and Janie Sawyer McPherson. He was predeceased by two wives, Evelyn Wright McPherson, and Margaret Egan McPherson. He was a retired farmer, a member of Widow’s Son Masonic Lodge # 75, and a member of Camden United Methodist Church.
Mr. McPherson is survived by: two daughters, Rose Baum of Camden, NC, and Anna Marie Hare, of Elizabeth City, NC; four sons, Travis McPherson, of Nanjamoy, Md, Larry McPherson and Pete Rull, both of Camden, NC, and Jimmy Rull of Clearwater, FL, seventeen grandchildren, and sixteen great grandchildren. Besides his wives, he was predeceased by one son, Sammy Rull.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Monday, April 21, 2003 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel 405 East Church St. by the Rev. David Moehring. Masonic Rites will be accorded at the Chapel. Burial will follow in Old Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the Funeral Home immediately following the service and all other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Rull, 175 Palmer Road Camden NC.
