Vaunita Crowell Lambert
ALBEMARLE - Vaunita Frances Crowell Lambert, 71, 625 Bethany Road, died Monday (July 12, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 1, 1927, in Stanly County, she was a daughter of the late John Allen and Willie Doby Crowell. A Baptist, she was a retired laundry room supervisor with Britthaven Nursing Center.
Her husband, Mack Willard Lambert, died in 1976.
Survivors include sons James Larry Lambert, Germany, and Rickey Joe Lambert, Richfield; brother James Allen Crowell, Long Beach, Calif.; sister Lula Crowell Burris, Albemarle; and three grandchildren.
Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Thursday, Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Alvin Melton.
Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the church. At other times the family will be at the home of sister Lula C. Burris, 120 Ross Drive.
Harold Milton Matheny
KANNAPOLIS — Harold Milton Matheny, 70, died Monday (July 12, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born March 8, 1929, in Clifton Forge, Va., he was a son of Houston Guy and Isabell West Matheny, he was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church.
He retired from Kannapolis City Schools after 38 years of teaching band on all levels. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he was a member of Poston perkins VFW Post, active in the YMCA, played with the Charlotte Symphony in the 1960s and assisted with the Trainable Mentally Handicapped class at Kannapolis Middle School.
Survivors include wife Norma Barnhardt Matheny; sister Virginia Fratrick, Appomattox, Va.; brother Emmett Matheny, Clifton Forge, Va.; son Milton Ray Matheny, Kannapolis; daughter Charlotte M. Mize, Greensboro; and two grandchildren.
Services: 4 p.m. Wednesday, Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, Kannapolis, the Rev. Hoke Ritchie and Rev. John Sell officiating
Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.

Paul Watkins Robertson
MOCKSVILLE - Paul Watkins Robertson ,82, of Fork-Bixby Road, died Sunday (July 11, 1999) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.
Born May 17, 1917, in Davie County, he was a son of the late George Leroy and Delia Hendrix Robertson. An oiler for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., he was a member of Advance United Methodist Church, Advance.
Survivors include wife Marie Holder Robertson; sons Leon Robertson, Cottondale, Ala., Cecil Robertson, Advance, and Keith Robertson, Mocksville; daughter Mrs. Rick (Pamela) Jones, Sylvia; brother Robert Robertson, Advance; sisters Mabel Laird, Mocksville, and Lorine Goddard, Lenori City, Tenn.; and nine grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Advance United Methodist Church, Advance, conducted by the Rev. David Childress. Burial in the church cemetery.

Edwin L. Coppley
SOUTHMONT — Edwin L. Coppley, 54, 10362 Highway 8, died Monday (July 12, 1999) at his home.
Mr. Coppley was born Sept. 12, 1944, in Davidson County, the son of the late Fred Lee and Pallie Reeves Coppley. He was employed with Lexington Furniture Industries, Plant 1, for 36 years. He attended First Pentecostal Holiness Church. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietname War, he was a member of VFW Post 3074 and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Vada Coppley, and a son, Marshall Edwin Coppley, Welcome.
Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, First Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. Wayne Knight officiating. Burial at Macedonia United Methodist Church cemetery.
Visitation: Tonight, 7-9 o’clock, Piedmont Funeral Home, Lexington. At other times, the family will be at the home of his son at 117-2 Weaver-Wagoner Lane, Welcome.
Garland White
KANNAPOLIS—Garland White, 84, formerly of Oval Street, died at Five Oaks Nursing Home on Wednesday (July 14, 1999).
The body will remain at Lady’s Funeral Home pending completion of funeral arrangements.
John Adam Noble, Jr.
John Adam Noble, Jr. 79, Salisbury, died Tuesday (July 13, 1999) at his residence. He had been in declining health for several years.
Born Oct. 9, 1919, in Salisbury, he was the son of the late John Adam and Flora Lyons Noble. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific. He also served in the National Guard. He was employed with Duke Power’s maintenance department for 30 years before retiring in 1993.
An original member of the Rowan County Rescue Squad, he was a former volunteer with the Ellis Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a member of the Ellis Crossroads Saddle Club.
Survivors include sons John Adam Noble III and Gregory Allen Noble, both of Salisbury; sister Jonsie Noble Cowgill of Bellevue, Wash.; and two grandchildren.
Services: Graveside,11 a.m. Friday, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.
Visitation: 10-10:45 a.m. Friday, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of his son, Greg Noble, Old Mocksville Road.

Mildred Johnson Woods
Mildred Johnson, 74, 310 S. West St., died at her home Tuesday (July 13, 1999) after several months of declining health.
Born Oct. 24, 1924, in Rowan County, Mrs. Woods was the daughter of the late James A. and Maggie Rose Fisher. She was educated in the Rowan County schools and was a homemaker. She was a member of Glorious Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church.
She is survived by her husband, Lester “Shorty” Woods.

Milo Charles Brown
Milo Charles Council Brown, 74, died Tuesday (July 13, 1999) at his home after a period of declining health.
Born March 15, 1925, in Rowan County he was the son of the late Adam L. and Bessie Mae Kluttz Brown. He had retired from Fieldcrest-Cannon’s Swink Plant. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
A deacon and an elder at First United Church of Christ, he was a member of the church council, the Brotherhood and the Shives Sunday School Class. He was also a member of the Kannapolis VFW and Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post and a charter member of the Locke Volunteer Fire Department.
A son, Charles Ray Brown, died in 1948, and another son, Homer Brown, died in 1987.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Bonds Brown, whom he married Dec. 12, 1946; son Jason Brown and daughter Mrs. Paul (Glenda) Shrewsbury, both of Salisbury; and four grandchildren,
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, First United Church of Christ. Members of Locke Volunteer Fire Department will sit as a group at the church. The Rev. David Crook will conduct the service. Graveside military rites conducted by the Rowan County Veterans Council at Rowan Memorial Park.
Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Garland White
KANNAPOLIS — Garland White, 84, formerly of Oval Street, died at Five Oaks Nursing Home on Wednesday (July 14, 1999).
Born May 22, 1915, in Alexander County, he was the son of the late John Wesley and Maggie Gilbert White. He had retired from Cannon Mills.
Survivors include sister Virginia Benfield and brother Lonnie White, both of Kannapolis.
Services: Friday, 2 p.m., Lady’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Leon Hawks. Burial at Carolina Memorial Park.
Visitation: 1-2 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home.
Gary Turner
CONCORD—Gary Turner, 67, 3759 Centergrove Road, died Wednesday (July 14, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Fred T. Howell
KANNAPOLIS — Fred T. Howell, 75, 401 E. 27th St., died at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, on Wednesday (July 14, 1999).
Born Feb. 2, 1924, in Ashe County, he was the son of the late Nora Dodd and Gaither Howell. He had retired as Rowan County Veterans Services director.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member and past commander of VFW Poston-Perkins Post 8989. He was also a former state commander of the VFW and a member of the Rowan Veterans Council.
He was a Catawba College graduate and a member of New Hope Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Daniel.
Survivors include his wife, Nina Osley Howell; daughters Darlene Gant, Kannapolis, Cathy Honeycutt, Concord, and Lori Deaton and Jackie Atwell, both of China Grove; son, Scott Howell, Salisbury; sisters Margaret Ham, China Grove, and Virginia Hamm, Newton; brothers Claude Howell and Dixie Howell, both of Kannapolis; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services: 1 p.m. Friday, graveside service, National Cemetery, Salisbury. Chaplain Parker of North Carolina VFW presiding.
Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Whitley’s Funeral Home.
