Joseph Lee Whitley
Native of Norfolk, VA
JOSEPH LEE WHITLEY, age 53, of 194 Woodland Church Road, Hertford, NC, died Wednesday, October 15, 2003, in Chesapeake General Hospital. He was a native of Norfolk, VA, and had been employed with the Hess Oil Company for 26 years. He was a charter member of the Inter County Ruitan Club where he served as treasurer. Mr. Whitley was son of the late Francis E. Whitley and Frances Dunn Whitley, and was the husband of Constance “Connie” Beals Whitley of the residence.
Besides his wife he is survived by four daughters, Kimberly Erlene Jordan and Wendy Leigh Leighton both of Elizabeth City, NC, Michelle Dianne Whitley of Oldsmar, FL, and Casandra Lynn Raper of Hertford, NC; five sisters, Kathy Burke and Wanda Saulsbury both of Chesapeake, VA, Rita Bachar of AZ, Rosemary Stevenson of Belvidere, NC, Grace Sharber of Camden, NC; three half brothers, Richard Whitley and Albert Whitley both of PA, and Ellsworth Whitley of Chesapeake, VA; four grandchildren, Joseph Taylor Whitley, Steven Connor Jordan, Maitlin Lee Jordan and John A. Hughes V.
Funeral services will be Sunday, October 19, 2003 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street with Minister Ronnie Woolard officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 7:00 until 8:00 PM and immediately following the service in the funeral home lobby. At all other times the family will be at the residence. The family requests memorial donations to be made in lieu of flowers to the Inter County Ruitan Club, 3016 West Main Street Extended, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.
Esther Whitlock
Avon, NC - Esther Scarborough Whitlock, 85, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at a nursing facility in Richmond, VA. Mrs. Whitlock was born in Avon, was a homemaker and was a member of Avon Worship Center. She was the daughter of the late John Newby Scarborough and the late Annie Gray Scarborough and the widow of Winfred Rufus Whitlock.
She is survived by one son, Timothy Madison Whitlock and his wife Bonnie of Bumpass, VA; one brother, Curtis Scarborough of Avon; one nephew, Clifton Dale Scarborough and four grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Avon Worship Center on Saturday, July 3, 2004 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Timothy Cooper officiating. Burial will take place in the Gray Family Cemetery located in Avon. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday, July 2nd from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

Mary Midgett
Manns Harbor, NC - Mary Agnes Haywood Midgett, 65, died at her residence on Monday, November 10, 2003. Mrs. Midgett was born in Manns Harbor and retired as a secretary for the Dare County Public Works Department. She was a member of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church where she was the church historian and taught Sunday school for over 40 years. She was also a member of the Manns Harbor Women’s Club and one of the Board of Directors for the Community Building and had an active part in it’s construction. She was the former owner/operator of the Manns Harbor Gulf Station. Mrs. Midgett was the daughter of the late Herbert Haywood and Naomi Mann Stallings and the widow of Lloyd K. Midgett.
She is survived by two daughters, Lori Gibbs and husband Calvin, Lynette Saunders and husband Timmy both of Manns Harbor; two sons, Timothy L. Midgett and wife Deanie of Manns Harbor and Wayne Umphlett of Mashoes; two sisters, Ramona Merritt of Orlando, FL and Virginia Eason of Manns Harbor; one brother Richard Tillett of Manns Harbor and 7 grandchildren, Tyler and Tanner Hux, Brittney and Kelsey Midgett, Macy, Leann and Breann Saunders; she was preceded in death by one brother, Myron “Bud” Tillett.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at 2:00 PM at the Mount Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Bob Tilley and Rev. Steve Crews officiating. A visitation will be held Tuesday, November 11th from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Twiford’s Colony Chapel. The family will be accepting friends at the home of her son, Timmy Midgett on Highway 64/264 in Manns Harbor.

Woodrow Whitson
John Woodrow Whitson, age 86, formerly of Perkins Lane, Waterlily, NC, died Saturday, May 10, 2003, at Sentara Barco Nursing Home. Mr. Whitson, a native of Currituck County, was son of the late John Jesse Whitson and Mary Amelia Beasley Whitson and the husband of Lillian Crain Whitson of Barco, NC. He was a retired commercial fisherman and hunting guide, and a member of Coinjock Baptist Church.
Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Whitson Henley of Waterlily, NC; a son, Wilbert Woodrow Whitson of Waterlily, NC; five grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
A graveside funeral service will be Monday, May 12, 2003, at 3:00 PM at Hamption Cemetery in Waterlily with the Rev. Charles Wellons officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence of the daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Bobby Henley, 1135 Waterlily Raod, Coinjock, NC.

Goldie Burrus
FRISCO, NC - GOLDIE STOWE BURRUS, 93, of Frisco, NC died Friday, January 02, 2004 at her residence. Mrs. Burrus, born in Hatteras, NC, was a homemaker and a member of the Hatteras United Methodist Church. She was the daughter of the late Curtis William and Mattie Burrus Stowe and the widow of the late Adolphus Burrus, Jr. Mrs. Burrus was also preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Burrus Ransom.
Mrs. Burrus is survived by one daughter, Janet Hughes of Frisco, NC; three grandchildren, Damen Hughes, Suzanne Miller and husband, Richard, and Dennett Ransom and wife, Marnid; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the Hatteras United Methodist Church on Sunday, January 4, 2004 at 3:00pm, with Rev. Charles Moseley. Burial will be in the Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence in Frisco.

Samuel Burrus
MANTEO, NC - SAMUEL Z. BURRUS, 70, died Monday, October 20, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He was born in Manteo, N.C. on November 21, 1932, one of 13 children of the late Orlando and Mary Davis Burrus.
Other than short stays in California and Virginia, and service in the U.S. Coast Guard, he was a life-long resident of Dare County. He was a member of Manteo Masonic Lodge #521 AF&AM; , Dare County Shrine Club, Sudan Temple and Mount Olivet United Methodist Church. He was employed by The National Park Service, was self-employed for a number of years and most recently, retired from Dare County Building and Grounds. He and his wife were the original owners-operators of The Sandspur Cottages, Nags Head, N.C.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Atkins Burrus, two sons; Berkley W. (Butch) Burrus and Samuel E. Burrus and a daughter-in-law, Betty Burrus, all of Manteo; three grandchildren, Bryan Lee Burrus of Manteo and Krista Burrus and Mikel Burrus of Soddy-Daisy, TN, a sister, Estelle Tillett and a brother, Jack Burrus both of Manteo and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by brothers and sisters; Rayburn Burrus, Richard Burrus, Frederick Burrus, Belton Burrus, Jule Burrus, Irlene Westcott, Delnoy Burrus, Eloise Sellers, Mary Scarborough and Margaret Gates.
Funeral services will be Friday, October 24, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. in Twiford Colony Chapel by Dr. David Dalton and Rev. George Speake. Friends may join the family at Twiford Funeral Home, Thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Dare County Shrine Club, P.O. William Burroughs
CHESAPEAKE – William “Bill” Linwood Burroughs, 66, died September 7, 2003 at Chesapeake General Hospital. Mr. Burroughs was born in Norfolkto the late Linwood Garland and Iva Mae Boush Burroughs. He was a brick mason, an avid golfer and hunter and enjoyed bluegrass music. Mr. Burroughs was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Airforce.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Shirley Harris Burroughs; five daughters, Pamela Ferrell of Chesapeake, Leslie Mac Millian of VA Beach, Chris Midgett of Buxton, Diana Trueblood of Chesapeake, and Michelle Grimes of Corapeake, NC; one son, Lee Ferrell Jr. of Anderson, SC; one sister, Iva Mae Wolfe of VA Beach; seventeen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Twiford Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake on Wednesday at 7:00pm. The family will receive friends following the service and at the residence at other times. Ann Wiese
MANTEO, NC - ANGELINE “ANN” MARIE BATTAGLINO WIESE, 80, of Manteo, NC died Monday, August 4, 2003 at her residence. Mrs. Wiese, born in Bridgeville, PA was a retired Purchasing Manager in the steel industry and was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. She was the daughter of the late Massimo and Frances Czar Battaglino and the widow of the late Robert E. Wiese, Jr.
Mrs. Wiese is survived by a sister, Mary F. Mancini of Pittsburgh, PA and a number of nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Kitty Hawk, on Monday, August 11, 2003 at 11:00 am with Father Henry Haske’ S.J. officiating. Friends are invited to join the family for a buffet in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. Burial will be in Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens, Manteo. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Funeral Home, Manteo on Sunday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

JOHN LEWIS WILEY, JR
Native of Norfolk, VA
John Lewis Wiley, Jr., 64, of 5976-A Caratoke Highway, Poplar Branch, NC died Wednesday, September 22, 2004 at Sentara Hospital, Hampton VA. He was born in Norfolk, VA to Mrs. Virginia Lee Ocheltree Everett of Poplar Branch, NC and the late John Lewis Wiley. Mr. Wiley retired as a commercial boat captain, and a member of Congregational Christian Church in Norfolk, VA.
Besides his mother, he is survived by three daughters, Donna Miller of Lake Stevens, Washington, Bonnie Jones of Norfolk, VA, and Pam Adamson of Philadelphia, PA; one son, Richard Wiley of Suffolk, VA; a sister, Katherine Ross of Poplar Branch, NC; three grandchildren. Also, he is survived by a very special best friend, Theresa Johnson of Hampton, VA. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Alfred Everett.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, September 27, 2004, at 2:00pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, by Rev. Glen McCraine. Burial will be in Laurel Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Poplar Branch, NC. The family will be at the residence of his mother, Virginia Lee Everett, 5976-A Caratoke Highway, Poplar Branch, NC.

Charles Odom, Jr.
CURRITUCK, NC - Charles Merrill Odom, Jr., age 58 of 2722 Caratoke Highway Currituck, N. C., died Thursday March 25, 2004, at the Chesapeake General Hospital in Chesapeake. A funeral service will be held Saturday March 27, 2004, at 1:00 P. M. from the Chapel of Twiford Funeral Home 405 East Church Street Elizabeth City, with Rev. Charles Wellons officiating. Burial will follow in the Moyock Cemetery.
Mr. Odom was born in Norfolk, Virginia on December 31, 1945, and was the only son of Charles Merrill and Nellie Twine Odom, Sr.
He was owner and operator of Odom’s Body Shop, and attended the Rehoboth Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; Rose Harrison Odom; two sons Charles M. Odom, III and his wife Angie, and Colin M. Odom and his wife Wanda all of Currituck, and one daughter Carolyn M. Odom Barnett and her husband Michael of Maple, two sisters Betty Odom Harrison Goley of Chesapeake, Va., and Florence Odom Diggs of Currituck, nine grandchildren Charles M. Odom, IV, Colin M. Odom, Jr., Carl M. Odom, Alex M. Barnett, Caitlin M. Odom, Catherine M. Odom, Rebecca E. Bryant, Brittany B. Bryant and Chelsea A. Bryant.
The family will receive friends Friday evening March 26, from 7:00 P. M. to 8:30 P. M. at Twiford Funeral Home 405 East Church Street Elizabeth City and other time at the residence.
Eva Riggs Wilkinson
Pasquotank County Native
Eva Riggs Wilkinson, age 87, of 100 Pineview Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, passed away Saturday, September 13, 2003, at her residence. Mrs. Wilkinson, a native of Pasquotank County, NC, was the daughter of the late William Cader Riggs and Love Virginia McDonald Riggs. She had lived in Norfolk, VA for many years, and in retirement had returned to Elizabeth City.
She is survived by Charles Bough, Blanche Turner, both of Elizabeth City, her son, Gary L. Bobbitt of Virginia Beach, VA; grandchildren, Jennifer Monin and Grey Bobbitt; and great granddaughter Catherine Monin.
A graveside funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, September 16, 2003, in New Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. Roger Stanley officiating. The family will receive friends at the Twiford’s Northside Chapel, 1115 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC from 7:00 – 8:30 PM, Monday, September 15, 2003.

Edward "Ab" Wescott
MANTEO, NC - EDWARD MERL “AB” WESCOTT, 93, of Manteo, NC died Monday, August 9, 2004 in a Nags Head nursing home. Mr. Wescott, a native of Manteo, was the former owner/operator of Manteo Furniture. He was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, a past member of Manteo Lions Club, the Rotary Club, a past Master of Manteo Masonic Lodge #521, and past member of the Order of Eastern Star. Throughout his life, Ab was an accomplisher. As a youth, he long netted with his father. When WWII broke out he became a carpenter at the Manteo Shipyard, building ships for the Navy. Ab and a partner bought City Market, a local grocery, after the war ended, and he became a butcher. But, his enterprising spirit did not stop there. In 1947, Ab, with his brother, opened Manteo Furniture Company, which still thrives today. Retirement meant one thing to Ab – back to the water, his first love. Also, during this time he became an artist and sculptor, selling his crafts in local shops.
Mr. Wescott was the son of the late Lloyd M. and Lonie Midgett Wescott and the widower of the late Irlene Burrus Wescott.
Mr. Wescott is survived by three daughters, Merle W. Daniels, Barbara W. Meekins and Mary W. Rogers, all of Wanchese, NC; a son, Lloyd Melvin Wescott of Manteo, NC; two brothers, Roy Wescott and Fred Wescott, both of Manteo, NC; eighteen grandchildren, thirty-five great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church on Thursday, August 12, 2004 at 3:00 pm with Rev. Jerry Cribb officiating. Burial will follow in the Manteo Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Robert Wescott
Kitty Hawk, NC - Robert Lee Wescott, Jr., 80, died at a Suffolk hospital Tuesday, December 16, 2003. Mr. Wescott was born in Manteo, NC and was retired from the Federal Government Interstate Commerce Commission as a Safety Motor Carrier Compliance Officer. He was a member of Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, a former Scout Master, an avid Boatman and Horse Owner and attended Fork Union Military Academy. He was a Veteran having served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII as a Staff Sergeant for the 373 Bomb Squandron. Mr. Wescott was the son of the late Robert L. Wescott, Sr. and the late Mattie Sanderlin Wescott.
His survivors include several cousins, nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held this Friday, December 19, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Austin Cemetery, Kitty Hawk with Rev. Richard Stone officiating. A visitation will be held at the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church on Thursday, December 18, 2003 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

John Rudolph Werderman, III
South Mills, NC - CWO3 USN RET. John Rudolph Werderman III, age 59, of 300 Spencers Ave., South Mills, NC, died Saturday, January 25, 2003 at the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Evansville, Indiana, son of the late John Rudolph Werderman, Jr., and Irene O’Riley Werderman Ricamore of Chulavista, CA, and was the husband of Barbara Croy Werderman of the residence. Mr. Werderman was in the US Navy for over thirty years, was a CWO3, USN Ret. He was most recently a Supervisor of the Iron Shop at the US Coast Guard base in Portsmouth, VA. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was a President of Methodist Men. He was a member of the South Mills Ruritan Club, and past Governor of the Albemarle District. He taught welding at the College of the Albemarle.
Besides his wife and mother, Mr. Werderman is survived by: two daughters Barbara “Sissy” and husband Randy Marrs, of South Mills, NC, and Orenia “Binky” and husband George Grothe of Clayton, NC; three sons, Grady Werderman and wife Kim of Elizabeth City, NC, Chris Werderman of Clayton, NC and Jonathan Werderman of South Mills, NC; four sisters, Pat Hunt of IN., Frankie Mitchell of IN, Nancy Ferguson of KY, and Wilma Siedlarz of VT; two brothers, Bill Werderman of WA, and George Werderman of CA, and eleven grandchildren. He was predeceased by one brother Timmy Werderman and a step father Rick Ricamore.
A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Trinity United Methodist Church in South Mills, NC by the Rev. Jim Krepps. The family will receive friends following the service in the Church Fellowship Hall. Memorial donations may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church.

Gretchen Weikel
Grandy, NC - Gretchen Starr Outlaw Weikel, age 50, of 177 Barnard Road, Grandy, NC, died Sunday, August 8, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. She was a native of Jarvisburg, NC, and was the daughter of W. Calvin and Ilys Thompson Outlaw of Grandy, NC, and was the wife of Chester Weikel of the residence. She was a member of Poplar Branch Baptist Church and attended The Assembly of God Church in Grandy. She was a very loving person and was loved by all, and was a wonderful mother and grandmother.
Besides her husband and parents she was survived by two daughters, Tracey Lynn Wilaby and her husband James of Grandy, NC, and Jessica Starr Weikel of Charlotte, NC; one sister, Janett O. Barnard and her husband Willie of Poplar Branch, NC; two brothers, Glenn and Gerry Outlaw of Grandy, NC; two grandchildren, Megan and Grace Wilaby.
A funeral service will be Thursday, August 12, 2004 at 11:00 AM in Poplar Branch Baptist Church will Rev. Bill Thorn officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Norman Lanier Barclift
Elizabeth City, NC - Norman Lanier Barclift, Sr., age 72 of 1564 Nixonton Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Barclift, born in Pasquotank County, NC, was the son of the late Goodman Jordan Barclift and Annie Story Barclift. He was a retired farmer and served in the United States Air Force.
Mr. Barclift is survived by a loving companion, Sandra Wiborg of the residence; one daughter, Lynn Barclift White of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Norman L. Barclift, Jr., and John G. Barclift both of Elizabeth City, NC; one sister, Evelyn B. Harrell of Elizabeth City, NC; six grandchildren, Johnny Barclift, Alex Barclift, Travis Barclift, Kristin Barclift, Clay White and Rachel White. He was the widower of Susie Y. Barclift and was predeceased by two sisters, Essie Turner and Marie Young, and five brothers, Shelton Barclift, Richard Barclift, John Barclift, Alton Barclift, and Wentworth Barclift.
A funeral service will be Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at 11:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 20, 2003, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home and immediately after the service in the funeral home lobby. William Walter Wegman
Queens, NY Native
William Walter Wegman, age 87, of 103 Waters Drive, Moyock, NC, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Wegman, a native of Queens, NY, was the widow of Madeline Catherine Wegman, and the son of the late Jacob Wegman and Lena Bloodgood Wegman. He was a retired plant manager for Columbian Rope and a member of St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church.
Mr. Wegman is survived by a daughter, Margaret McKeon and son-in-law William J. Briglia, Jr., of the residence; four grandchildren, Michael Bischof, George Bischoff, Margaret-Mary Bischoff, and William Bischoff; and eleven great grandchildren.
A Mass of Resurrection will be Monday March 10, 2003 at St. Katharine Drexel at 11:00 AM with the Rev. James Buchholz officiating. A prayer service will be Saturday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and a Rosary will be Sunday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Twiford’s Northside Chapel. A graveside service will be Thursday at 10:00 AM at Holy Rood Cemetery, Westbury, NY. The family will receive friends at the residence. Judy Barcroft
Kill Devil Hills, NC - Judy Cason Barcroft, 46, of 312 Ocean Acres Drive, Kill Devil Hills, NC, died Monday, March 29, 2004 in Nags Head, NC. She was born in Virginia Beach, VA to Jeanette Miller Cason of Knotts Island, NC and the late William Earl Cason and was the wife of Walter Perkins Barcroft, Jr. of the home.
Besides her husband and mother, Mrs. Barcroft is survived by a daughter, Bobbie Jean Dundlow of Knotts Island, NC; a son, Richard Allen Newnam, Jr. of the home; one sister, Sharon Valencia of Knotts Island, NC; four brothers, Bobby Earl Cason of Yreka, CA, Jerrry L. Cason, Alvin E. Cason, and Arnold H. Cason, Jr. all of Knotts Island, NC; and three grandsons, Edward J. McCurdy, Jr., Quentin Dundlow, and Trey Dundlow. She was preceded in death by a brother, David L. Cason.
A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, April 1, 2004 at 3:00 PM at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake, VA. The family will receive friends and relatives prior to the service at the funeral home from 1:00 to 3:00 PM on Thursday.
