Howard Lee Daniels
Howard Lee Daniels, 84, of Clemmons died November 10 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born July 6, 1918, in Davidson County to Joe Green and Addie Byerly Daniels. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Clemmons and served in the U.S. Army during World War II from Sept. 9, 1941, to June 30, 1945, as a demolition specialist in the invasions of Africa and Italy under Patton with the Combat Engineers Unit, receiving seven bronze service stars, one bronze arrowhead American defense service metal and the good conduct metal. His parents and a brother, Joseph Lester Daniels, preceded him in death.
Surviving are a brother, Marvin G. Daniels, and a sister, Frances Hege and husband John R., all of Clemmons; a stepson, Chuck Darr and wife Shirley of Lexington; two step grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; four nieces and a nephew.
Funeral services were held at Centenary United Methodist Church with Rev. Randy Lucas officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Eula Sale Correll
Eula Sale Correll, 89, died November 10 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born May 26, 1913, to the late L. Mansfield and Eulora Mae Jarvis in Wilkes County. She was a member of Clemmons First Baptist Church and of Clemmons Chapter No. 373 Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husbands, A. Dick Sale and Lewis E. Correll. Her sons, Donald J. Sale and Linville Max Sale, also preceded her in death.
Surviving are a son, Dick Sale Jr. and wife Roberta of Columbia, S.C.; a daughter-in-law, “Putter” Sale Caudle and husband, Don; a stepdaughter, Sallie Correll Heald of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Kitty Sale Konkle and husband Bruce, Susan Sale Smick and Bob Sale, all of Columbia, S.C., Julia Sale Forrester and husband Rick of Chevy Chase, Md., Sharon Sale Terpak and husband Steveof Huntersville and Pam Sale Cavenaugh and husband Ken of Winston-Salem; two stepgrandchildren, Laura H. Brown of Ontario, Canada and Lois Heald of Winston-Salem; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Pauline Jarvis Clark of Clemmons and Vena Jarvis Johns of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel with Dr. Robert Phillips officiating, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Cemetery.
Betty Carter Bolton
Betty Carter Bolton, 83, of Elkin died November 8 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born in Hayne County on May 16, 1919, to Levi and Carrie Robinson Carter. She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Bolton.
Surviving are two daughters, Cindy Hughes and husband Loyd of Clemmons and Janet Alderman and husband Leroy of Sanford, Fla.; a brother, Don Robinson of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Cora Mae Williams of Asheville; two grandchildren, Michael Tofano and Lisa Hathaway; and five great-grandchildren, Leah Tofano, Benjamin Tofano, Jacob Hathaway and Deborah and Joshua Howick.
Funeral services were held at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Don Stephens and Rev. Stewart Roten officiating, and burial followed in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
Edith Lucille Poindexter
Edith Lucille Poindexter Walker, 82, of Homestead Hills died November 5 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born May 18, 1920, in Forsyth County to William S. and Maggie Stilley Poindexter. She was a graduate of Clemmons High School, a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 36 years service and a member of Pine Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kemper “Kemp” Walker; an infant daughter, Linda Lucille Walker; a sister, Shirley Watkins; and a brother, William (Bill) Poindexter.
Surviving are a brother, Bob Poindexter and wife Marie of Clemmons; five sisters, Violet Rothrock and husband Carl of Lewisville, Betty Miller and husband L.F. of Lewisville, Mamie Sales of Harrisburg, Ethel Brewer (June) of Winston-Salem, and Evelyn Boles of Winston-Salem; nine nieces; and 16 nephews.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Elder John Draper, Don Brewer and Bill Teague will officiating. Burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Ronald Lee Decker
Ronald Lee Decker, 59, of Clemmons died July 27 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born July 13, 1943, in Norfolk, Va., to Wilbur and Shirley Edman Decker. He served four years in the U.S. Navy. He was the former president of Edman Electric Co., served several years as president of Forsyth Electrical Contractors, was a board member of CECA and was appointed by former Gov. Jim Hunt to the building code board. He also served as president of the Winston-Salem Soapbox Derby Association and on the board of South Little League. He was a member of the Winston-Salem Corvette Club, the American Water Ski Association, the American Water Ski Education Foundation, Team Mastercraft and last but not least, the Single Action Shooting Society. He also served as a scoutmaster at New Friendship Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Wilbur; and two brothers, Terry C. Decker and Timothy L. Decker.
Surviving are his wife, Dianne, of the home; two sons, Jeffrey Lee Decker and wife Tracey and Michael Ronald Decker and wife Brenda; his mother, Shirley E. Decker; three grandchildren, Kirk, Tyler and Ariel; a brother, Richard Emil Decker and wife Misuk; two sisters-in-law, Wilma Decker and Cathy Decker Pinnix; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park with minister Ollis Baggett officiating.
Dennis John Wheeler
Dennis John Wheeler, 51, of Pfafftown died July 22 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born October 2, 1950, in Ashtabula, Ohio, the son of Gladys Simpson and the late Kenneth T. Wheeler. He had battled against cancer for the past 18 years. He had a love for sailing and woodworking.
Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Bonnie Mosier Wheeler; his mother, Gladys Simpson of Winston-Salem; a sister, Pat Hogge and husband Robert of Winston-Salem; a brother, James Wheeler and wife Betty of Kingsville, Ohio; his mother-in-law, Betty Mosier of Ashtabula, Ohio; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Sharon and Roger Osburn of Kingsville, Ohio, and Carol and Albert Dunick of Ashtabula; three nieces; and three nephews.
A memorial service was held at First Christian Church in King.
Ann Long Hendrix
Ann Long Hendrix, 78, of Winston-Salem died July 29 after a brief illness. Born January 20, 1924, in Forsyth County to Dr. Van McKee Long and Hanna McLaughlin Long. She was married to Nelson Lee Hendrix in Izmir, Turkey, in 1949. While living in Izmir for five years, she helped establish an English-speaking school for children of NATO military personnel and civilian employees. She and her husband also organized a Christian church to serve the English-speaking population of Izmir. During World War II, she served as a cryptologist in Washington, D.C., then returned to Winston-Salem to teach English and drama at R.J. Reynolds High School. She was the faculty sponsor of the cheerleading squad and the drama club, and had the opportunity to teach many of Winston's Greek immigrants English as a second language. Her interests and activities included The Little Theatre of Winston-Salem, the Louise Haywood Service league, various PTA groups, gardening, reading and travel. She was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Winston-Salem and a founding member of Shallowford Presbyterian Church in Lewisville. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Van McKee Long, Jr.
Surviving are her husband, Nelson Lee Hendrix, of Salemtowne, the Moravian Retirement Community; three daughters, Kyle Dalton and husband David of Southport, Ellen Koch and husband Reinhard of Apex and Lee Simmons and husband Bob of Iron Station; a son, Nelson Hendrix and wife Michele of High Point; and seven grandchildren, Erika and Maret Koch; Rush, Grier and Ann Simmons; Kess and Miles Hendrix.
A memorial service was held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel.
Marion Rivers Smith Wright
Marion Rivers Smith Wright, 78, of Lewisville died July 27 at her home. She was born in Rocky Mount on August 9, 1923, to the late David Morton Smith and Cammie Forrest Smith of Rocky Mount. She was retired from Sears and was a member of Dortches Baptist Church in Rocky Mount. She was the wife of Lester J. Wright of Rocky Mount, who preceded her in death in 1993. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Earl Smith of Asheville; and her sister, Lillian Gardner of Salisbury.
Surviving are her daughter, Cammie "Bunnie" Wright of Lewisville; five sons, Tony Wright and wife Mary Ellen of Spartanburg, S.C., Barry Wright of Charlotte, Chris Wright of Rocky Mount, Gary Wright and wife Sharlene of Pineville, and Jack Wright and wife Sherrie of Battleboro; a brother, Donald Smith of Spartanburg, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Kelley and Jamie Wright, both of Rocky Mount, Brandon and Jason Wright, both of Pineville, and Brent, Brian and Seth Wright of Battleboro; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Chet Rains officiating. Burial followed at Red Oak Cemetery.
Elizabeth Faustina Brown Lewis
Elizabeth Faustina Brown Lewis, 77, of Winston-Salem wife of James R. "Bobby" Lewis, died July 24 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born April 25, 1925, in Charleston, W.Va., daughter of the late Eugene W. and Edna Carr Brown. She worked for Forsyth Bank and then Southern National Bank prior to her retirement.
Surviving are her husband, James R. “Bobby”Lewis, of the home; a daughter, Debra Workman Smith and son-in-law, Greg Smith of Lewisville; a son, Jesse Joe Workman II of Wilmington; a stepdaughter, Kimberly Dawn Hutcherson and husband Guy Hutcherson of Wallburg; and two stepgrandchildren, Zachary Tyler Hutcherson and Mary Catherine Hutcherson.
A memorial service was held at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel with Rev. Wanda Ogden officiating.
June Thomasson Disher
June Thomasson Disher, 77, of Winston-Salem, died at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on July 28. She was born on June 4, 1925, to the late Roger William and Lillian Heath Thomasson. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, was past president of several Winston-Salem school PTA organizations, and active in the local Girl Scouts Council. Before her retirement, she was employed by Daly Seven Inc. and was the former co-owner of June's Hallmark Store. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Eugene Disher; and three sisters, Kathleen Norris Thomasson, Margaret Thomasson Meckl, and Rebecca Thomasson Daniels.
Surviving are her mother, Katie "Tommy" Thomasson; daughters, Vicki Disher Radford and husband Jon of Winston- Salem, Debbie Tate Pigman and husband Don of Friday Harbor, Wash., and Patsy Disher Traylor and husband Dan of Lewisville; three grandchildren, Michael Disher Radford of Columbia, S.C., Sarah Radford Marcey and husband, Rob of St. Augustine, Fla., and Deborah Ann Traylor of Greensboro; two great-grandchildren, Jaden Michael Marcey and Camryn Elizabeth Marcey of St. Augustine, Fla.; a sister, Mary Ruth Cockerham of Elkin; and several nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service and a memorial service were held at Centenary United Methodist Church with Rev. Jack Yarbrough and Rev. Roland Barnhardt officiating.
Lizzie Crotts Hearn
Lizzie Crotts Hearn, 81, of Lexington died July 29 at her home after an extended illness. She was born April 15, 1921, to Jessie Lee Crotts and Ida Cornelia Burkhart Crotts. She was owner and operator of Liz's Lingerie from 1981 to 2000. She was employed with J.F. Ward Co. from 1954 to 1981, serving as manager the last 10 years. She was a member of Second Reformed United Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph D. Hearn Sr., on July 24, 1997, and by brothers Pete and Cloys Crotts and sister Viola Crotts.
Surviving are sons Joseph D. Hearn Jr. and wife Jackie of Lexington and William "Bill" Hearn and wife Joye of Clemmons; daughter Sue Parrish and husband Watts of Lexington; grandchildren Wesley Hearn Skinner and husband, Joseph, Mark Hearn and wife Kelle, and Bryan Parrish, all of Lexington, Daniel B. William Donald Putney
William Donald Putney, 91, of Winston-Salem died July 23 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born June 4, 1911, in Buffalo, N.Y., to William and Helen Logan Putney. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons. He was preceded in death by a son, Bill Putney.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Mary Wright Putney of the home; three daughters, Helene Wood and husband Richard of Virginia Beach, Va., Kaye Frandsen and husband James of Kingsport, Tenn., and Joan Hooper and husband Bill of Winston-Salem; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Putney of Rochester, N.Y.
A memorial service was held at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Adrian officiating.
Avadell Fannie Davis Hodges
Avadell Fannie Davis Hodges, 71, of Rural Hall died July 24 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born January 29, 1931, in Surry County to the late Dexter C. and Artie Lee Ward Davis. She retired from Wachovia Bank with 43 years of service. In addition to her parents and three brothers, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kellis Monroe Hodges.
Surviving are a daughter, Karen Hodges of Rural Hall; a son, Mike Hodges of Pfafftown; a granddaughter, Tammy Hodges of Clemmons; a sister, Janet Davis of Mount Airy; and a brother, Donald Davis of Low Gap.
A graveside service was held at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall.
Mary Anne Gillespie Riddle
Mary Anne Gillespie Riddle, 65, of Lewisville died July 30 following a brief illness. She was born December 26, 1936, in Leicester, the daughter of Howard J. Gillespie and the late Margie Wells Gillespie. She was a valued employee of Wachovia Corporation in Winston-Salem.
Surviving are her husband, Howard R. Riddle; her children, Debbie Montgomery and husband Jerry of Mooresville, Lisa Beeson and husband Randy of Yadkinville, Doug Riddle of Winston-Salem, Nicole Wolfe and husband Tom of Statesville and a "special daughter," Silvia Souza and husband Marco of Houston, Texas; her sister, Joyce Douglas and husband Jim of Statesville; her brother, Ed Gillespie and wife Helen of Leicester; her father of Leicester; her grandchildren, Stephen Montgomery and wife Michelle, Jessica Montgomery, Jerrett Montgomery, Brandy Beeson, Jordan Lockard, Peyton Wolfe, Gidget Handy and her great-grandchildren, Jacob Montgomery and Kyle Altizer.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel. A graveside service was held in Leicester at Bell United Methodist Church.
Walter Lindsay Sowers
Walter Lindsay "Buddy" Sowers, 80, of Lewisville died July 30. He was born October 30, 1921, in Forsyth County to the late T. Brackett and Lula Clyde Edwards Sowers. He served his Lord for 56 years. During these years he was a Sunday school teacher, deacon, served on committees and was always available for seasonal projects. He was a faithful member of Center Grove Baptist Church. He enjoyed sports, especially baseball, and he was active for many years not only as a spectator but also as a participant. At the age of 69 he started playing golf and enjoyed many outings with family and friends. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. He was a member of the Lewisville Volunteer Fire Department and was the fire chief for four years before retiring in 1978. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. in 1983. He was a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program for 17 years and active in the community Joy Club after his retirement. He was preceded in death by his sister, Juanita Wall.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Ruth Thompson Sowers of the home; three sons, Larry Sowers and wife Carol of Lewisville, Mike Sowers and wife Susan of Dacula, Ga., and Alan Sowers and wife Janet of Lewisville; six grandchildren, Walt Sowers and wife Jennifer of Madison, Ala., David Sowers and wife Kay of Lewisville, Maria Womble and husband David of Oviedo, Fla., Julie Sowers of Auburn, Ala., Emily Dye and husband Ernie of Dacula, Ga., and Kristi Sowers of Winston-Salem; 10 great-grandchildren, Kimberly, Mitchell, Alli, Lauren, Bo, Holli, Grace, Jake, Cheyenne and Caleb; three sisters, Lucille Young of Winston-Salem, Betty Jo Palmer and husband Don of Walkertown and Shirley Wagoner and husband Orville of Winston-Salem; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Center Grove Baptist Church with Dr. Billy Dickerson officiating. A military graveside service followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Fred Michael Ayers
Fred Michael Ayers, 52, of Clemmons died July 30 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born July 20, 1950, to the late Arthur Lee and Evelyn Scott Ayers, the third of six children. He was the owner and president of United Textile Sales for 30 years.
Surviving are his wife of 12 years, Zondra Ayers of Clemmons; a daughter, Stacy Ayers of Winston-Salem; his mother, Evelyn S. Ayers of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Art Ayers of Asheboro and Jimmy Ayers of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Debbie Orrell of Pfafftown, Jane Roberts of Destin, Fla. and Chris Helsabeck of Pfafftown; as well as many nephews and nieces and very close personal friends.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Chaplain Fred Moretz officiating, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Helen Veasey Smith
Helen Veasey Smith, 83, formerly of Winston-Salem, died July 24 at The Oaks at Forsyth. She was born November 9, 1918, in Granville County to Stephen Logan and Cordelia Anne Latta Veasey. As a member of Konnoak Hills Moravian Church she was the first female member of the board of trustees; a delegate to the Moravian Synod of the Southern Province; a teacher of the Emma Spaugh class for more than years; and president of the women's fellowship. She retired from Brake Center Inc., where she was employed as secretary/treasurer. She was also very active in the Forsyth County Home Extension Club. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herbert Bryson Smith; two sisters, Juanita Veasey Montgomery and Kathleen Logan Veasey; and a brother, Albert Mitchell Veasey.
Surviving are a son, Philip Logan Smith and wife Virginia of Lewisville; a daughter, Sandra Kaye Hamlin and husband Daniel of Greenbelt, Md.; six grandchildren, Stephen Logan Smith and wife Melissa of Colorado Springs, Colo., Geoffrey Randolph Smith and wife Chandy of Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., Peyton Sumner Smith of Lewisville, Megan Campbell Smith of Lexington, Ky., Joseph Raymond Hamlin and wife Pam of Greenbelt, Md., and Seth Lucas Hamlin of San Francisco, Calif.; five great-grandchildren, Kathleen Cornell Smith of Colorado Springs, Colo., Lily Veda Smith of Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., Cowen Glynn Shears of Lexington, Ky., and Nathalie Simone Hamlin and Jared Michael Hamlin, both of Greenbelt, Md.; two brothers, Joseph Ray Veasey and wife Shirley of Cary and Stephen Leroy Veasey and wife Geraldine of Fuquay-Varina; and a sister, Nell Cordelia Slaughter of Fuquay-Varina.
Funeral services were held at Konnoak Hills Moravian Church with Rev. John Wrights officiating, and burial followed at God's Acre in Old Salem.
Wayne O. Shelton
Wayne O. Shelton, 56, of Pfafftown, died August 2 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born April 10, 1946, in Forsyth County to Albert Odell and Mable Smith Shelton. He was retired from Sears as a mechanic and was involved with drag racing at Farmington Dragway, first as a driver, and later as an official.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Gibson Shelton; his daughter, Tammy Shelton and her fiancé, Jamail Littlejohn; and a grandson, Jalen Littlejohn, all of the home.
A memorial service was held at the home.
Nannie Belle Keaton Canter
Nannie Belle Keaton Canter, 93, of Wintson-Salem died July 30 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born April 28, 1909, in Davie County to the late Frank and Minnie King Keaton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Lee Canter.
Surviving are a son, Richard Lee Canter and wife Karen of Cocoa, Fla.; three grandchildren, Rick Canter of Kernersville, Mark Canter and wife Lisa of Clemmons and Lisa Pendry and husband Ronnie of Kernersville; and four great-grandchildren, Heather and Amber Canter of Clemmons and Katie and Emily Pendry of Kernersville.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel with Rev. Denny Sinclair officiating, and burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
