ROSEBORO -- Wilbert C. Melvin, 61, of 1995 Old Mintz Road died Tuesday in Sampson Regional Medical Center in Clinton.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Sam Spring AME Zion Church by the Rev. Ronald Thomas. Burial will be in Roseboro Cemetery.
Mr. Melvin is survived by three daughters, Penny Stewart of New York, Tonya Jackson of Detroit and Marie Joseph of Clinton; a son, Eris Joseph of Detroit; his stepmother, Dixie Melvin of Roseboro; three sisters, Elizabeth Dean and Teresa Moore, both of Roseboro, and Remelle Cromartie of Fayetteville; four brothers, R.T. Melvin, the Rev. Jimmy Melvin, Wordrick Melvin and Randy Melvin, all of Roseboro; and eight grandchildren.
The public will be received today from 1 to 6 p.m. at Butler & Son Funeral Home.
Hallie K. Price Sr. (dated Friday, Dec. 26, 1997)
ERWIN -- Hallie Kenneth Price Sr., 77, of Erwin died Saturday in his home.
Mr. Price was a partner at Price Funeral Home and a member of Erwin United Methodist Church. He served as town commissioner, past president of Erwin Area Chamber of Commerce and was past master of Neill S. Stewart Lodge 556. Mr. Price was a member of Scottish Rite in Wilmington and the Sudan Temple in New Bern, and was past patron of Erwin Chapter 230 Order of the Easter Star.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Price Funeral Home chapel by the Revs. Ken Hall and John Wenberg. Burial will be in Erwin Memorial Park.
Mr. Price is survived by his wife, Hilda B. Price; a son, H. Kenneth Price Jr. of Erwin; and four brothers, James G. Price of Moncks Corner, S.C., Wilbur E. Price of Charlotte, Harold B. Price of Raleigh and Robert M. Price of Cary.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home and at other times at the home.

Charles N. Kerns (dated Friday, Dec. 26, 1997)
Retired Army Command Sgt. Maj. Charles N. Kerns, 63, of Fayetteville died Sunday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Highland Funeral Service & Crematory chapel by the Rev. Jim Ponder. Burial with full military honors will be in Cumberland Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Kerns is survived by his wife, Shirley G. Kerns; a son, Charles N. Kerns Jr. of Fayetteville; a daughter, Crystal Shew of Fayetteville; two brothers, Hetzel A. Kerns of Vine Grove, Ky., and Golden Kerns of Whitacre, Va.; four sisters, Elizabeth Stanley of Winchester, Va., Ethel Barnett of Bunker Hill, W.Va., Betty Jackson of Ridgeway, W.Va., and Mary Ann Gerber of Berryville, Va.; and one grandson.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

RALEIGH -- Ms. Maggie Ruth Carter, 73, of 3609 Bond St., formerly of Fayetteville, died Wednesday in Wake Medical Center.

Mrs. Juanita D. Phillips (dated Friday, Dec. 26, 1997)
Mrs. Juanita Davidson Phillips, 79, of Fayetteville died Tuesday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
Mrs. Phillips was a member of LaFayette Baptist Church and a past president of the Women’s Missionary Union and a former Sunday school teacher. She was a member of Keenagers Senior Adult Group and was a volunteer at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for 10 years.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in LaFayette Baptist Church by the Rev. Brian Lee. Burial will be in Lafayette Memorial Park.
Mrs. Phillips is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Burkes of Clinton; three sons, Larry Phillips and Mike Phillips, both of Fayetteville, and Steve Phillips of Freehold, N.J.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Lucille H. Lewis (dated Friday, Dec. 26, 1997)
MARION -- Mrs. Lucille Helms Lewis, 65, of Marion died Wednesday in McDowell Hospital.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Kirksey Funeral Home by the Rev. Bill Long. Burial will be in McDowell Memorial Park.
Among Mrs. Lewis’ survivors are two sons, John T. Stewart and Barry Stewart, both of Raeford; a stepson, Mack Lewis of Pinehurst; and two stepdaughters, Patty Lunsford of Raeford and Debi Murray of Fayetteville.
James L. Morris (dated Friday, Dec. 26, 1997)
James L. Morris, 77, of 2611 S. Edgewater Drive, Fayetteville, died Wednesday in his home.
Mr. Morris served as a captain in the Army during World War II. He was a retired investment banker and was a partner in Powell, Kistler and Co. He served as vice chairman on the board of directors for Hardees Food Systems, and on the board of directors for IMASCO, USA, Peoples Natural Gas of South Carolina and the Automatic Service Company. Mr. Morris was past president of the Fayetteville Area Industrial Commission and was on the board of directors for Highland Country Club. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. John’s Episcopal Church by the Rev. David Chamberlain. Arrangements are being handled by Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.
Mr. Morris is survived by his wife, Lucy G. Morris of the home; a daughter, Winifred M. Boisky of Wilmington; three sisters, Betty M. Leake, Peggy M. Hyde and Virginia M. Haney, all of Charlottesville, Va.; two brothers, Joe B. Morris of Richmond, Va., and Ray A. Morris of Charlottesville; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 7 at the home.

PARKTON -- David Doyle DeVault, 30, of 4635 Desert Ridge Road died Wednesday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.
He was a member of Fayetteville Community Church and the AMA Flying Club.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Rogers & Breece Funeral Home chapel in Fayetteville by the Rev. Ken Pritchard. Burial will be in Lafayette Memorial Park in Fayetteville.
Mr. DeVault is survived by his wife, Lisa A. DeVault of the home; a daughter, Kimberly A. DeVault of the home; a son, Dylan C. DeVault of the home; his parents, Bill and Betty DeVault of Fayetteville; and three brothers, James E. DeVault, Anthony R. DeVault and Terry L. DeVault, all of Fayetteville.

BALTIMORE -- Ms. Michelle Lynn Strom, 20, of Baltimore died Friday.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Locklear & Son Funeral Home chapel in Pembroke, N.C., by the Rev. Redell Hammonds. Burial will be in Beulah Baptist Church cemetery.
Among Ms. Strom’s survivors is her stepfather, Howard Strickland, formerly of Robeson County, N.C.
Bobby L. McLaughlin (dated Friday, Dec. 26, 1997)
SHANNON -- Bobby Lewis McLaughlin, 38, of Shannon died Tuesday.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday in First Free Will Baptist Church in Red Springs by Elder Rudolph Powell. Burial will be in Community Rest Cemetery in Red Springs.
Mr. McLaughlin is survived by his mother, Addie “Lou” McLaughlin of the home; a sister, Wilhelmenia Brown of Miami; and a brother, Nelson McLaughlin of Shannon.
