DUNN -- Mrs. Lucy Mae Johnson, 80, of 108 Beale St., died Saturday in Betsy Johnson Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Carrie F. Barker (dated Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997)
DAMASCUS, Md. -- Mrs. Carrie Lee Fields Barker, 71, of Damascus, formerly of Carthage, N.C., died Saturday.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday in Fry-Prickett Funeral Home in Carthage by the Rev. Kenneth Holt. Burial will be in Buffalo Cemetery in Sanford, N.C.
Mrs. Barker is survived by four daughters, Nancy Mindte of Derwood, Elizabeth Barker of Malden, Mo., and Carolyn Barker and Cynthia Barker, both of Damascus; a son, W. Larry Barker of Derwood; two sisters, Bonnie F. Scott of Carthage, and Frances F. Strutts of Sanford; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Julia F. DeBois (dated Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997)
HOPE MILLS -- Mrs. Julia Frances DeBois, 37, of Hope Mills died Thursday.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Reeves Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. George Jones. Burial will be in Adcox Cemetery.
Mrs. DeBois is survived by her mother and stepfather, Gladys and John Hilburn of Hope Mills; two sisters, Sharon Yerry and Diane Thompkins, both of Hope Mills; two brothers, J.L. DeBois of Hope Mills and James DeBois of Parkton; three daughters, Candice Foster and Kelly Foster, both of Fayetteville, and Megan Wingfield of Hope Mills.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.
John L. Bethune (dated Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997)
CARY -- John Lauchlin Bethune, 70, of 739 Crabtree Crossing Parkway, formerly of Clinton, died Saturday in his home.
He retired from State Distributing Co. in Raleigh and was and Army Air Corps veteran.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church in Clinton by the Rev. William Hawkins. Burial will be in Clinton City Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home.
Mr. Bethune is survived by his wife, Sarah H. Bethune of the home; a son, John J. Bethune of Martin, Tenn.; two daughters, Jan B. Tart of Clinton and Elizabeth B. Catlette of Garner; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends today at the home and at other times at the home of Jan and Whit Tart, 101 Owl Roost, Clinton.

GREENSBORO -- Retired Army Sergeant 1st Class Ulysses Lawson, 68, of 521 Tipperary Drive, formerly of Spring Lake, died Friday in Womack Army Medical Center on Fort Bragg.

Mrs. Harriette L. Bell (dated Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997)
Mrs. Harriette Lee Bell, 85, of Fayetteville died Saturday in Presbyterian Home of High Point.

James C. Smith (dated Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997)
The Rev. James C. Smith, 68, of 617 York Road, Fayetteville, died Tuesday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
He was co-founder and pastor of Power House of Love and Faith Church in Fayetteville and was retired from the board of education in Brooklyn, N.Y.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Power House of Love and Faith Church by Bishop Charles Johnson and Pastor Seles Smith. Entombment will be in Cumberland Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Pastor Seles Smith; seven sons, Larry Smith, Charles Smith, Jerome Smith, Michael Smith, Daryl Smith, Christopher Smith and John Smith, all of Fayetteville; five daughters, Gloria Trotter of Fayetteville, Linda Williams of Brooklyn, and Carolyn Hoffler, Cheryl Skelton and Lisa Williams, all of Fayetteville; four brothers, James Small, Cleveland Small and Alton Small, all of Fayetteville, and George Smith of Brooklyn; six sisters, Easterleen Small, Margaret Small, Lou A. Small and Erma Avery, all of Fayetteville, Mary L. Anderson of Brooklyn and Ruby L. Small of Los Angeles; 24 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The public will be received today from 3 to 6 p.m. at H.M. Colvin Funeral Home.

WHITEVILLE -- Ms. Donna Sue Ward Strait, 29, of Whiteville, died Saturday in her home.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn by the Rev. Richard C. Baldwin Sr. Burial will be in Thompson Cemetery.
Ms. Strait is survived by her parents, Clayton and Nancy H. Ward of Whiteville; a brother, Clayton “Randy” Ward of Whiteville; and a sister, Linda Evans of Hallsboro.

ST. PAULS -- Mrs. Rosa Currie Fennell, 51, of 150 Community Road died Thursday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Bobby McKoy. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by McKoy & Sons Mortuary.
Mrs. Fennell is survived by two daughters, Manda Pone of St. Pauls and Tanaja McMillan of Georgia.; a son, John Fennell Jr. of St. Pauls; her mother, Vera Currie of St. Pauls; seven sisters, Georgia M. Currie of Brooklyn, N.Y., Shirley Quick of Canton, Nettie Paige and Sarah McMillan, both of St. Pauls, Lee C. Andrews of Council, Ida McEachern of Red Springs, and Sheila C. Clark of Lumberton; four brothers, Willie A. Currie of Wilson, George A. Currie of Atlanta, and David Currie and Alvin Currie, both of St. Pauls; and three grandchildren.

BLADENBORO -- Joe McCormick, 86, of Bladenboro died Saturday in Elder Lodge Nursing Home in Fayetteville.

Mrs. Emily O. Collins (dated Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997)
MULLINS, S.C. -- Mrs. Emily O’Neal Collins, 88, of Mullins died Saturday in Carrolton of Lumberton nursing home in Lumberton, N.C.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Cox-Collins Funeral Home chapel by the Revs. Kenneth Sandifer and Lewis McCormick. Burial was in Cedardale Cemetery.
Mrs. Collins is survived by four sons, Rupert Collins, Tom Collins and Danny Collins, all of Lumberton, and David Collins of Mullins; two daughters, Dixie C. Rentz of Columbia and Alice Collins of Red Springs, N.C.; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Ivey L. Johnson Sr. (dated Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997)
WALLACE -- Ivey Lee Johnson Sr., 87, of 2310 Wallace Highway died Saturday in Sampson Regional Medical Center in Clinton.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Wells Chapel Baptist Church by the Revs. Ottis King, Michael Shook and Gene Sandlin. Burial was in Rockfish Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Padgett Funeral Home.
Among Mr. Johnson’s survivors is a son, Ronnie Johnson of Sanford.
Everette E. Bryan (dated Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997)
GOLDSBORO -- The Rev. Everette E. Bryan, 68, of 409 Shadowy Lane, formerly of Bladen County, died Saturday.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Pine Forest United Methodist Church by the Rev. Terry Huffines. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Coley Funeral Home of Kenly.
Mr. Bryan is survived by his wife, Christine H. Bryan; two daughters, Glenda B. Bowen of Kinston and Marilyn B. Draughon of Virginia Beach, Va.; four sisters, Mary West of Broadway, Mattie Oliver of Garland, Ruth Simpson of Roseboro and Marjorie Melvin of Chadbourn; two brothers, Julian C. Bryan of Bladenboro and David W. Bryan of Whiteville; and one granddaughter.
George ‘Tom’ Poythress (dated Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997)
LAURINBURG -- George Thomas “Tom” Poythress, 81, of 2857 Hooper Drive died Sunday in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
He was a retired truck driver for Hasty Plywood in Maxton and attended Calvary Baptist Church.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium chapel by the Revs. Russell Baker and Steve Adams. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.
Mr. Poythress is survived by his wife, Minnie L. Poythress of the home; two sons, John T. Poythress of Stanley and Billy L. Poythress of Illinois; three sisters, Roberta Gibson of Ellerbe, Geneva Fletcher of Charlotte and Virginia Maner of Kannapolis; two brothers, Woodrow Poythress of Matthews and Jack Poythress of Hopkins, Minn.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

William J. Fitch (dated Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997)
RALEIGH -- William J. Fitch, 93, of Raleigh died Saturday.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Montlawn Memorial Park by the Rev. Tim O’Connor. Arrangements are being handled by Mitchell Funeral Home.
