Mary Gordon Abahazi
Mary Gordon Abahazi, 92, of Pfafftown died August 14 at Oak Summit Nursing Center. She was born October 28, 1913, in Erie, Pa., to John Joseph and Susan Tuskovich Gordon. She was a charter member of the Lutheran Church of the Epiphany. She was the widow of Arthur John Abahazi, who died in 1999; and was also preceded in death by a son, Arthur Andrew Abahazi, who died in 1988.
Surviving are a daughter, Marylin Moras of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Sabrina Abahazi, Maria Abahazi and Robert Morris; a brother, John Gordon of Kernersville; a brother-in-law, Leo Sienkiewicz of Pfafftown; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at the Lutheran Church of the Epiphany with Pastors Stephen P. Gerhard and Laura M. Wind officiating.
Clyde Taft Overby
Clyde Taft Overby, 77, of Laurinburg died August 10. He was born June 14, 1929, in Yadkin County. He married Barbara Jean Crater on January 13, 1951, before he left the United States for two years of military service in Korea. After he returned to the U.S., he completed his career with Southern Bell Telephone Co., where he worked for 30 years before retiring at 55. His most passionate interest, apart from his family, was golf. In 2004, he finally became a hole-in-one dad. His life inspired the creation of the C.T. Overby Youth Golf Fund to provide grants that assist young people in achieving their own golfing dreams. He was as longtime member of Center Grove Baptist Church in Clemmons. He was preceded in death by his mother, Merlie C. Lawson of Clemmons.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Barbara Jean Crater Overby; two daughters, Pamela Overby of Charlotte and Lisa Overby Robertson and husband Steve of Jackson, Wyo.; and a son, Randall Overby and wife Iris, and their children, Scott and Morgan Cheyenne, all of Wagram; and two sisters, Betty Chapman and husband Elton of Nashville, Tenn., and Doris Barney and husband Gary of Advance.
A memorial service was held at Center Grove Baptist Church.
Hazel Kathryn Lambert Taylor
Hazel Kathryn Lambert Taylor, 94, of Lancaster, SC died August 14 at her home. She was born April 3, 1912, in Aquone, NC, the daughter of the late Richard Alexander Lambert and Alice Passmore Lambert. She was the wife of the late J. Richard Taylor. She retired from Springs Industries and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by two brothers, William P. “Bob” Lambert and Sherman Lambert; and four sisters, Estie Coleman, Lear Garrison, Ida Garris and Sallie Briscoe.
Surviving are a son, Kenneth Taylor and wife Vicki of Clemmons; two daughters, Barbara Hunter and husband Glenn of High Point and Sandra Walden and husband Allen of Lancaster; five grandchildren, Mitch Hunter, Tammy Bowman, Brian Pate, Donella Edwards and Debbie Robinson; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Hartley Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Lancaster Memorial Park.
Rev. Harold F. Elsner
Rev. Harold F. Elsner, 74, of Clemmons died October 10 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born July 11, 1932, in Manhattan, N.Y., to Harold Francis and Marion Dorothy “Dolly” Whelan Elsner. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was a member of the Old Town Lodge Masons. Father Elsner retired after serving as an Episcopal priest in New York, Michigan, Florida and North Carolina. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan E. Jacobsen.
Surviving are his wife of 26 years, Alice Elsner; seven children, Diana Anderson of Arizona; Michael T. Elsner and wife Susan of Pfafftown; Eileen V. Martin and husband Russell of Mocksville; Maggie A. Elsner of Winston-Salem; Robert J. Elsner and wife Betsy of Due West, S.C.; Kristen R. Jacobsen and wife Patti of Rowlett, Texas; and Eric Jacobsen and wife Bonnie of Hurst, Texas; two brothers, Donald Elsner of Ansted, W.Va., and Steve Elsner of New York; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was held at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church.

Buddie Foster
Buddie Foster, 81, of Advance, died October 13 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born February 14, 1925, in Davie County to the late William Giles and Sallie Ann Livengood Foster. He retired from Hanes after 43 years of service and enjoyed spending quality time with his family. He was a very faithful member of Fork Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, Training Union director and RA leader. He was preceded in death by a son, Don Foster, on September 1, 1997; five sisters, Thelma Allen, Titi Bailey, Ruth Shillinglaw, Rea Foster and Louise Jones; and a brother, W.G. Foster Jr.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Billie Alexander Foster of the home; a daughter, Bonnie Goodin of Advance; a son, Dean Foster and wife Harriett of Clemmons; three grandchildren, Ryan Foster and wife Mandy of Omaha, Neb.; Derek Foster and wife Jen of Raleigh; and Austin Goodin of Advance; a daughter-in-law, Jane Jones Foster of Mocksville; a niece, Peggy Rummage and husband Felix of Lexington; a nephew, Gray Carter and wife Ruby of Advance and Jack Carter and wife Dot of Advance; and many more nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Fork Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Garrett and Rev. Ken Evans officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
James Eugene Pickard
James Eugene Pickard, 72, of Winston-Salem died October 11 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Forsyth County to James Samuel and Bessie Knouse Pickard. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Patricia Huff Pickard of the home; two sons, Keith Pickard and wife Mary Jane of Lewisville and Michael Pickard and wife Shelly of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Daniel James Pickard of Winston-Salem; a special mother-in-law, Hazel Tesh Huff; a brother-in-law, Donald L. Huff; two nieces; a nephew; and a special family friend, Betty Teague.
Funeral services were held at Parklawn Mausoleum Chapel with Chaplain Randy Hillman officiating.
Frances Amelia Pitts Broadway
Frances Amelia Pitts Broadway, 95, of Raleigh died October 13 at Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community. She was born on December 2, 1910, the daughter of Dr. James W. Pitts and Amelia White Pitts. After working for Carolina Power & Light, she married Olin H. Broadway in 1935 and became a homemaker. She was a member of the Garden Club, Women’s Club and the Book Club in Raleigh. She was also a member of many bridge clubs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Olin Harvin Broadway Sr.; a son, James H. Broadway; three sisters; and five brothers.
Surviving are sons, Olin Harvin Broadway Jr. of Charlotte and James Wesley Broadway of Charlotte; a daughter, Fabian Amelia Broadway Jackson of Clemmons; seven grandchildren, Williams J. Broadway of New York City, Elizabeth B. Gionis of Charlotte; Fabian Brandon Broadway of Charlotte, Olin H. Broadway III, of Atlanta, Anne B. Welsh of Charlotte, Eric Broadway of Charlotte, Catherine B. Ficca of Richmond, Va.; and also 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Mitchell Funeral Home at Raleigh Memorial Park, with burial following.
Lillian Stephens Branch
Lillian Stephens Branch, 88, of Dobson died October 9. She was born August 22, 1918, in Stokes County to James Arthur and Cora Etta Hill Stephens. She was the widow of the late William Dillard Branch and was a member of Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Westfield.
Surviving are three daughters, Novella Bell of Salisbury, Mary Etta Moxley of Gloucester Point, Va., and Linda Jackson and husband Tony of High Point; two sons, J.W. Branch and wife Joan of Dobson and Harold Branch and wife Peggy of Lewisville; and a sister, Alma S. Mitchell of Mount Airy.
Funeral services were held at Moody-Davis Funeral Home in Dobson. Burial followed at Fisher River Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Robert Walter McCann Sr.
Robert Walter McCann Sr., 81, of Elkin died October 10 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. He was born October 14, 1924, in Wilkes County to Closure E. and Hallie Tucker McCann. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a member of Jonesville Pentecostal Holiness Church and the Lion’s Club. He retired from Chatham Manufacturing. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Surviving are his wife, Alta Marie Owens McCann; two sons, Robert Walter McCann Jr. of Clemmons, Kendall Tucker McCann of Millers Creek; a daughter, Sharon Raye McCann of Thurmond; one sister, Ethyl West and husband Ed of Black Mountain; four grandchildren, Todd McCann of Huntington Beach, Calif., Michaele Beiza of Las Vegas; Monique Whisenhunt of Lakeland, Fla., and Autumn Edwards of Pilot Mountain; and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Jonesville Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Tim Lane officiating. Burial followed at Crestwood Memorial Gardens.
Mary Ellen Johnson
Mary Ellen Johnson, 67, of Lewisville died October 11 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born on January 20, 1939, to the late Ross and Edna Beard. She was a dedicated sales director for Best Western Hotels. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandchild, Derek Brown.
Surviving are her children, Joann Brown and husband Ronnie of East Bend, Gayle Norman and husband Rex of East Bend and Ronnie Johnson of Stokesdale; and grandchildren Danielle Brown, Wesley Norman, Nicholas Norman, Calvin Norman and Andrew Johnson.
A memorial service was held at Gentry Family Chapel in Yadkinville with Rev. Patty Choplin and Rev. Jimmy Lancaster officiating. Burial followed at New Home United Methodist Church

Garvey Washington Shore
Garvey Washington Shore, 79, of Hamptonville died October 14 at Yadkin Nursing Center. He was born August 18, 1927, in Yadkin County to Alfred Jay and Ella Mae Pinnix Shore. He was a retired farmer and security guard. He loved horses and fishing. He was a member of Marler Road Baptist Church, Hamptonville. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Fletcher and Granville Shore; and a sister, Eulalah Swaim.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Gaye Oliver Shore of the home; a son, Wayne Shore and wife Lynn of Hamptonville; a daughter, Elaine S. Haynes and husband Dale of Lincolnton; four grandchildren, Levi Shore and wife Ginger, Jonathan Steelman, Zane Shore and Allison Berman; a stepgrandchild, Levi Thompson; three sisters, Hazel Gregory of Boonville, Magdalene Wall and husband Sam of Yadkinville and Mary Johnson and husband Hurley of Hamptonville; a brother-in-law, Paul Swaim of Lewisville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Marler Road Baptist Church. Burial followed in St. Paul United Methodist Church Cemetery in Hamptonville.
Dorothy Dillon Gross
Dorothy “Dot” Dillon Gross, 72, of Winston-Salem died October 12. She was born November 9, 1933, to John and Blanche Dillon. She was retired from the city of Winston-Salem and was a patient-care assistant. She was a member of Morris Chapel Methodist Church. Her family and friends were her passion. She was happiest when she was with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 38 years, James “Jim” Gross; her brothers, Orville and Gilmer Dillon; brothers-in-law Lawrence Steves, Joe Byrd and Bill Stafford; and sister-in-law, Dot Dillon.
Surviveing are her children, Sharon “Shae” Davis and husband Travis of Winston-Salem; Carolyn Gross of the home; and Rodney Gross and wife Dashia of Kentucky; five grandchildren, Scott Calabritto, Roseann Surratt of Charlotte, Tyler Gross of Kentucky and Michael and Austin Gross of the home; three great-grandchildren, Daylon, Jacob and Blaze Surratt of Charlotte; three sisters, Norma Stafford of Winston-Salem and Helen Byrd and Odessa Stevens of Walkertown; sister-in-law Mabel Dillon of Kernersville; her special friends, Wayne and Becky Choplin of Pfafftown and Kenny Aldridge of Lewisville; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Wallace Cole, her nephew, officiating. Entombment followed at Crestview Memorial Park.
Wiladeane Burch Burr
Wiladeane Burch Burr, 77, of Lewisville died June 15 at the home of her daughter. She was born March 2, 1925, in Anson County, to Erastus Hollingsworth and Annie Lowery Burch, Mount Croghan, S.C. She moved to Sumter in 1967 where she was employed for 26 years in management with Campbell Soup Co. During her career with Campbell Soup she was a TWIN honoree (Tribute to Women in Industry). After retirement, she devoted many hours to volunteering in her community and dedicated herself to helping others. She moved to the Winston-Salem area in 1998 to be closer to her family during her illness. Among the many accomplishments in her life, she was most proud of her involvement in her church and her family. She was a member of Wise Drive Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the "Willing Workers" of the Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John David Burr; her parents; a brother, Charles Burch of Mount Croghan; and a sister, Analiza Burch-Sikes, also of Mount Croghan.
Surviving are two sons, Roderick David Burr and wife Cathy of Farmington, Mich. and Richard Hollingsworth Burr and wife Sharon of Lake Mary, Fla.; a daughter, Robin Burr-DeVane, and husband Chris of Lewisville; seven grandchildren, Michelle Burr Floyd of Louisville, Ky., Michael David Burr of Farmington, Mich., Jason Hollingsworth Burr of Lake Mary, Fla., Sophia Renee Burr of Severville, Tenn., Jennifer Morgan Lee of Lewisville, Patrick Schyuler Lee of Sumter, S.C., and Priscilla O'Ryan Burr of Lake Mary, Fla.; and three great-grandchildren, Ryan, Kaylee and Kelsey Floyd of Louisville, Ky. Also surviving are two brothers, Frank Burch and wife Jane of Pageland, S.C. and Eugene Burch and wife Lynn of Mount Croghan, S.C.; a sister, Nancy Burch Mangum of Pageland, S.C.; a brother-in-law, Walter Burr and wife Betty of Chesterfield; a sister-in-law, Sarah Doner and husband Bob of Pensacola, Fla.; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and long-time friends.
Funeral services were held at Miller Rivers Caulder Funeral Home in Chesterfield, S.C., with Rev. Harold Kirkland officiating. A graveside service and interment took place at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Sumter, S.C.
Georgianna B. Wagner
Georgianna B. Wagner of Clemmons died June 12 at her home. She grew up in western Pennsylvania and taught in the Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia and North Carolina school systems for more than 17 years. She also owned and operated restaurants and retail gift stores.
Surviving are her husband, William; her mother, Mildred; two sisters; and two brothers.
A private service was held.
Harold Lloyd Brant
Harold Lloyd Brant of Clemmons died June 13. He was a resident of Clemmons for the past seven years, having moved from Indiana. He was a member of Peace Christian Church in High Point.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia; a son, Edward Brant and wife Suzanne, (whom he considered his own daughter); grandsons, Will, Clint and Evan; a brother, Ed Brant and wife Peggy of Winston-Salem; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel with Pastor Dan Roberts officiating.
Richard Maxwell Conrad
Richard Maxwell "Max" Conrad, 97, of Pfafftown died June 5 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born June 20, 1904, in the Pfafftown community to Thomas Joseph Conrad and Marion Elizabeth Brock Conrad. He was a lifelong farmer and was a member of numerous farming-related organizations, including tenure as chairman of the A.S.C. committee in Forsyth County. The Conrad family farm is designated a Century Farm because it has been farmed continually for more than 100 years by members of the Conrad family. He was a member of Lewisville United Methodist Church. He and his late wife were foster parents to 22 children over the years. In semi-retirement he took up camping as a hobby. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Miller Conrad, in February 2001; a brother, W. Brock Conrad Sr. in 1985; his sister, Beulah Summers, and a foster daughter, Judy Kittenstock.
Surviving are his nephew, W. Brock Conrad Jr. of Columbia, S.C.; his niece, Mary Beth Becton of Augusta, Ga.; great-nephews W. Brock Conrad III of Columbia and Richard Maxwell Conrad II of Bethel, Alaska, and Dr. James Lewis Becton Jr. of Columbia; a great-niece, Dr. Mary Elizabeth Becton of Augusta, Ga.; great-great-nephews James Hardwick Becton and Sullins Conrad Becton; and a cousin, William F. Brock of Farmington.
Funeral services were held at Lewisville United Methodist Church with Rev. Don Routh officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Minnie L. Wyatt Ruff
Minnie L. Wyatt Ruff, 81, of Clemmons died June 13 at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons. She was born June 26, 1920, in Wilkes County to Franklin A. and Plina Woodie Wyatt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Olin Ruff, in 1998.
Surviving are two brothers, Harrison Wyatt of Pigeon Forge, Tenn. and George Wyatt of Dublin, Va.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Clayton, Frank & Sons Funeral Chapel in Crescent City, Fla. A graveside service followed at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.
Trung Hien Thai
Trung "Kenny" Hien Thai, 19, of Lewisville, died June 13. He was born to Binh Quang Thai and Tryet Bach Do Thai on May 28, 1983 in San Jose, Calif.
Surviving are his parents of the home; two sisters, Kathy M. "Bobbie" Thai of Winston-Salem and Katie of Lewisville; a brother, Tom D. Thai of Lewisville; a nephew, Chance Hien Farris; and a friend, Aaron Farris.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Son's Clemmons Chapel with Rev. Michael Manh officiating, and burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
David Henderson Neely Jr.
David Henderson Neely Jr., 76, of Pfafftown, died June 11 in Henderson, Nev. He was born July 2, 1925, in Forsyth County to David H. Neely Sr. and Dianna Golding Neely. He was a member of Salem Masonic Lodge #289 A.F. & A.M., Oasis Shrine of Charlotte and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was baptized in the Methodist Faith and was a Private First Class in the U.S. Army during World War II. He fought on the front lines in the Battles of Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe receiving five Bronze Stars and one Silver Star.
Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Joyce Nowlin Neely of the home, and a son, David H. Neely III, Attorney at Law, of Henderson, Nev.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park with Rev. Garland Hall officiating and with Masonic Rites by Salem Lodge and Full military Honors by V.F.W. District 11 Memorial Honor Guard.
