William Nathan Scales
William Nathan Scales, 83, of Winston-Salem died November 30 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Scales was born October 2, 1921, in Stokes County to Joseph and Daisy Scales. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. as the division manager of Leaf Processing with 35 and a half years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne Latham Scales; and a sister, S. Fan Leake.
Surviving are a daughter, Virginia Bates and husband Warren of Winston-Salem; a son, Stuart Scales and wife Mary of Lexington, KY; three grandchildren, Kimberly Marino and husband Vincent of Clemmons, Hunter Frizzelle and wife Amy of Wilmington, and Virginia D. Scales of Lexington, KY; four great-grandchildren, Clay Allen Jones, Kaitlyn Jones, Anna Marino and Nathan Frizzelle; and a brother, J. Shelton Scales of Martinsville, VA.
A private memorial service was held.

Joseph Lippert Thomas
Joseph Lippert Thomas, 95, of Pfafftown died in his sleep November 28 at Alterra Clare Bridge of Winston-Salem. He was born October 5, 1909, in Elyria, Ohio, to Ursula Lippert Thomas Meeks and Fred Thomas. His father died when he was very young and his stepfather was Willard Meeks. He lived most of his life in Danville, IL, before moving to Pfafftown in 1979. He served his country during World War II as an anti-aircraft instructor for the U.S. Army. He was a conductor for the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad until retirement in 1972. He was a life member of the Elks and the Knights of Columbus. He sang with the Auctioneer Barbershop Chorus for many years and was a member and usher at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. He was an avid golfer and had been a member of Grandview Golf Course.
Surviving are his wife, Verdell Peterson Thomas of the home; his daughter, Karen Thomas Anderson of Pfafftown; a son, Michael W. Thomas and wife Maria of Lawrenceville, GA; four grandchildren, Kirsten Anderson Olsen and husband Andrew of Richmond, VA, Katrin Anderson of Richmond, VA, Erin Anderson of Charlotte and David Thomas of Brooklyn, NY; two great-grandsons, Graham and Marsden Olsen of Richmond, VA; and several nieces and nephews in Illinois and Iowa.
A memorial service will be held at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church.

Iris Spaugh Fulton
Iris Spaugh “Sister” Fulton, 68, of Pfafftown died December 1 at her home. She was born September 17, 1936, a daughter of Harrison Spaugh and Lydia Pilcher Spaugh. She was employed with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., retiring after 32 years of service, and was a longtime member of Brookstown United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her mother of Yadkinville; her husband of 46 years, David Fulton of the home; a daughter, Gina Reed and husband Johnny of Oakwood, GA; and a grandchild, Michael Reed.
A graveside service was held at Brookstown United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Roland Barnhardt officiating.

Ida Mae Vanhoy Norman
Ida Mae Vanhoy Norman, 90, of Kernersville died December 1 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born August 29, 1914, in Forsyth County, a daughter of Arthur and Annie Fulp Vanhoy. She was a member of Old Orchard Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Munce Norman.
Surviving are a daughter, Wanda Tesh and husband Richard of Winston-Salem; a granddaughter, Donna Carpenter and husband Tom of Clemmons; two great-grandchildren, Meghan and Brittani; four sisters, Edith Voss of Belews Creek and Lib Douglas, Treva Williams and Vennie Speaks, all of Kernersville; and two brothers, Henry and Fred Vanhoy of Kernersville.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel with Elder Vance Jones and Brother Jerry Williams officiating. Burial followed in Old Orchard Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Patsy Ruth Bratton McIntyre
Patsy Ruth Bratton McIntyre, 65, of High Point died December 1 in Forsyth Medical Center. She was born April 13, 1939, in Castlewood, VA, a daughter of Stuart Bratton and Bessie Collier Bratton. She was retired from McIntyre Metals of Thomasville and was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, the Ruby Martin Circle and the Ledford Homemakers Club. She was married November 26, 1959, to John Paul McIntyre. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim and Woodrow Bratton; and a sister, Estelle Ackerman.
Surviving are her husband of the home; two sons, Jeff McIntyre and wife Debbie of Clemmons and Scott McIntyre and wife Kristi of Knoxville, TN; four grandchildren, Josh, Amanda, Hannah and Sarah McIntyre; two brothers, Harry Bratton of Blountville, TN, and Paul Bratton of Castlewood, VA; two sisters, Grace Couch of Thomasville and Sue Curtis of Bristol, TN; a sister-in-law, Ruth Bratton of Dungannon, VA; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Shady Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael H. Goode officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Betty Smitherman Jones
Betty Smitherman Jones, 82, of Mocksville died November 27 at her home following an extended illness. She was born November 13, 1922, in Marshalltown, Iowa to the late Dalt M. and Stella Lakey Smitherman of Eastbend. She was retired from General Safety in St. Clair Shores, MI. She was a longtime member of Baltimore United Methodist Church in Yadkin County, She was preceded in death by her husband, William R. Jones; two sons, Charles Ray and George David; three brothers, Ray, Lakey and Abraham Smitherman; and a sister, Virginia Poindexter.
Surviving are her daughter, Doris Jones Snyder and husband George of Washington, MI; a brother, Thomas D. Smitherman and wife Carolyn of Lewisville; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Baltimore United Methodist Church with Rev. Matthew S. Farabow and Rev. Jack Stratas officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Kate Langston Foster
Kate Langston Foster, 97, of Mocksville died November 29 at Autumn Care. She was born March 17, 1907, in Davie County to the late William Allen and Susan Mae Click Langston. She was a retired teacher with the Davie County schools. She was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher. She was a charter member of Alpha Beta Kappa in Davie County. She helped organize the Retired Teachers Association of Davie County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Egbert Foster, in June 2000, and 11 siblings.
Surviving are a daughter, Willo’deane Foster Tenery and husband Robert of Mocksville; four grandchildren, Walter Tenery and wife Joanne of Arlington, Texas, Sam Tenery and wife Debbie of Mocksville, David Tenery and wife Stephanie of Nebo and Kathy Martin and husband Gary of Lewisville; four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruby Howard of Lexington.
Funeral services were held at Eaton Funeral Chapel with Rev. Rick Cockerham and Rev. Shelby Harbour officiating. Burial followed in Fork Baptist Church Cemetery.

Coletta Mary Carter
Coletta Mary Carter, 76, of Winston-Salem died November 29. She was born September 15, 1928, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late John H. and Adeline Mantel O’Neill. She spent her life as a wife and mother. She also served as a teacher’s aide at South Park High School in Winston-Salem. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons. She was married to her husband, Mark W. Carter, on July 31, 1954, and celebrated 43 years of marriage before his death. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Philomena Marie Carter.
Surviving are her children, Mary Waren and husband Craig, Joseph Carter and wife Dora, Stephen Carter and wife Judith, Monica Adams and husband Keith, Michael Carter and wife Nancy, Gerard Carter and wife Eileen, Martin Carter and wife Deborah and Ruth Pappas and husband Fredrick; her grandchildren Timothy, Daniel, Emma, Elizabeth, Catherine, Rachel, Haley, Ryan, Harrison, Molly, Charlotte, Patricia, Jennifer, Christopher, James, Al and Colette; and her brother, sisters, nieces, nephews and many friends.
A funeral Mass was held at Holy Family Catholic Church, and burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.

Dorothy Holcombe Ray
Dorothy Holcombe Ray, 86, of Asheville, formerly of Clemmons, died December 1. She was born January 26, 1918, to the late C.A. and Bonnie Holcombe of the Stocksville community near Weaverville in Buncombe County. She was a lifelong and active member of Arden Presbyterian Church in Arden and was also a past worthy matron and lifetime member of the Asheville chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight Ell Ray, who passed away in 1989 and a brother, William T. Holcombe.
Surviving are her daughter, Denise Lange and husband Richard of Arden; three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Emily and Richie Lange, all of Arden; three sisters, Mary Chambers, Evelyn Carter and husband Talmadge, all of Candler, and Marjorie Stockton and husband John of Fairview; and a sister-in-law, Gerry Holcombe of Candler.
A memorial service was held in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home in Arden with Rev. Ed Graham officiating.

Hubert Eugene Hill
Hubert Eugene Hill, 72, of Clemmons died May 8 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born May 5, 1934 in Davidson County. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was employed by the Budd Group of Winston-Salem and was formerly associated with Lexington Motor Co. and VanLandingham Motor Co. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lessie Mae Byerly; and a sister, Hazel Dipper.
Surviving are his wife, Peggy June Kincaid of the home, whom he married April 20, 1957; two daughters, Wendy Weinstein and husband Mike of South Riding, Va., and Tracy Dowdy of Advance; a son-in-law, David Dowdy of Advance; three grandchildren, Thomas Hill Weinstein, Victoria Paige Hill and Ian Alexander Dowdy; two lifelong friends from his service in the Air Force, Ronnie Weaver of Savannah, Ga. and Mr. and Mrs. C.B. Till of Titusville, Fla.; and a dear friend of many years, Ray Stanley.
A memorial graveside service was held in God’s Acre on the campus of Mills Home (affiliate of Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina in Thomasville) with Rev. Ron Richardson officiating.

Richard Bryden James
Chief Warrant Officer Richard “Rick” Bryden James, 44, of Lewisville, died May 6 while on active duty with the North Carolina National Guard. He lost his life in a helicopter crash near Broadway. The accident happened May 5. He was born April 6, 1961, in Milwaukee, Wis., and was the son of Jane “Sue” Bryden James of Statesville and the late Dr. Richard L. James, who died September 4, 2004. He lived numerous places throughout his life with his family; from 1961 to 1976 in Valders and South Milwaukee, Wis.; from 1976 to 1978 in Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; from 1978 to 1980, Bremerhaven, Germany; from 1980 to 1982, Winston-Salem; from 1989 to 1997, Coraopolis, Pa.; and from 1997 to 2005, Lewisville. He graduated from Osterholtz American High School in Osterholtz, Germany, and Guilford Technical Community College in aviation management technology. He was a member of the First Battalion 130th Aviation Regiment Battalion of the N.C. National Guard for 16 years. He was an AH-64 pilot with both Company C and Company B units from Morrisville. He entered the U.S. Army on June 30, 1982, and attended basic training October 21, 1982, at Fort Jackson, S.C. On December 16, 1982, he attended the Aircraft Power Plant Course at Fort Eustus, Va., and on July 6, 1989, he graduated from flight school and was appointed a warrant officer (WO1) at Ft. Rucker, Ala. On October 1, 1989, he attended the AH-64 Aircraft Qualification Course. On February 12, 1991, he mobilized for Desert Storm. On October 10, 1991, he was appointed chief warrant officer 2. On March 3, 2001, he was appointed chief warrant officer 3. On January 21, 2003, he mobilized for Operation Enduring Freedom, Kandahar, Afghanistan. On June 4, 2004, he was awarded the Senior Army Aviation Badge. He received an Air Medal, three Army Commendation Medals, three Army Achievement Medals, the Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, two National Defense Service Medals, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the NCO Professional Development Ribbon. He had 1,900 total flight hours and 300 hours of combat flight time in Afghanistan. He was also employed as a trans-Atlantic flight attendant as a German speaking Lo/do for U.S. Airways since 1990, based out of Philadelphia. He was an avid lover of flying, animals, nature, music and computers and had many friends from all over the world.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his son, Trevor James; two daughters, Katelyn and Hannah James; and former wife Vicki E. James, all of Lewisville; a sister, Connie J. Morrison and husband Bobby and their children, Suzanne and Amanda, all of Statesville; a brother, Chris James and wife Missy and their children, Carson and Mayson, all of Salisbury; an aunt, Mary J. Tyrey and husband Dr. Lee Tyrey of Durham; and several cousins, Dr. Scott Tyrey and wife Mary of Raleigh, Ann T. Payne and husband John of Raleigh, and Marc Tyrey and wife Kelli of High Point.
Funeral services were held at Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel in Statesville with Rev. Bobby Henderson and Chaplain Col. Morrison of the N.C. National Guard officiating. Full military honors followed at the veterans section of Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the NCNG Family Readiness Program (Morrisville), Attn: Capt. Sherrill Murray, 4150 Reedy Creek Road, Raleigh, NC 27607-6410.

Judith L. Wawrzyniakowski
Judith L. Wawrzyniakowski, 59, of Lexington died May 7 at Clemmons Nursing and Rehab. She was born June 15, 1945 in Fort Watson Beach, Fla. to Thomas and Lucy R. Exton. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Mocksville and was a hairdresser.
Surviving are her husband, Raymond Wawrzyniakowski of the home; two daughters, Jadine Pilotte of Oxford, Pa. and Jennifer Merklinger of Reading, Pa.; a sister, Jeannie Sloss of Cummings, Ga.; two brothers, Tom Exton of Omaha, Neb. and Jerry Exton of Apollo, Pa.; and six grandchildren.
A memorial Mass was held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Andrew Draper, T.O.R., officiating.

Mary Nelson Tucker
Mary Nelson Tucker, 94, of Clemmons died May 8 at Vienna Village Retirement Community in Pfafftown. She was born in Patrick County, Va., to Walter G. and Florence Hill Nelson. A member of Hillsdale Primitive Baptist Church, she attended Immanuel Baptist Church in recent years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter C. Tucker, in 1980; brothers Holmes and Dick Nelson; sons-in-law J.C. Tucker Jr. and Archie Huff; nine brothers-in-law; and five sisters-in-law.
Surviving are three daughters, Marie Pegram and husband Leo and Doris Tucker, all of Lewisville, and Betty Huff of Clemmons; two sons, Jerry Tucker and wife Mary Ann of Morristown, Tenn., and James Tucker and wife Joyce of Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren, Joel Pegram and fiancee Renee Knez, Rex Pegram and wife Christy, Kathy Tucker, Calvin Tucker and wife Debra, Alison Huff, Richard Huff, Michael Tucker and wife Angie and Christopher Tucker and wife Cindy; great-grandchildren Katie and Jeffrey Pegram, Austin, Emma and Ellie Tucker, and Juleigh Anne Tucker; three sisters, Sue Amos of Critz, Va., Lorene Bryant and Nancy Wood and husband Delano of Stuart, Va.; a brother, Billy Nelson and wife Willie of Bassett, Va.; four sisters-in-law; and many devoted nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.
Funeral services were held at Immanuel Baptist Church with Rev. L.C. Taylor and Elder Billy Knight officiating. Burial followed in Westlawn Memorial Gardens in Clemmons.

Thelma Catherine Easter Long
Thelma Catherine Easter Long, 79, of Pfafftown died May 10 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born March 20, 1926, in Hillsville, Va., to Jacob and Caroline Allen Easter. She lived most of her life in Winston-Salem and was a member of Freedom Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kelly Long; two brothers, Allen and Garnett Easter; and three sisters, Savada Bedsaul, Mabel Cox and Hazel Rippey.
Surviving are a son, Dr. Adrian Long and wife Jan Peterka of Maryland; two granddaughters, Natalie and Amanda; two sisters, Glenda Dalton and Irene Clodfelter; and three brothers, Harris, Cameron and Perry Easter.
Funeral services were heldat Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with Dr. John Byerly officiating.

Theodore Orville Peoples Jr.
Theodore “Ted” Orville Peoples Jr., 63, of Winston-Salem died May 9 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born May 28, 1941 in Forsyth County to Theodore Orville Peoples Sr. and Grace Ball Peoples. He was a member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church and had retired after many years as a long-haul truck driver. He was preceded in death by his father.
Surviving are his wife, Wanda Williams Peoples of the home; two sons, Theodore O. Peoples III and wife Laura of Kernersville and Thad W. Peoples and wife Brenda of Clemmons; four daughters, Wenona Vistoso of Pasadena, Md., Denise Fulton and husband George of Lexington, Monique Peoples and husband Eddie of Conover, and April Bostian and husband Steve of Boone.; his mother of Holden Beach; and 12 grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at New Philadelphia Moravian Church with Dr. Worth Green and Rev. Arkon Stewart officiating.

Ruth Craver Tedder
Ruth Craver Tedder, 81, of De Land, Fla., the wife of the late William E. Tedder, died May 10 in De Land. She was born November 14, 1923, to Millard and Viola Sowers Craver. She had been in declining health for the past five years, and her condition worsened in the past several months. She was a member of Kepler Road Baptist Church in De Land and was retired from General Electric. She was a resident of South Fork and Clemmons before moving to Florida in 1953. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Rowan Albert Craver; and a sister, Edna Craver Tedder.
Surviving are a sister, Nancy Craver Southern of Clemmons; a brother, Roy Craver and wife Lucille of Courtney; a special niece, Wanda Burke of Mocksville; another niece, Annette Caudill; and three nephews, Roy Craver Jr., Phillip Southern and Dale Southern.
Funeral services were held at Vogler Clemmons Chapel with Rev. Claxton Hall officiating. Burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory.

Mildred Catherine Warner
Mildred Catherine Warner, 90, of Lewisville died May 10 at Clemmons Nursing and Rehabilitation. She was born July 28, 1914, in Lewisville to Bert Jacob and Lillie Whitman Warner. She was retired from Hanes Knitting, now Sara Lee Corp., with 47 years of service. She was a member of Warner’s Chapel Church of Christ where she taught Sunday school for 60 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Clifton Burton Warner; and two sisters, Louise Boose and Helen Marie Warner.
Surviving are a sister, Virginia Warner Elam of Lewisville; several nieces and nephews, Burton Warner and wife Denise of Southport, Carol Warner of Castalia, Kathy Chamberlain and husband Charles of Zuni, Va., Nelva Crump of Zuni and David Elam of Yadkinville; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services were held at Warner’s Chapel Church of Christ with Minister Paul Kirkpatrick officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Earl Eli Bost III
Earl Eli Bost III, 65, of Winston-Salem died May 9 at home after an extended illness. He was born May 16, 1939, in Catawba County to the late Earl Bost Jr. and Frances Sherrill Bost of Newton. He retired from Champion Industries after 30 years of service. He served in the Armed Forces for 27 years and served in the Vietname War. He was preceded in death by his father.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife of 42 years, Mary Baity Bost of the home; a daughter, Mary Rogers and husband Charles of Clemmons; a son, Jerry Dwayne Bost and fiancee Melissa Hess of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Meghan Alicia Rogers, Sarah Leann Rogers and Anthony Edward Bost; a sister, Brenda Saunders and husband Bob of Newton; two brothers, Danny Bost and wife Jean of Winston-Salem, and Michael Bost and wife Dianne of Hickory; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park with Rev. Sylvia Wilham officiating.

William Ralph Bowman
William Ralph Bowman, 93, formerly of Germanton, a resident of Vienna Village in Pfafftown and the husband of Bertie Johnson Bowman, died May 13. He was born in Stokes County on October 16, 1911, the son of the late William Preston and Nannie Montgomery Bowman. He was a member of Oak Grove Moravian Church in Winston-Salem for 55 years and was active serving as an elder, trustee and Sunday school teacher for more than 20 years. He was a former part owner and operator of Paragon Food Center in Ogburn Station for a number of years. He was a member of The Gideons Christian International for more than 25 years and was instrumental in starting the Gideons Jail Ministry. He was also a Volunteer at The Oaks and at both Forsyth Medical Center and Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in the intensive care unit for more than 10 years. He had also been active in the Pellcare Nursing Home Sunday school ministry.
Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Bertie Johnson Bowman of Vienna Village; three sons, William Leslie Bowman and wife Stephanie of High Rock Lake, Ted Wayne Bowman and wife Marge of St. Paul, Minn., and Thomas Madison Bowman and wife Bonnie of Advance; five grandchildren, Dawn Parascadolo of Rural Hall, David Bowman and Michael Bowman, both of Charlotte, Keely Bridges of Advance and Rhett Bowman of High Rock Lake; and five great-grandchildren, Karley Marie Bowman and Christopher David Bowman, both of Charlotte, Francesca Eve Paracadolo of Rural Hall and Grace Isabel Bridges and Kate Frances Bridges, both of Advance.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall with Rev. Matthew Allen and Rev. Charles Fishel officiating. A committal service and entombment followed in the Mausoleum at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall.
