RALEIGH -- Mrs. Arbetrice McLean Bowden, 90, of 3112 Burntwood Circle, formerly of Lillington, died Sunday in LaSalle Health Care Center.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Norrington AME Zion Church in Lillington by Dr. Michael S. Bell. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Dafford Funeral Home of Dunn.

Mrs. Bowden is survived by five daughters, Dr. Rebecca B. Johnson of Atlanta, Betty Morris, Josephine B. Strickland and Paulette Bowden, all of Raleigh, and Linda B. Wright of Las Vegas; a son, Paul Bowden of Coats; 25 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.

James W. Bell II
(Dated Tuesday, December 21, 1999)
Retired Sgt. 1st Class James William Bell II, 76, of 4901 Lakehurst Drive, Fayetteville, died Sunday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Mr. Bell was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He retired after 25 years in the military. Mr. Bell worked with the Nearly New Thrift Shop. He was a sales associate for 20 years at J.C. Penny in the shoe department. Mr. Bell was awarded the Commander General’s Award for Community Service with three stars by the commander of the 18th Airborne Corps.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Rogers and Breece Funeral Home chapel by Pastor B.G. Langston. Burial with military honors will be in LaFayette Memorial Park.

Mr. Bell is survived by his wife, Dora Mae Bell of Fayetteville; two daughters, Sondra K. Hester of Whiteville and Patricia Turner of Fayetteville; a son, Dr. James W. Bell III of Fremantle, Western Australia; two sisters, Mickey Depp of Cincinnati and Betty Leffel of Brunswick, Maine; a brother, Ronald D. Bell of Worthington, Ky.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

C. Wayne Bass
(Dated Tuesday, December 21, 1999)
DUNN -- Charles Wayne Bass, 53, of 65 Suggs Road died Monday.

Mr. Bass formerly worked for the North Carolina Department of Transportation. He was a member of Free Spirit Worship Center and the Johnston/Harnett counties Chapter of the American Red Cross.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Free Spirit Worship Center by the Revs. Ronnie Jones and Jimmy Barnhill. Burial will be in Williford Cemetery.

Mr. Bass is survived by his wife, Ruby M. Bass of the home; two daughters, Shelia Smith and Lou Ann Beasley, both of Dunn; two brothers, Herbert J. Bass of Wilmington and Jarvis R. Bass of Erwin; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Cromartie-Miller & Lee Funeral Home.

Mildred H. Barbour
(Dated Tuesday, December 21, 1999)
BENSON -- Mrs. Mildred Hockaday Barbour, 74, of 323 Federal Road died Monday in Rex Hospital in Raleigh.

Mrs. Barbour was a retired receptionist and secretary for Dr. Manmohan Singh in Smithfield. She was a member of St. Mary’s Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday in St. Mary’s Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church by the Rev. Aubrey Williamson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Barbour is survived by her husband, David D. ‘‘D.D.’’ Barbour Jr.; a daughter, Beverly B. Allen of Benson; a son, David D. Barbour III of Coats; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Rose & Graham Funeral Home.

Geraldine A. Allen

FOUR OAKS -- Mrs. Geraldine Adams Allen, 68, of 1034 B. Juniper Church Road died Monday.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Lees Chapel Advent Christian Church by the Rev. Howard Balltzglier. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Allen is survived by her husband, Ed G. Allen; a daughter, Linda Parker of Four Oaks; a sister, Velma A. Allen of Pittsboro; and two granddaughters.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at West & Dunn Funeral Home.

Marcella Rorie

CHADBOURN -- Ms. Marcella Rorie, 38, of 213 Huffman St. died Saturday.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church by the Rev. Jessie Timmons. Burial will be in Belvue Cemetery.

Ms. Rorie is survived by her father, Daniel Rorie Sr. of Chadbourn; four brothers, Daniel Rorie Jr. and Wilfred Rorie, both of Chadbourn, Bobby Rorie of Whiteville and Winfred Rorie of Germany; and four sisters, Lee E. Kelly and Sarah L. Rorie, both of Chadbourn, Elnita Davis of Manhattan, N.Y., and Wanda Badley of Fayetteville.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at D&A Funeral Service.

Arthur L. McDowell

LAURINBURG -- Arthur Lee McDowell, 45, of 20420 Blakely Road died Friday.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in New Light Holiness Church by the Rev. Doris McEachin. Burial will be in Glorious Pentecostal Church cemetery in Wagram. Arrangements are being handled by Morris Funeral Home.

Mr. McDowell is survived by his wife, Ethel McDowell; four daughters, Sharell Flowers of Charlotte, Melinda Gibson and Arnitta L. McDowell, both of Laurinburg, and Aquetta R. McDowell; two brothers, Willie J. McDowell and Richard McDowell, both of Laurinburg; and three grandchildren.

Letha P. Smith

CARTHAGE -- Mrs. Letha P. Smith of 3733 Union Church Road died Tuesday in her home.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Vass Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Robert H. Ramey Jr. Burial will be in Johnson Grove Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith is survived by a son, Ronnie Patterson of the home; a brother, Floyd Patterson of Carthage; and three sisters, Alberta Norton and Agnes Blocker, both of Carthage, and Irene Cockman of Southern Pines.

Herbert H. Hash

SANFORD -- Herbert Hoover Hash, 71, of 102 Carthage St. died Monday.

Mr. Hash was a Navy veteran.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in Smith Funeral Home chapel in Broadway by the Rev. Steve Swagger. Burial will be in Broadway Town Cemetery.

Mr. Hash is survived by two sons, Louis A. Hash of Center Line, Mich., and James H. Marks Jr. of Vinton, Va.; five daughters, Lori L. Nieporte of Detroit, Deborah M. Jordan of Wendell, Pam Summerlin of Broadway, Brenda Melton of Raleigh and Wanda Ladd of Selma; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Buddy and Pam Summerlin, 5660 Cool Springs Road, Broadway.

Alonzo D. Freeman

CLARKTON -- Alonzo Dawson Freeman, 78, of 374 Blanks Dairy Road died Monday.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Pierce’s Chapel AME Zion Church by the Rev. Ronald Campbell. Burial will be in Mitchell Field Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

Mr. Campbell is survived by his wife, Lorene C. Freeman; three sons, James W. Freeman and Earl M. Freeman, both of Clarkton, and Alonzo M. Freeman of New York; a daughter, Shirley L. Chambers of Sterling, Va.; five brothers, George D. Freeman, Lloyd L. Freeman, Hansel L. Freeman and Jatha W. Freeman, all of Clarkton, and Clayton W. Freeman of Mary Esther, Fla.; and a sister, Josephine S. Campbell of Clarkton.

Wilma J. Byrd
(Dated Wednesday, December 22, 1999)
ERWIN -- Mrs. Wilma Jean Byrd, 58, of Erwin died Tuesday.

A graveside service will be conducted at noon Thursday in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery by the Rev. Dick Bowen. Arrangements are being handled by Skinner Funeral Home.

Mrs. Byrd is survived by her husband, Waylon M. Byrd of Erwin; a son, Scott Byrd of Fayetteville; a brother, Steve Carroll of West Virginia; three sisters, Dreama Johnson, Penny Pretty and Gay Davis, all of West Virginia; and a grandchild.

The family will receive friends after the service.

Dorothy C. Boyd

RALEIGH -- Ms. Dorothy Clippard ‘‘Dotty’’ Boyd, 77, of Raleigh, formerly of Moore County, died Tuesday in Rex Hospital.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday n Bethesda Cemetery in Aberdeen by the Rev. Phil Enlow.

Ms. Boyd is survived by two sons, Lynn Clippard of Tega Cay, S.C., and Chip Clippard of West End; a daughter, Jackie C. McDonald of Raleigh; a brother, Rudy Averitt of Laredo, Texas; three sisters, Pat Allen and Clara Russ, both of Rockingham, and Jenny Davis of Hamlet; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Powell Funeral Home & Crematory.

Lloyd Carter

CLARKTON -- Lloyd Carter, 79, of 241 Spaulding Lane died Sunday.

The funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Union Baptist Church in Lake Waccamaw by the Rev. Ronald Campbell. Burial will be in Mitchell Field Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

Mr. Carter is survived by his wife, Irene Carter; three daughters, Marcella Carter and Beverly Carter, both of Prince George, Va., and Terry Spaulding of Washington, D.C.; and four sons, Timothy Carter of Riegelwood, Jeffery Spaudling of Whitesboro, Ira Pigford of Inglewood, N.J., and Christopher Spaulding of Clarkton.

Frank Taylor
(Dated Wednesday, December 22, 1999)
BLADENBORO -- Frank Taylor, 68, of 5866 Marsh Road died Monday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.

Mr. Taylor was a veteran of the Army and the Army Reserves. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Lumberton.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Antioch Baptist Church by the Rev. Mark Meadows. Burial will be in Gardens of Faith Cemetery.

Mr. Taylor is survived by his wife, Nell Taylor of the home; three daughters, Carol T. Britt, Kay T. Britt and Brenda R. Taylor, all of Lumberton; three brothers, Jackie Taylor, Ertle Taylor and Johnnie Taylor, all of Lumberton; three sisters, Margaret Townsend of Bladenboro, Betty Russ of Chicago and Shelby Smith of Florida; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory.
