F. Hale Jennings Jr.
F. Hale Jennings Jr., 79, of Lewisville died April 30 at his home. He was born December 5, 1923, in Grayson County, Va., to Fielden Hale Jennings Sr. and Ollie Poole Jennings. He was an avid hunter. He was retired from Advance Milling Co., a division of Lewisville Roller Mills, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II at the Battle of the Bulge and Utah Beach. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Paul, Charlie and Gwyn; and three sisters, Ethel, Hallie and Lettie.
Surviving are his wife, Edith Sites Jennings of the home; a daughter, Myra J. Huffman and husband Jim of Lewisville; a son, Monte Jennings and wife Robin of Yadkinville; four grandsons, David Huffman and wife Amy of Nashville, Tenn., Keith Huffman and wife Dana of Wake Forest, Bryson Jennings and wife Sarah of Yadkinville and Aaron Jennings of Yadkinville; two great-grandchildren, Drew and Maggie; two sisters, Elva J. Griffith and husband Kelly of Shalotte and Grace J. Phillips of Lewisville; a brother, Roy Jennings and wife Ocie of Winston-Salem; and a special sister-in-law, Dorothy Jennings of Lewisville.
Funeral services were held at Lewisville Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Priest, Rev. Ralph Stanley Sr. and Rev. Keith Huffman officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery with military rites by District 11 Memorial Honor Guard.
Margaret Oliver
Margaret Oliver was born January 22, 1932, in Winston-Salem to Robbie Frazier Davis and Henry Jones. She was united in holy matrimony to James Terry Oliver Sr., who preceded her in death in 1979. She was a member of Capernaum Church of Christ and had lived in the Clemmons community for more than 50 years. She was a good neighbor and friend always willing to help those who needed her. She was a certified nursing assistant who loved taking care of people, and a member of the American Legion Post 435, Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by a son, Alvin Oliver, and a brother, Richard Davis.
Surviving are four sons, James T. Oliver Jr. and wife Barbara of Charlotte and Larry, Melvin and Michael Oliver, all of Clemmons; an adopted daughter, Cherrie Smith; four brothers, Tommy Davis and wife Laverne of Randallstown, Md., Ronald Davis and wife Shirley of San Diego, Calif., Eddie Davis and wife Floydean of Philadelphia, Pa., and Dewey Jones and wife Faye of Clemmons; a sister, Marion Davis of Winston-Salem; a brother-in-law, Thomas Oliver of Clemmons; a sister-in-law, Pauline Cloud of Winston-Salem; a loving cousin and best friend, Mae Francis King; special friends, Dorothy Britt and Betty Imes; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Alan Brown officiating.
Stella Mae Watson Kiger
Stella Mae Watson Kiger, 90, formerly of Kernersville, died April 25 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born September 19, 1912, in Forsyth County, a daughter of John and Josephine Pegram Watson. She was a member of Union Grove Baptist Church and a former member of the Sugar Sticks. She was preceded in death by her husband, Laurston Kiger.
Surviving are four daughters, Betty Vogler and husband Richard of Clemmons, Barbara Gauldin of Stokesdale, Billie Stack and husband Marion of Oak Ridge and Patricia Wails and husband Dave of Greensboro; a son, Lee Kiger and wife Jo Ann of Kernersville; a brother, Robah Watson of Kernersville; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Union Grove Baptist Church with Dr. Brooks Hunt and Rev. Neal Eller officiating, and burial followed in Eastlawn Gardens of Memory.
Grace Swaim Felts
Grace Swaim Felts, 77, of Elkin died April 30 at her residence. She was born October 1, 1925, in Yadkin County to Robert and Mammie Stroud Swaim. She retired after 39 years as branch manager of First Union, formerly known as Northwestern Bank. She was a member of Grassy Creek United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, a sister, Ethel Couch, preceded her in death.
Surviving are her husband, George Grady Felts of the home; a son, Steve Felts and wife Eva Jane of Lewisville; two sisters, Evelyn Dobbins and husband M.C. and Della Osborne, all of Jonesville; and three grandchildren, Drew Felts, Ashley Felts and Brittany Felts.
Funeral services were held at Grassy Creek United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Prichard officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Clinton Leroy Ellis
Clinton Leroy Ellis, 58, of Clemmons died April 28 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Davie County to Ira Clinton and Ivey Bowden Ellis. He attended Center Grove Baptist Church. He enjoyed bird watching, listening to oldies on the radio, watching television and caring for his two cats. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Surviving are a sister, Alice Faye Clontz and husband Brodis of Advance; a brother, Carroll Wayne Ellis and wife Georgia of Pilot Mountain; nieces and nephews, Sandra Johnson and husband Terry, Lisa Mears and husband Jeff, William Clontz Jr. and wife Dana and Ivey Gunter and husband Jon; three great-nieces; three great-nephews; and a devoted caregiver, Anna Holbrook.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel with Chaplain Rennie Adcock officiating, and burial followed at Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Thelma Badgett Whiteheart
Thelma Badgett Whiteheart, 89, of Winston-Salem died April 22. She was born January 8, 1914, in White Plains, Surry County, to Thomas J. and Lillian Venable Badgett. She successfully passed the North Carolina Nursing Examination in 1938 and was licensed as a registered nurse. Thereafter, she was employed by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., City Memorial Hospital and Forsyth Memorial Hospital, and did extensive private-duty nursing in Winston-Salem. She was a lifelong member of White Plains Friends Meeting and a devoted friend of Southside Baptist Church of Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Donald S. Whiteheart Sr.
Surviving are two sons, Donald S. Whiteheart Jr. and wife Susan of Lewisville and John D. Whiteheart and wife Marie of Shelby; three grandchildren, David E. Whiteheart and wife Cindy of Dallas, N.C., and Lisa R. Whiteheart and Grant E. Whiteheart, both of Durham; a sister, Alma Badgett Jackson of Mount Airy; and a brother, Tom Badgett and wife Carolyn of Walnut Cove.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. A graveside service followed, with entombment at Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum.
James Roy Wilhelm
James Roy Wilhelm, 100, of East Bend died April 24 at the Sticht Center at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born February 28, 1903, in Yadkin County to Philip Luther and Florence Allen Wilhelm. He farmed his entire life in addition to working at Dixie and Growers tobacco warehouses. He served Yadkin County as a deputy sheriff for 20 years. He was a member of East Bend Baptist Church. He was happily married to his wife, Mamie Perry Wilhelm, for 77 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Marler Wilhelm; his wife, Mamie Perry Wilhelm; and a son, Perry L. Wilhelm.
Surviving are two daughters, Lou Ray Etchison and husband Gray of Clemmons and Nell Dinkins and husband Athalee of East Bend; a son, Jim Wilhelm and wife Florence of Kernersville; a half-sister, Lucille Moir of Virginia Beach, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend with Rev. Jim Cohn officiating, and burial followed in the East Bend Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mark Edward Hepler
Mark Edward “Eddie” Hepler, 54, of Lewisville died May 1 at his home. He was born February 3, 1949, in Winston-Salem to Clarence Preston and Aileen Williams Hepler. He grew up in Augsburg Lutheran Church and was presently a member of Home Moravian Church. He loved gardening and was an avid fisherman and hunter.
Surviving are his wife, Beth Leinbach Hepler, and a daughter, Elizabeth Hepler, of the home; two sisters, Julia Jan Lowe of Winston-Salem and Elda Eileen Deal of Taylorsville; two brothers, Peter Wade Hepler and wife Blanca of Clemmons and Karl Kedron Hepler and wife Barbara Jean of Kernersville; a sister-in-law, Kathryn Leinbach Brown and husband Bruce of Winston-Salem; two brothers-in-law, Laurance Leinbach and wife Carla of Charlotte and Bobby Hawkins of Clemmons; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Home Moravian Church with Rev. C. Scott Venable officiating.
Harold Franklin Squires
Harold Franklin Squires, 84, of Eden died April 24 at Meadowbrook Manor Nursing Home in Clemmons. he was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He was a devout Christian and lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church, serving as a church lay leader, Sunday school teacher, choir member, and an administrative board member, chairman and trustee. He also served on the board of directors of the Draper YMCA and as vice president of the Eden YMCA. He was a Y’s Men member for over 50 years, serving as secretary, vice president and president, and honored as the “Man of the Year” in 1965. He was honored by the Y’s Men International Service Club in 1989. He was also an original member of the Fieldcrest Quartet for over 50 years and was a Draper Volunteer Fireman. He was preceded in death by his brother, Merrit Squires.
Surviving are his wife of over 64 years, Irene Moore Squires of the home; two daughters, Melba S. Warner of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Donna S. Chamblin of Lexington; three brothers, Dan Squires of Eden, Cecil Squires of Greensboro and Ervin Squires of Kingwood, Texas; a sister, Ruth S. Minter of Eden; four grandchildren, Angela Martin, Gregory Warner, Michele Citty and Cheryl Van Hook; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at First United Methodist Church of Draper in Eden, and burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
Mary Alesia Ward
Mary Alesia Ward, 40, of Clemmons died May 3.
Funeral services were held at Calvary Baptist Church in Sugar Grove.
Josephine Ruth Fenstermaker
Josephine “Jo” Ruth Fenstermaker, 81, of Winston-Salem died April 23. She was a daughter of Michael and Anna Butwin Mehok of Akron, Ohio. She was born Auguat 10, 1921, in Terra Haute, Ind. She was the wife of the late Paul W. Fenstermaker. She had resided at Brighton Gardens of Winston-Salem for the last 18 months. Before that, she lived for more than 50 years in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. She was preceded in death by sisters Anna Dillard, Helen Ott and Mary Mehok and brothers John Mehok and Steve Mehok.
Surviving are a son, Ken Fenstermaker and wife Joyce of Clemmons; a daughter, Paula Siglock and husband Carl of El Campo, Texas; grandchildren Amy Siglock of Oakland, Calif., Robert Siglock of El Campo, Texas, and Jason and Tonya Fenstermaker of Clemmons; and sisters Pauline Mehok of Akron, Ohio, and Margaret Dannemiller of Hudson, Fla.
A Mass of Christian burial was held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, and burial followed at Northlawn Memorial Gardens.
Dorothy Cook Durham
Dorothy Cook Durham, 72, of Germanton died April 28 at Forsyth Medical Center following a period of declining health. She was born December 17, 1930, in West Virginia, the daughter of the late Earl Glenn and Hattie Lusk Cook. She was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church in Winston-Salem and had retired from Sara Lee Hosiery with more than 35 years of service. She was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother, Edna Cook, Betty Shumate and Rodger Cook.
Surviving are her husband of 35 years, Bobby Ray Durham of the home; two daughters, Jody Lawrence and husband Don of Clemmons and Brenda Yokeley and husband Mac of Wallburg; three grandchildren, Craig Yokeley and wife Chastity of Georgia, Jason Yokeley and wife Pam of Arizona and Amanda Lawrence of Clemmons; two great-grandchildren, Cody and Cheyenne; and a half sister, Ruth West of Trap Hill.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall with Rev. David Harman and Rev. Michael Gates officiating, and burial followed at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall.
Elmer Clifton Hendrix
Elmer Clifton Hendrix, 79, of Advance died April 25 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born January 24, 1924, in Davie County to the late Ernest Clifton and Fannie Ellis Hendrix and was retired from Hanes Dye and Finish with 40 years of service. He was a lifelong member of Dulin United Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher for 54 years of the Men’s Adult Class, church treasurer for 52 years, lay leader, charter member of United Methodist Men and member of the church choir. He was a member and past Master of Advance Masonic Lodge 84, charter member and past president for three terms of Smith Grove Ruritan, held the Silver Beaver Award in Boy Scouting, and enjoyed gardening. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clyde Hendrix.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Burton Hendrix of the home; two sons, Phil Hendrix and wife Barbara of Lewisville and Dave Hendrix and wife Margie of Winston-Salem; two grandsons, Neal Hendrix and Mike Hendrix; a sister, Edith Lapish and husband Major; and a brother, Lester Hendrix and wife Betty, all of Mocksville.
Funeral services were held at Dulin United Methodist Church with Rev. David Smith, Dr. Robert McLawhorn and Rev. Ray O’Ferrell officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Lucille Hundley Conrad
Lucille Hundley Conrad, 75, of Clemmons died April 28 at her home. She was born April 27, 1928, in Forsyth County to Stella Mullican and Henry H. Hundley. She worked for Snyder Lumber Co., Coppedge and Talton Photography and Western Electric before becoming a homemaker. She was involved with the Forsyth Home Makers Association. She was a member of the Church of Christ and attended services at Boyer’s Chapel and Cottage Street. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank Eugene Conrad; and her brother, Henry L. Hundley.
Surviving are her son, Gary Conrad and wife Judy of Rock Hill, S.C.; a daughter, Judy Bailey and husband Ray of Centreville, Va.; a niece, Patricia Payseur of Greensboro; a nephew, William Hundley; a brother-in-law, Charles Clinton Conrad of Jacksonville, Fla.; four sisters-in-law, Ruth Barney of Eugene, Ore., Elizabeth Hobson of Chardon, Ohio, Leona Hundley of Winston-Salem and Lorene Hundley of Willis, Va.; cousins Nancy Parnell of Clemmons and Burton Boner and Doris Cumbo, both of Winston-Salem; many grand-nieces and cousins; and a special friend, Barbara Jarvis.
Funeral services were held at Boyer’s Chapel Church of Christ with James A. Percival officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
James David Frazier Jr.
James David Frazier Jr., 61, of Clemmons died July 14. He was born September 10, 1941, in High Point to James David Frazier Sr. and Bernice Davis Frazier. He worked many years as an accountant in Winston-Salem, most recently with Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center CareNet Division.
Surviving are his daughter, Lori Ann Meister and husband Greg of Wichita, Kan.; a son, Jonathan David Frazier, and wife Lynn of Charlotte; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Meister and Karlie, Lauren, and Jonathan David Frazier; and a sister, Rebecca Wright, of High Point.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Paul Mullen officiating, and burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons.
Katheryn Butner Kiger
Katheryn Butner Kiger, 75, of Bermuda Run died July 20 at Bermuda Village Nursing Center in Bermuda Run. She was born December 8, 1927, in Forsyth County to Willie Marcellus and Mary Stoltz Butner. She loved her children and stood up for them under any circumstance. She loved to sew and was a very accomplished seamstress. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, tatting and working in her flower gardens. She loved the mountains and loved to listen to country music. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Ray Kiger on October 20, 1992, and also a brother, Willie Lee Butner.
Surviving are a daughter, Kathy Marshall, and husband Johnny of Winston-Salem; three sons, Daryl Kiger and wife Donna of Pfafftown, Randy Kiger and wife Rose of Lexington and Reggie Kiger and wife Sheri of Bluefield, W.Va.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Hall with Rev. G. Thomas Shelton officiating, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Mildred Ketner Hutchens
Mildred Ketner Hutchens, 88, of Davidson County died July 19. She was born May 10, 1915, in Forsyth County to Nathaniel and Delia Brandon Ketner. She was a member of Ketners Church of Christ. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three children, Larry, Hilda and Terry; four brothers, Claude, William “Bill,” Odell and Herman; and a son-in-law, Jerry Bolden.
Surviving are her husband of 68 years, Fred Hutchens of the home; five daughters, Linda Bolden of King, Janet Rhoades and husband Mack of Winston-Salem, Jackie Driver of Lexington, Judy Loftin and husband Bobby of Lexington and Marlene Hester of Winston-Salem; two sons, Don Hutchens and wife Shirley of Winston-Salem and Eddie Hutchens and wife Sylvia of Pfafftown; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Glen Ketner; and two sisters, Frances Swaim and Verna Reed.
Funeral services were held at Boyers Chapel Church of Christ with Jerry Williams and Don Sloan officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Dickie Dale Caudle
Dickie Dale Caudle, 66, of Winston-Salem died July 14 after a brief illness. He was born in Surry County to Willie O. Caudle and Alice Wall Caudle on Oct. 11, 1936. His father preceded him in death.
Surviving are his mother, Alice Caudle, of Elkin; his wife, Geraldine “Gerri” Pardue Caudle; two daughters, Connie C. Yokeley and husband Robert G. Yokeley Jr. of Wallburg and Karla C. Kinney and husband Richard N. Kinney Jr. of Lewisville; three grandchildren, Rheannon Dale Yokeley of Asheville, Kellen Graye Yokeley of Raleigh and Richard Garrison Yokeley of Asheville; and three sisters, Rita C. Toivonen and husband Dennis and Kay C. Mansfield and husband Ray all of Winston-Salem and Sybrilla Caudle of Greensboro.
A memorial service was held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with Pastor Paul Conrad officiating.
William Ray Burge
William Ray “Bill” Burge, 79, of King died July 17. He was born August 28, 1923, in Stokes County to S.V. and Mary Etta Nunn Burge. He served with the U.S. Air Force during World War II, was former owner-operator of King Milling Co., and a member and past master of King Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Johnson Burge; a son, William Stephen Burge; two sisters, Dorothy Bowman and Virginia Covington; and a brother, Donald Burge.
Surviving are a daughter, Marcia Lynn Burge of the home; a daughter-in-law, Mary Turner Burge of King; two grandsons, Sean Burge of Winston-Salem and Todd Burge and wife Traci of Lewisville; a great-grandson, Hunter Burge of Lewisville; a sister, Rachel Kiser of King; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Mountain View Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Saul officiating, and burial with Masonic Rites followed in the church cemetery.
Michael William Link
Michael William Link, 48, of Clemmons died November 8 at home. He was born June 5, 1956, in Hillsborough, son of Doris C. Link and the late William G. Link. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Andrew C. Link.
Surviving are his wife, Joanne Loftin Link; a daughter, Megan L. Link; a son, Justin M. Link and special friend Stephanie Sharp, all of the home; his mother, Doris C. Link of Winston-Salem; a brother, Todd M. Link of Raleigh; three nephews, Hunter Link of Winston-Salem and Joshua and Nicholas Link of Raleigh; and lifelong friends Kenny McKeown, Mike Markland and David Sparks.
A celebration of life was held at Friedberg Moravian Church with Pastor Tom Shelton officiating. A graveside service wase held at Friedberg Moravian Church.
