Baird Brooks Sills
Baird Brooks Sills, 76, of Winston-Salem died July 1 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born April 8, 1928, in Forsyth County to Robert Williams and Oma Kluttz Sills. He was a lifelong member of Augsburg Lutheran Church and was retired from Southern National Bank as vice president. He was a former member of Twin City Lions Club and the Twin City Club and a current member of the Olympic Club. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, George K. Sills.
Surviving are his wife, Rosa Cheatwood Sills of the home; a son, Brooks Sills and wife Colleen of Lewisville; a daughter, Joyce Sills of Clemmons; a grandson, Baird Sills III; a brother, Robert Sills and wife Lucretia of Winston-Salem; a brother-in-law, Boyce Cheatwood and wife Rachel of North Wilkesboro; three nieces and a nephew; many faithful friends; and lifelong special friends, fraternity brothers, Robert Smitherman and Dan Hobson.
A memorial service was held at Augsburg Lutheran Church with Dr. Ronald Rinn, Pastor Shirley Harrison and Pastor Edwin Troutman officiating. Inurnment followed at the church.
Shirley Blanche Swain Russell
Shirley Blanche Swain Russell, 78, of Winston-Salem died July 3 at her home. She was born September 6, 1925, in Lynchburg, Va., to James Hunt and Elizabeth English Swain. She was retired from L. Roberts and Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, where she was a founding member.
Surviving are her husband, B. Dawson Russell of the home; three children, Sandy Simpson and husband Steve of Orlando, Fla., Vickie Lail and husband Donald of Advance and Benjamin D. “Tripp” Russell III and wife Kim of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Christie Couture and husband Mike, Robin Allan and husband D.J., Melanie Frazier and Brooke Barbour; extended family members, Kevin, Rhonda and Spencer Powell; a sister, June Clark of Lynchburg, Va.; and two brothers, Donald Swain of Lynchburg, Va., and J.D. Swain of Raleigh.
A funeral Mass was held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, and burial followed in Parklawn Memorial Park.
Opal Brewer Wilson
Opal Brewer Wilson, 91, of Clemmons died October 16 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born June 6, 1914, in Forsyth County to Bernie Dennis Brewer and Mollie Phelps Brewer. She owned and operated Wilson’s Florist in Clemmons for 40 years. She was a very active member of Centenary United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir, served as an MYF leader and Sunday school teacher and was a member of the Women’s Fellowship. She was the widow of George W. Wilson.
Surviving are her son, George E. Wilson and wife Eleanor “Jeep” Wilson of Advance; two granddaughters, Kerri Crater and husband Mark of Mocksville and Aurelia Lagle and husband Billy of Harmony; two great-grandchildren, Sadie and Trey Lagle; and a brother, Robert E. Brewer and wife Dorothy of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held at Centenary United Methodist Church with Rev. Randy Lucas and Rev. Greg Little officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Ruth B. Barney
Ruth B. Barney, 79, of Eugene, Ore., died October 11 of cancer. She was born February 17, 1926 in Lewisville to Eugene Moore Conrad and Ruby Sprinkle Conrad. She married Clifford Barney in 1964 in Las Vegas. A resident of Eugene since 1990, she had previously lived in Tustin, Ca. She had worked as a pharmaceutical supervisor at BioMed Laboratories. She loved researching the history of the South and her own genealogy. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Frank and Clinton Conrad; sisters, Mildred Cranfill and Elizabeth Hobson; and a half-sister, Blanche Alderman.
Surviving are her husband; a son, Robert Brasch of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and a granddaughter, Jessica.
No funeral services are planned. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of Sacred Heart.
Kathryn Leinbach Brown
Kathryn Leinbach Brown, 49, died October 14 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Boston, Mass., on May 17, 1956, to Dr. and Mrs. Laurence B. Leinbach. She was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. She was also a sustaining member of Winston-Salem Junior League. As an alumna and parent, she was very involved in all aspects of Forsyth Country Day School. She was an accomplished quilter whose work has been shown worldwide. She was a systems-analyst consultant, working primarily for the family businesses: Adele Knits, Twin City Warehouses and Data Chambers. She was preceded in death by her parents, Kathryn McNair Leinbach and Dr. Laurence Brickenstein Leinbach; sister Margaret Leinbach Hawkins; and brothers-in-law George Patrick Brown and Mark Edward Hepler.
Surviving are her husband, Bruce Tankard Brown of Winston-Salem; her children, George, Rebecca and Andrew, all of Winston-Salem; sister Beth Hepler of Lewisville; brother Laurence Leinbach and wife Carla of Charlotte; father-in law Henry Andrew Brown Jr., and mother-in law Patricia Tankard Brown of Winston-Salem; sister-in-law Adele Stotler and husband David of Long Beach, Calif.; brothers-in-law Andy Brown of Bermuda Run, Edward Brown and wife Victoria of Baltimore, Md., and Bobby Hawkins and wife Kathy of Clemmons; 12 nephews and nieces; and three great-nephews.
A memorial service was held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
German Ramos Martinez
German Ramos Martinez, 38, of Lewisville died October 8 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born May 27, 1967, in San Felipe, Guanajuanto, Mexico, to Juan and Carmen Ramos, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by a son, German Ramos.
Surviving are his wife, Amanda Fox; a son, German Caleb Ramos, 11; a daughter, Carmen Rebecca Ramos, 8, all of the home; and 12 siblings.
A graveside service was held at Parklawn Memorial Park with Rev. Enrique Alcantara officiating.
Daisy Swaim Bowman
Daisy Swaim Bowman, 102, died October 15 at Clemmons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born August 15, 1903, in Davidson County and lived most of her life as a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; a son, Edward Bowman; and a daughter, Carolyn Gillespie.
Surviving are her daughter, Frieda Bowman Pilcher and husband James of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Dennis Gillespie and wife Heidi of Pennsylvania, and Sandra Pierce and Barbara Hanes, both of Winston-Salem; six great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a son-in-law, Joseph Gillespie of Walnut Cove; a daughter-in-law, Lillian Bowman of Seaport, Maine; and two sisters-in-law, Lillian R. Bowman and Ethel Spainhour of Winston-Salem.
A graveside service was held at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
Ida Cornish Cashion
Ida “Fay” Cornish Cashion, 85, of Winston-Salem died October 11 at Clemmons Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Davidson County to James Hamilton and Lillian Phelps Cornish on December 21, 1919. She was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church. She retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 38 years of service. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Cletus and Howard Cornish; a sister, Elva Cornish Spaugh; two nieces, Mae Spaugh Phelps and Carolyn Spaugh Lynch; and a nephew, Ray Spaugh.
Surviving are a niece, Mary Lott and husband Brooks; a nephew, Carol Spaugh and wife Shelby of Clemmons; and a special great-niece, Brenda Howell of Clemmons.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park with Rev. Stacy Abernathy officiating.
Bobby Lester Pardue
Bobby Lester Pardue, 71, of Ronda died October 12 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin, after a battle with cancer. He was born November 18, 1933, in Wilkes County to the late Lester W. and Virgie Vanhoy Pardue. He married Patsy Sofley Pardue on July 19, 1953, and this past summer, they celebrated 51 years of marriage. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a retired rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Elkin and a member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church in Ronda. He was very active in his church and was also an avid craftsman of duck decoys and other woodworking projects.
Surviving are his wife, Patsy; and two children, Cody A. Pardue and wife Donna of Clemmons and Sherri Pardue McIntosh and husband Bill of Olympia, Wash.; two grandsons, Sean and Duncan Pardue of Clemmons; and a special aunt, Nellie Harris of Ronda.
A memorial service was held at Maple Springs United Methodist Church with Pastor Rex Cranfill officiating.
Sandra Louise Hayes
Sandra “Sandi” Louise Hayes, 18, of Pfafftown died October 15 at Wake Forest Brenner Children’s Hospital. She was born July 13, 1987. She fought her battle of cystic fibrosis with dignity and great pride. She loved camping, shopping, dancing and singing.
Surviving are her parents, Curtis and Sandra Hayes; grandmothers Wavie Whitaker and Mae Hayes; godmother Carolyn Fulp; several aunts and uncles, William Whitaker, Ernest and Louise Westmoreland, Wint and Myrtle Pardue, Jimmy and Rosa Moon, Betty Spicer, Danny and Judy Mendenhall, Grayland and Lois Sizemore and Thomas Hayes; and numerous cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held at Vogler Reynolda Road Chapel with Brother Ray Randall and Brother Tony Pardue officiating. Burial followed in Crestwood Memorial Gardens in State Road.
Dorothy Faye Pegram Jones
Dorothy Faye Pegram Jones, 80, of Lewisville died October 14 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Forsyth County on July 26, 1925, to John and Bessie Transou Pegram. She was a member of Warners Chapel Church of Christ. She retired from Lucia Corp. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Kenneth Jones Sr.; a brother, J.W. Pegram; a sister, Ethel Cook; and a grandson, Ray Peyton Jones.
Surviving are a son, Ray Jones Jr. and wife Carol of Mocksville; a daughter, Alice Tysinger and husband Larry of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Kevin Tysinger, Jeff Jones, Teri Tysinger and Jennifer Whitley and husband Josh; eight great-grandchildren, Hunter Tysinger, Makayla Tysinger, Peyton, Patterson and Presley Jones and Isaiah, Jared and Nathan Whitley; two brothers, Leo Pegram and wife Marie and Billy Pegram; four sisters, Wanda Redding and husband Arthur, Hattie Mae Hire, Johnsie Moser and Willie Kinney; and a sister-in-law, Dot Pegram, all of Lewisville.
A graveside service was held at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, with Paul Kirkpatrick, minister, officiating.
Robert Edward Brewer
Robert Edward Brewer, 88, of Clemmons died December 6 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born December 4, 1917, in Forsyth County to Bernie and Mollie Phelps Brewer. He retired from Luwa Bahnson after 30 years of service. He was a member and a deacon at Fraternity Church of the Brethren, and he had a great love for his family, fishing and water activities. His parents and a sister, Opal Brewer Wilson, preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Dorothy R. Brewer of the home; a son, Bill Brewer and wife Sandra of Hayes, Va.; a daughter, Betty B. Bright and husband Norman of Brentwood, Tenn; six grandchildren, Mike Brewer and wife Laura, Kelli Sabiston and husband Paul, Peter and Kori Brewer, Gretchen Cantrell and husband Mike, and Jonathan Bright and wife Stacey; and six great-grandchildren, Michael Brewer, Griffin Cantrell, Natalie and Eric Sabiston and Jason and Emily Waters.
Funeral services were held at Fraternity Church of the Brethren with Pastor Dave Kindy officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Bettie Hutchens Hodges
Bettie Hutchens Hodges, 76, of Clemmons died December 11 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born on December 7, 1929, in Surry County to Isaac and Lucy Fleming Hutchens. She was a member of Arcadia United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She served as president of the Sharing and Caring Club, a member of the Extension Homemakers, County Council president and also was a life member. She was also a member of the Arcadia Garden Club and volunteered with Meals-on-Wheels.
Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Robert Samuel Hodges; two sons, Steve Hodges and wife Becky of Lexington and David Hodges of Arcadia; daughter-in-law Lisa Hodges; four grandchildren, Keri Freedle and husband Chris and Brent, Drew and Eric Hodges; a great-granddaughter, Dylan Freedle; and a special nephew, Junior Hutchens.
Funeral services were held at Arcadia United Methodist Church with Rev. Alvin Pope and Rev. Patrick Marion officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Jessie W. Harper
Jessie W. “Nub” or “Shorty” Harper, 78, of Mocksville, died December 8. He was born May 1, 1927, in Clemmons to Lewis and Beulah Longworth Harper. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He retired from the N.C. State Highway Department of Forsyth County after 27 1/2 years of service. He was also a well-known bluegrass banjo picker. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; a son, Danny L. Harper; and brother Sanford “Bud” Harper.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Irene Dotson Harper; a daughter, Vicky Luper and husband Ray of Clemmons; a brother, Donald Harper and wife Doret of Falkville, Ala.; six granddaughters, Terri Perkins and husband Loran, Angie Harsey and husband Alan, Cindy Luper of Clemmons, Mellisa Harper of Winston-Salem, Misty Mayo and husband Chris of Jolten, Tenn., and Alicia Chow and husband Dean of Las Cruzes, N.M.; a grandson, Donald Harper and wife Connie of Chelsea, Mich.; two great-granddaughters, Taylor Perkins and Hannah Harsey of Clemmons; seven great-grandsons, Brandon Perkins and wife Lacy Lipps of Huntsville, Jessie, Austin and Owen Perkins of Clemmons, Noah and Harrison May of Tennessee and Donald J. Harper Jr. of Chelsea; a great-grandchild, Lorali Gracie; three sisters, Ellon Howard and husband Johnny, Betty Harper of Mocksville and Linda Speaks and husband Wayne of Winston-Salem; a close nephew, Jamie Harper of Mocksville; several brothers and sisters-in-law; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel with Rev. Ronnie Craddock officiating.
Mary Jane Conrad
Mary Jane Conrad, 95, of Salemtowne, the Moravian retirement community, died December 5 at her home. She was born March 1, 1910, in Winston-Salem to William Walter Conrad and Nora Partridge Conrad. She spent all of her life in Forsyth County and was educated in the public school system. She was a lifelong member of Olivet Moravian Church.
Surviving are her sisters, Margaret C. McGee of Clemmons and Nora Lee C. Tomlin of New Orleans, La., along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held at Olivet Moravian Church, with Rev. Doug Rights officiating. Burial followed in the church graveyard.
Roger Lee Davis
Roger Lee Davis, 63, of Pfafftown died December 10 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Galax, Va., on September 9, 1942, to the late Dave Davis and Grace Hancock Davis. He was a retired landscaper and of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are a son, Michael Davis; two daughters, Ashley Davis and Jeanette Davis; five brothers, Billy Davis, Frank Davis, Roy Davis, Junior Davis and Danny Davis; two sisters, Mary Griffin and Jane Puckett; and several nieces and nephews.
Jimmie Ray Lane Sr.
Jimmie Ray Lane Sr., 72, of Pinnacle died December 7 at his home. He was born November 7, 1933, in Stokes County to the late Buford Ray and Rillar Collins Lane. He was self-employed in the grocery wholesale business and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Surviving are his wife, Gaye Sink Lane of the home; his sons, Jimmie Ray Lane Jr. and wife Angie of Winston-Salem and Stephen Lane of Kernersville; his stepdaughter, Debra Everidge of Thomasville; his stepson, Jackie Everidge of Clemmons; five grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Quesinberry.
A memorial service was heldat Hebron United Church of Christ in Midway with Rev. Raymond Craven officiating.
Arthur Buxton Hutchins
Arthur Buxton Hutchins, 86, of State Road died December 8 at his residence. He was born March 14, 1919, in Surry County to Calvin Byrd and Ella Mitchell Hutchins. He was retired from the Department of Agriculture Weights and Measures division and was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Arthur was a member of Elkin Masonic Lodge 454, formerly served as the Master Mason and Lodge Chaplain and was a member of the Shrine. He was a Charter Member of the Elkin Rescue Squad and served as Area 8 director for many years. He played an instrumental role in achieving a retirement fund for members of Elkin Rescue Squad. He also was a past member of Elkin Lions Club and served as commissioner of Jonesville for several years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Floyd Allen Hutchins; and two sisters, Daisy Hutchins Crouse and Ollie “Bun” Kunce.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Gardner Hutchins of the home; a son, Arthur Allen Hutchins and wife Kathleen of Maryland; a daughter, Lucy Hutchins Vestal and husband Jerry Lee of Clemmons; five grandchildren, Christopher Vestal, David Vestal, Ryan Lee Hutchins, Cheryl Telenko and Jeffrey Hutchins; and four great-grandchildren, Matthew, Alex, Kaitlyn and Kenneth.
Funeral services were held at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church with Rev. John Attaway and Rev. Milton Sewell officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
R. Alton Vestal
R. Alton “Banny” Vestal, 87, of Jonesville died December 10 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. He was born June 1, 1918, in Yadkin County to the late Harrison and Charity Pinnix Vestal. He was retired with 43 years of service from Chatham Manufacturing and was a faithful member of Swan Creek Baptist Church for 56 years. Along with six of his brothers, he was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Gary Vestal; a daughter, Gay V. Carroll; and six brothers, Worth Vestal, Harvey Vestal, Vertle Vestal, Bob Vestal, Coy Vestal and Fred Vestal.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Edith H. Vestal of the home; a daughter, Shelby Parham and husband Alvin of Clemmons; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a very special friend to the family, Shirley Maynard; a sister, Pansy Nations and husband James of Jonesville; a brother, Elmer Vestal of Siloam; and a sister-in-law, Louise Vestal of Jonesville.
Funeral services were held at Swan Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Nat Thompson officiating. Burial followed in the church Cemetery, with full military honors by Yadkin VFW Post 10346.
Joanne Long Southern
Joanne Long Southern, 73, of East Bend died December 10 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Forsyth County on April 27, 1932, to the late Thomas R. Long and Maggie Stout Long. She was retired from Jepson Burns and was a member of Mizpah Moravian Church.
Surviving are her husband, George Southern of the home; three daughters, Lynn Angell and husband Eddie of East Bend; Mary Shore of East Bend and Georgie Holden and husband Harvey of Yanceyville; a brother, Bobby Long and wife Eula of Tobaccoville; two sisters, Jane Matthews of East Bend and Margaret Rominger of Clemmons; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Long of Yadkinville and Wilma Hunter of Pfafftown; three grandsons, David Hester and wife Shona of Walkertown, Davis Angell and wife Vickie of East Bend and Tommy Hester of Yanceyville; two granddaughters, Regina Allen and husband Jason of Yanceyville and Danielle Berry and husband David of Yanceyville; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Mizpah Moravian Church with Rev. John Boling officiating. The Burial followed in the church cemetery.
