Ms. Regina Ann Erwin

Ms. Regina Ann Erwin, 58, of Old Highway 18, died Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at Mission Saint Joseph Hospital in Asheville. Born February 7, 1945 in Burke County she was the daughter of the late Will Pearson Erwin and Frances Jamison Erwin.

She is survived by: daughter Caroline Epley of Morganton; sisters Janice Erwin Williams of Winston Salem, Susan Erwin Snipes and husband Ben., Beth Erwin of Virginia Beech, Virginia; grandchildren Emily Connelly, Dustin Epley and Cody Epley.

Funeral services will be 12 noon Friday, January 2, 2004 at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton with the Reverend Susan Rice officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 11 till 12 Friday at Kirksey Funeral in Morganton.

Memorials in Ms. Erwin memory may be made to Hospice of Burke County, P.O. 1029, Valdese NC 28690.

Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton is assisting the Erwin family with arrangements.

Mrs. Linda Wilson Bartlett

Mrs. Linda Wilson Bartlett, 77, of Marion died, Friday, May 7, 2004, at The McDowell Hospital.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00AM, Monday, May 10, 2004, in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion. Interment will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery, Marion. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the Funeral Home.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Sue Eva Marie Haupt

Sue Eva Marie Haupt, age 53, of 572 Ebenezer Rd., Old Fort, NC, died Wednesday, March 9, 2005 in Carolina Specialty Hospital, Charlotte, NC.

Born in Hoke County, NC to the late George and Kathleen Stewart Hammack, she was a former employee of Jaynesville Products.

Surviving Mrs. Haupt are her husband, Ralph Haupt; two sons, Michael Cribb of Lowery, SC and Allen Cribb of Smyrna, SC; one brother, Benny Hammack of Smyrna, SC; three sisters, Vera Kohls of Old Fort,NC; Helen Robinette, of Raeford,NC, Kaye Chmelik of Fort Leonardwood, Missouri; three granddaughters, Shelby Cribb, Lexie Cribb and Josie Cribb.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 at the Old Fort Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home. A private ceremony for the family only will be held 2:00 o’clock Sunday, March 13, 2005 in the chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Old Fort, NC.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Old Fort.

Mrs. Josie Mae Pritchard Cox

Mrs. Josie Mae Pritchard Cox of Morganton, died Sunday, July 25, 2005 at Grace Hospital. She was born April 18, 1919 in Burke County and was daughter of the late William Pritchard and Naomi Smith Pritchard.

Mrs. Cox was a long time member of North Morganton United Methodist Church and was retired from Burke Yarns and Western Carolina Center.

She was a lady who dearly loved her family and was actively involved with all their special events. She enjoyed her independence and meeting friends for meals and outings when she was able. She lived a full life with her husband, family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Zennie H. Cox, three brothers, L.C., Earl and Preston Pritchard; four sisters, Maude Goins, Bonnie Stamey, Gertrude Kiser and Ruth Rabb.

She is survived by her son, Gerald Cox and his wife Meilia, of Rocky Mount, NC; grandchildren, Kevin Cox and wife Kara, of Rocky Mount; Gina Cox Holland and husband, Darrell, of Rocky Mount; Heather Cox Nicholson and husband Jeff of Fredricksburg, Va; Crystal Cox Peebles and husband, Harrison of Wilmington, NC; great grandsons, Kyle Holland, Davon Peebles and Jaxen Nicholson; great granddaughters, Katiebeth Holland, Gracie Cox, Josie Nicholson and Maryedith Cox.

Funeral services will be11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 27th at North Morganton United Methodist Church with Reverend Tony Matthews presiding, Entombment will follow the service at Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday one hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made in her loving memory to North Morganton United Methodist Church, 990 Sanford Drive, Morganton, NC 28655.

Services are under the direction of Kirksey Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Morganton, NC.

Mr. Ada “Adie” Harlan Biddix

Mr. Ada “Adie” Harlan Biddix, 93, of North Cove, went to be with the Lord, Friday, March 5, 2004, at his residence.

Born January 29, 1911, in McDowell County, he was a son of the late Andy Biddix and Lena Lowery Biddix. In addition to his parents, Mr. Biddix was also preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Mollie Ann Mace Biddix, a brother, Pat Biddix and a sister, Maggie Stamey.

He was a member of the Peppers Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Biddix was a Veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a landscaper with the N.C. Hwy. Dept..

Mr. Biddix is survived by four sons, Daniel Biddix, and wife, Pat, of Marion, Adam Biddix, and wife, Cathy, Ted Biddix, and wife, Debbie, and Grant Biddix, and wife, Thelma, all of North Cove; two daughters, Betty Anderson, and husband, Ray, of North Cove, and Francis King, and husband, Joe, of Morganton; one brother, Dallas Biddix, and wife, Ida Mae, of Marion; a sister, Devada McKinney, of Marion; fourteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive Mr. Biddix.

Funeral Services for Mr. Biddix will be held 2:00PM, Sunday, March 7, 2004, at the Peppers Creek Baptist Church with the Reverends Lee Cook and Gary Greene officiating. Interment will follow at the Biddix Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 6:00PM-8:00PM, Saturday, March 6, 2004, at the Peppers Creek Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made in memory of Mr. Biddix to Hospice of McDowell County, 218 Logan St., Marion, NC 28752.

Mr. Billy Harold Owensby

Mr. Billy Harold Owensby, 58, of Marion, died, Monday, July 26, 2004, at Mountain Area Hospice Solace Place, Asheville.

Born June 2, 1946, in McDowell County, he was a son of the late William Ray Owensby and Margie O’Dear Owensby.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn B. Owensby, of the home; two sons, Dwayne Owensby and wife, Rachael, and Jeff Honeycutt and wife, Heather, all of Marion; a daughter, Tammy McCarthy and husband, John, of Jacksonville, FL; three step-daughters, Ginger Aldridge and husband, Andy, of Charlotte, NC, Kay Owensby, of Marion, and Judy Bradley and husband, Eric, of Marion; two brothers, Ken Owensby, Sr. and wife, Lucille and Dean Owensby and wife, Leona, all of Marion; four sisters, Shelby Hollifield and husband, Earl, Judy Holland, Sue Hicks and husband, Bobby, all of Marion, and Sandra Mathis, of Morganton; he is also survived by 10 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mr. Owensby will be held 2:00PM, Wednesday, July 28, 2004, in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion, with the Reverends Ray Stockton, Robbie Waddell and Harry Nix officiating. Interment will follow at the McDowell Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 12:00 PM-2:00PM, prior to the Services at the Funeral Home.

James Henry Williams, Sr.

On January 18, 2005, after an extended illness and having fought a good race in this life, 89 years young, James Henry Williams, Sr., was called home by our precious Lord to receive his reward. On that day he was surrounded in a circle of love at home with his family.

He was born on July 7, 1915, in McDowell County to the late Samuel Williams and Julia Johnson Williams. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, two brothers, and one beloved son, James Henry Williams, Jr.; all of them there to receive him home.

Mr. Williams was a member of Addies Chapel United Methodist Church, an avid lover of the gospel, and a former member of the singing group, “Marion Jubilee Quartet”. He was retired from Marion Manufacturing Company and Drexel Heritage.

Mr. Williams is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Lillian Williams; four daughters, Julia Mae Whitesides, Mary Elizabeth Bell, both of the home, Sarah Ann Lowe and her husband William, of Fayetteville, NC, Ernestine Martin and her husband Nick, of Winston-Salem, NC; and one brother, Daniel Williams, of Marion. He is also survived by eight beloved grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one play daughter, several dearly loved nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of McDowell County, 218 Logan Street, Marion, NC 28752, or Addies Chapel United Methodist Church, PO Box 914, Marion, NC 28752.

Funeral Services for Mr. Williams will be held 2:00PM, Saturday, January 22, 2005, at Addies Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Reverend Dale Sneed officiating. Interment will follow at the McDowell Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the Services at the church.

Ervin Martin Thomas

Ervin Martin Thomas, age 79 of Marion, died, August 6, 2003 in Yancey County. Born in Mitchell County to the late Ransom Thomas and Mae Young Thomas, he was a retired Dietician with the VA Hospital in Asheville and lived here his entire life.

He is survived by his wife, Iva Ruby Thomas, of Marion.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one step-son, Kenny Smith, of Marion; a daughter, Gloria Burleson and her husband Gerald of Micaville; one step-daughter, Kathy Jenkins, of Marion; six grandchildren, Tim Burleson of Micaville, Chris Jenkins, Rusty Jenkins, Paul Smith, Matthew Smith, and Kayla Smith, all of Marion; and six great- grandchildren, Josh Burleson, Jake Burleson, Jessica Burleson, Julie Burleson, all of Micaville, and Druw Jenkins and Baylee Jenkins, of Marion.

Services will be held on Saturday, August 9, at Going Home Free Will Baptist Church at 1 PM with the Rev. Jeff Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in Zion Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 8, from 6-8 PM at Kirksey Funeral Home- Marion.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Walter Lee Lawing

Walter Lee Lawing, age 90, of 169 Byrd Hill Rd., Marion, died Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at his residence.

Born in Rutherford County to the late Charlie and Eva Watkins Lawing, he was a self-employed businessman and a member of New Horizon Baptist Fellowship. He was very musically active and was a member of the “Young Set” He participated in several M.A.C.A. productions and also received numerous medals in the Senior Games of McDowell County.

Surviving are his wife, Willie Mae Lawing of the home; one son, Jack Lawing of Atlanta, Ga.; one sister, Mary Lawing Boyd of Marion; two grandchildren, Ingrid Lawing Cornetta of West Newton, Mass. And Michael H. Lawing of Nashville, Tn.; three great grandchildren.

Services will be held 11:00 o’clock Saturday, January 3, 2004 at New Horizon Baptist Fellowship. Rev. Phil Murdock will officiate with burial following in McDowell Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 at Kirksey Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Horizons Baptist Fellowship – P.O. Box 99 – Marion, N.C. 28752.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Mr. Vernon Emmitt Whitson

Mr. Vernon Emmitt Whitson, 59, of Mooresville, died, Thursday, May 20, 2004, at the Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, Mooresville, NC. Born December 28, 1944, in McDowell County, he was the son of the late E.W. Whitson and Bertha Melton Whitson. Mr. Whitson was a member of the Welcome In Christian Ministries, Statesville. He loved Gospel music and played the electric bass and the drobro during Church services.

Mr. Whitson is survived by four brothers, Floyd Whitson, of Hudson, NC, Charlie and Earl Whitson, both of Old Fort, NC and J.L. Whitson, of Black Mountain, NC;

A companion, Shirley Drum, of Mooresville, NC.

Funeral Services will be held graveside, 2:00PM, Sunday, May 23, 2004, at the Green Knob Cemetery, Old Fort, with the Reverend Bruce Byrd officiating.

Floral Tributes will be accepted; those who desire to make memorials in Mr. Whitsons’ memory may do so to the American Heart Association, Region 1, 50 S. French Broad Ave., Asheville, NC 28801.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.
