Zane Gray Reid
Zane Grey Reid, 71, of Kernersville, died April at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born May 8, 1932, a son of the late Basil Ezera and Ella Richardson Reid. He was a member of Kernersville Wesleyan Church and a retired mechanic from Hubbard Transmission & Auto Repair Service. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rhonda Reid.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Reid of the home; a daughter, Sharon Reid of Clemmons; two sons, Michael and wife Teresa of West Virginia and Shane and wife Jenny of North Carolina; two stepsons, Tim Hubbard and wife Kay and Dale Hubbard, all of Kernersville; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Kernersville Wesleyan Church with Pastor Phil Hulen officiating, and burial followed in Mount Gur Cemetery.
Luther Colson Giles Jr.
Luther Colson Giles Jr., 70, of Pfafftown died at his residence on April 7. He was born in Dry Fork, Va., on January 7, 1934, to Luther Colson Giles Sr. and Irma Elliott Giles. He was in the commercial construction business and was a creative craftsman in wrought-iron works. He was a member of the VFW and served in the U.S. Navy in the Korean War. He was preceded in deatg by his wife, Dolores Clement Giles, and his father, Luther Colson Giles Sr.
Surviving are his mother, Irma Elliott Giles; his children, Tony S. Giles, Teri Sweet, Karen Patterson, Sharon Harrison, Christine Doub and Marty Daymude; and his grandchildren, Tracy Ward, Jessica Giles, Katie Sweet, Evan Doub, Lauren Harrison, T.J. Harrison, Mica Giles and Michael Patterson.
A graveside service was held at Doubs Chapel United Methodist Church.
Bobby Wayne Carroll
Bobby Wayne Carroll, 73, of Winston-Salem died April 9 and was reunited with his wife, Mildred, who preceded him in death on December 12, 2003. He was born October 4, 1930, in Suffolk, Va., to Claudie J. and Annie Bradshaw Carroll. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean conflict. He retired from Calvary Baptist Church after 30 years of service in numerous capacities. He was an avid trombone player. He played in the 769th Air Force Band, the Sawtooth Swing Band and the Calvary Baptist Church Orchestra. A confirmed bachelor at 38, he fell in love with and married Mildred Crews and became a devoted dad to her seven children.
Surviving are two daughters, Peggy Holmes and husband Stephen of Winston-Salem and Cindy Loftin and husband Warren of Lewisville; and five sons, David Crews and wife Vickie of Advance, Danny Crews and wife Lillie of Virginia Beach, Va., Mark Crews and wife Kathy of Port Orange, Fla., Robert Crews and wife Debbie of Melbourne, Fla., and Derek Crews and wife Trish of Pottsboro, Texas; 19 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Calvary Baptist Church, with Dr. Mark Corts, Dr. Gary Chapman and Dr. Guy Hipp officiating. Burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
Jimmie Sanford Caudle
Jimmie Sanford Caudle, 69, of Pfafftown died April 8 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born October 19, 1934, in Forsyth County, a son of Thomas O. Caudle and Lola Williams Caudle. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
Surviving are a special friend, Mary Devers of Pfafftown; three sisters, Billie Crater of Winston Salem, Nancy Harrell and husband Lester of Charlotte and Judy Michaels and husband Roger of Clover, S.C.; a brother, Michael Caudle and wife Eula of Temple, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held in J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home Wallburg Chapel with Jerry Williams officiating, and burial followed in Waughtown Cemetery.
Don A. Cole
Don A. Cole, 64, of Winston-Salem died April 9 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born January 2, 1940, in Forsyth County to Hubert Glenn and Thelma Sheppard Cole. He worked 10 years for R.J. Reynolds and retired from Forsyth County EMS after 21 years of service. He also volunteered with the Forsyth County Rescue Squad, helped organize the Forest Hills Rescue Squad and was a longtime member of the Gold Wings Road Riders Association. He attended First Church of the Brethren in Mount Airy. He was preceded in death by his father.
Surviving are his wife, Carol Mabes Cole of the home; his mother of Winston-Salem; two sons, Alton Cole and wife Diana of Germanton and Carlton Cole and wife Tina of Winston-Salem; four granddaughters, Danielle, Brittany, Morgan and Christin; a grandson, C.J; and two brothers, Max Cole and wife Kay of Wallburg and Wallace Cole and wife Marty of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held at First Church of the Nazarene with Pastors Wallace Cole and Glenn Messer officiating, and burial followed in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown.
Marjorie Hennings Green
Marjorie Hennings Green, 79, of Mocksville died April 10 at Davie County Hospital. She was born March 7, 1925, in Yadkin County to the late William Joseph and Ina Norman Hennings. She was a member of Jericho Church of Christ and was very active with Davie County Senior Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, John S. “Jay” Green, who died October 13, 1988; and a brother, Hoover Hennings.
Surviving are two sons, Tony S. Green and wife Barbara and Mike Green and wife Debbie, both of Mocksville; a brother, Clarence Hennings of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Paula Orrell and husband Jonathan, Jason Green, April Staley and husband Bobby and Tara Brewer and husband Chad; five great-grandchildren, Hannah and Colton Orrell, Allison and Jill Staley and Charles Brewer; and a stepgreat-grandchild, Kayla Brewer.
Funeral services were held at Welch Funeral Home with Dr. Tom Torpy officiating, and burial followed at Jericho Church of Christ cemetery.
Mettie Dixon Stender
Mettie Dixon Stender, 94, of Walkertown died April 11 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Alleghany County to the late Charles M. and Etta Finney Dixon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence R. Stender; a daughter, Sherrill S. Thomason; a son-in-law, Charles H. Thomason; and nine siblings.
Surviving are a daughter, Karen S. Huffman and husband William of Lewisville.
A graveside service was held at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown.
Mildred Crosier Overfelt
Mildred Crosier Overfelt, 84, of Roanoke, Va. died April 8. She was the widow of Eldridge Herman Overfelt and was retired from Crobucks and CVS Drug Store.
Surviving are a son, Gary Overfelt and wife Linda of Pfafftown; her granddaughters, Kimberly Doria and Mario Doria; her great-grandchildren, Taylor Doria and Dylan Doria, all of Naples, Fla.; and her great-nieces, Debbie Sallee and Chris Sallee of Dallas, Texas, Ann Evory and Rev. Dan Evory of Stockport, Ohio, Detra and Gary Shinn of Roanoke, and Tommy and Denise Crosier.
A cryptside service was held with Rev. Harold Moyer officiating.
Pearl Elizabeth Gough Swink
Pearl Elizabeth Gough Swink, 94, of Rural Hall died April 8 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home following a period of declining health. She was born March 6, 1910, in Yadkin County, the daughter of Calvin and Martha Ellen Chamberlain Gough. She was a charter member of Bethany Baptist Church in Winston-Salem and was a faithful nursery worker for a number of years. She loved to quilt and was an avid gardener who enjoyed working in her flowers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis M. Swink Sr., in 1990; and by two daughters, Janet Sue Swink in 1972, and Wanda Edwards in 1983. She was also preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers.
Surviving are two daughters, Peggy S. Holt of Winston-Salem and Linda S. Shortt of Pfafftown; a son, Francis M. Swink Jr. and wife Mildred of Fries, Va.; 10 grandchildren, Tonia Snow, Sharon Long, Terry Swink, Craig Swink, Rhonda Jones, Lisa Horton, Kelly Holt, Sandye Williamson, Robin Doss and Billy Edwards; four stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Thelma Simmons of Yadkinville.
Funeral services were held at Bethany Baptist Church with Rev. Don Harvey officiating, and burial followed in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall.
Paul E. Darden Jr.
Paul E. Darden Jr., 68, of Clemmons died suddenly July 17 after years of living above his heart-disease limitations. He was born December 10, 1935, the youngest of five children of Paul and Mary Darden. He grew up in Siler City. After serving in the U.S. Army, he graduated from East Carolina University. For 30 years, he taught high-school English. Most of his career was at West Forsyth High School in Clemmons, where he announced the football games for many years and was the golf coach. He was an avid gardener and golfer who worked part time at Tanglewood as a ranger. He was an active member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church for 40 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters Esther, Louise and Ruth.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Jean Lambert Darden; his daughter, Kim Shaver and husband Rev. Chan Shaver; his grandchildren, Paul and Ashley Shaver; his sister, Polly Moody, and brothers in-law Ben Moody and Bill Watkins; and several special nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Pine Grove United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem with Rev. Sylvia Wilhelm and Rev. Bob Huffman officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Vallie M. Arnold
Vallie M. Arnold, 92, of Winston-Salem died June 18 at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons. She was born June 14, 1912, in Yadkin County to Samuel Houston and Carrie Woods Mason. She was a charter member of Pleasant View Baptist, where she taught Sunday school for a number of years, the latest being the Loyal Workers Women’s Class, and was a member of the church choir. She was a homemaker and seamstress. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Glenn Arnold, in 1983.
Surviving are two sons, Harold R. Arnold and wife Wanda of Winston-Salem and Reuben D. Arnold and wife Barbara of Lewisville; three grandchildren, Larry Arnold of Winston-Salem, Kandi Hauser and husband Steve of Mooresville, and Sabrienna Edwards and husband Steve of Roaring Gap; and four great-grandchildren, Elise, Maghan, Gregory and Ashley.
Funeral services were held at Pleasant View Baptist Church, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Vivian Hooven Morrison Webb
Vivian Hooven Morrison Webb, 41, of Clemmons died July 17 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born October 4, 1962, in Galax, Va., to Elmer Junior and Janet Felts Hooven. She was owner of Face Masters Day Spa and president and owner of the North Carolina Estheticism Association. She was a member of Reynolda Presbyterian Church and leader of an Intercessory prayer team. She served in the U.S. Army. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Guy C. and Burter Ayers Felts and Emory and Freida Hooven.
Surviving are her husband, Lucius Webb; two children, Michael Graham Morrison and Michele Hollin Morrison and their dad, Mike Morrison; her parents; a sister, Beverly Hooven; two brothers, Christopher Hooven, Charles Hooven and wife Wendy; her stepfather, Ray Wagner; three stepbrothers, Keith Wagner, Terry Wagner and Brett Wagner; a stepsister, Dee Gibbs.
Funeral services were held at Blaise Baptist Church in Mocksville with Rev. Jim Glasgow and Rev. Ken Furches officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Raymond Lee Frye
Raymond Lee Frye, 73, of Clemmons died July 19 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born July 1, 1931, in Forsyth County to Gertie Plowman Frye and John Hensdale. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and had retired from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dora Simmons.
Surviving are his wife, Ella Hensley Frye; two daughters, Beverly F. Carter and husband Joe and Pamela F. Blanc and husband James, all of King; a son, Stephen Frye and wife Deana of Clemmons; three grandchildren, Stephanie Martin, Naomi Carter and Danielle Frye; a great-grandson, Matthew; and three sisters, Helen Spainhour, Mary Beeker and Josie Asbelle.
Funeral services were held in Immanuel Baptist Church with Pastor L.C. Taylor officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Charles Alfred Beaver
Charles Alfred Beaver, 87, of Winston-Salem died July 17 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born May 7, 1917, in Forsyth County to Curtis Paul and Faith Childress Beaver. He attended Marshall Baptist Church and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 20 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II.
Surviving are five sons, Don Lucas and wife Donna of Boone, Bob Beaver and wife Joy of Kernersville, David Beaver and wife Joy of Lewisville, Mickey Beaver of Winston-Salem and Jeff Beaver of Pinnacle; two daughters, Rosalie Peters and husband Billy of Roanoke, Va., and Annette Nelson and husband Gary of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Gene Beaver of Albuquerque, N.M., and Daniel Beaver of Winston-Salem; a sister, Daphine Sams of Winston-Salem; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and a special friend, Clerissia Moran of Winston-Salem.
A graveside service was held at Woodland Cemetery with Rev. Jim Wright officiating.
Ruby L. Long
Ruby L. Long, 91, of Pfafftown died July 18 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born July 20, 1913, in Forsyth County to William A. and Kate Davis Long. She was a lifelong member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard Blaine Long; three sisters, Mabel Spainhour, Evelyn Spainhour and Margaret Long; and a brother, T.D. Long.
Surviving are her daughter, Cherry L. Howell and husband Jimmy of Millers Creek; two grandsons, Jeremy Howell and wife Becky of Pfafftown and Josh Howell and wife Ellen of Houston, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Abby Howell; three sisters, Helen Wall of Kernersville, Mozelle Elmore of Yadkinville and Frances Higgins of Pfafftown; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. Dick Patzfahl and Rev. Dwight Cartner officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Helen Lea Anderson
Helen Lea Anderson, 20, of Linwood died suddenly July 18. She was born January 12, 1984, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Nels Leland Anderson Jr. and Cora Sue Frazier. She was employed as a shift leader at Taco Bell in Winston-Salem. She received a second chance at life with a heart transplant at age 7, May 25, 1991, at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich. She attended press conferences in Michigan in support of organ donations and was a member of Team Michigan of the U.S. Transplant Games. She received two Bronze Medals in the 1996 Transplant Olympics and was a member of the Kardiac Kids, the Transplant Action Council for Organ Donation and the Disabled American Veterans.
Surviving are her mother and stepfather, Cora Sue Frazier and Jimmie Dale Frazier Jr. of Clemmons; her father, Nels Leland Anderson Jr. of Meridian, Idaho; a son, Austin Jordan Alex Anderson of the home; a brother, Jimmie Dale Frazier III of Clemmons; her sisters, Latoshia Faith Christopher Stoddard and husband Christopher of Florida, Francine Trieste Anderson of Idaho and Brooklyn Renee Frazier of Clemmons; her grandparents, Nels and Lowene Anderson of Idaho, Jimmie Dale Frazier Jr. of Oregon and Delpha Frazier of Arizona; her nephews, Noah Michael Frazier, Christopher and Michael Stoddard and James Mallet; and several aunts and uncles.
Funeral services were held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Winston-Salem, where she was a member. Burial followed at Westlawn Memory of Gardens.
Otis Clayton Phelps
Otis Clayton Phelps, 78, of Clemmons died July 19 at his home. He was born March 25, 1926, in Forsyth County to the late William McKinley and Ruth Daniels Phelps. He was retired from Sara Lee Hosiery and was a member of the First Christian Church of Clemmons. He played as a musician at seven different nursing homes a month as long as his health permitted. He also played with several different music groups.
Surviving are his wife, Lucy Fearrington of the home; a daughter, Linda Meadows and husband William of Advance; a son, Billy Phelps of Woodlawn, Va.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the First Christian Church of Clemmons with Pastor Bob Martin officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Barney William Shore
Barney William Shore, 68, of Lewisville died July 19 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born February 29, 1936, in Forsyth County to Garrell William and Genice Norman Shore. He was owner and operator of Shore’s Garage in Lewisville and a member of Center Grove Baptist Church. He was known by many and a friend to all. He enjoyed NASCAR and playing with his grandkids.
Surviving are two daughters, Beverly Shore Dinkins and husband Jeff and Buffy Shore Disher; two grandchildren, Caralynn Disher and William Lee Disher, all of Lewisville; a brother, Buddy Shore of Lewisville; two sisters, Elsie Sweat of Clemmons and Judy Wolff of King; his faithful companion, Carolyn Shore; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Lewisville Baptist Church with Dr. Mark E. Harris and Rev. Ralph Stanley officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Ebert Earlie Imes
Ebert Earlie Imes, 74, of Clemmons died July 17 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born January 30, 1930, in Clemmons to Annie and Winfield Imes. He was a member of Hickory Grove AME Zion Church and served on the trustee board, usher board and the Senior Choir. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. No. 12. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Clarence, James and twin brother Everette Imes; his sisters, Annie Carter and Elizabeth Parks; and a stepson, Joseph Kennedy Keaton.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Keaton Imes; a daughter, Antonia Imes; a stepson, Jeffery Keaton Sr.; a sister, Dorothy Conrad and husband Walter; a brother, Charlie Imes; a sister-in-law, Betty Imes; three grandchildren, Jeffery Keaton Jr., Janarrica Imes and Nicholas Imes; a daughter-in-law, Connie Ellison of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at Hickory Grove AME Zion Church with Rev. Marcus Farmer officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Sasha Lynn Johnson
Sasha Lynn Johnson of Pfafftown died July 22 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was a beautiful little girl born to Jeremy and Amanda Johnson.
Surviving are her parents; her maternal grandparents, Rev. Thomas and Billie Albert; and paternal grandparents, Bob and Sandy Johnson.
A memorial service was held at Concord United Methodist Church.
