James Charlie Harris
James Charlie Harris, 61, of Winston-Salem died June 7 at his home. He was born March 13, 1942, in Surry County, a son of Charlie Daniel Harris and Josie Edwards Harris. He was a farmer and avid fisherman. He was preceded in death by his father, Charlie Daniel Harris.
Surviving in addition to his mother, Josie Edwards Harris of Winston-Salem are his wife, Dovie Branch Harris of the home; four sons, James Harris and Mike Harris, both of Winston-Salem, Roger Harris of Pfafftown and Tony Harris of King; a daughter, Kimberly Kennedy of the home; three sisters, Barbara Freeman of Winston-Salem, Elaine Wiles of Walnut Cove and Peggy White of High Point; and five grandchildren.
A graveside service was held at Gospel Light Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Frank Shumate officiating.
Michael Ronald Romaniw
Michael Ronald Romaniw, 63, of Winston-Salem died June 11 at his home. He was born January 24, 1940, to Michael and Virginia Babcock Romaniw in Detroit, Mich. He lived in Winston-Salem most of his life and was the owner and operator of MR Sales. He was an avid golfer, and he was voted man of the year for Grandview Golf Club Men’s Association.
Surviving are his wife, Bette Logan Romaniw of the home; a daughter, Samantha Michelle Romaniw of High Point; and two sisters, Karen Morrow and husband John of Lewisville and Nikki Hudspeth and husband Larry of Pfafftown.
A memorial service was held.
Michael Malawski
Michael Malawski, 88, died June 14. Formerly of the Bronx, N.Y., he had been a resident of Forsyth County since August 1998.
Surviving are his son, Michael, of the Bronx, N.Y.; his daughter, Stephanie Emery and husband Walter of Clemmons; a sister, Mary Soprenuk of Florida; and two grandchildren, Leanne Emery Stevenson and husband Rob and Jeannette Emery Wilson and husband Robbie. He enjoyed the visits of his great-grandchildren, Sarah and Laura Stevenson and Theresa, Caroline and Joshua Wilson.
A funeral Mass was held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons, and burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
Julius Dodd Linker Sr.
Julius Dodd Linker Sr., 93, of Clemmons died August 21 at his home. He was born June 16, 1910 in Salisbury, Rowan County, the youngest of 10 children, to William Murray and Leah Earnhardt Linker. He was Senior Class President on the class of 1926 at Boyden High School in Salisbury. He received his AB degree in 1931 and MA degree in mathematics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. He taught mathematics, foreign languages and coached athletics at Clemmons High School and later became a Certified Public Accountant working for Ernst and Ernst Accounting Firm. He was Vice President of Wachovia Bank in Winston-Salem, retiring in 1969. He was a charter member and past president of the Clemmons Civic Club, past president of Carolinas/Virginia Chapter of Tax Executives Institute and served two terms as Chairman of Clemmons School Committee. He was a member of Clemmons Moravian Church where he served on the church board and was a member and chairman of the board of trustees. He was Treasurer of Clemmons Hosiery Mill, Inc. and Clemmons Enterprises, Inc. He was a pianist and soloist and sang his first solo at age 15 in St John’s Lutheran Church in Salisbury. He continued to sing in church choirs and sang a solo performance (The Lord’s Prayer) at Clemmons Moravian Church the week after his 90th birthday. He loved his family and enjoyed playing the piano and organ. He enjoyed many years of Sunday afternoon horseback riding, playing golf and keeping up with all sports, UNC sports in particular.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Wells Linker of the home; his children, J. Dodd Linker Jr. of Clemmons, Dr. Martha Katherine Linker of Charleston, S.C. and Murrianne Linker Mills of Brady, Tex.; his stepson, David L. Cline and wife Brenda M. of Yadkinville; his grandchildren, J. Dodd Linker III of Advance, Linker S. Mills and wife Debora F. of Baltimore, Md., Emily L. Derrick and husband William F. of Seneca, S.C.; his step-grandchildren, Kayla M. and Jacob A. Cline of Yadkinville; and his great-grandchildren, Brianna P. Derrick and Emily K. Derrick of Seneca and Ian S. Mills of Baltimore.
Funeral services were held at Clemmons Moravian Church with Rev. Q. Ray Burke and Rev. Thomas Corbell officiating, and burial followed in the church graveyard. Howard A. Gobble
Howard “Shorty” A. Gobble, 82, of Clemmons died August 20 at his home after a lengthy illness. He was born January 7, 1921, in Davie County to Willis V. and Flossie Lanier Gobble. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 31 years of service. He also served in World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister; and four brothers.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Margaret Foster Gobble; a daughter, Katie Mashburn and husband Jimmy of Wallburg; four sons, Stamey Gobble of Advance, Bobby Gobble and wife Diana of Rural Hall, Ricky Gobble and wife Kay of Wallburg, and Kent Gobble of Clemmons; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters; and three brothers.
A graveside service was held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory with military rites by District 11 Memorial Honor Guard.
Lauren Kathleen Brown
Lauren Kathleen Brown, 25, of Chapel Hill, died August 21. She was born September 22, 1977, in Athens, Ga., to Ray R. and Diane Hamby Brown. She was a dedicated and compassionate Christian who committed her life to helping others. She was a member of Clemmons First Baptist Church. She was a 1996 honor graduate of Forsyth Country Day School and a 1999 graduate of The Georgia Institute of Technology, with a degree in applied biology with high honors. She currently was a three-year student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, pursing a career in pediatrics. Her volunteer mission work included Sojourners in Houston, Texas, World Changers, and St. Joseph’s Hospital’s Mercy Mobile Care, serving Atlanta’s homeless.
Surviving are her mother and father of Clemmons; maternal grandparents, Ray and Edna Hamby of Smyrna, Ga.; paternal grandparents, Rachel R. Brown and the late William Roy Brown of Thomaston, Ga; uncles, aunts and a cousin, Charles R. Hamby and wife Missy, and son J.J., of Cumming, Ga., Roy C. Brown and wife Evelyn of Jonesboro, Ga., Marvin E. Brown and wife Sara Jean of Manchester, Ga., and Martha Rollins and the late H.G. Rollins of Manchester, Ga.
Funeral services were held at Clemmons First Baptist Church with Dr. Robby Phillips officiating, and burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
Ralph Manley Spainhour
Ralph Manley Spainhour, 63, of Pfafftown died August 22. He was born January 11, 1940, in Forsyth County, to Charlie Derman and Mary Evelyn Southern Spainhour. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Elsie; and two brothers, Jack and Michael.
Surviving are a daughter, Michelle Spainhour; a son, Randall Spainhour; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Audrey Tuttle, Rachel Hicks and Deborah Trivette; five brothers, Melvin, Fred, Kenneth, Tony and Keith.
A memorial service was held at Slate Funeral Home in King with Pastor Dan Salmon officiating.
Dewey Jason Wike
Dewey Jason Wike, 74, of Lewisville died August 20 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born February 9, 1929, in Iredell County, to Jacin P. and Mary Bost Wike. He was a member of Macedonia Moravian Church and was retired from the Armour Co. with 33 1/2 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Faircloth Wike of the home; a son, Donald Jason Wike and wife Sarah (Beth); a granddaughter, Donna Elizabeth Wike of Huntersville; a brother, Larry K. Wike and wife Janice of Fairbanks, Alaska; a niece; two nephews; two aunts; an uncle; and several cousins.
Funeral services were held at Macedonia Moravian Church with Rev. Richard Shamel officiating, and burial followed in the church graveyard.
Bessie Midkiff Kirkman
Bessie Midkiff Kirkman, 91, of Mount Airy, the widow of Charlie L. Kirkman, died August 23 at her home. She was born in Surry County on October 26, 1911, to the late Jim and Martha “Sis” Jones Midkiff. She retired from Renfro Corp. after 30 years of service. She was a member of Friendly Tabernacle, where she and her husband helped to establish the church and was one of its first members 52 ago. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Beulah Inman; a son, Harley Kirkman; two sisters, Ada Maynard and Constance Midkiff and three brothers, Frank “Doc” Midkiff, Walter “Jerry” Midkiff and Ben Midkiff.
Surviving a daughter, Lilla Belle Spencer and husband Mack of Toast; four sons, Charles Kirkman and wife Sue of Clemmons, Clyde Kirkman and wife Wanda, and Steve Kirkman and wife Linda, all of Mount Airy, and Fred Kirkman and wife Nita of Anderson, S.C.; and 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Tony Williams, of Mount Airy.
Funeral services were held at Friendly Tabernacle Church with Rev. Dud Spencer and Rev. Roby Wilcox officiating, and burial followed in the Midkiff Cemetery.
Rose Davis Eaton
Rose Davis Eaton, 63, of Tobaccoville died August 22 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She was born in Grayson County, Va., on February 14, 1940, to Dave Andy and Gracie Mae Hancock Davis. She was a member of King Baptist Mission Church in King. She was preceded in death by one brother, Howard Davis.
Surviving are her husband, Roger W. Eaton of the home; a daughter, Michelle Draughn and husband Keith of Pilot Mountain; a son, Ricky Eaton and wife Rosa of East Bend; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two sisters, Jane Puckett of Mount Airy and Mary Griffin of Mooresville; and six brothers, Roger Davis and Danny Davis, both of Pfafftown, Junior Davis, Frank Davis and Billy Davis, all of East Bend, and Roy Davis of Danbury.
Funeral services were held at King Baptist Mission Church with Rev. Johnnie Bowins and Rev. Rex Holder officiating, and burial followed in East Bend Friends Church Cemetery.
Daniel Thomas Wood
Daniel Thomas Wood, 94, died August 19 at Vienna Village. He was born December 6, 1908, in Forsyth County, a son of James Luther and Margaret Elizabeth Lehman Wood. He was a member of Waughtown Baptist Church. He loved the Lord and his church, and was an active member until his health failed. He retired from R.J. Reynolds with 35 years of service. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Tate Wood; two brothers, Noel and Harold Wood; and a sister, Lucy Ketner.
Surviving are a son, Daniel R. Wood and wife Shirley; a grandson, Kevin Wood and wife Melinda; a great-grandson, Nathan Wood; and a great-granddaughter, Hannah Wood.
Funeral services were held in the Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel with Pastor Joseph McWethy officiating, and burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park.
William Eugene Allen
William Eugene “Gene” Allen, 80, formerly of Clemmons,died at Forsyth Medical Center August 21. He was born in Cleveland County May 4, 1923, to William and Aurelia Dover Allen. He was a member of Westview Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, a past master of Clemmons Masonic Lodge 755 and past patron of Clemmons Eastern Star Chapter 373. He retired from Pilot Freight Line and he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served from 1946 to 1948. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nettie Moore Allen, in 1996.
Surviving are his daughters, Janice Beam and husband Bill of Lexington, Martha Welborn and husband Reich of Durham, Sue Frye and husband Ron of Lake Norman and Karen Griffith and husband Jack of Roanoke, Va.; six grandchildren, Jeff Kirk, Shane Frye, Mitzi Taylor, Judd Welborn, Jessica Morgan and Spencer Welborn; a great-grandchild, Adam Taylor; two sisters, Grace Talbert and Evelyn Hill, both of Kings Mountain; and a brother, Hal Allen of Charlotte.
Funeral services were held at Westview Baptist Church with Dr. Carlton T. Mitchell officiating, and entombment followed at Westlawn Memorial Gardens with Masonic rites.
Horace Spencer Hubbard
Horace Spencer “Hub” Hubbard, 80, of Kernersville died August 23 at Bradford Village West in Kernersville. He was born October 9, 1922, in Forsyth County to George and Bertha Hubbard. He had a special love for baseball in his life and started out playing for the minors on many teams and in various places for more than 10 years. When He retired from the minors, he became the general manager for the Hi-Toms minor-league team in Thomasville. During the same time, he was also working and retired from Haverty Furniture. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Eula McGee Hubbard; and his mother and father, George and Bertha Hubbard.
Surviving are two daughters, Yvette Hubbard and husband Don of Kernersville and Stephana Hubbard Ader of Kernersville; two brothers, Bobby Hubbard and wife Imogene of Lewisville and Charles Hubbard and wife Johnsie of Kernersville; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

William Lee Bennett
William Lee “Bill” Bennett, 76, of Yadkinville, formerly of Old Town, died August 20 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born November 20, 1926, in Forsyth County to Walter Lee and Irene Darnell Bennett. He was retired from Hanes Hosiery, a division of Sara Lee Corp., with 43 1/2 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith and was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy on the USS Little Rock. He was preceded in death by his mother, Irene Starling; his father, Walter Bennett; and his stepfather, Wilbert Starling.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Betty Davis Bennett of the home; three children, Mitzi B. Griffin of Pfafftown, Gerri D. Bennett of Yadkinville and Jeffery L. Bennett of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Peyton L. Bennett; a brother, Leon W. Starling and wife Micky of Winston-Salem; and nephews Seth and John Starling.
A family graveside service was held at Forbush Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Bill Hale officiating.
Mary Catherine Jackson Anthony
Mary Catherine Jackson Anthony, 62, of Fancy Gap, Va., formerly of Clemmons, widow of Tommy Roger Anthony, died April 16 at her home. She was born in Surry County on December 31, 1941, to Kathryn Brickell Jackson and the late Jim Jackson. She worked at Northwestern Bank in Wilkesboro and Clemmons. After residing in Clemmons for over 20 years, she and her husband moved to Fancy Gap and owned and operated Bookworm News Stand in Mayberry Mall for several years. She was a member of Fancy Gap United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Robin Fincher and husband Dr. Clark Fincher of Galax, Va., and Renee Westmoreland and husband Kevin of of Mount Airy; two grandsons, Reece Benton Westmoreland and Colt Chrisopher Westmoreland, both of Mount Airy; her mother of Mount Airy; a brother, Tom Jackson and wife Jeannie of Tampa, Fla.; her mother-in-law, Minnie Adams Anthony of North Wilkesboro; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mount Airy with Rev. Layne Pennington and Rev. Mary Parson officiating, and burial followed in Oakdale Cemetery.
A. Vernon Snyder
A. Vernon Snyder, 84, of Midway died April 14 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born December 6, 1919, in Forsyth County to Eugene E. Snyder and Nora Smith Snyder. He was a member of Hebron United Church of Christ. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific and returned to serve in the Winston-Salem Police Department, having retired from Piedmont Airlines after 25 years of service. He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
Surviving are his wife, Edna Conrad Snyder of the home; his sons, Dr. David Snyder and wife Linda of Elon and Kerry G. Crutchfield and wife Vicki of Clemmons; and three grandchildren, Kevin, Andrew and Jason Crutchfield, all of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held at Hebron United Church of Christ with Rev. Jeffery F. Hammonds officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery with military gravesite rites by District 11 Memorial Honor Guard.
Elizabeth Ruth Rosenbaum
Elizabeth Ruth Rosenbaum, 86, of Winston-Salem died April 10 at her home. She was born July 18, 1917, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., to Earl and Mary Eckert Andrews. She was an active charter member of Christ Lutheran Church and a volunteer with Forsyth Medical Center Auxiliary Service for 30 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Rosenbaum; a son, John Edward Rosenbaum; and a brother, Richard Erling Andrews.
Surviving are a son, Bill Rosenbaum and wife Carole of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Linda Rosenbaum Childress and husband Cliff of Clemmons; five granddaughters, Jennifer Gragg and husband Mark, Kimberly Tannehill and husband Lance, Shannon Salter and husband Dave, Tamara Abrams and husband Brad and Candice Saintsing; and five great-grandchildren, Joshua and Hannah Gragg, Ian Tannehill, Nate Salter and Boston Abrams.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel with Dr. Jeff Littrell officiating, and burial followed in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
Linda Lisbeth Hoffman Vestal
Linda Lisbeth Hoffman Vestal, 65, of Pfafftown died April 15 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on February 19, 1939, to Stephen Charles Hoffman and Lisbeth Julia Waldo Hoffman. She was a caregiver by occupation and lived most of her life in Forsyth County.
Surviving are her fiance, Charles Payne, of Tobaccoville; a sister, Judy Jordan of Ovilland, Ohio; four dear friends, Inez and Charlotte Hicks, Keith Hicks and Wayne Berrier; and many more friends.
A service will be held at a later date.
Frances Alley Ingram
Frances Alley Ingram, 89, of Winston-Salem died April 11 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born July 3, 1914, in Rockingham County to Augustus William and Ollie Mae Moore Alley. She was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and was retired from Forsyth Memorial Hospital.
Surviving are a son, Philip Ingram and wife Vicki of Lewisville; a grandson, Robert James Ingram of Lewisville; a sister, Mrs. M.L. (Bobbie) Hall of Winston-Salem; and a brother, A.W. Alley of Clemmons.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park with Rev. Charles Turner officiating.
Austin Lee Bean Jr.
Austin Lee Bean Jr., 81, of Casselberry, Fla. died April 13 in Orlando. He was born March 31, 1923, in Forsyth County to Savannah Rumley and Austin L. Bean Sr. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army, and had lived in Florida for over 23 years. He was formerly employed as a Realtor working in residential and commercial sales in Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Transou Bean, in 1998; and a son, Austin Lee Bean III, in 1989.
Surviving are a daughter, Susan Bean of Casselberry; a grandson, Justin Bean of Durham; and a sister, Thelma Bean Thornton of Lewisville.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Kevin Thompson officiating, burial followed in Crestview Memorial Park with District 11 Memorial Honor Guard performing military rites.
