Mrs. Mildred Cochrane Huffman Pitts

Mrs. Mildred Cochrane Huffman Pitts, 81, of Grace Ridge Retirement died Wednesday, May 12, 2004 at her residence. Born July 27, 1923 in Guilford County she was the daughter of the late Fred L. Huffman and Elizabeth Huffman Burnett. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husbands William E. Cobb and Noah O. Pitts Sr.

Mrs. Pitts was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Morganton attended U.N.C. Greensboro and was a charter member of the Morganton Service League.

She is survived by: son Edward Huffman Harrell of Mt. Juliet Tennessee; sister Eleanor Huffman Harrill and husband Eugene T. Harrill Jr. of Morganton and a granddaughter Emily Elizabeth Harrell of Mt. Juliet Tennessee.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Friday, May 14, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church in Morganton with the Reverend Carl Lindquist officiating. Burial will follow at a later date at Forest Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends following the Memorial Service in the Church gathering area.

Mr. Michael Scott Moore

Mr. Michael Scott Moore, 34, of Marion, went to be with the Lord Monday, March 7, 2005, while at his residence. Born May 11, 1970, in McDowell County, he was a son of Charles L. Moore and Shirley Huskins Moore, both of Marion. Mr. Moore was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church and very active in Children’s Sports. He was employed as an Upholster at Motion Craft of Sherrill Furniture.

A loving & devoted father and husband, he leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Lisa Honeycutt Moore, of the home; A son, Tyler Scott Moore, of the home; A daughter, Megan Grace Moore, of the home; A brother, Dwayne Moore, of Marion; Parental Grandmother, Helen Moore, of Marion; and Maternal Grandmother, Mary Huskins, of Marion.

Funeral Services for Mr. Moore will be held 2:00PM, Thursday, March 10, 2005, in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion, with the Reverends Darrell Worley and Leo Kuykendall officiating. Interment will follow at the Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6:00PM-8:00PM, Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Charles Turner

Charles Turner, age 97, of Old Fort went to be with the Lord Friday July 22, 2005, at his residence.

Born March 7, 1908 in McDowell County. He was the son of the late Mynard Garfield Turner, Sr and Lillie Mae Burgin.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, one daughter Barbara A. Williams and husband, John of Cushing, Texas: two sons Richard Turner and wife, Lonnie, of Old Fort, and Joseph W. Turner and wife Rebecca of Charlotte, N.C. One sister, Willa M. Grindstaff of Old Fort. Four Grandchildren; Susan Wright and husband Wes, Andy Williams and wife Deidre, Laura Watkins and husband Ron and Scott Turner and wife Karen all of Texas. Four great-grandchildren; Alex Wright, Nicholas Williams, Skylar Turner and Madeline Watkins. Several nieces and nephews: several great-nieces and nephews, and several in-laws.

The funeral service for Mr. Turner will be held at 11 A.M. Tuesday at Old Fort United Methodist Church with the Pastor Ronald Allcorn officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethlehem Community Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Old Fort United Methodist Church P.O. Box 149 Old Fort, N.C. 28762or Hospice of McDowell County 218 Logan St. Marion, N.C. 28752.

Mrs. Mary Buckley Tuttle

Mrs. Mary Buckley Tuttle, 95, formerly of Waighstill Street, Morganton died Thursday, July 31, 2003 at Grace Heights Nursing Home. Born December 23, 1907 in McDowell County she was the daughter of the late Joseph H. Buckley and Eugenia Kirby Buckley. Her husband of fifty seven years Romulus Dula Tuttle preceded her in death.

Mrs. Tuttle was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Morganton where she had taught Sunday School and was active in many organizations in the church. She had retired from the North Carolina School for the Deaf, having taught their for forty three years. She was a member of the Morganton Women’s Club and The Study Club.

She is survived by: nieces Annie M. Holt of Arden NC, Virginia Meiburg of Wake Forest NC and a number of great nephews and nieces.

A graveside service will be 2:00 PM Sunday, August 3, 2003 at Forest Hill Cemetery with the Reverend Doctor Matthew Brown officiating.

Mr. Johnnie Nelson Powell

Mr. Johnnie Nelson Powell, 82, of Falls Avenue in Valdese, died Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at his residence following a period of declining health. Born February 17, 1921 in Burke County he was the son of the late Jim Powell and Talitha Branch Powell. A sister Zula Bill Ross; brothers Jerry Powell, Roland Powell, Ray Powell, half brothers George Powell and Glenn Powell preceded him in death.

Mr. Powell was an active member of the first Assembly of God Church in Morganton where he had been a Sunday School Superintendent and a life time honorary Deacon. He had been the Burke County Horseshoe Champion for many years. Mr. Powell had retired from Drexel Heritage Furniture where he had worked for forty years and had worked for nine years at Ethan Allan Furniture.

He is survived by: his wife Bertha Lowdermilk Powell of the home; children Johnnie “Sonny “ Powell Jr. and wife Pat of Morganton, Leon Powell of Morganton, James Powell and wife Elaine of Drexel, Wanda “Sue” Mull and husband Dennis of New Bern, Thad Powell and wife Sandra of Morganton; grandchildren Kim Siddons, Jamie Powell, Dawn Crawford, Chris Powell, Todd Mull, Tammy Hefner, Jeff Mull, Keith Powell, Terri Causby, April Powell, Jonathan Powell; twelve great grand-children; brothers Ralph Powell of Morganton, Odell Powell of Lorraine Ohio and a sister Anna Rae Cody of Mars Hill.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Thursday, January 1, 2004 at the First Assembly of God Church in Morganton with the Reverends J.D. Mallory, Earl Wilcox and Keith Gilliam officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park.

Memorials in Mr. Powell’s memory may be made to Hospice of Burke County, PO Box 1029, Valdese NC, 28690 or to the First Assembly Church of God, P.O. Box 1458, Morganton, NC 28680.

Mary Louise Teague Hughes

Mary Louise Teague Hughes, 89, of Mountain Wellness Center died, Thursday, May 14, 2004. She was born to the late William Elvin and Eva Williams Teague. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, William Vann Hughes. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Old Fort and a Sunday school teacher for a number of years. She was also co-owner of Hughes Department Store.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Vann Hughes, of New York, NY and Nancy Hagan, of Greenville, SC;

Also surviving Mrs. Hughes are three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 AM, Monday, May 17, 2004, at First Baptist Church Old Fort.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Mrs. Ida Lee Hensley Edwards

Mrs. Ida Lee Hensley Edwards, 83, passed away Tuesday, March 08, 2005, at the McDowell Nursing Center after an extended illness. Born March 4, 1922, in McDowell County, she was a daughter of the late J.B. Hensley and Lillie Leakey Hensley. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Edwards was also preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence (Larry) Thomas Edwards. She was an active member of the Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church and retired from Coats America.

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. James Robinson, of Mars Hill; Two daughters, Susan Edwards Pool and Jennifer Murray, both of Marion; She is also survived by four grandchildren, Chris & Travis Pool and Amber & Joshua Murray, all of Marion.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Edwards will be held 11:00AM, Thursday, March 10, 2005, at the Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church with the Reverend Reggie Killough and Brother Allan officiating. Interment will follow at the Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the Services at the Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Nebo Elementary School Library, 254 Nebo School Rd., Nebo, NC 28761 or to Hospice of McDowell County, 218 Logan St., Marion, NC 28752.

Mary E. Bush

Mary E. Bush, age 68, of Morganton, died Sunday, July 24, 2005 after an extended illness at Grace Hospital. She was born the daughter of the late Richard Gerald Bush and Mary Elizabeth Cox Bush on March 9, 1937 in Burke County. Mary was a retired state employee, working for many years at Broughton Hospital as a medical librarian. She had an abundant love for animals, and dedicated her heart and soul to Burke County Friends for Animals.

Mary is survived by numerous friends and will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Edell McClain

Edell McClain, 82, of Elizabethton, TN, died Saturday, February 22, 2003, in Johnson City Medical Center.

Born September 23, 1920, in Roan Mountain, TN, she was a daughter of the late Felix and Bertha Holden Palmer. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Elizabethton, TN. She also attended North Cove Church of God. She was the wife of the late Casey McClain.

Surviving are one son, Graham McClain of Newland, NC; two daughters, Carolyn Hughes of Newland, NC and Mary M. Cresawn of Marion, NC; two sisters, Junie Winters of Roan Mountain, TN and Florence Miller of Elizabethton, TN; a half-sister, Della Me Turbeville of Newland, NC; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held 12:00 Noon, Monday, February 24, 2003, at the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion. Reverend Howard Riddle will officiate with interment following at the Cordell Cemetery, Roan Mountain, TN. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mattie Della Gertrude Melton Jamison

Mrs. Mattie Della Gertrude Melton Jamison, 80, of Morganton, went to be with her Lord Sunday, August 3, 2003. Born November 18, 1922, in Ruth, NC, she was a daughter of the late J.B. Melton and Greta Summie Stamey Melton. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a sister, Fran Melton Speas and two brothers, J.T. Melton and Jack Melton. Mrs. Jamison was a faithful member of the Clark’s Chapel Baptist Church, Lenior and was a substitute teacher for several surrounding counties.

Mrs. Jamison was a beloved wife, Mother and an inspiration to all who knew her. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Reverend McLendon Jamison, of the home;

Also surviving are two daughters, Wende’ Jamison, of Morganton, NC and Elaine Jamison and husband, Ken Pruett, both of Rock Hill, SC;

One brother, Crawford Melton, of Glen Alpine, NC;

Two sisters, Mary McFalls, of Glen Alpine, NC and Elizabeth Bennett, of Moorpark, CA;

Mrs. Jamison is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Sgt. Kent Pruett and wife, Debra and Cpt. Keith Pruett and wife, Catherine, all of Rock Hill, SC; and

Special friends, Terry Jordan, Nancy Jordan, Doris Turbyfill and the Burke County Hospice Staff.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Jamison will be held 1:00PM, Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Larry Cline and Reverend Dan Blackwell officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with Dr. James Melton, Mr. Walter Randall, Mr. Stacy Cain, Mr. Larry Smith, Mr. Henry Good and Mr.Sherrill Cole serving as pallbearers. The Jamison family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the Church.

Memorials may be made in Mrs. Jamison’s memory to Hospice of Burke County, P.O. Box 1029, Valdese, NC, 28690.
