Grace Blackburn Nail
Grace Blackburn Nail, 70, of Pfafftown died January 22 at her home. She was born December 6, 1932, to Samuel and Ocie Worley Blackburn. She lived all of her life in Forsyth County and retired from the Hanes Corp. (now Sara Lee) after 38 years of service. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Monroe Nail; and a brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth Blackburn and Ann Tuttle Blackburn.
Surviving are a daughter, Phyllis Nail Long and husband George Michael Long; a son, Ronald G. Nail and wife Gaynell Shouse Nail; four grandchildren, Ronald Gray Nail Jr. and wife Lisa, Erica Lee Nail, Brandy Leigh Long and Charles Parnell Long; a brother-in-law and wife, H.V. Nail and Betty; four sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Louise N. Little, Mable N. Grubbs, Alice and Ferrel Clodfelter and Betty DeGramo; a number of nieces and nephews; and a special cousin, Ginger Cox, who was more like a sister.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel with Rev. Don Harvey, Rev. Luke Bell and Rev. Doug Jordan officiating, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
William Thomas Hampton Jr.
William “Billy” Thomas Hampton Jr., 45, of Winston-Salem died January 20 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born October 19, 1957, in Winston-Salem, the son of William “Bill” Thomas Hampton and Joy Sexton Hampton. He was a member of the Gospel Light Baptist Church.
Surviving are his parents; sisters Tanya Lynch and husband Randy of Clemmons and Rena’ Dancy and husband Bob and Cindy Flanner and husband Rick, all of Winston-Salem; three nephews, Mike and Steve Dancy and Nick Flanner; and two nieces, Megan Flanner and Nikki Parsons.
Funeral services were held at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Rev. Bobby Robertson officiating, and burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
Andrew Blaine Harper Jr.
Andrew Blaine Harper Jr., 82, of Clemmons died April 2 at the Elms at Tanglewood after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. The son of Andrew Blaine Harper Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Harper, he was born October 9, 1920, in Forsyth County. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. On April 20, 1946, he married Mary Margaret Jones, his wife of almost 57 years. He was an active member of Concord United Methodist Church for 56 years, where he served graciously as chief usher, greeter, Sunday school superintendent, trustee and cemetery chair among his services. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. as a supervisor of Truck and Storage with 37 1/2 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents; three infant siblings; his brothers, John Blaine and Paul Benbow Harper; his sisters, Grace Harper Groce and Virginia Harper Tesh; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Anna Windsor.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret, of the home; a daughter, Kay Elizabeth Harper Windsor and husband Michael of Clemmons; a son, Kenneth Jones Harper and wife Cathy of Lexington; grandchildren, Matthew Howard Windsor and wife Beth of Westfield, Aaron Andrew Windsor of Athens, Ga., Julie Elizabeth Harper of Greensboro and Christopher Smith Harper of Lexington; a great-granddaughter, Anna Elizabeth Windsor of Westfield; two sisters, Ethel Harper Brewer of Clemmons and Helen Harper Isaacs of Winston-Salem; a brother, L. Marion “Bud” Harper of Clemmons; sister-in-law Lucile Jones Hill; brother-in-law Philip Jones and wife Wilma; sister-in-law Grace Jones; nephew Wilbur Hill and wife Julia; and many special nieces, nephews and brothers and sisters-in-law.
Funeral services were held at Concord United Methodist Church in Lewisville with Rev. Thomas Albert and Rev. Edwin Needham officiating, and burial followed at Concord United Methodist Church Cemetery.

George Washington Thomas Jr.
George Washington Thomas Jr., 79, of Clemmons died April 5 at his home. He was born August 20, 1923, in Mount Airy to Margaret and George W. Thomas Sr. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Philippines and in the Pacific War Zone. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Charles David Thomas, in 1995.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Stacy Boles Thomas of the home; two daughters, Doris Lawrence and husband Jim of Phoenix, Ariz., and Joan Poindexter of Clemmons; two sons, Bill Thomas and wife DeEtta of Clemmons and George Mark Thomas and wife Beverly of Clemmons; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and a sister, Kizzire Woodruff. A special thanks to Myrtle Herring for her loving care.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with Chaplain Fred Moretz officiating. A graveside service was at the Old Orchard Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Lucille Bodenheimer Tilley
Lucille Bodenheimer Tilley, 81, died March 31 at Meadowbrook Manor in Clemmons. She was born April 20, 1921, in Forsyth County to Robah E. and Annie Fletcher Bodenheimer. She spent all of her life in Forsyth County and retired from Duplan Corp. and Dize Awning and Tent. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Tilley; three sisters, Nina Allred, Helen Priddy and Norma “Chubby” Kiger; two brothers, Charles Bodenheimer and Donald Bodenheimer; two stepbrothers, Penny Faircloth and Mack Faircloth; and a stepsister, Mary Alice Grubbs.
Surviving are a son, Terry E. Ellis of Mocksville; three grandsons, Darrell Forrester, Anthony Ellis and Danny Ellis, all of Winston-Salem; a great-granddaughter, Daisy Forrester of Winston-Salem; a special niece and caregiver, Debbie Gaither of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Margaret “Dude” Lambert of Clemmons, Dorothy Smitherman of East Bend and Pauline Ligon of Rural Hall; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Welcome Home Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Gaither officiating.
Jessie Honaker Ballance
Jessie Honaker Ballance, 74, of Winston-Salem died April 4 at the Oak Summit Nursing Center. She was born November 19, 1928, in Berwind, W. Va. to Clyde and Iris Honaker. She married Nelson Brooks Ballance on March 14, 1952, and worked as a full-time homemaker. In spite of many years of illness and disability she always maintained a bright outlook on life. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant daughter Anita; an infant son Michael; and her brother Donald Honaker.
Surviving are her son, Jeremy B. Ballance of Kernersville; two granddaughters, Kara and Jennifer Ballance of Clemmons; a grandson, Aaron Ballance of Boone; and her former daughter-in-law, Phyllis Ballance of Clemmons.
A private memorial service was held at the North Carolina Outer Banks.
Ray Gilmer Westmoreland
Ray Gilmer Westmoreland, 69, of Pfafftown died at the Forsyth Medical Center April 1 after a long period of declining health. He was born in Forsyth County on December 14, 1933, to Thomas Nathaniel and Beulah Rierson Westmoreland. He was a member of Jefferson Church of Christ and had retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 30 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army (1954-1956) and was an active member of the American Legion Post No. 290 in King. He loved gospel music and used to sing in quartets. He was an avid bowler and was a former member of the Senior Pro Bowlers Association Tour. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Joe Westmoreland.
Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Barbara Tuttle Westmoreland of the home; a daughter, Amy Jo Westmoreland of Tobaccoville; four brothers, Nathaniel “Nat” Westmoreland of King, John Lee Westmoreland and wife Viola of Rural Hall, Jack Westmoreland and wife Katie of King and Roy Westmoreland (MIA, Korea); and also several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Jefferson Church of Christ with Jerry Simpkins, Glenn VanMeter and Jerry Sweitzer officiating. A graveside service was held in the church cemetery with military honors presented by American Legion Post No. 290.
James Robert Durham Jr.
James Robert “Bob” Durham Jr., 78, of Lewisville died March 31, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born November 4, 1924, in Cedartown, Ga. to James Robert Durham Sr. and Faye Mundy Durham. He worked for Hanes Dye and Finishing Co. of Winston-Salem and worked his way through the ranks to retire as president of the company in 1970. He had already entered the building business as president and owner of his own company, Vineyard Enterprises Inc. and completed the Regency Apartments at 3401 Old Vineyard Road, a highly successful 130 apartment complex. He also built several homes for his family and friends on an 82 acre private development in Lewisville, known as Beechwood. Employment at Hanes Dye was interrupted by World War II as he spent three years in North Africa, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait and Saudia Arabia as an administrator and traveling auditor and won commendations from his commanding general. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucile Mundy Durham; and a brother, Bill.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy White Durham of the home; a son, Cliff Durham and wife Linda of Lewisville; three daughters, Leigh Jarvis and husband David, Delle Clithero and husband John, all of Lewisville and Mignon Durham of Penland; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Judith White Nathans and husband Syd of Durham and Jan White Walch of Huntersville; three stepsons, Jasper White and wife Carolyn of Lexington, Jeffrey White of Winston-Salem and Jere White and wife Liz of Clemmons; eight stepgrandchildren; two sisters, Jeanne Evans of Virginia Beach, Va. and Sue Spence of Arlington, Va.; and a sister-in-law, Catheryne Grogan of Athens, Ga.
Funeral services were held at Lewisville United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Faggert and Rev. Donald Routh officiating, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Pauline Tuttle Stockton
Pauline “Polly” Tuttle Stockton, 90, of Winston-Salem died at Forsyth Medical Center on April 5. She was born in Walnut Cove on April 9, 1912, to Dr. and Mrs. R.G. Tuttle. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Lydia Sunday school class. She was also a member of the Thursday Luncheon Bridge Club and the Shamrock Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Perry Cook Stockton, and her daughter, Linda Stockton Henderson.
Surviving are her twin sons, Jerry C. Stockton of Winston-Salem and Perry W. Stockton of Clemmons; a sister, Kathryn Tuttle Crowe of Millen, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Ruth Tuttle of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Keith Stirewalt of Winston-Salem, Lisa Stirewalt Whipps of Columbus, Ohio, Trish Stockton Powell of King, Jennifer Stockton Parker of Winston-Salem and Stephanie Stockton Smith of Kailua, Hawaii, and eight great-grandchildren, Adele Whipps and Sarah Whipps of Columbus, Ohio, Kathryn Stirewalt of Chattanooga, Tenn., Thomas and Christopher Stirewalt of Winston-Salem, Matthew Parker of Winston-Salem, Mitchell and Victoria Powell of King and Perri Smith of Kailua, Hawaii.
Funeral services were held at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with Dr. David Hughes and grandson, Keith Stirewalt officiating, and burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park.
Barbara Morrison Witham
Barbara Morrison Witham, 83, of Clemmons, the wife of the late Gilbert Minot Witham, died April 1 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born July 3, 1919 in Boston, Mass. to Iddo Kendall and Rose Marriott Ellison Morrison. She was retired from Benjamin Stickney Cable Hospital.
Surviving are a niece, Elaine R. Hunt of Clemmons; and two nephews, Raymond R. Mattson of Charlotte and James Kendal Morrison of Massachusetts.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel with Rev. Arnett Harris officiating, and burial was at Main Street Cemetery in Rowley, Mass.
Martha Ann Cobler
Martha Ann Cobler, 61, of Winston-Salem died April 2 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born July 2, 1941, in Forsyth County to the late Joseph A. and Dorothy Fulp Huff. She was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 32 years of service. She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Dorothy Adams Huff.
Surviving are a daughter, Sharon Moser and husband Jay of Winston-Salem; a son, Michael Douglas Cobler and wife Christina of Clemmons; two granddaughters, Kayla and Morgan Cobler; a stepgrand-daughter, Jamie Moser; and a special friend, Pete Berrier of Lexington.
A graveside service was held at God’s Acre with Rev. John Rights officiating.
Lula Estelle Rucker Dalton
Lula Estelle Rucker Dalton, 91, of Lewisville died June 11 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born August 4, 1911, in Troutville, Va., to Frank Milton and Dolie Myers Rucker. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church of Lewisville. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Creed Dalton; a daughter, Ethelene Dalton; her parents; five brothers; and four sisters.
Surviving are three daughters, Katherine Wall and husband Weldon of King, Ruth Ketner and husband Bobby of Rural Hall and Betty Pennington and husband Bill of Lewisville; two sons, Roy Dalton and wife Frankie of East Bend and Lonnie Dalton and wife Carol of Stafford, Va.; 18 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lizzie Goad of Lewisville and Margie Shelton of East Bend.
Funeral services were held at Grace Baptist Church of Lewisville with Dr. Ricky Hamann officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
James Larry Dennis
James Larry Dennis, 62, of Advance died June 11 at his residence. He was born July 10, 1940, to James Charles and Mamie Lee Goins Dennis in Montgomery County. He was a native of Montgomery County and had lived in Forsyth County for the past 20 years where he owned and operated L.D.’s Masonry. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Donna Kay Dennis.
Surviving are his wife, Louise Russell Dennis of the home; three children, Mitzi Wood and husband Chip of Clemmons, Yogi Ussery of Kernersville and Shannon James and husband Tommy of Stanley; three grandchildren, Kandy Cornwell, Marshall James and Dylan Wood; a great-granddaughter, Olivia Cornwell; and a brother, Lester Dennis and wife Ruth of Knox, Ind.
Funeral services were held at the Mausoleum Chapel of Eastlawn Gardens of Memory in Kernersville.
Stella Blevins Saylor
Stella Blevins Saylor, 91, died June 14 at High Point Regional Hospital. She was born December 26, 1911, in Washington, N.C., to the late Edward and Elizabeth Craft Blevins. She was a member of Trinity Christian Church of Pfafftown. She was a loving mother and grandmother.
Surviving are a very special friend, Paul “Peewee” Brewer of Davidson County; a son, Carl Saylor and wife Florence of Lewisville; a stepdaughter, Betty Spainhour of Winston-Salem; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Opal Floyd and Jean Scales, and husband Vernon; and a brother, R. K. Blevins and wife Colleen; all of Kernersville.
A graveside service was held at Pine Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. J. R. Gossett officiating.
Carolyn Louise Hartman
Carolyn Louise Hartman, 79, of Advance died June 12 at Meadowbrook Manor in Clemmons. She was born in Davie County, November 11, 1923, the daughter of J.A. and Ruth Butner Hartman. She taught school in the North Carolina school systems, both in Davie and Davidson counties for more than 35 years. She was a lifelong resident of Advance and was a member of Advance United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star and N.C. Association of Retired Teachers. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Walter B. Hartman.
Surviving are a sister, Elsie H. Vogler and husband Ed; a sister-in-law, Virginia Hartman; two nieces, Janine Roberts and husband Richard and Sandy Hartman; four nephews, Ron Vogler and wife Charlotte, Bill Hartman and wife Mary Lou, Ed Vogler Jr. and Tim Vogler and wife Marie; and many other family members and friends.
Funeral services were held at Advance United Methodist Church with Rev. Harry Sammon officiating, and burial followed at Advance Baptist Church Cemetery.
Merna Nadine Tierney Lewis
Merna Nadine Tierney Lewis, 77, of Lewisville died June 8. She was born on an Easter Sunday, April 4, 1926. A gifted vocalist and pianist, she sang weekly on WMBI Radio (Chicago). She was generous with her talents, performing and teaching for most of her life. A devout Christian and former member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church, she taught Bible studies, Sunday school classes and was very involved in Christian Women’s, PTA and her community. She was married to her husband, Lee, for 55 years.
Surviving are their children, Greg and wife Rose, Cynthia, Wendy and David and wife Jan; grandchildren Michael, Hannah, and Kitty, Mary Lewis; and her siblings, Jean, Sally and John and their families, together with the many friends who enriched her life.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
Morgan Nancy Barr
Morgan Nancy Barr, 2, daughter of Edwin Scott and Mandy Clair Barr of Sherrills Ford, died June 12 at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in Mooresville. She was born on November 18, 2002, in Mt. Pleasant, Mich.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her maternal grandparents, Harold and Mary Clair of Charleston, S.C.; paternal grandparents Nancy D. Barr of Clemmons and the late James E. Barr; godparents Darren Barr of Lexington and Jayne Schwab of St. Mary’s, Ga.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
A Mass of Christian burial was held at St. Therese Catholic Church in Mooresville with Rev. James V. Keogh, S.J., officiating. Burial followed in Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery in Catawba.
Shelby Jean Allen Parks
Shelby Jean Allen Parks, 63, died June 11 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born July 19, 1939, the daughter of the late Charles Lesley and Emma Mae Easter Allen. She was a sweet, kind and loving person. She was of the Baptist faith and loved to cook, sew and work in her flower gardens.
Surviving are three sons, Barry Parks Jr. of Tennessee, Roy “Dwayne” Parks of Winston-Salem and Ronnie Beane of Mount Airy; three brothers, Tony Allen and wife Wendy of Lewisville, David Allen and wife Judy of King, and John Allen and wife Teresa of King; four sisters, Anne Snow and husband Henry of Siloam, Ruth A. Lawson and husband Jimmy of King, Laura Brown of Florida and Elaine Bocock of Virginia; seven grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a dear family friend and ex-husband, Barry Parks Sr.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall with Rev. Freddy Moretz officiating, and burial followed at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall.
Frances Simms Lashmit
Frances Simms Lashmit, 72, of Winston-Salem died June 13 at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons. She was born March 3, 1931, in Pardee County, Va., to James Marvin Simms and Daisy Gilbert. She was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church in King. She retired from Northwestern Bank after many years of service as a bookkeeper in the check-processing center. Preceding her in death was her husband, Cecil Edward Lashmit.
Surviving are her four daughters, Peggy Tesh, Karen Jones, Diann Paschal and Rita Gillis; a son, Mike Soffera; two brothers; two sisters; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. All of the family currently resides in Winston-Salem.
A memorial service was held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Father Larry Hunt officiating. A graveside committal service was held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
Carl Merritt
Carl Merritt, 84, formerly of Lewisville and recently of Springwood Care Center, died June 15 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Forsyth County May 2, 1919, the son of Benjamin and Eva Grubbs Merritt. He was a former member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church, where he was active as an elder. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran serving his country with the 5th Army. He owned and operated Merritt Construction Co. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Flynn Merritt.
Surviving are a daughter, Tammy Merritt Jackson and husband Stephen of Winston-Salem; a son, Rick Merritt and wife Connie of Winston-Salem; a sister, Alma Scott of Kernersville; and a granddaughter, Rachel Merritt of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park cemetery.
