Philip Gerold Todd, Jr. – Oak Island
Philip Gerold Todd, Jr., 53, of Oak Island, North Carolina, passed away unexpectedly on February 22, 2011. He was born on October 20, 1957 in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, son of the late Philip G. Todd, Sr. of Georgia and survived by Elidia (Hermel) Todd of Maryland. He married
Susan Crocker (Hawley) Todd in 1995. Phil worked as a vending manager for Marriott Food Services at the National Security Agency and at The World Bank. From there, he owned S & H Laundry Service, along with his wife, for over 13 years.
After his retirement, Phil and his wife moved to Oak Island, North Carolina where he enjoyed the Caswell Beach Turtle Watch, playing golf, and spending time with friends and family. A relaxed and fun-loving person, Phil made many friends throughout his life.
Phil is survived by his loving wife Susan of 15 years; son Philip G. “Jerry” Todd, III, his wife Kami Todd; step-son Robert Francis Thalheimer; granddaughter Kayli ‘Kay’ Todd; brother Peter Todd; sister Lynda Todd-Sanchez; and many beloved extended family and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at Peacock–Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service, 1411 North Howe Street, Southport, North Carolina.

Leota A. Cheney (Toni Lei) – Southport
Leota Antoinette (Toni Lei) Cheney age 45 formerly of Southport, died Tuesday February 22, 2011.
Toni Lei was born in Southport on January 13, 1966. She was a 1984 graduate of South Brunswick High School. She was a LPN with North Care Home Health of Kinston, NC. She was preceded in death by her father, Texas Neil Cheney and also by a very dear father who loved Toni as his own, William Harrison Cordrey.
She is survived by her mother, Mary Jones Cordrey of Stem, NC; two sons, Michael Cory Brown of Stem, NC, Harrison Ray Hopkins of Waterloo, SC; a brother, Richard Egan Holden of Chesapeake, VA; a sister, Lisa Cordrey Mangum of Stem, NC, and a beloved grandfather Samuel Wesley Holden of Southport, NC.
A memorial service will be held Saturday February 26, 2011 at 2pm at the chapel of Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Service.
Raymond W. Van Noordt Jr. – Caswell Beach
Mr. Raymond W. Van Noordt Jr. age 80 of Caswell Beach died Monday February 21, 2011 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center.
Mr. Van Noordt was born in Passaic, New Jersey on July 22, 1930 and was the son of the late Raymond W. Van Noordt Sr. and Catherine Vant’Slot Van Noordt. He was an Engineer with New England Telephone prior to his retirement. He was an avid golfer.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years Joan Van Noordt; his sons, Todd (Candy) of Forest, Va., Brett of St. Albans, Vt., Ross of Leander, Tx., Glenn (Samone) of Draden, Md., Scott of Oak Island; grandchildren, Ryan, Michael, Wesley, Austin, Rachel, Jayme, Heather and Robert; a brother, Irving Van Noordt(Joan) of Appomattox, Va.; a sister, Marie(John) Davies of Arlington, Vt.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday February 23, 2011 from 2-5 pm at the Caswell Dunes Home Owners Center, Caswell Beach.

Dr. Shepard Nash Dunn – Southport
Dr. Shepard Nash Dunn of Southport, NC passed away on Saturday Feb. 19, 2011.
Shepard was born and raised in Sumter, SC where he graduated from Edmunds High School. After discharge from US Marine Corp in 1946, he attended and graduated from Davidson College. Next he completed his medical degree at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Upon completion of his internship and residency in Ophthalmology, he began practice in Columbia, SC. Later, he became one of the founders of Columbia Eye Clinic. He also established the Brunswick County Eye Clinic and Robeson County Eye Clinic in NC before retiring from Carolina Eye Associates in Pinehurst, NC.
He is survived by his wife Jennifer Dunn of Southport, NC; sons William A. Dunn and wife Ruth of Carrollton, TX, Joseph R. Dunn and wife Gail of Raleigh, NC, and Shepard N. Dunn Jr. and Elizabeth of Vincennes, IN; grandchildren Kristin Hooke of San Antonio, TX, Amanda Dunn of Round Rock TX, Susan Dunn of Carrollton, TX, Bailey Dunn of Charleston, SC, Page Dunn of Raleigh, NC, Nash Dunn of Vincennes, IN, Ryan Dunn of Evansville, IN, Caroline Dunn of Vincennes, IN; sister Alice Nash Lightsey of Atlanta, GA; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ann Nash Dunn of Sumter, SC, Dr J. Ralph Dunn of Sumter, SC, Brother William J. Dunn of Knoxville, TN and Brother J. Ralph Dunn Jr of Raleigh, NC.
Shepard was an avid reader, hunter, sailor, and basketball fan. He delighted in TexMex cuisine, seafood, sardines, boiled peanuts, and anything with garlic.

Kathleen Hewett Williamson – Southport
Mrs. Kathleen Hewett Williamson, 95 of Southport, died February 18, 2011 at Ocean Trail Nursing Center in Southport. Mrs. Williamson was born April 27, 1915 in Brunswick County, daughter of the late Henry J. and Annie Mae Hewett. Mrs. Williamson was a member of Lighthouse Pentecostal Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Vander Ville Williamson who died in 1964, two brothers Sink Hewett and Norman Hewett; three sisters Dorothy McDowell, Lena Lee and Myrtle Jones; and a grandson Terry Williamson.
Surviving include her son McNeill Williamson; three daughters, Lois St. George, Betty Brown and husband John Doug Brown, and Loretta Mikuart all of Southport; a brother Ernest Hewett and wife Hilda of Tabor City; a sister Irene Suggs of Southport; eleven grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm Monday, February 21, 2011 in the Southport Baptist Church Chapel. Reverend Jason Bland will officiate the service and burial will follow in the Northwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Sunday at Peacock – Newnam & White Funeral Service.
Billy Ray Stone – Shallotte
Billy Ray Stone, age 20, died Wednesday, February 16, 2011.
Billy was born May 21, 1990 in Bradford County Pennsylvania, son of Daniel E. Stone, Sr. and Teresa Hatfield Stone. He was a 2009 graduate of West Brunswick High School.
Survivors in addition to his parents include his fiancé Katie Hays of Shallotte; daughter Karmen Stone of Shallotte; brother Daniel E. Stone, Jr. of Burgaw; four sisters Shelly Strider of Ocean Isle, Amanda Stone of Ocean Isle, Daniell Bazmore of Ash, and Carol Lowery of Ash.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 pm Monday, February 21, 2011 at Old Shallotte Baptist Church with Reverend Garrett Hays officiating.
Joseph Elridge Stanley – Shallotte
Joseph Elridge Stanley age 78 of 1581 Bricklanding Road, Shallotte died Tuesday February 15, 2011 at his home.
Mr. Stanley was born in Brunswick County on November 27, 1932 and was the son of the late William Amos Stanley and Grace Lee Gurganus Stanley.
He is survived by his wife Jan Beck Stanley; two sons, Joseph Stanley II , Jeff Stanley of Shallotte; two daughters, Joanna Stanley of Shallotte, Jamie Trull of the home; a sister, June Macleod of Shallotte; 12 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Friday February 18, 2011 at 2pm at Jennies Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home.

Roy B. Clayton, Jr. – St. James
Roy B. Clayton, Jr. 75 of St. James died Saturday, April 28, 2012 at his home after a long battle with cancer. Mr. Clayton was born October 13, 1936 in Tryon, Georgia, the son of the late Roy B. Clayton Sr. and Bessie Clayton. He was a graduate of Johns Hopkins University, and was the former owner of Clayton Auto Air in Greensboro. Mr. Clayton lived in Greensboro for 30 years, and then lived in Carolina Trace in Sanford, and for the past six years in the St. James community of Southport.
Surviving are his fiancé Linda Logue of St. James, a daughter Kim Ison of Blufton, South Carolina, a brother Richard Clayton and wife Radine of Greensboro, and one grandson.
A memorial service will be held in Baltimore, Maryland at a later date.

Randall “Randy” Dunnington – Oak Island
Randall “Randy” Dunnington, 61 of Oak Island died unexpectedly on Friday, April 27th at Dosher Memorial Hospital. Originally from Dayton, Ohio, Randy and his wife, Carletta, moved to Oak Island in 2000 after retiring from Lucent Technologies in Columbus, Ohio as a computer engineer. He was a graduate of The Ohio State University with an Undergraduate degree in Computer Science and also a Master’s degree in computer science. Randy loved boating, golfing, making stained glass, and showing his classic Corvette cars at car shows.
Randy was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carletta, and his parents. Randy is survived by his stepson and wife, Ryan and Michella Bowman of Oak Island; brothers Donald Dunnington from Palmetto, Florida, and Gary Dunnington from Highland Vill, Texas; sisters, Beverly Dunnington from Dayton, Ohio and Diana Dunnington from Garden Grove, California, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family will hold a celebration of Randy’s life on Saturday, May 5th from 1 to 4 p.m. at the home of Ryan and Michella Bowman. A burial at sea will occur at a later date.

Margaret R. Leverett – Southport
Mrs. Margaret R. Leverett, 89 of Southport, passed away on April 29, 2012 at Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport. Mrs. Leverett was born November 6, 1922 in High Point, North Carolina, the daughter of the late Walter and Lettie King Rich. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, George T. Leverett, Jr.
Surviving is her son George Talmadge “Tal” Leverett, III of Nevada; a daughter Rhonda Leverett of Bolivia; three grandchildren George T. Leverett, IV, Kelly Elizabeth Leverett Breeden, and Michael Tompkins, and two great-grandchildren.
Margaret was a preschool teacher, and loved to do crafts such as crocheting and quilting. She was always active; and in her late 70’s was a member of the 100 mile walking club. She achieved the 100 miles twice. Until her illness, she was a member of the Southport Senior’s Club. She contributed a chapter of Southport history to Susie Carson’s book, published under the title “Joshua’s Dream”.
A private family service will be held.

Michael James Waldron – Oak Island
Michael James Waldron, age 59, of Oak Island died Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Parkway Medical Center in Decatur, Alabama.
Mr. Waldron was born June 16, 1952 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of Eleanor Stommel Waldron of Pennsylvania and the late James Joseph Waldron. He loved to personalize cars and motorcycles. Mr. Waldron had a passion for watching wildlife and had his own personal wildlife sanctuary. Mr. Waldron was a loving husband and friend. He was a kind gentle man with a big heart.
Survivors include his wife Lynn Waldron of Oak Island; his mother Eleanor Waldron of Pennsylvania; one brother Tommy Waldron and wife Peggy of New Jersey; four sisters, Eleanor Kellon and husband Andy of Pennsylvania, Rosemary Waldron of Wisconsin, Marie Waldron of Durham, North Carolina, and Annie Staskel-Woodworth and husband Rick of Pennsylvania; several nieces and nephews and his rescue dogs, Merlin, Allie, and Matilda.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Shirley Mae Grainger – Southport
Shirley Mae Grainger, age 68, of Southport died Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Dosher Memorial Hospital.
Ms. Grainger was born November 4, 1943 in Richmond, Virginia, daughter of the late James Forest Grainger and Georgia Langford Grainger. She worked as a greeter for Southport Wal-Mart for many years before her declining health.
Survivors include her dear companion who loved her so very much, Jeremy Rivenbark of Southport; son James Linwood Potts of Sunrise, Florida; and one sister Joann Dix of Bracey, Virginia.
Funeral services will be 7:00 pm, Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service Chapel in Southport with Reverend Leroy Martin officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
