Mary Elizabeth Davis Holton
Mary Elizabeth Davis Holton, 87, of Lewisville passed away Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, at The Oaks at Forsyth. She was born on Nov. 26, 1920, in Forsyth County to Samuel Brevard and Wilda Douglas Davis. Mrs. Holton was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Holton Sr.; her son, Thomas E. Holton Jr.; and two brothers, Sam and “Bunk” Davis. She is survived by her daughter, Marty Holton Butner, and her husband, George; five grandchildren, Todd Butner and his wife, Jan; Lorie Mody and her husband, Samir; and Emily, Betsy and Ben Butner; three sisters, Inez Calloway, Betty Brown and Ann Goodson; two brothers, Bob and Jerry Davis; four great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service was conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Forsyth Memorial Park, with the Rev. David Merritt officiating. Love for Mary may be expressed by donating a living plant, a bird feeder or a bird house to a senior friend. Acknowledgements may be sent to the family. Memorials may be made to Hope Moravian Church, 2759 Hope Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27127. The family wishes to express their thanks to the care givers and friends during Mary’ s illness.

Dorothy Gray Sain Moore
Mrs. Dorothy Gray Sain Moore of Lewisville went to be with her Lord Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008. A native of Forsyth County, she was born on June 5, 1938, to the late Thomas E. and Nova Dull Sain. She was a devoted and active member of Concord United Methodist Church of Lewisville. Mrs. Moore was an avid gardener and a member of Lewisville Garden Club. She was retired from N.C. Baptist Hospital and Blue Cross Blue Shield. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Jennings Moore; and brother Eugene Sain. To cherish memories of her life are daughter Jenifer Moore Gibson and son-in-law Matthew R. Gibson; a sister, Sarah S. Prevette, and husband Kenneth; devoted friend Dot Songer, all of Lewisville; and a host of relatives and friends. A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Concord United Methodist Church in Lewisville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Concord United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1095, Lewisville, NC 27023; Hospice; or the American Cancer Association. The family would like to thank the staff of Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for their help and support and wishes a special thank you to Leanne and Leslie for their compassion and kindness. A special thank you to the WFUBMC Comprehensive Cancer Center’ s physicians and staff, especially the Radiation-Oncology Department.

Keith Eugene Strauss
Mr. Keith Eugene Strauss Sr., 70, of Clemmons, formerly of Corning, N.Y., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Born April 6, 1937, in Osceola, Pa., he was the son of Bernita S. Mather of Corning and the late Louis J. Strauss. Mr. Strauss was retired from Wake Forest University. In addition to his family, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 35 years, Marian Velie Strauss; as well as brothers Roger L. Strauss and Carl J. Strauss. He is survived by his children, a daughter, Pamela (William) Parish of Hoffman Estates, Ill.; and sons Keith E. (Becky) Strauss Jr. of Walkertown; Plyna George Strauss of Stanleyville; and Bernard L. (Kelly) Strauss of Winston-Salem. Surviving grandchildren are Bryan C. Strauss, Amy L. Strauss, Linda G. Strauss, Megan Strauss, Erin L. Strauss and Andrea L. Strauss. A sister also survives him, Lucille M. Radeszisisky of Corning; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. A beloved dog, Molly, also survives him; as do special friends Ruth and Bernie Cundiff; and neighbors Steve and Susan Breedlove. The family will receive from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 16, at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, with a service to follow immediately at noon. Dr. Chapman will preside. Burial will be at Parklawn Memorial Gardens in Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff of the Transitional Care and Palliative Care Units of Forsyth Medical Center as well as the staff of Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.

Sheree D. Williams
Sheree D. Williams, 40, died peacefully Wednesday morning, Feb. 13, 2008, after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Sheree was a dedicated mother, wanting to raise her daughter, Christian. She was a loving daughter, sister and friend to all who knew her. Sheree worked for Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center at the Kimel Park site. She was preceded in death by her father, David C. McBride. She was of Baptist faith and a member of Center Grove Baptist Church. Sheree loved life, the beach and skating. She was an avid speed skater and a member of speed teams in Winston-Salem and High Point where she won many competitions, going on to the Nationals. She was the daughter of Janet Lane and stepdaughter of Arley Lane. She leaves behind her 10-year old daughter, Christian Balee Williams of the home; her brother, Scott McBride, and wife Robin of Lewisville; stepmother Kathy McBride; and grandmother Kate McBride of Winston-Salem. There will be no public visitation. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. The family would like to thank Dr. Julia Lawrence and Dr. Janet Horton and Hospice for their care. Many thanks to her former husband Jeff Williams for all the support he has given to us these past years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Kate B. Lindsay Franklin Miller
Mr. Lindsay Franklin “L.F.” Miller, Jr., 80, passed away Sunday, February 17, 2008 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born January 19, 1928 in Forsyth County to the late Lindsay Franklin Miller, Sr. and Tishie Callicutt Miller. Mr. Miller was a member of Lewisville Baptist Church and was a United States Navy veteran serving during WWII. He was self-employed and enjoyed fishing and gardening. Preceding him in death were two sisters, Maxine Archer and Dot Foster. Surviving is his wife, Betty Poindexter Miller; three children, Lindsay F. Miller III (Judy) of Rocky Mount, NC, Veda Luka (Steve) of Winston-Salem, and Tony Miller (Alice) of Jacksonville, NC; six grandchildren, Mary Jordan, Mikaela Anderson, Craig Luka, Jaclyn Branch, Denise Miller, and Matthew Miller; one great-grandchild, Emma Branch; also surviving is a brother, Ed Miller (Nannie) of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at Lewisville Baptist Church with Rev. Les Puryear officiating. Burial will follow at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Richard Edwin “Dick” Moser
Richard Edwin “Dick” Moser, 74, of Lewisville died October 12 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born February 15, 1928, in Forsyth County to Sidney Thomas Sr. and Carrie Mock Moser. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. March 1, 1983, with 38 years of service where he worked in the 91 Machine Shop. He served as a pharmacist tech in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He loved all sports and throughout his lifetime he played, coached, supported and watched many baseball, Little League and softball teams in Forsyth and Yadkin counties. He managed and played for the Lewisville Stars baseball and softball team for over 30 years. He most recently played for the Lewisville Oldies softball team. He was Lewisville’s “Citizen of the Year” in 1985. He loved his grandchildren and rarely missed any activities they were involved in. He and his wife, Clara, established the “Joanie Moser Memorial Park” in Lewisville in memory of their daughter and lit the “Joanie” tree at Christmas for all to see. He was a lifelong member of Lewisville United Methodist Church where he served as church treasurer for eight years and Sunday School treasurer for 32 years. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and extremely generous to all. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joanie Moser; a sister, Dorothy Holder; and a brother, S.T. Moser Jr.
Surviving are his wife, Clara Miller Moser of the home; a daughter, Terri Moser Vogler and husband Clay of Huntsville; two grandsons, David Vogler and wife Megan of Lewisville and Richard Daniel Vogler and fiancee’ Diane Mercer of Huntsville; two sisters, Louise Reynolds of Lewisville and Pauline Longest of Fayetteville; and a brother, Glenn Moser of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at at Lewisville United Methodist Church with Rev. Don Routh and Rev. Jim Faggart officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Lewisville United Methodist Church, 6290 Shallowford Road, Lewisville, N.C. 27023.

David A. Hall
David A. Hall, 86, of Clemmons died October 1 at his home. He was born March 4, 1916, to the late David R. and Helen Halbritter Hall, in East Syracuse, N.Y. He played French horn for the Syracuse Symphony for four years and later received a scholarship to the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied under French horn legends Anton Horner and Marcel Tabuteau before graduating in 1941. He went on to play with The Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra and The National Symphony in Washington, D.C. During World War II, he joined the U.S Navy Band in Washington, D.C., and retired in 1973 as a chief musician after 30 years of service. Following his military retirement, he worked as a piano technician for Gordon Keller Music in Alexandria, Va., for more than 20 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Viola Landers Hall; and two brothers, Edward and Clifford Hall.
Surviving are his brother, Francis Hall of Syracuse, N.Y.; five nephews; five nieces their families; and many others who considered him a family member.
Funeral services were held at Arlington National Cemetery, followed by the burial in Section 48, near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The Rev. Evangeline Bailey Taylor, a friend and former Navy Band vocalist, officiated.

Almena Spann Thomas
Almena Spann Thomas of Winston-Salem died October 6 at the Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons. She was a native of Rembrandt, S.C., born September 6, 1908, the daughter of the late John Boyd and Clara Spann. She was a member of the Alpha and Omega Metaphysical Church of Faith and was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 37 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Bull Thomas; and her son, John Leroy Thomas.
Surviving are two grandsons, Donald Jackson Sr. and wife Evon of Atlanta, Ga. and Michael Thomas of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters, Almeta Thomas of Winston-Salem and Conelia Thomas of Atlanta, Ga.; three great-grandsons, Arthur Jackson and wife Debbie of Winston-Salem, Donald Jackson Jr. and wife Carol of Columbus, Ohio, and Joe Pearson of Winston-Salem; two great-granddaughters, Danyell Hart and Joesheia Pearson, both of Winston-Salem: seven great-great-grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held in the chapel of the Russell Funeral Home, and burial followed at Piedmont Memorial Gardens.

Della Avoid Jackson
Della Avoid Jackson, 97, of Mount Airy, the wife of the late Thomas Grover Jackson, died October 6 at Northern Hospital of Surry County. She was born April 1, 1905, in Surry County to John Henry and Mary Frances King Jackson. She was a homemaker and a member of Bannertown Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Reveta Gunnell and husband Vernon of Clemmons and Mary Faye Freeman and husband Spencer of Mount Airy; a son, Raymond Odell Jackson and wife Estelle of Mount Airy; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Cox-Needham Funeral Home with Rev. Robert McCrary officiating, and burial followed in the Brown Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery.

Franklin Hunter Hammons
Franklin Hunter Hammons, 95, formerly of Lewisville, died at Forsyth Medical Center October 8. He was born in Yadkin County March 9, 1907, to Franklin and Amanda Hunter Hammons. He was a member of South Fork Baptist Church and had retired from Brown & Williamson Tobacco Co. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Forrest.
Surviving are three brothers, Bob Hammons and wife Linda of Lewisville, Curtis Hammons of Winston-Salem and Al Hammons Sr. of Kernersville; and two sisters, Virginia Vaughn and Colleen Whicker and husband Harold, both of Walkertown.
A graveside service was held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory with Rev. Jack Martin officiating.

Joseph Maurice Stewart
Joseph Maurice Stewart, 81, of Clemmons died October 8 at Lexington Memorial Hospital. He was born September 20, 1921, in Yadkin County to Charles T. and Nettie Winfrey Stewart. He was retired from General Motors and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Mary Agnes Hull Stewart of the home; three sons, Charles Tillman Stewart “Tim” and wife Beth, Thomas Bryan Stewart and wife Linda, all of Haw River, Joseph M. Stewart Jr. “Jay” and wife Rita of Greensboro; a daughter, Maurene S. Minton of Kernersville; two sisters, Helen Cody of Lexington and Annie Woods of Burlington; and eight grandchildren, Brian Matthew Stewart, Joseph Michael Stewart, Meghan Maurene Stewart Morgan, Mollie Elizabeth Winfrey Stewart, Jared Thomas Stewart, Jane Melinda Stewart, Joseph Cooper Rickards and Jacob Stewart Rickards.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Kenion Coleman officiating, and burial followed in Forest Hill Memorial Park in Lexington.

Mary Vernell Palmer Payne
Mary Vernell Palmer Payne, 73, of Westfield died October 7 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born October 16, 1928, in Stokes County to Elijah Lee and Lillian Hester Jones Palmer.
Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Robert Glenn Payne Jr., of the home; two daughters, Brenda Jessup and husband Kenneth of Clemmons and Sylvia Jackson and husband Ted of Pilot Mountain; two sons, Jeff Payne and wife Susan of Pinnacle and Robert Lynn and Karen Payne of Westfield; five grandchildren, Lisa Jackson, Ashley Payne Atkins and husband Kevin, Jessica Payne, Ellis Payne and Joseph Payne; and a brother, Billy Ray Palmer of King.

Ruth Alberta Craver Hire
Ruth Alberta Craver Hire, 82, of Clemmons died January 25 at her home in Clemmons, where she had lived for 38 years. She was born in Forsyth County on July 2, 1920, to Albert Lee and Hattie Clementine Jones Craver. As a lifelong homemaker, her greatest pleasure was sharing her many domestic talents with family and friends. A member of the Church of Christ, she previously attended at Ebert Street and most recently at Arcadia Church. She enjoyed her association with the Clemmons Senior Citizens Club and was interested in community concerns. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Frank Monroe Hire.
Surviving are her daughters, Ann Carr and husband Almon of Morganton and Emily H. Speaks of Richmond, Va.; her sons, David Hire and wife Jean of Sydney, Australia and Jim Hire and wife Shirley of Lexington; grandchildren Matt Wall of Huntersville, Christopher Hire of Sydney, Australia, Brandon Hire and wife Shannon of Wallburg and Abbey Nalls and husband Peter of Dumfries, Va.; stepgrandsons Brett Proffit of Sparta and Craig Osborne of Winston-Salem; adopted grandchildren, Hannah and Austin Pfaff of Pfafftown; a brother, Eugene W. Craver; sisters-in-law Hattie Mae and Nellie Mae Hire, all of Clemmons; seven nieces and nephews; and close family friends, Bill and Dawn Pfaff.
A graveside service was held at Westlawn Gardens in Clemmons.

Mack Arthur James
Mack Arthur James, 57, of Clemmons, the husband of Vickie Curtis James, died January 22 in Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel.

Charles Calvin McGee
Charles Calvin “CC” McGee, 56, of Pfafftown died January 23 at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Forsyth County, a son of Raymond C. and Ella Eaton McGee, and was a retiree of the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Department. He was a member of the Union Cross Moravian Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, leader for the church youth group and youth counselor for the Youth Camp at Laurel Ridge. He served as president of the School Resourse Officer’s Association and president of the Drug Coalition. He was a past Master of the Forsyth Masonic Lodge No. 707, and was a master chief in the U.S. Naval Reserve with over 30 years of service. He was preceded in death by his father; and a sister, Gaynell McGee.
Surviving are his wife, Colette Love McGee of the home; a daughter, Amber Stovall and husband Mark of Apex; his mother, Ella Eaton McGee; two brothers, Eugene McGee and Robert Melvin McGee, all of Kernersville; and two grandchildren, Luke Stovall and Eli Stovall.
Funeral services were held at Union Cross Moravian Church with Rev. Don Griffin and Chaplain Glenn Davis officiating, and burial followed in the church graveyard.

Clyde B. Faw
Clyde B. Faw, 64, of Pfafftown died January 23 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was employed by Sylvester and Cockrum Inc. until illness forced his retirement.
Surviving are his wife, Marjorie Day Faw of the home; three daughters, Martha Stevens and husband Lester of East Bend, Debbie Creech and husband William of East Bend, and Jean Faw of Pfafftown; two sons, Jeffrey Faw of the home and Kent Faw and wife Michelle of East Bend; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Bobby Faw of North Wilkesboro; two sisters, Linda Walker of Boonville and Patsy Edminston of High Point; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral were held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with Rev. Randall Smith officiating, and burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park.

Erin McLain Cody
Erin McLain Cody, 20, of Clemmons, died last week after a four-year battle with severe depression. She passed away at the Wesley Foundation, where she had lived in Chapel Hill. She was the daughter of Deborah and Douglas Cody and the sister of Meghan and Adam Cody. She was a UNC junior and an honor graduate of West Forsyth High School. She was a sociology major and planned a career in social work. She wrote and was awarded a grant for work with the homeless. She was an activist for peace. She shared her spiritual life with the young people of the community of faith at the Wesley Foundation.
A memorial service was held at Clemmons United Methodist Church. A second memorial service was held at the Wesley Foundation in Chapel Hill with Jan Rivera leading the service.

Dillard Moody
Dillard Moody, 78, of Mocksville, formerly of Crab Orchard, W. Va. died January 21 after an eight-month battle with cancer. He was born March 28, 1924, in Mabscott, W. Va. During his working career, he worked as a meat cutter for several companies in West Virginia. He was an active member of Mocksville Wesleyan Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ardenia Moody; a brother, William “Buck” Moody; and two sisters, Alyese Moody and Marjorie Moody Meadows.
Surviving are two brothers, Donald Moody of Glen Burnie, Md. and Charles Moody of Sophia, W.Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial service will be held February 8 at 1 p.m. at Mocksville Wesleyan Church.

Pearl Flynn McBride
Pearl Flynn McBride, 84, of Winston-Salem died January 26 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Yadkin County to Wiley and Cora Tate Flynn. She was a member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church. She was employed by P.H. Hanes and later as a nursing assistant. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Charlie White, John Jones and Will McBride; a sister, Edna White; two brothers, Wade and Guy Flynn; and a grandson, Jeff Rivenbark.
Surviving are three daughters, Cora Lee Lane and husband Bob of Lewisville, Eleanor Rivenbark of Salisbury and Tammy Brown of Winston-Salem; three sons, Jerry White of Walkertown, Richard Jones of Greensboro and David Jones and wife Shirley of Davidson County; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Ray Flynn of Cameron; four stepgrandsons; a stepgranddaughter; a special stepgrandson, Greg McBride; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Pine Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Huffman and Rev. Otis Clampitt officiating. Burial followed at Immanuel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mary Hartle Crim
Mary Hartle Crim of Winston-Salem died at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on January 25. She was born in Forsyth County to George Frank and Lona Sapp Hartle. She was a member of Knollwood Baptist Church and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with over 40 years of service. Her husband, Hartford O’Hanlon Crim, preceded her in death.
Surviving are three nephews, James Michael Hartle of Lewisville, William James Hartle Jr. of Fayetteville and Frank Odell Hartle Jr. of Winston-Salem; four nieces, Polly Hartle Gray of Jacksonville, Fla., Peggy Hartle Burgess and Thornie Hartle Gay, both of Winston-Salem and Ruth Hartle Ayers of Kernersville; and two sister-in-laws, Leslie Kitchens Hartle of Winston-Salem and Ruth Reynolds Hartle of Lewisville.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Jack Noffsinger officiating, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.

Curtis James Caverly
Curtis James “CJ” Caverly, 21, of Pfafftown died January 23. He was born December 19, 1981, in Fargo, N.D., the son of Catherine Punton Wilson and David R. Wilson. He graduated from Surry Community College with his GED, achieving this seven months earlier than the graduation date. He loved his brothers and said “They were the best things that ever happened to him.” He had an extremely warm heart that cared about all people.
Surviving are his parents; two brothers, Matthew and Christopher Wilson; grandparents Curt and Nellie Punton and Bob and Donna Vopacke; his great-grandfather, Wayne Garrett; aunts and uncles Carol and Lew Lindeman, Shirley and Jim Voelker, John Anderson, John Wilson, Diann Rose and Deborah and Johnny Romero; and numerous cousins.
Funeral services were held at Memorial Funeral Chapel. A graveside service was held at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery in Pfafftown.

Maina Blakely James
Maina Blakely James, 70, of Winston-Salem, died January 25 at her residence. She was born to James Harrison Blakely and Lillie Hinsdale Blakely November 24, 1932, in Forsyth County. She married Jesse H. James March 24, 1951, in High Point. Her parents and five brothers preceded her in death.
Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Jesse H. James of the home; two daughters, Lorrie Holder and husband John of Clemmons and Vicky Smith and husband Ric of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Nicholas Jones, Christopher Jones, Patrick “PJ” Jones and Jacob Holder; and numerous other relatives and friends.
A graveside service was held at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with Rev. J. Marion Rector officiating.
