Mary Helen Hambright Patrick
Oct. 22, 1922 – June 5, 2006
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Mary Helen Hambright Patrick, Chairman and CEO of Patrick Yarn Mills, Inc. passed away at home in the afternoon of June 5, 2006, surrounded by family and friends. She was, for fifty-one years, the wife of the late Henry Lawrence Patrick, founder, President and CEO of Patrick Yarn Mills, Inc.
A private farewell service will be held in the courtyard garden of the Patrick home preceding a private entombment at the Patrick mausoleum. The family will receive friends for a celebration of life from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday June 9, 2006, at the H. Lawrence Patrick Senior Life and Conference Center coordinated by Harris Funeral Home. A eulogy is planned at 8 p.m.
Mary Helen Patrick was born in Kings Mountain, Oct. 22, 1922, the youngest child of the late Gilbert Dickson Hambright and Nettie Patterson Hambright. She was a descendent on both her paternal and maternal sides to pre-Revolutionary War settlers of Kings Mountain and surrounding areas.
She attended private preparatory school and graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. While at college she studied in experimental television in New York City and after graduation pursued a career in radio through the early 1940’s.
Mary Helen Hambright married her high school sweetheart and Marine Corps officer, Henry Lawrence Patrick, August 30, 1946, shortly after the allied victory of World War II. Lawrence was recalled to duty as a Marine Corps Captain during the Korean War but this time with Mary Helen by his side. While stationed at Camp LeJeune she served on the board of directors of the Officers Wives Club and as Chairman of the Second Armored Amphibian Tank Battalion’s Wives Club.
Following Lawrence’s career through Atlanta, Canton, Ohio and Camp LeJeune, Mary Helen and Lawrence returned to Kings Mountain in 1954 to take ownership of her parents business, Kings Mountain Cotton Oil Company. In 1963 she and Lawrence started Patrick Yarn Mills, Inc. where she served as vicepresident until her husband’s sudden death in August 1997, whereas Mrs. Patrick succeeded as CEO and continued to have a supportive role in the business until her death.
Always a patron of the arts, Mrs. Patrick served for eight years on the Board of Directors of The Shelby Art League and the Board of Directors of the Kings Mountain Little Theatre in its early years. She was also financially instrumental in assisting her sister Sarah Rhyne‘s Alamance County Arts Council and proud of its conversion of the historic Captain White House to a showplace for fine arts. Mrs. Patrick was herself an accomplished visual artist as well as an avid reader, world traveler and collector of antiques.
Mrs. Patrick was a member of The First Presbyterian Church and involved in many charities and projects without formal recognition. But her most heartfelt love was for her late husband. She took special pride in the naming of the Georgia Tech conference room at the School of Polymer and Textile Engineering for her husband, who earned his graduate degree at Georgia Tech. Her most locally recognizable charitable contribution, is “The Gateway to Cleveland County”, the H. Lawrence Patrick Senior Life and Conference Center.
Mrs. Patrick is survived by three children, Henry Lawrence Patrick Jr., Gilbert Hambright Patrick and wife, Janice McCants Patrick, of Kings Mountain and Barbara Patrick and husband, Steven Sadler, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; sister Sarah Hambright Rhyne of Graham; sisters-in-law Betty Patrick Merritt of Roanoke, Va. and Kitty Clausen Patrick of Charleston, S.C.; nieces, Janet Rhyne Andrews, Betsy Stowe Allen, Peggy Boss, Catherine Patrick Horton; and nephews Dr. Paul Patrick III, Dr. Christian Patrick, Dr. Russell Merritt, Patrick Merritt and David Merritt.
Donations may be made to the H. Lawrence Patrick Senior Life & Conference Center, 909 E. King St., Kings Mountain, N.C. 28086 or to the Lawrence Patrick Memorial Fund, via Fidelity Bank, 403 S. Battleground, Kings Mountain, N.C. 28086.
