Howard A. Phelps
Howard A. “Jiggs” Phelps, 80, of Clemmons died May 18 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born January 26, 1925, in Forsyth County to Robert Elmer and Nettie Wrights Phelps. He was a member of First Christian Church of Clemmons. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from Bell South Telephone Co. after 34 years of service and was preceded in death by his wife, Mae Spaugh Phelps; a brother, Ray Phelps; and a sister, Peggy Trexler.
Surviving are a son, Wayne Phelps and wife Jane of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Brenda Howell; two grandchildren, Jessica McClamrock and Travis Phelps; two stepgrandchildren, David and Miranda Huie; a brother, Robert Phelps; and a sister, Ruth Bingham.
Graveside services were held at First Christian Church of Clemmons with Rev. Stacy Abernathy officiating.
Rev. William Henry Johnson Jr.
Rev. William Henry “Bill” Johnson Jr., 85, of Yadkinville, formerly of Lewisville died May 20 at his home. He was born May 25, 1919, in Forsyth County, the only son of the late William Johnson Sr. and the late Rosa Lee Lashmit. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II and was a graduate of Piedmont Bible College. He loved his wife, children and grandchildren and he wanted to be found faithful to the Lord until the end. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Minnie Monette Johnson.
Surviving are his wife of 22 years, Cathryn Davenport Snyder Johnson of the home; children John R. Johnson of Vero Beach, Fla., Michael Snyder and wife Denise of Pinnacle, Debbi Shields and husband Ray of Pfafftown and Cheryl Dinkins and husband Tim of Yadkinville; a foster son, Royce Watlington of Vero Beach, Fla., sister Bernice Jaro of Winston-Salem; grandchildren Robert Snyder and wife Norma, Holly Snyder, Courtney Shields, Ashley Dinkins, Scott Dinkins, Lindsay Dinkins, and Marissa Dinkins; and a special friend, Russell Ballard.
Funeral services were held at Forest Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Johnson Gupton and Rev. Tom Bovender officiating. Burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
Margaret Transou Taylor
Margaret Transou Taylor, 86, of Winston-Salem died May 19 at Springwood Care Center. She was born June 6, 1918, in Forsyth County to Ralla Thomas and Lessie Zimmerman Transou. She was a member of Harmony Grove United Methodist Church and was retired from Hanes Hosiery (Sara Lee) after 28 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Taylor.
Surviving are two sons, Charles Marshall Taylor of Clemmons and Dennis Dean Taylor and wife Melba of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Charles Bryan Taylor and wife Tammy of Lewisville, Christopher William Taylor and wife Tammy of Wallburg and Derek Dean Taylor of Forbush; four great-grandchildren, Joshua Aaron Taylor, Matthew Taylor, Jordan Taylor and Kayden Taylor; three brothers, Tom Transou and James Transou of Winston-Salem and Toby Transou and wife Emily of Little River, S.C.; a sister, Mildred Wade, of Winston-Salem; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park with Rev. David G. Lookadoo officiating.
Paul Anderson Yates
Paul Anderson Yates, 76, of Lewisville died May 19 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born September 10, 1928, in Stokes County to John William Yates and Kate Marshall Yates. He lived most of his life in Forsyth County and was a member of Brookstown United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War and was retired from the State Department of Transportation after 42 years of service. He was preceded in death by a brother, William Coy Yates.
Surviving are his wife, Gloria Needham Yates; a son, Steven Anderson Yates of Lewisville; two brothers, John W. Yates and wife Elsie and Weldon Yates and wife Beth; a sister-in-law, Ann Yates; a niece, Doris Biddix; and a nephew, Alan Yates.
Funeral services were held at Brookstown United Methodist Church with Rev. Roland Barnhardt officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Blanche Josephine Anderson Hunter
Blanche Josephine Anderson Hunter, 91, of Winston-Salem died May 18 at Doris DuShane Family Care. Born in Davidson County on June 11, 1913, she was the daughter of the late William E. and Lelia Sink Anderson. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar L. “Bud” Hunter, who died in 1978; a son, Bobby Gray Hunter, of San Diego, Calif.; three brothers, R.J. Anderson of Stephenville, Texas, Richard Anderson of Ormond Beach, Fla., and William Anderson of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Goldie Creson and Sally Tucker, both of Winston-Salem; and a nephew, Tim Creson of Lewisville.
Surviving are a daughter, Martha H. O’Quinn, and husband Les of Winston-Salem; a granddaughter, Allison Gentry and husband Kenny; two great-grandchildren, Madeline Josephine and Hayden Gray of Greensboro; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Kevin Jasper officiating. Burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Susan C. Barton
Susan C. Barton, 56, of Pfafftown died May 21 at her home. She was born June 22, 1948, in Salisbury to Roy and Ruth Hendricks Collette. She was a member of Shiloh Lutheran Church in Lewisville, where she was active in the Women of the Church. She was also a member of the American Business Women’s Association and was one of the first women to join the Lion’s Club in North Carolina. She was a former vice president at People’s Bank and a business analyst for Wachovia Bank. She was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Bill Collette.
Surviving are her husband, Ronald Barton of the home; her daughter, Anna Barton Hart and husband Joseph M. of Winston-Salem; her mother of Mocksville; and a number of nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with Rev. Ray Best officiating. A graveside service followed at Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory.
William Harold Condrey
William Harold Condrey, 71, of Marion died May 19. He was born June 12, 1933, to William Herman and Texanna Sowers Condrey. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Johnny; a sister, Elsie; and his loving son, Billy.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Patsy Condrey; sons Shawn Condrey and wife Jan of Old Fort, Kevin Condrey and wife Kendra of Marion and Kyle Condrey and wife Jennifer of Clemmons; daughter Melony Foutch and husband Ben of Decatur, Ala.; daughter-in-law Patty, wife of Billy, of Glenwood; 13 grandchildren; a brother, Eddie Joe Condrey and wife Pat of Morganton; a sister, Jean Mull and husband Clyde of Morganton; and seven nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Glenwood Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Brewer and Rev. John Edwards officiating. Burial followed at McDowell Memorial Park.
Reveta Jackson Gunnell
Reveta Jackson Gunnell, 62, of Clemmons died May 21 as the result of an automobile accident. She was born October 25, 1942, in Surry County to Grover and Della Jackson Jackson. She spent 44 years in the banking business and retired as a vice president from Lexington State Bank. She was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Vernon Lee Gunnell; a daughter, Leigh Bell and husband Kevin of Pfafftown; a son, Michael Gunnell and wife Debra of Hamptonville; four grandchildren, Dillon Wallace, Parker and Nicholas Gunnell and Karsyn Bell; a sister, Mary Faye Freeman; and a brother, Odell Jackson, both of Mount Airy.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller-Kinderton Chapel with Rev. Phillip Brande officiating. A graveside service followed at Brown Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery near Westfield.
Russell Brandon Threatt
Russell Brandon Threatt, 68, of Clemmons died September 21 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born May 7, 1937, in Adams, Tenn., to Mannie and Bessie Myers Threatt. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years and retired from Bell Atlantic in 1992 with 35 years of service.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Shirley Threatt; his daughters, Donna L. Turpin and Sheri D. Price; a brother, Paul Threatt; a grandson, Tyler Price; two sons-in-law, Gene Turpin and Todd Price; and many special friends.
A memorial service was held in Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Chaplain Randy Hillman officiating.
Henry Clay Lewis
Henry Clay Lewis, 86, of Kernersville died September 19. A native of Wilson, he had been the owner/operator of the Hallmark Gift Shop in Kernersville for many years. He was a member of Bunker Hill United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Mae McDaniel Lewis.
Surviving are his stepsons, Lonnie G. McDaniel and wife Glenda of East Bend and Ronnie H. McDaniel and wife Judy of Clemmons; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Home with Rev. Neill Shaw and Rev. Patrick Snow officiating. Burial followed in Eastlawn Gardens of Memory.
Michael Brian Minton
Michael Brian Minton, 42, of Winston-Salem died September 18 in Hampton, Va. Born on June 28, 1963, in Forsyth County, he was the son of Brenda Marsh and Rondle James Minton. He served in the Army. He was a wonderful artist and loved animals. He was also of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his father; paternal grandparents and maternal grandparents.
Surviving are his mother, Brenda Craver and husband Jim of Clemmons; a special sister, Heather Craver of Clemmons; a stepbrother, Mark Craver of California; a stepsister, Penneye Craver of Charlotte; a grandmother, Flora Marsh of King; three aunts, Jeanette Taylor, Peatie Ayers and husband Grady, and Jo Woody and husband Jerry; an uncle, Douglas Marsh and wife Joyce; and many cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Bill Teague officiating. Burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
Rosemary Nevulis Reed
Rosemary Nevulis Reed, 71, wife of Norman Reed of Sherrills Ford, formerly of Winston-Salem, died September 17 at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. She was born May 5, 1934, in New Brittain, Conn., to John George and Anna Karizuski Nevulis. She married Norman L. Reed on September 12, 1953, at the age of 19. She worked as a nurse for Baptist Hospital and was a Jehovah’s Witness.
Surviving are her husband, who took care of her at their Lake Norman home since her first stroke on November 14, 2001; her brother, Leonard Nevulis of Hickory; her sister, Barbara Kosinksi of Windsor Locks, Conn.; her children, Jessie Reed of Lewisville, Cynthia Reed of Salem, Ore., Bruce Reed and wife Diana of Hickory, Timothy Reed and wife Debbie of Thomasville and Becky and husband Erich Springer of Lewisville; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A memorial service was held at Clemmons Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Helen Louise Miller
Helen Louise Miller, 81, of Lewisville died September 21 after a seven-month battle against cancer. She was born December 21, 1923, to Richard and Alma Dull of Lewisville. She was a graduate of Lewisville High School, class of 1940. She retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. in 1979 after 25 years. She was a lifelong member of Concord United Methodist Church and was active in UMW, choir, administrative council and numerous other positions. She was preceded in death by her brother, Leroy Dull.
Surviving are her husband of almost 65 years, Albert Miller; their six children, Janet Ford and husband Craig, Bonnie Prisk, Sandra Nash and husband Bruce, Ray Miller and wife Jane, Gail Phillips and husband William and Robin Miller and wife Rebecca; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, James Dull and wife Judy; sisters Nancy Cook and husband Larry and Mary Norman; and a sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Dull.
Funeral services were held at Concord United Methodist Church in Lewisville. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Margie Spach Roberts Mosley
Margie Spach Roberts Mosley, 85, of Bradford Village West died there September 19. She was born November 1, 1919, in Forsyth County to the late Harvey S. Spach and Virgie Hartman Spach. She lived in Forsyth County her entire life and was of the Moravian faith. She was preceded in death by both of her husbands, Franklin Eugene “Gene” Roberts Sr. and Ernest Clay Mosley; and a son, Franklin Eugene (Pedro) Roberts Jr.
Surviving are a daughter, Shelvia J. Wise of Kernersville; two sons, Harry L. Roberts of Kernersville and Jerry R. Roberts of Lewisville; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters; and a brother.
A graveside service was held at Woodland Cemetery.
Earl Winston Clopton Sr.
Earl Winston Clopton Sr., 59, of Lewisville died September 20 at Chapel Hill Medical Center of complications of nonalcoholic cirrhosis and liver transplant surgery. He was born July 10, 1946, in Gaston County to the late James and Mazel Clopton. Earl attended West Forsyth High School and served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietname War. He was employed with the Sheriff’s Department of Forsyth County until 1980. At that time, he moved to Florida working in the car sales business. He moved back to Winston-Salem in the early ‘90s and was employed at Parkway Ford as a finance manager and Yadkin Valley Motors as sales manager. He earned numerous awards in the automotive industry. During the year 2003, he became the Legends Semi Pro State Champion in the dirt division, driving his Legends racecar. He loved being a racecar owner and NASCAR racing. He was a member of Clemmons Moravian Church.
Surviving are his wife, Martha P. Clopton; four children, Earl Winston “Winn” Clopton Jr. of Florida, Lynn O’Donnell and husband Dan of California, R. Wayne Hege Jr. and wife Martha of Winston-Salem and Chris Hege and wife Christine of Lewisville; three grandchildren, Kayla, Abe and Hope; and special friends Harold and Joyce Davis of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Clemmons Moravian Church with Pastor Ray Burke and Dr. Henry May officiating. Burial followed in the church graveyard.
Catherine Bowden Highsmith
Catherine Bowden Highsmith, 89, of Clemmons died September 22 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born April 27, 1916, in Virginia to the late Raleigh R. and Sarah Matthews Bowden. She was a member of Macedonia Moravian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Highsmith; a brother, Raleigh R. Bowden Jr.; and a niece, Christy Lynn Highsmith.
Surviving are a daughter, Ann Highsmith Hillebrand of Advance; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Hillebrand of Mocksville and Ashlyn Hillebrand Montgomery and husband Richard A. of Advance; three great-grandchildren, Catie, Alex and Daniel; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services wereheld at Macedonia Moravian Church with Rev. Roger Kimball officiating. Burial followed in the church graveyard.
Gayle C. Brown
Gayle C. Brown, 69, of Winter Haven, Fla. died September 24 at Winter Haven Hospital. She was born April 18, 1936, in Winston-Salem and moved to Winter Haven in 1968. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis D. “Willie” Brown; a daughter, Tara Dawn Murray, and a brother, Willie Reid Clifton Jr.
Surviving are three sons, Willis D. “Billy” Brown Jr. of Winter Haven, Bobby E. Thompson Jr. of Winston-Salem and Steven Craig Thompson of Kernersville; a daughter, Beverly Gayle Hill and husband Scott of Kernersville; a brother, Grady Clifton of Clemmons; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Oak Ridge Funeral Care in Winter Haven.
Mary R. Osborne
Mary R. Osborne, 73, of Pfafftown died September 21. She was born November 28, 1931, in Meadowview, Va. She was a chef at the Winston-Salem Children’s Home and retired with 21 years service.
Surviving are her children, Peggy Diane Cole and husband David Lee of Yadkinville, Paul M. Osborne Sr. and wife Marsha D. of Mount Airy and Ronnie G. Osborne of Pfafftown; brothers George Reynolds of Norfolk, Va., Jake Reynolds of Stoneville, Wallace Reynolds of Winston-Salem and T.J. Reynolds of Bristol, Va.; sisters Francis Bebber and Betty Stallard, both of Bristol, Va; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held in Parklawn Memorial Park with Rev. Sandra Bovender officiating.
Sarah Ruth Daniel Clark
Sarah Ruth Daniel Clark, 78, of Mocksville died September 19 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She was born January 21, 1927, in Davie County to the late Henry Milton and Jenia Coble Daniel. She was retired from Crown Wood Products. She was a lifelong member of Liberty United Methodist Church, where she had been active in all parts of church activities and business. She was a charter member of Mocksville Garden Club and was an avid flower gardener. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Lloyd Clark on March 15, 2002; and a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Edith and Henry Eller.
Surviving are a daughter, Teresa C. Lowry and husband Bill of Clemmons; a beloved granddaughter, Paige Snider and fiance Michael Carter; a brother, Robert Daniel and wife Velma, all of Mocksville; five nephews, Michael Eller, Mark Daniel, Greg Daniel, Tim Daniel and Andrew Daniel; an “adopted” second daughter, Sylvia Vestal; and three close friends, Carol Spry, Peggy Tutterow and Mildred James.
A committal service was held at Liberty United Methodist Church Cemetery. A memorial service was held in the church with Rev. Mark Evans and Dr. John Andrews officiating.
Ruth Ellen Viars
Ruth Ellen Viars, 91, of Clemmons died September 23. She was born in Dickenson County, Va., one of 16 children of Chrisley and Cora Reese Lambert. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Viars; her son, Darris Viars; and several brothers and sisters.
Surviving are her daughters, Mary Kiser and husband Denver of Clemmons and Anna Kline and husband James of Crown Point, Ind.; two sisters, Minnie Phillips of Abingdon and Elsie Green of Wise; grandsons, Michael Kiser and wife Helene of Purcellville, Va., Rev. Steve Viars and wife Chris of Lafayette, Ind., and Jeffrey Kline of Griffith, Ind.; granddaughters, Nancy Rea and husband David of Clemmons, Sharon Lewellen and husband Lane of Wheatfield, Ind., Ruth Ann Viars of Blountville and Marla Warren of Holbert, Ind.; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon with Rev. Steve Viars officiating. Burial followed in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
