Brenda Kaye Green
Brenda Kaye Green, known as “Peaches,” 42, of Clemmons died August 6 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was a native of Winston-Salem and a former member of Mount Calvary Holiness Church.
Surviving are three children, Lequille Green, Larry S. Baker and Kareasha Green; her father, Sherman Green, and her stepmother, Robette Green, with whom she lived; two sisters, Mary Mims and Pamela Moultrie, both of Winston-Salem; four brothers, Sherman Green and wife Mattie, James Green and wife Delores and Sherman Littlejohn, all of Winston-Salem, and Reginald Green and wife Elizabeth of Charlotte; and a host of aunts, uncles and other relatives and friends.
A private memorial service was held.

Earl Vester Moore
Earl Vester Moore, 64, of Asheboro died August 4 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born September 1, 1939, to Jesse Moore and Lora Mishie Garner. A native of Moore County, he was retired from Sears after 32 years of service. After retirement he went to work with First Bank as a courier. He was a member of Pisgah United Methodist Church, where he was adult Sunday school teacher and lay leader.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Auman Moore of the home; a daughter, Dr. Rachel Moore Hupfeld and husband Bryan of Clemmons; a son, Jesse Moore of the home; and a sister, Agnes Moore Smith and husband Cecil of Asheboro.
Funeral services were held at Pisgah United Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Foust, and burial followed in the church cemetery.

Dora King Blackburn
Dora King Blackburn, 98, formerly of Pfafftown, died August 5 at Silas Creek Manor in Winston-Salem, after a stay of eight years. She was born April 1, 1906, in Rockingham County, Reidsville, to the late Julius and Mary Ratliff King. She was married to Gus “G.W.” Blackburn in 1925, who preceded her in death in 1984. They resided in Brookstown, now known as Pfafftown. She became a member of Bethlehem AME Zion Church at a very early age, where she served in many offices: deaconess board, Leader of Leaders, Sunday school teacher, missionary department and altar guild (floral club). Her Christian convictions were very strong and she loved her fellow man. She worked diligently as a Christian, always ready and willing to serve. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Addie Parker of Browns Summit, Elizabeth Helem of Gibsonville and Ella Glenn Lewis of Charlotte; and a brother, William King of Reidsville.
Surviving are four nieces, Pauline G. Blount of Pfafftown, Catherine Blackburn of Winston-Salem, Geneva Kahateeb of Gibsonville and Louise Blackwell of Reidsville; a nephew, Robert L. Helem and wife Madie of Laurinburg; other nieces and nephews; a dear friend, Nicie Lambeth of Pfafftown; her extended family, Michael Jennings and family of Louisville, Ky., Joseph A. Horne of Aiken, S.C., Peggy and Dick Carswell of Orlando, Fla., Tommy Jennings of Winston-Salem; and a host of other family and friends.
Funeral services were held at Bethlehem AME Zion Church in Pfafftown with Rev. Alvin E. Damon, pastor, and Rev. Robert Bailey, eulogist, officiating.

Maude Gentry
Maude Gentry, 93, died August 4 at Homestead Health Care in Winston-Salem. She was born and raised on a farm in the Mount Olive Community of Stokes County. On June 9, 1911, she was born the daughter of Oscar T. and Carrie Mae Bennett Gentry. She was a longtime member of Mount Olive Baptist Church and worked for many years at Forsyth Medical Center. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Irene G. Smith, and a brother, Robah Gentry.
Surviving are a sister, Elsie Mae Gentry Mabe of Winston-Salem; a niece, Kathy Mabe Thompson of Lexington; two nephews, Harold Gaynor Mabe of Pfafftown and Conrad Mabe and wife Bernice of Lewisville; three great-nieces and great-nephews; and four great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Hall with Pastor Randy Roberts officiating, and burial followed in Mount Olive Baptist Church Cemetery.

James Crook McLain
James Crook “J.C.” McLain, 76, of Thomasville died August 1 at his residence. He was born August 31, 1927, in Kingsport, Tenn., a son of the late Jacob Claude McLain and Sina LaRue Crook McLain. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp, serving during World War II. He was a former teacher and coach with Thomasville High School. He also coached Little League football and baseball. He was a retired personnel manager with Gray Concrete and Pipe Co. of Thomasville. He was a member of Thomasville Masonic Lodge 214 A.F. & A.M., the Oasis Shrine, Scottish Rites and the Chair City Shrine Club. He was a former member of the Thomasville Jaycees and Thomasville Lions Club and was past president of the Thomasville Civitans. He was a former member of Colonial Country Club. He organized the “Old Dogs Club” for former Thomasville High School athletes and served on the board of the Thomasville school system, the Thomasville Recreation Commission and the first Thomasville Human Relations Commission. He served on the first Davidson County Economic Development Commission. He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church. On August 15, 1949, he was married to Nancy Jane Nance. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Alfred Lee McLain.
Surviving are his wife of the home; his daughters, Mary Mills and husband Bruce of the home and Janie Phillips and husband Jim of Clemmons; a son, Bill McLain and wife Cindy of Thomasville; a sister, Gloria Faye Nash of Clarksville, Va.; a brother, Clyde D. McLain and wife Irma of Thomasville; and his grandchildren, Jason Mills, Jamie Mills and wife Beth, Jake Mills, Megan McLain, Erin Phillips, Allison Phillips and Catherine Phillips.
A memorial service was held at Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Ed Biggers and Rev. Peggy Finch officiating.

Rosalie P. Harvey
Rosalie P. Harvey, 77, of Bermuda Terrace (Meadowbrook of Davie) died August 5 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born July 16, 1927, in Forsyth County to James P. and Clara M. Powell. She was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Conrad E. Harvey Sr.
Surviving are two daughters, Marie James and husband George of Clemmons and Cecilia Sloan and husband Tim of Mocksville; a son, Conrad Harvey Jr. and wife Sheryl of Greensboro; two grandchildren, Tim Sloan Jr. and Amanda Sloan of Mocksville; two step-grandchildren, Lindsey Nisbitt and Kristen Dunford of Greensboro; and a step-great-grandchild, Hunter Nisbett of Greensboro.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Main Street Funeral Home with Father Conall McHugh officiating, and burial followed at Parklawn Memorial Park.

John Lee Coffee Jr.
John Lee Coffee Jr., 71, of Pfafftown died at his residence August 8. He was born in Thomasville on December 22, 1932, to John Lee Coffee Sr. and Flora Pauline Vick Coffee. He retired as a supervisor in the shipping department of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and was a member of Old Town Baptist Church. He was a past board member of the Autism Society of North Carolina and received Parent Advocate of the Year award in 1992. He was an avid golfer and worked at area golf courses as a ranger.
Surviving are his wife, Rebecca “Becky” Gentry Coffee of the home; a son, John Lee Coffee III of Winston-Salem; a sister, Ann Beard of Thomasville; a brother, David Stephen Coffee of California; two nieces; and two nephews.
Funeral services were held at Old Town Baptist Church with Dr. Ricky D. Speas, Rev. Keith Fortenberry and Rev. Levy Goodrich officiating. Burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.

Rev. M. Alvin Latham
Rev. M. Alvin Latham, 70, of Pfafftown died July 31 at his residence. Born in Sevier County, Tenn., on November11, 1933, he was the son of the late Michael and Mary Jane Hembree Latham. He was an ordained Methodist minister of the Western N.C. Conference of the United Methodist Church. He attended Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, the Grange and was a board member of the John Wesley Camp Meeting in High Point. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Elaine Craven Latham; five brothers; and four sisters.
Surviving are a son, Jonathan Latham and wife Jennifer of New York; two daughters, Letha Latham Burrow of Gibsonville and Michele Latham of Winston-Salem; a brother, Joe Latham and wife Carolyn of Ohio; three sisters, Ruth Maughn and Faye Fast of Ohio and Helen Bales and husband Russell of Tennessee; three grandchildren, John Wayne Pinnix II of Arizona, Dustin Michael Driver of Gibsonville and David Michael Latham of New York; three sisters-in-law, Blanche, Irene and Tisha Latham; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the Fulton United Methodist Church in Advance with Rev. Karl Kelly, Rev. Ardis Payne, Rev. Glenn Stevens and Rev. Mark Jensen officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Katie Earline Granger Morgan
Katie Earline Granger Morgan, 71, of Winston-Salem died August 3 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Forsyth County on July 6, 1933, to Charles Brown and Eulila McCullough Granger. She was a member of Advent Moravian Church for 55 years. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Sadie E. Granger, Ruby Williams and Rosa Mae Money; and a brother, Walter Granger.
Surviving ar eher husband of 50 years, William J’Van of the home; a son, James David Morgan of Durham; two brothers, Roy B. Granger of Clemmons and E.G. Granger and wife Geraldine of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Advent Moravian Church with Rev. Tripp May officiating, and burial followed in Parklawn Memorial Park.

Roy Dillard Dawson
Roy Dillard Dawson, 77, of Pfafftown died August 4 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born October 1, 1926, in Cana, Va., to the late Jack Claude Dawson and Louzanie Harrell Dawson. He was a service-station owner for 35 years and a U.S. Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Mamie Dawson, Kathleen Draughn and Aravaley Overby; and a brother, Junior Dawson.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Inman Dawson of Pfafftown; two sons, Stephen Dawson and wife Anita of Sugar Land, Texas, and Dennis Dawson and wife Lisa of Pfafftown; five grandsons, Phillip, Geoffrey, Cooper, Montana and Brooks Dawson; and a brother, Lester Dawson of Mount Airy.
Funeral services were held at Simmons Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Stewart Mauck and Rev. Jonathan Rogers officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.

Worth Monroe Johnson
Worth Monroe Johnson, 86, of Clemmons died December 12 . Born in Surry County July 12, 1918, he was the son of the late Emma Holland Johnson and John Leonard Johnson. He was a very active member at South Fork Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir. He was a deacon and Sunday school teacher through the years before becoming a member of Calvary Baptist Church. One of the first three draftees from Surry County, he served in the U.S. Army in World War II in the European Theater with the 106th Infantry Division. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, where he was captured December 23, 1943, and held prisoner at Stalag 4B in Germany. He was rated for a sharp shooter .30-caliber carbine and an M-1 .30-caliber rifle. He was awarded an EAMET campaign medal, two Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct Medal, an American Defense Service Medal and an Infantry Badge. He was very proud of the opportunity to serve his country. He could not attend church because of ill health but continued to support his church and his fellow man with love, prayers and contributions. He was an avid gardener; additionally, he enjoyed fishing, reading and being outdoors.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Ree Bodenheimer Johnson of the home; a son, Tony Johnson and wife Jane of Clemmons; two grandchildren, Brian Patrick Johnson and wife Yvonne of Clemmons and Kelli Patrice Johnson, also of Clemmons; two great-grandsons, Jared Anthony and Luke Aaron Johnson; a brother, Roy H. Johnson, and wife Margurite of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Lula J. Johnson and Eva M. Johnson, both of Elkin; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Guy Hipp and Joey Spry officiating. Burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory with military honors performed by District 11 Memorial Honor Guard of Clemmons.

Patrick D. Lowrey
Patrick D. Lowrey, 49, of Clemmons died December 10 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born June 7, 1955, in Henderson, TN. He was of the Baptist faith and served his country in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim D. and Sybil B. Lowrey; his grandparents, Jeanette and Frank Scarbrough; and his father-in-law, Ernest T. Meadows.
Surviving are his wife of 18 years, Donna Lowrey of the home; his mother-in-law, Eva Meadows of Winston-Salem; his sister-in-law, Jean Mills of Winston-Salem; his two sisters, Mary Hamrick of Roswell, GA, and Susan Winkler of Gulf Port, LA; and his brother, Michael Lowrey of Milwaukee, WI.
Funeral services were held at Vogler and Sons Main Street Chapel.

Eliza Rebecca Faulkner Upchurch
Eliza Rebecca Faulkner Upchurch, 87, of Lambsburg, VA, widow of Jasper Upchurch, died December 8 at her home. She was born May 13, 1917, in Surry County to Bob and Minnie Beamer Faulkner. She was a faithful 50 year member of Lambsburg Fellowship Tabernacle and was also the oldest charter member. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Jerome, Ralph, Reed and Ramon Faulkner; a half sister, Zula Hawks Stone; two grandsons, Chris Haynes and Michael Bryant; a granddaughter, Misti Triplet; and a great-grandson, Travis Upchurch.
Surviving are eight children, Elmer Upchurch of the home, Albert and June Upchurch, Loretta Smith, Thelma and Corbet Bryant and Nelma and Johnny Robinson, all of Lambsburg, Alma and Russell Haynes of Clemmons, Elizabeth Williams of Kernersville, and Wilma and Arnold Triplet of Burlington; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Lambsburg Fellowship Tabernacle with Rev. Donald Bryant andRev. Bob Phipps officiating. Burial followed in the Edwards-Upchurch Family Cemetery.

Cora Lowe Snow
Cora Lowe Snow, 81, formerly of Winston-Salem, died December 8 at Forsyth Medical Center. Born in Alleghany County on March 24, 1923, she was the daughter of Rausy Frost and Rev. Troy Elijah Lowe. She was a member of Hanes Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Dewey B. Snow; two brothers, Herman and Roy Lowe; and a sister, Nettie Wilson.
Surviving are two daughters, Brenda Miller and husband Nick of Walnut Cove and Martha Tysinger and husband David of Winston-Salem; and seven grandchildren, Glenda and Skip Daniels, Donna and Todd Phinney, Teresa and Billy Parsons, Anita Miller, Ellen and Keith Garrell, Leon and Sandy Tysinger and Steven and Kim Tysinger; six great-grandchildren, Adam and Allison Garrell, Christopher and Madison Phinney and Haleigh Tysinger and Justin Daniels; three sisters, Imogene Howard, Helen Doby and Sue Gussman; two brothers, Ted Lowe and Earl Lowe; and a special friend, Yvette Deroy of Clemmons Village II.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Brother Randy Wall, Brother Gary Blalock and Rev. Ron Groce officiating. Burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons.

Claudia Jessup Southern
Claudia Jessup Southern, 72, of Belews Creek died December 10 at Forsyth Medical Center after six and one-half years of declining health. She was born January 4, 1932, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late Grace Mathews and James Melburn Jessup.
Surviving are her husband, James Southern of the home; a daughter, Wanda Fisher and husband Bob of Belews Creek; a grandson, Richard Dezarn and wife Linda of East Bend; a granddaughter, Brandi Dezarn of King; two sisters, Dorothy Berry of Clemmons and Evelyn Wright of Union, SC; two brothers, Lewis Jessup and Tommy Noah, both of Winston-Salem; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel with Rev. Roger Pennix and Rev. Tommy Holden officiating. Burial followed in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown.

Prudence Queen Davis
Prudence “Bobbi” Queen Davis, 99, of Winston-Salem died December 5 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born December 26, 1904, in Statesville to Robert Killian and Jenny Sloan Queen. She was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church, where she was active as long as her health permitted. She retired from Hanes Hosiery in 1969 following 38 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Allie Long Davis; two brothers; and two sisters.
Surviving are a son, Robert T. Davis and wife Mary Jane of Clemmons; two grandchildren, Carol Davis Brothers of Winston-Salem and Gary Davis of Pebble Beach, Calif.; three great-grandchildren, Douglas Brothers and wife Andrea, and Steven Brothers of Winston-Salem and David Brothers and wife Amy of McKinney, TX; four great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Grace Jenkins, of Lehigh Acres, FL; two stepgrandchildren, Richard Guyer and wife Sybil of Gastonia and Mark Guyer and wife Pam of Birmingham, AL; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Mineral Springs Baptist Church with Dr. Cecil Cave and Rev. James A Cohn officiating. Burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park.

Maxie Angell Doub
Maxie Angell Doub, 85, of Pfafftown died December 10 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She was born September 26, 1919, in Yadkin County to Emory and Julia Nichols Angell. She was a member of Doub’s Chapel United Methodist Church. She was a charter member and the first president of the Old Richmond Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxillary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Homer Doub.
Surviving are a son, Joseph Donald Doub and wife Karen Sue of Denver, CO; a daughter, Christine D. Walls and husband Ronnie, of Winston-Salem; and two grandchildren, Paige Elizabeth Doub and Joel Donald Doub, both of Denver.
Funeral services were held at Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend with Rev. Dwight Cartner officiating, and burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park Cemetery.

Bessie Anderson Southern
Bessie Anderson Southern, 82, of Pfafftown died following a heart attack on December 3 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born January 18, 1922, and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 35 years of employment. She enjoyed volunteering for the King Outreach Ministry and was always available to help anyone in need. Her Christian devotion was complete. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jasper and Elvira Anderson; two sisters, Sarah Anderson and Leota Hawks; and five brothers, John, Jim, Lee, Buford and Worth Anderson.
Surviving are her son, Stanley Madison Southern and grandson Kyle Griffin Southern, both of Winston-Salem; her sisters, Della Bodenhamer and Bea Merritt, both of King, Pat Puckett of Winston-Salem, and Ann Mabe and Nettie Anderson, both of Pfafftown; and many nieces, nephews and close friends.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel.

Robert Calvin Ryan Jr.
Robert Calvin “R.C.” Ryan Jr., 81, of Winston-Salem died December 3 at his residence. He was born August 15, 1923, in Forsyth County to Ruth Sink Ryan and Robert Calvin Ryan Sr. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Hope Moravian Church and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company with 36 years of service. He enjoyed taking his grandchildren fishing and loved woodworking. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Blake West and Eleanor Kimel and a daughter-in-law, Hazel Ryan.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Frances Johnson Ryan of the home; two children, Calvin Ryan and wife Phyllis of Olympia, WA, and Sandra Mills and husband Mark of Greenville, SC; two grandchildren, Lucas and Amy Mills; two sisters, Helen West of Winston-Salem and Katherine Hunter of Lewisburg, WV; and three brothers, Howard Ryan of Clemmons, Forrest Ryan of Winston-Salem and Wayne Ryan of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Hope Moravian Church with Rev. David Merritt officiating, and burial followed in the church graveyard.

Margaret Hendrix Whitaker
Margaret Hendrix Whitaker, 84, formerly of Winston-Salem, died December 5 at Bermuda Village, where she had been a resident for the past two years. She was born in Davie County on February 13, 1920, to Haywood and Magdeline Cornatzer Hendrix. She was a member of Dulin United Methodist Church and had retired from Western Electric Co. with 30 years of service. She was raised in Mocksville and moved to Winston-Salem in 1949. She was preceded in death by her former husband, Jim Frank Whitaker.
Surviving are her brother. H.R. Hendrix and wife Modene; niece Judy Ferner and husband Jack of Bermuda Run; great-nephew Bryant Jarvis and wife Tammy and great-great-nephew Bryant Joe Jarvis; niece Shelby Nichols and husband Sam of Bermuda Run West; great-nephews Robert Carl Nichols and Sam Nichols Jr. and great-niece Jean Ward; niece Patricia Jarvis and husband Joe of Clemmons; great-niece and great-nephew Julie and Jonathan Jarvis; and nephew Robin Hendrix of Atlanta.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with Rev. Ray O’Ferrell and Rev. David Smith officiating. Burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
