James Potter
Died Jan. 5, 2007
GAFFNEY, S.C. — Mr. James “Frog” Albert Potter, 77, of 104 Stroup Estate Road, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital.
A native of Cliffside, Mr. Potter was the son of Johnny P. and Eula Seals Potter and the husband of Minnie Peal Stroup Potter. He was retired from Duke Power and was an Army veteran serving in the Korean Conflict. Mr. Potter was a member of Draytonville Baptist Church where he was a former deacon.
Mr. Potter was preceded in death by a brother, Gene Potter.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Potter is survived by four sisters, Ruth Walker and Ava McGinnis, both of Mooresboro, and Myrtle Ruppe and Vivian Greene, both of Gaffney; numerous nieces and nephews as well as great-nieces and -nephews, and godchild, Brittany Mann of Gaffney.
Visitation: The family will receive friends Tuesday from 3 to 4 p.m. at Blakely Funeral Home.

Bill Grissom
Died Jan. 5, 2007
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. William “Bill” Richard Grissom, 66, of 204 North Roxford Road, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, at Hospice in Shelby.
Mr. Grissom was the retired owner of Goforth Plumbing, a member of First Presbyterian Church in Kings Mountain where he was the former Sunday school superintendent, a deacon, an elder and a choir member. He was also a past president of the Kings Mountain Kiwanis Club, a former member of the Jaycees and served two terms as a city commissioner in Ward 5 for the city of Kings Mountain. He coached football, baseball and was on the film crew for 39 years filming Kings Mountain High School football. He attended Clemson University.
Mr. Grissom was a son of the late William Henry and Mary “Willie” McCarter Grissom. In addition to his parents, a son, William Thomas Grissom, preceded him in death.
Mr. Grissom is survived by his wife, Claudia Goforth Grissom, daughter, Sondra G. Wilson and husband, Steve, all of Kings Mountain; brother, Steve Grissom of Florence, S.C.; grandchildren, Brandon Dixon and Meagan Gail Wilson of Kings Mountain; and great-grandchild, Wesley Gage Dixon of Kings Mountain.
Visitation: The family will receive friends Monday following the memorial service in the Patrick House.

Joe Hamrick
June 1, 1929 - Jan. 5, 2007
SHELBY — Mr. Joe Sylvanus Hamrick, 77, of 825 Ed Hamrick Road passed away Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, at home surrounded by his family.
A native of Cleveland County, Mr. Hamrick was a son of the late Ed and Olivia Gardner Hamrick. A devoted Christian, committed husband and loving father and grandfather, he was a graduate of Fallston High School where he was a member of the “Fallston Flying Five’ basketball team. He also graduated from Gardner-Webb College where he was a two-sport standout in basketball and baseball. He continued his education at North Carolina State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in animal husbandry. After college he played basketball, on various teams, and semi-pro baseball. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.
A lifelong member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, he served as a deacon, adult men’s Sunday school teacher, choir member, RA counselor, cemetery supervisor and on various other committees. One committee close to his heart was the Building and Fundraising Committee for the new fellowship building and recreational facilities.
Mr. Hamrick was a promoter and supporter of South Mountain Baptist Camp, where during his tenure as a RA counselor he annually took a group of youth to summer camp. He also served as the South Mountain Baptist Camp Committee chairman for a number of years.
He retired from AgFirst Farm Credit in 1986 after 30 years of service, most of which was spent as an appraiser. He was known as a “Friend of the Farmer”. His love for farming and the preservation of farmland continued after his retirement. He served as a sponsor for the Burns High School FFA and was a member and past president of the Cleveland County Cattleman’s Association. In 1996 he received the Cleveland County Cattleman Award. He also worked in the Cleveland County Fair livestock department and served on the board of directors for the Cleveland County Fair Association.
His life was marked by hard work. Whatever the task, Joe served faithfully, willingly and tirelessly before declining in health.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Tom, Scott, Keslar and Glenn Hamrick; and two sisters, Velva Hamrick and Louise Harris.
Mr. Hamrick is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lou Jean Dedmon Hamrick; a son, Alan Hamrick of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Mike Bryant of Snellville, Ga.; two sisters, Ruth Beam of Shelby and Rachel Ballard of Gastonia and four grandchildren, Matthew, Stephen, Lauren and Jonathan Bryant.
Visitation: The family will receive friends today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home.
Funeral: Monday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, the body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service

SHELBY — Mrs. Lucy Mildred Lovelace Jackson, 93, of Shelby, formerly of Mooresboro passed away Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007, at Century Care of Shelby.
A native of Cleveland County, Mrs. Jackson was a retired sales clerk, a homemaker, and an avid quilt maker.
Mrs. Jackson was preceded in death by her father, James Gardus Lovelace, her mother Mary C. Jones Lovelace, and her stepfather William Samuel Lovelace. She was also preceded in death by her husband Broadus Howard “Doc” Jackson and two brothers Emmitt Lovelace and Ernest Lovelace.
Mrs. Jackson is survived by two sons, Dr. James Jackson and wife, Sallie, of Raleigh, Wray Jackson and wife, Linda, of Shelby and a daughter, Kathleen Tomblin-Woch and husband, Bob, of Rutherfordton. Also surviving are two brothers, Evans Lovelace of Ellenboro and Eddie Yates Lovelace of Gaffney, S.C.; five grandchildren Myra T. Yelton, Michael W. Tomblin, Joe Jackson, Andy Jackson and Wright Jackson; and five great-grandchildren, Emily Yelton, Claire Yelton, Amber Jackson, Ryan Jackson and Euzelia Jackson.
Visitation: The family received friends Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home.

John Hudson
Nov. 15, 1922 – Jan. 6, 2007
SHELBY — Mr. John Sparks Hudson, 84, of 2412 Easton Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, at home.
A native of Washington, N.C., Mr. Hudson was a son to the Rev. Charles F. and Helen Sparks Hudson. He completed his primary education in the Durham County School system, attended Wayne State Teacher’s College in Omaha, Neb. and the University of Iowa. He graduated from Thomas A. Edison State College in Trenton, N.J. He served in the Army Veterinary Corps in Europe during World War II and with the 239th General Hospital and the Fourth Medical Laboratory.
Mr. Hudson was an ordained deacon and church treasurer at Parkwood Baptist Church in Gastonia and a member of the Paul Wilson Sunday School class at First Baptist Church of Shelby. He was a member of Mensa and Mensa International and the Shelby Kiwanis Club. He was an active, 50-year Mason. He was a former Master of the Asheboro Masonic Lodge and a member of Gastonia Masonic Lodge 369. He was a Scottish Rite and York Rite Mason and a Noble of the Oasis Temple of the Shrine Charlotte and a past Master and past District Deputy Grand Master of the Blue Lodge.
A Certified Public Account for more than 50 years, Mr. Hudson retired as Finance Director for the City of Shelby in 1986.
Mr. Hudson is survived by his wife of 59 years, Frances Denning Hudson, sons John F. Hudson of Durham, and Albert D. Hudson M.D. and wife, Ansle S., of Cornelius. He was the proud grandfather of Hailey, Sydney and Ally Hudson of Cornelius. He is also survived by nephews Charles F. Hudson III of Palmdale, Calif., Randall S. Hudson of Woodland Hills, Calif.; goddaughters, Dr. Glenda Crawford of Burlington, Claudia McCoy of Greensboro; and special friends James Humphries and Margaret Falk of Durham and Elaine Archer of Northridge, Calif.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Drs. Douglas Boyette, Bobby Jones and Scott Lindblom and the many other caregivers who helped extend his life and time with his family.
Visitation: The family will receive friends Monday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the Ladies Parlor of First Baptist Church.

Kings Mountain — Mrs. Lena Ware McGill, 101, resident of Summitt Place, Kings Mountain, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007. A native of Cleveland County, Mrs. McGill was a daughter of the late William Alexander and Mary Caroline Anthony Ware. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, John Lowery McGill, sisters, Mrs. Minnie Phifer, Mrs. Vivian Fulton, Mrs. Mary Stroupe, Ms. Ava Ware, and brothers, Moffett, Freno and Garrison Ware.
After graduating from Kings Mountain High School, Mrs. McGill attended Erskine College. She taught school before becoming an extension agent for the county. She was a member of Erskine College Board of Trustees for 10 years and received the Mary Margaret Sullivan “Humanitarian Award” from Erskine College. She was also a member of the Kings Mountain Board of Education from 1959-1971.
Mrs. McGill was a lifetime member of Boyce Memorial ARP Church in Kings Mountain where she was active in all the church activities. She was also active in many civic organizations.
Surviving her are a number of nieces and nephews and their families.

Mary Sue Ramseur

BESSEMER CITY — Miss Mary Sue Ramseur, resident of 1702 Tryon Courthouse Road, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.
A native of Gaston County, Miss Ramseur was a daughter of the late Hillis White and Bessie Patterson Ramseur. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Merigold and brother, Robert Ramseur.
Miss Ramseur is survived by sisters Frieda and Ruby Ramseur both of Bessemer City; brother Jim Ramseur of Dallas; eight nieces and nephews and nine great-nieces and -nephews.
Miss Ramseur taught school for more than 40 years and retired from Shelby City Schools. She was a lifetime member of Long Creek Presbyterian Church in Kings Mountain where she was an active Sunday school member.
