David Roy Beshears
David Roy Beshears, 57, of Pfafftown, died January 24. He was the son of the late Alfred Ray and Bernice Johnston Beshears. He deeply loved the Lord and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was employed by Northrop Grumman Newport News Shipbuilding Co. and was very proud of the design work he was doing on the U.S. Navy’s new aircraft carrier for his country. Hewas an avid sportsman with a great love of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.
Surviving are his wife, Carole Blackwell Beshears of the home; and two daughters, Angelia Beshears and grandchildren, Ahlorah and Brandon of Pfafftown and Melissa Beshears-Davis and husband Brian and grandson Trenton of Newport News, Va.
Funeral services were held at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with Pastor Carl Miller, First Assembly of God, officiating.

Durward A. Hicks
Durward A. Hicks, 86, of Winston-Salem died January 30 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born October 24, 1917, to Silas Auborn and Lillie Gordon Hicks. He was a native of Stokes County but resided most of his life in Forsyth County. He was one of 14 children. He was a member of Waughtown Baptist Church and a retired employee of 32 years at Western Electric Co.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Frances J. Hicks of the home; a daughter, Jane H. Doty and husband Furman of Winston-Salem; a son, James A. Hicks and wife Kathy of Greensboro; four grandchildren, Robin England of Knoxville, Tenn., Allison Reid of Athens, Ga., Meredith Moore of Boone and Morgan Hicks of Greensboro; two great-grandchildren, Blake and Joshua Kerley; and two stepgreat-grandchildren, Darvin and Hogan England, all of Knoxville, Tenn.; seven sisters, Doris Spain of Lewisville, Ebah Howell of Charlotte, Eloise Zachary of Winston-Salem, Wanda Stratford and Betty Hoyle, both of Burlington, and Jerrie Pardue and Jackie Wheeler, both of Greensboro; two brothers, Odell Hicks of Kernersville and Rex Hicks of McLeansville; and cherished friends, Billy and Carolyn Beeson of Winston-Salem, along with many other special friends.
Funeral services were held at Waughtown Baptist Church with Rev. Joe McWethy and Dr. Billy Martin officiating, and burial followed in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.

Maple Justice Minton
Maple Justice Minton, 86, of Clemmons died January 28 at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons. She was born December 12, 1917, in Kentucky, the daughter of the late Hut and Minnie Compton Justice.
Surviving are her daughter, Jean Venable and husband Fred of Clemmons; a granddaughter, Veronica; and a great-granddaughter, Brooke.
A memorial service was held at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church Chapel.

James Melvin Lowery Sr.
James Melvin Lowery Sr., 60, of Winston-Salem died January 30 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He had been seriously ill for a year. He had received a kidney transplant 13 years ago, for which he was grateful. He was a longtime employee of Joe’s Landscaping in Lewisville and loved to talk about and sell plants. For the past several years he was a security guard at Centenary United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Mildred Craig Lowery, of the home; a son, James Melvin Lowery Jr., of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Denise Lowery of High Point; a brother, Ennis Lowery and wife Shirley of North Wilkesboro; two sisters, Bobbie Jean and Mary Frances; a granddaughter, Rainy Lowery of Winston-Salem; and his best friends, Harry and Janet Dinkins of Mocksville.
A graveside service was held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory with Dr. Roland Barnhardt officiating.

Benny Hixon Horton Sr.
Benny Nixon Horton Sr., 78, of Winston-Salem died January 31 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born March 22, 1925, in Cabarrus County to Reece and Sarah Carriker Horton. He was a member of Union Grove Baptist Church. He served in the Pacific during World War II in the U.S. Navy and retired from McLean Trucking Co. with over 29 years of service.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Frances B. Horton of the home; a son, Benny N. Horton Jr. and wife Lois of Clemmons; four daughters, Pat H. Willis and husband Steve of Pfafftown, Sherry H. Gaither and husband James of Winston-Salem, Ann H. Bean and husband Joe of Barnesville and Bonnie Herron and husband Joe of Brick, N.J.; three grandchildren, David Willis, April Shermer and Eric Horton; three great-grandsons, Ethan, Cole and Troy Shermer; a half-brother, Troy Campbell of Mount Holly; and his caregiver, Karen Parrish.
Funeral services were held at Union Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Ken Harris and Dr. Harold Fletcher officiating. Graveside services followed at the Gardens of Memory Mausoleum Chapel in Walkertown.

William Elvin Jones
William Elvin Jones, 89, of Belmont died January 5 at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. He was born in Tottenville, N.Y. to Welsh immingrants, the late Robert Allen and Sephora J. Jones. He pastored in Cantonville, Md., Glendale S.C., and at Clemmons First Baptist Church from September 24, 1950 to January 1962, before coming to Belmont in 1962 where he was pastor of East Belmont Baptist Church until he retired in 1979. East Belmont Baptist honored him in 2002 by naming him Pastor Emeritus. While in Belmont he was active in community affairs, especially related to youth, and was chaplain of the South Point High School Red Raider football team for 12 years. During his retirement he remained active in many area churches, serving as interim pastor or pulpit supply.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Miriam Reeves Jones; daughters Miriam Shillingsburg and husband Peter of Barnardsville, Cynthia Hardie and husband Harry of Belmont, Martha Auten and husband Mike of Belmont, and Elizabeth Whitener and husband Don of Monroe; grandchildren Elizabeth Johnson, Susan Biggerstaff, Robert Shillingsburg, George Shillingsburg, John Shillingsburg, Alice Shillingsburg, Anne Shillingsburg, Brett Auten, Angela Hutto, Allison Auten, Catherine Auten, Anna Whitener, Will Whitener; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lillian Pennington of Brookhaven, Pa.
Funeral services were held at East Belmont Baptist Church with Dr. Glenn Gunter and Rev. Don Whitener officiating, and burial followed in Greenwood Cemetery.

Doris MacIntosh Wood
Doris MacIntosh Wood, 65, of Mocksville, a former resident of Clemmons for 25 years, died February 2 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born November 24, 1938 in Philadelphia, Pa. to Donald and Mary Barr MacIntosh Sr. She was an active member of Hillsdale Baptist Church. She retired as office manager for Dr. Blount and Dr. Crowell and was Past President of the Junior Women’s Club.
Surviving are her husband, Lorin A. Wood of the home; a daughter, Mary Wood Pegram; a son, Lindon D. “Chip” Wood and wife Mitzi; three grandchildren, Madison, Dylan and Haley, all of Clemmons; and a brother, Donald MacIntosh Jr. of Wisconsin.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel with Pastor Holcomb and Pastor Chilen officiating, and burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory.

Thurman C. Moser
Thurman C. Moser, 83, died at Meadowbrook Manor Nursing Home on April 22. He was born August 27, 1920, to Robah and Hattie Moser, and was raised in Lewisville. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 30 years as a maintenance super-visor. He served during World War II with the 82nd Airborne and received the Purple Heart and the Silver Cross. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Odd Fellows Lodge. He was an active member of the South Fork community and various civic organizations. He enjoyed golf, baseball and cooking and published three cookbooks during his lifetime. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katie Crouch Moser.
Surviving are two daughters, Thurma M. Dudley and Linda M. Brewer and husband Tommy; three grandchildren, Melinda D. Odom, Jeffrey M. Dudley and Pamela D. Brewer; four great-grandchildren, Justin Odom, William Odom, Joseph Dudley and Jaclynn Dudley; two sisters, Lois Jean Carter of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Dorothy Crater of Winston-Salem; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Trinity United Methodist Church.

Ethel Elizabeth Harper Brewer
Ethel Elizabeth Harper Brewer, 97, of Clemmons died April 24. She had been in declining health for eight months. She was born November 23, 1906, in Clemmons to Mary H. and Andrew Blaine “Dock” Harper. She graduated from Clemmons High School and furthered her education at Woman’s College in Greensboro, where she received her Teacher’s Certificate. She taught fourth through seventh grades in a two-room schoolhouse at Flat Rock School. Later she taught fourth grade at Lewisville Elementary School. She decided that teaching was not her forte, and continued her education at Draughn’s Business College. She worked for 30 years at Lawyers Title Insurance Company, Forsyth County Tax Office and Standard Building & Loan in Winston-Salem. Until her eyesight failed, she enjoyed antiques, decoupage and string & metal art. She was a member of Warners Chapel Church of Christ, Ardmore United Methodist Church, a charter member of Wesley Memorial United Church in Winston-Salem, and presently a member of Clemmons United Methodist Church. She served as church historian for Wesley Memorial United Methodist and Clemmons United Methodist Church. She was instrumental in obtaining pictures of all ministers from 1920 to present at Clemmons United Methodist Church, and the pictures now adorn the walls of the History Room. She was married 61 years to Marvin E. Brewer, who preceded her in death in1988. She was also preceded in death by five siblings, Grace Harper Grose, Paul W. Harper, John Blaine Harper, Virginia Harper Tesh and Andrew B. (A.B.) Harper.
Surviving are Lieuteene Marion (Bud) Harper and Helen Harper Isaacs; her sister-in-law, Margaret Jones Harper; and brother-in-law, Ray Grose. Also many nieces and nephews survive as follow, Lynn H. Price and husband Basil of Wilmington, Del., Stephen Brewer Harper of Greenville, Bob Tesh and wife Manchel of Winston-Salem, Carolyn T. Rajacich and husband Joseph of Clemmons, Ken Harper and wife Cathy of Lexington, Kay H. Windsor and husband Mike of Clemmons, Peggy H. Harris and husband Elvin of Clemmons, Pat H. Davis of Clemmons, Linda Harper of Lexington, Steve Harper and wife Bobbie of Clemmons, Tom Harper and wife Cathy of Kernersville, Michael Harper and wife Beverly of Charleston, S.C., Bill Grose of Advance, Tim Isaacs of Dallas, Texas and Tammi I. McKinnon and husband Jeff of El Dorado, Ark. Also surviving are the following Brewer nieces and nephews, Herman Cook, Carolyn P. Lynch, Jane C. Corn, Nancy C. Welfare, Estelle P. Hill, David Raper, Ed Brewer, Lynn H. Price, Bob Brewer, Miriam B. Beauchamp, Jimmie Brewer, Steve Harper, Jimmie Raper and Rebecca B. Matthews. Many great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held at Clemmons United Methodist Church with Ministers Phillip C. Cole and Cathy K. Vlastakis officiating, and entombment followed in Westlawn Memorial Mausoleum.

Margaret Fennel Watts
Margaret Fennel Watts, 71, of Winston-Salem, died at her home April 25 after a long battle with Scleroderma. She was born March 8, 1933, in Forsyth County to Willie B. and Stacie Reid Fennel. She had retired from Wachovia Bank and was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church as long as health permitted.
Surviving are her husband, Russell A. Watts of the home; a daughter, Patricia “Tricia” Watts of Winston-Salem; a son and, Timothy Watts and wife Rosemary of Clemmons; two grandchildren, Jeremy Watts of Boone and Lauren Watts of Clemmons; a sister, Annie F. Benge of Winston-Salem; and two brothers, John R. Fennel and wife Thelma and William J. Fennel and wife Madeline, all of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held in Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Francis Smith officiating, and burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park.

James Edward Switzer Sr.
James Edward “Ed” Switzer Sr., 89, of Millers Creek died April 21 at Britthaven Nursing Home. He was born November 5, 1914, in Spartanburg County, S.C., to James Floyd and Rosalie Willis Switzer. He began his career as an agriculture teacher in Biscoe. He also taught in Morganton before coming to Wilkes County in 1950 to serve as a veteran’s instructor. He later taught at Wilkesboro High School and Wilkes Central High School until 1966. He was one of the original staff members of Wilkes Community College, serving as director of Adult Education. He worked in Winston-Salem with the Experience in Self-Reliance before returning to North Wilkes High School, where he remained until his retirement in 1982. He also served as president of the Wilkes County Retired Teachers Association. He was an amateur radio operator and an avid photographer. He took action and club shots for the Green & Gold yearbook at Wilkes Central for many years. During his retirement he enjoyed many hobbies including horticulture. He spent many hours working on his family genealogy, sending out newsletters to family members nationwide. He was a member of Wilkesboro Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Allene M. Switzer, on January 7, 2004; an infant daughter, Martha Carol; a sister, Polly S. Lee; and two brothers, Dean Switzer and Dave Switzer.
Surviving are a daughter, Margaret Rogers and husband Bob of Lewisville; a son, James Edward Switzer Jr. and wife Jan of Carlsbad, Calif.; two grandsons, James Edward Switzer III of Oceanside, Calif., and Robert Andrew Rogers of Matthews; three granddaughters, Heidi S. Smith and Meredith S. Bock, both of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Melissa R. Richardson of Clemmons; five great-grandchildren, Kolyn Switzer, Tyler Thrower, Summer Smith, Isabella Bock and Blake Smith; a sister, Wilma Caldwell of Roebuck, S.C.; and a brother, Rev. Willis H. Switzer and wife JoAnn of Franklin, Va.
Funeral services were held at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel in North Wilkesboro with Rev. Ralph Stanley and Rev. Ken Pardue officiating, and burial followed in Scenic Memorial Gardens in Wilkesboro.

Sammy Willis Sherrill
Sammy Willis Sherrill, 78, of Pfafftown died April 19 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born November 18, 1925, in Winston-Salem to Jessie Robey and Mary Sherrill. He was a member of Bethania Moravian Church and the West Bend Masonic Lodge. He was a retired member of the Vienna Fire Department. He retired from Western Electric after 38 years of service and was presently employed at Beroth Oil Co. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was preceded in death by a brother, Rufus Sherrill, and two sisters, Mary Bostic and Mellie Richardson.
Surviving are his wife, Lucy Neal Hunter Sherrill of the home; two daughters, Sandra Pingho and husband George of Pfafftown, and Mary Angela Sizemore and husband Mark of Advance; two sons, David Sherrill of Pfafftown, and John Sherrill and wife Sylvia of East Bend; 10 grandchildren, Sarah, Catherine, Meredith and Sam Pingho of Pfafftown, Ashley, Christopher and Nicholas Sizemore of Advance, and Paige, Nathan and Sherrill of East Bend; and a sister, Christine Marano and husband John of Tacoma, Wash.
Funeral services were held at Bethania Moravian Church with Rev. N. Wayne Byerly officiating, and burial followed in the church graveyard.

Daisy Marion Wilkins
Daisy Marion Wilkins, 89, formerly of Boonville, died April 21 at Meadowbrook Terrace of Davie. She was born August 23, 1914, in Surry County to Cornelieus Hampton and Nancy Ann Cave Wilkins. She was a devoted Christian, living her life in service for her Lord. She loved gardening her flowers, going to church and singing, especially her favorite hymn, “Goodbye World Goodbye.” She was a member of Jonesville Church of God. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clyde Hampton Wilkins Sr., in 1977; and a son, C.H. Wilkins.
Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Lou Martin and husband Ralph of Clemmons; six grandchildren, Cynthia Lynn Lupo of Winston-Salem, Eddie Wilkins of Winston-Salem, Toni Cain and husband Bill of King, Ricky Martin of Clemmons, Jeffrey Martin and wife Cindy of Winston-Salem and Lori Ann Martin and husband Jim of Winston-Salem; four great-grandchildren, Jason Cain, Steve Martin, Angie Cain and Alex Martin; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Gentry Family Chapel in Yadkinville with Rev. Bobby Dishman and Rev. Phillip King officiating, and burial followed in the Boonville Cemetery.

Helen Louise Ward Phillips
Helen Louise Ward Phillips, 83, of Meadowbrook Manor in Clemmons died April 24. She was born in Guilford County on March 17, 1921, to James “J.B.” Boyd and Mazie Brame Ward. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy D. Phillips.
Surviving are a daughter, Robin Smithson and husband Greg of Winston-Salem; two sons, Jimmy Gales and Chris Gales; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Paul Ward of Secca, S.C.
A cryptside service was held at Lakeview Memorial Park in Greensboro.

Alice Ruth Doub Goins
Alice Ruth Doub Goins, 78, of Pfafftown died at Forsyth Medical Center on April 19. She was born in Pfafftown on September 11, 1925, to John Fletcher and Alma Tate Doub. She was a dedicated lifelong member of Elm Grove United Methodist Church. She was predeceased by her husband, James Abraham Goins; and two sisters, Margaret Lee Doub and Nell Moore.
Surviving are two daughters, Judy Dewar of Denver, N.C., and Shirley Farmer and husband Raymond of Pfafftown; a son, Ricky Goins and wife Lora of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Darrell Dewar of Charlotte, Danyele Smith and husband Jimmy of Denver, N.C., Darlene Farmer of Tobaccoville, Danette Handy and husband Jeremiah of Pfafftown and Allyson Goins and husband Zachary Medlin of Winston-Salem; two great-grandchildren, Alex and Shelby Smith of Denver, N.C.; four sisters, Mary Samuels of Winston-Salem, Jessie Flynn of Bethania, Johnnie Bailey of Mocksville and Pat Douglas of East Bend; and four brothers, Jack Doub of Advance, Frank Doub of Pfafftown, Toby Doub of Mocksville and Jerry Doub of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel with Rev. Judy Davis and Rev. J. Dwight Cartner officiating, and burial followed at Elm Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Thelma Moore Smith
Thelma Moore Smith, 80, died August 7 at the Elms at Tanglewood in Clemmons. She was born August 21, 1923, in Rockingham County, the daughter of Mosby Raine Moore and Kate Turner Moore. She was the wife of the late Jack J. Smith, who died May 10, 2001. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church. Her life and Christian faith were reflected through her love for her family, church and friends.
Surviving are her four children, Pamela S. Compton of Clemmons, Brad Smith and wife Jerri, also of Clemmons, Lynne S. Marschke and husband Keith of San Diego, Calif. and Marc J. Smith and wife Pamela of Lewisville; and seven grandchildren, Courtney and Blair Smith of Clemmons, Jonathan A. Compton of Clemmons, Julianne and Jenna Smith of Lewisville and Mary Kate and Jack Bryan Marschke of San Diego.
Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church with Dr. David Hughes officiating.

George Ivan Byrd
George Ivan Byrd, 74, of Winston-Salem, died August 2 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home of Winston-Salem. He was born in Surry County on January 12, 1930, to the late George Everett Byrd and Avy Alexander Byrd.
Surviving are his wife, Lee Byrd of the home; a daughter, Cecilia Ayers and husband Ken of Lewisville; a stepson, Bob Hayes of Lenoir; three sisters, Frances B. Warren of Clemmons, Jean B. Harris of Elkin and Alene B. Ghant of Jonesville; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Johnson Funeral Home in Elkin with Rev. Jeff Cleary officiating, and burial followed at Center Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ottolene Lucille Eastridge Brannock
Ottolene Lucille Eastridge Brannock, 79, of Advance died August 7. She was born August 26, 1924, in Grayson County, Va., to Fred and Rhoda Carico Eastridge. She was preceded in death by her husband, Spurgeon Lee Brannock; a son, Robert Lee Brannock; and a great-granddaughter, Bethany.
Surviving are five children, Ray Brannock and wife Linda of Mocksville, James Brannock and wife Jean of Clemmons, Ricky Brannock and wife Beverly of Walkertown, Sue Roberson and husband John of Mocksville and Janice Solomon and husband John of Advance; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Brannock of Winston-Salem; 20 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
A graveside service was held at Snow Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Darrell Cox officiating.

Clarence Poe Fagg Sr.
Clarence Poe Fagg Sr., 81, of Mount Airy died August 4 at Central Continuing Care of Mount Airy. He was born August 31, 1922, in Stokes County, the son of James Lemly and Gracie Smith Fagg. He was retired as co-owner of Shelton Plumbing and Heating in Mount Airy for 46 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served with the 68th Tank of 6th Army Division during World War II, and was the recipient of two purple hearts, a silver star and five battle stars. He was a charter member of Flat Rock Ruritan Club, having served as past president, and was a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and was president of his Sunday school class. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Bonnie Fagg.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Margaret “Polly” Fagg of the home; three sons, Pete Fagg and wife Brenda of Mount Airy and Kenny Fagg and wife Sylvia and Bobby Fagg and wife Rhonda, all of Pilot Mountain; three granddaughters, Stephanie Presnell and husband Kevin of Pinnacle, Lori Coe and husband Luke of Pilot Mountain and Lisa Talton and husband Chad of Clemmons; three grandsons, Brandon Fagg and wife Susie of Westfield, Robert Fagg Jr. of Winston-Salem and Stephen Fagg and wife Amanda of Pilot Mountain; two stepgrandchildren, Melissa Baskin and husband Joe and Joseph Griffin, both of Mount Airy; 10 great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and two sisters, Lucille Stout of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Emma Otto and husband Dana of Lake Mary, Fla.
Funeral services were held at Flat Rock Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Loman officiating. Burial followed in Oakdale Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mount Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain.
