Julian Carl Meeks
Julian Carl Meeks, 99, of Winston-Salem died January 31 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born October 23, 1903, in Rockingham County to Jessie and Sallie Tullock Meeks. He was preceded in death by a sister, Nellie McDaniel; and two brothers, Crawford and Claude Meeks.
Surviving are a son, Bill M. Summey and wife Vicki of Lewisville.
A graveside service was held at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with Dr. Harold Fletcher officiating.

Woodrow Roy Eidson
Woodrow Roy Eidson, 89, died January 27 at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons. He was born March 4, 1913, in Iredell County to John V. and Hester Ladd Eidson. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Opal Parnell Eidson, in December of last year and a brother, Clyde T. Eidson.
Surviving are a son, Roy W. Eidson and wife Bobbie; a granddaughter, Kim Dawn Eidson; a brother, John V. Eidson and wife Lillian; and a sister-in-law, Agnes Eidson of New Orleans.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with James Percival officiating.

Lois Reavis Tutterow
Lois Reavis Tutterow, 77, of Mocksville died January 19 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Born in Davie County on March 28, 1925, she was the daughter of the late William Lee “Bean” and Irma Betts Reavis. She was a homemaker, a member of Center United Methodist Church and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Cooleemee. Her husband, Jeff Tutterow, preceded her in death in 1987.
Surviving are a son, Lloyd Tutterow and wife Joyce of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a daughter, Lori Setzer and husband John of Lewisville; a grandson, Cody; and two brothers, Clifford Reavis and wife Ruth Ann of Winston-Salem and Curtis Lee Reavis of Mocksville.
Funeral services were held at Davie Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Scott Lyerly officiating, and burial followed at Center United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Lois Tedder Wooters
Lois Tedder Wooters, 75, of Clemmons died January 29 at her home. She was born October 12, 1927, in Stokes County to William Ralph and Pauline Johnson Tedder. She was a charter member of Unity Moravian Church. Her husband, H.C. “Hank” Wooters, preceded her in death.
Surviving are three daughters, Cindi Barber of Clemmons, Meena Evans of Advance and Lisa Levens of Clemmons; a son, Mark Wooters of Winston-Salem; a sister, Brenda Parrish of Clemmons; four brothers, Richard Tedder of Welcome, Harrelle Tedder of Clemmons, Gayle Tedder of Kernersville and Barry Tedder of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, J. Mitch Sweat, Neil Wagstaff, Carl Wagstaff, Eric Levens and Lindy Levens; two great-grandchildren, Brandon Williams and Madison Sweat; and a lifelong friend, Betty Warner of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held at Unity Moravian Church with Rev. William McElveen officiating, and burial followed in the church graveyard.

Kathleen Shore Yates
Kathleen Shore Yates, 88, of Lewisville died January 27. She was born January 20, 1915, in Forsyth County to Jasper Levi and Ella Huffman Shore. She was a member of Shiloh Lutheran Church in Lewisville. She was retired from Western Electric (AT&T). She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard E. Yates; a grandson, Martin Craver; and a son-in-law, Norman Craver.
Surviving are two daughters, Ruby Craver of Clemmons and Connie Bodsford and husband W.G. of Denver, N.C.; four grandchildren, Keith Bodsford and wife Jane, Dana Cummings and husband Jeff, Steve Craver and Jill Craver; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Shiloh Lutheran Church with Rev. James White officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.

Wilma Roberta Bowles
Wilma Roberta Bowles, 71, of Clemmons, formerly of Jacksonville, Fla., died January 26 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born January 31, 1931, in Davie County to Amos Lee and Jessie Lee Johnston Bowles, and was a lifelong employee of Seaboard Coastline Railroad. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Alvin L. Bowles and John C. Bowles Sr.
Surviving are three sisters, Alice B. Dolman, Vera B. Scobey and husband Ed of Clemmons and Elnora B. Luper of Mocksville; and a brother, Worth M. Bowles and wife Dottie of Olympia, Wash.
A memorial service was held at Jericho Church of Christ with Tom Torpy and Harding Lowry officiating. Inurnment followed in the church cemetery.

Gena Howell Hix Elias
Gena Howell Hix Elias, 78, of Winston-Salem died January 31 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Born on July 1, 1924, in Akron, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Grover Cleveland Hix and Cassandra (Carrie) Thomas Hix of Moravian Falls. She married her husband, Lewis Weimar Elias Jr., in 1942 at College Station, Texas. In 1956 they moved their family to Winston-Salem. In 1967 she became one of the first teacher aides employed by the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system. She worked at both Parkland and North Forsyth senior high schools as well as private schools, including Forsyth Country Day School and Emmanuel Christian School. In 1975 she became a guide at Historic Bethabara Park, where she thoroughly enjoyed telling visitors “The Story of the Moravians” for over 22 years. Beginning in 1995, she taught classes for several years on the history of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County and the art of calligraphy for the Forsyth Technical Community College Continuing Education department. She was a member of the Old North State chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Rockford Preservation Society and a lifetime member of the Bethania Historical Society. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem for over 40 years and a member of St. Catherine’s Circle. For several years she hand-inscribed church records and information in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Memory Book.
Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Lewis Weimar Elias Jr. of the home; a son, Lewis Weimar Elias III and wife Renee Elias of Clemmons; three daughters, Elizabeth Tim Elias Gish and husband Dr. Larry Morgan Gish of Salisbury, Cassandra Hix Elias Callison and husband Michael Callison of Winston-Salem and Frances Carter Elias Binder and husband Dr. Steve Binder of Cornelius; a brother, William Thomas Hix and wife Martha Blackwelder Hix of Winston-Salem; a sister, Lana Jon Hix Reavis and husband James Clinton Reavis of Morganton; five grandchildren, Teresa Anne Gish Perry and husband Charles Kent Perry of San Carlos, Calif., Ellen Elizabeth Gish Dutton and husband David Glenn Dutton of Pleasant Hill, Calif., James Brian Hawley of Greenville, Liane Elizabeth Elias of Winston-Salem and Adam Carter Elias of Pilot Mountain; four great-grandchildren, Madeline Elise Perry and Benjamin Morgan Perry of San Carlos, Calif., and Emily Grace Dutton and Elizabeth Morgan Dutton of Pleasant Hill, Calif.; and a niece, Martha Jon Hix Siceloff and husband Dr. T. Eric Siceloff of Winston-Salem.
A private interment in Dalton Memorial Gardens was followed by a memorial service at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with Rev. Grayce M. O’Neill and Rev. Donald P. Goodheart officiating.

Larry Eugene Tolley
Larry Eugene Tolley, 63, of Clemmons died August 26. He was born January 16, 1940, in Forsyth County to James E. and Margaret Stout Tolley. He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother, Donald Joe Tolley.
Surviving are a daughter, Tyna Dodson and husband Ron of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Joshua, Michael, Matthew and Christin; his mother of Orlando, Fla., and Winston-Salem; five brothers, Jack Tolley and wife Toby, Jimmy Tolley and wife Loretta, David Tolley, Alvin Tolley and wife Pam, and Steve Tolley, all of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Tammie Tate and husband Dwayne of Orlando, Fla., and Patricia Glenn and husband Russell of Tucson, Ariz.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Woodland Cemetery with Rev. Tony Brown officiating.

Mechel Leigh Heckman-Davis
Mechel Leigh Heckman-Davis, 18, of Clemmons died August 24 as the result of an automobile accident. She was born June 11, 1985, in Blythe, Calif and was a 2003 graduate of North Davidson High School. She had several hobbies, was a softball fan, enjoyed the time spent with family and friends and would give of herself without hesitation. She wanted to be a kindergarten teacher.
Surviving are her parents, Scott and Stacy Davis; a sister, Hayden Marie Davis; a maternal grandmother, Patricia LePage of San Diego, Calif.; paternal grandparents, Dr. William and Virginia Bushnell of Oceanside, Calif., and Phillip and Marian Davis of Norfolk, Neb.; her great-grandfathers, Raleigh Bell of LaCrescenta, Calif., and D.R. Davis of Atkinson, Neb.; aunts, Cherokee Youngs of San Diego, Calif., Casey Kellogg of Norfolk, Neb., Allison Heckman of Phoenix, Ariz., Kari Davis and Sara Armstrong and husband Casey of Omaha, Neb.
A memorial service was held at Pinedale Christian Church with Pastor Bill McKenzie officiating.

Roy E. Joyner
Roy E. Joyner Sr., 79, of Winston-Salem died August 26. He was born December 9, 1923, in Duplin County, the son of the late Lonnie Joyner and Mertie Kelley Joyner. He founded and operated Joyner Wrecking Co. since 1966. He was a proud member of the Forsyth Lions Club, was on the board of directors of the Forsyth Rescue Squad and was a member of Northwest Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Texie Lou Salmons Joyner; a son, Roy “Eddie” Joyner Jr. and wife Jan; three grandsons, Travis E. Joyner, Colby Joyner and Carson Joyner, all of Lewisville; a sister, Betty J. Hollingsworth and husband Ralph; two brothers, James Joyner and wife Myrtle, and Ralph Joyner, all of Mount Olive; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall with Rev. Randy McKinney officiating.

Dorothy Wharton
Dorothy Wharton, 74, of Clemmons died August 28 after an extended period of illness. She was a native of North Carolina, born January 1, 1929. She worked at Sara Lee Inc., for 37 years before retiring. She attended Hickory Grove AME Zion Church until her health condition worsened. She was preceded in death by her mother, America Patterson.
Surviving are two sons, Robert Wharton III and James Wharton, both of Clemmons; two grandchildren, Mischelle Hampton and husband Sidney of Pfafftown and Robert Wharton IV of Winston-Salem; a nephew, Antwan Hairston of Clemmons; a devoted cousin, Libby Banner of Winston-Salem; three devoted friends, Dorothy Jenkins, Betty Imes and Dorothy Dixon, all of Winston-Salem; a daughter-in-law, Cozetta Wharton of Winston-Salem; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at Johnson-Howard-Robinson Home of Memory with Rev. Robert Bailey officiating, and burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery.

Larry Manie Stevens
Larry Manie Stevens, 57, of Hillsville, Va., died August 27 at his residence.
Surviving are his wife, Roma McMillian Stevens, of the home; four sons, Wendell Stevens of Durham, Ashley Stevens of Lewisville, Parker Stevens of Fredrick, Md., and Lee Stevens of Mount Airy; a stepson, Calvin Grubb of Mount Airy; a brother, Barry Stevens of Danbury; three sisters, Velmalene Leake of Danbury, Jeannette Hartley of King and Susan Stevens of Stuart, Va.; special aunts Nina Blair and Ellen Rhodes; and seven nephews; and five nieces.
Funeral services were held at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jennie Hemrick and Rev. Levi Humphreys officiating, and burial followed in Wilkinson Memorial Cemetery.

Ivelyn Hepler Haley
Ivelyn “Ivey” Hepler Haley, 67, of Winston-Salem died unexpectedly August 27 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Forsyth County on December 15, 1935, to the late Nellie and Robert Hepler. She worked for Forsyth Memorial Hospital as a respiratory therapist and at Integon. Since retirement, she continued to work at McDonald’s and was well-known for her biscuits and laughter. She touched the lives of everyone she met. She loved God and her family. She was her children’s best friend and a wonderful Nana to David. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bascom L. Haley.
Surviving are her daughter, Debbie Haley Angel and husband Carroll of Clemmons; a son, Mike Haley of the home; a grandson, David Angel; a stepfamily, Gene, Cecilia, Trenton and Gina Angel of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, Norman Hepler of Winston-Salem and Bob Hepler of Walkertown; and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a very special friend, Paul E. Burke; and “Rooster,” who was like a daughter to her.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Paul Mullen officiating, and burial followed at Woodland Cemetery.

Lola Maude McKinney Walls
Lola Maude McKinney Walls, 79, of Pfafftown died at Forsyth Medical Center on August 27. She was born July 18, 1924, in Pfafftown to Robert W. and Maude Cline McKinney. She was a lifelong member of Community United Church of Christ and an active member of the Women’s Fellowship as long as her health permitted. She retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 37 1/2 years of service. She was preceded in death by her brother and sisters, Ralph McKinney, Ethel Harrell, Maggie Luper and Betty Crowder.
Surviving are her husband, Arthur Clifton Walls, of the home; her son, Darle Walls and wife Joy; her daughter, Lisa Walls; two grandchildren, Christopher Todd and wife Kristi and Virginia Augusta; a great-grandchild, Harrison Reed Walls; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, her church family and special friends.
Funeral services were held at Community United Church of Christ with Rev. Steve Monroe officiating, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.

G. Wallace Rudisill III
G. Wallace Rudisill III, 47, of Winston-Salem died August 29 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born March 14, 1956, in Forsyth County to G.W. Rudisill II and Alma Forester Rudisill. He loved all mankind, especially his mother, wife and all of his friends. He was an avid fisherman. He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother, Steven Rudisill.
Surviving are his wife, Judy Rudisill of the home; his mother, Alma Williams of Clemmons; a brother, Wayne Gaines and wife Delores of Davidson County; and a very special niece, Jessica Rudisill of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Albert Smith officiating, and burial followed in Parklawn Memorial Gardens.

Arthur Calvin Cooke
Arthur Calvin “Ott” Cooke, 78, of Winston-Salem died August 29 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born July 17, 1925, in Forsyth County to Everette Lee and Annie Carter Cooke. Hewas a member of Woodland Baptist Church and the White Rock Civic Club. He was retired from McLean Trucking Co., with more than 30 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia A. Cooke of Winston-Salem; three daughters, Deborah McNeil and husband Patrick, and Cynthia Darlene Parker and husband Toby, all of Winston-Salem, and Donna Barham and husband Chuck of Lewisville; two sons, Christopher Calvin Cooke and fiancee Kristin of Charlotte, and Jason Lee Cooke and fiancee Kristie of Winston-Salem; a brother, Reid Cook of Advance; two sisters, Earlene Naylor of Clemmons and Elise “Lisa” Hepler of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Josh Parker, Adam Dunn, Ashley McNeil and Amanda McNeil; a great-grandson, Justin Lee Cooke; and two wonderful best friends whom he held dear to his heart, Jack Davis and Junior Gardner.
A graveside service was held at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown with Rev. Zeno Groce officiating.

Joe Buck Lowder
Joe Buck Lowder, 73, of Clemmons died August 27 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Forsyth County to Edgar Clarence and Alice Matthew Lowder. He was a graduate of Clemmons High School, where he excelled in sports and was an All-State Basketball Champion. He served as a medic in the U.S. Army, and he worked for Western Electric at Quadulan Island. He also worked for Lowder Inc. later in his life. He attended Union Hill Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, a brother, Clarence Edward; and a sister, Nancy Lowder McKnight, preceded him in death.
Surviving are a brother, Charles D. Lowder and wife Mary K. of Clemmons; five sisters, Linda L. Bailey of Yadkinville, Carolyn L. Tate and husband Thurman of Wilmington, Jane K. Smith of Winston-Salem, Peggy Redding of Pfafftown and Marie Haynes and husband Hubert of Marion; a brother in-law, John McKnight of Lewisville; a sister-in-law, Sonja Lowder of Clemmons; and several nieces and nephews who loved their Uncle Joe dearly.
A graveside service was held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons.

James Wheeler
James “Jim” Wheeler, 63, of Kernersville, died August 25 at Duke University Medical Center. He was born June 22, 1940, in Pike County, Ky., to Tom and Lucy Miller Wheeler. For 39 years he was an educator- as a coach, teacher, assistant principal and principal. His career began in Mooresboro Junior High School, coaching and teaching. In 1966 he moved to Winston-Salem and became a driver training instructor for the Department of Motor Vehicles. From 1970 until his retirement in 2000, he devoted his time and knowledge to bettering the quality of education for students in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools and to encourage parent involvement. He designed and implemented the School Desegregation Plan in the early ‘70s. As assistant principal at South Park High School, he said he learned a lot from these special kids that made him a better person. When he became principal of the Optional Education Center, he was able to be more creative with educating tools and introduced computers and video cameras into the curriculum. While he was principal at Mineral Springs Middle School, one of his most treasured accomplishments was the parental involvement. It was the only school in North Carolina to earn two consecutive Gold Key awards and the only school in the state to be named an A+ school by the Kenan Foundation. He and his staff were very pleased to persuade the school board to build an upscale media center to serve both the elementary and middle schools. He was preceded in death by his father; and two daughters, Tamara and Amanda Wheeler.
Surviving are his wife, Gayle Clinard Wheeler of the home; his mother of Burnsville; two sons, Thomas Wheeler of Clemmons and Darrell Wheeler and wife Linnley of Winston-Salem; two grandsons, Blaine Wheeler of Mount Airy and Christian Wheeler of Winston-Salem and Mandy Brim; two sisters, Elizabeth Allen and husband Ed of Fletcher and Grace Hensley and husband Dennia of Burnsville.
A memorial service was held at Hayworth-Miller Chapel.

Raymond Edwin Kallam
Raymond Edwin Kallam, 79, of North Myrtle Beach died August 27 at Loris Community Hospital. He was born on January 3, 1924, in Pinnacle, a son of the late Seaborn T. and Lillie Mae Stone Kallam. He worked with A&P for 38 1/2 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Mount Zion Methodist Church in Pinnacle. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Marvin Kallam, Everette Kallam and Charles Kallam; and a sister, Thelma Rierson.
Surviving are his wife of 25 years, Betty Powell Kallam of North Myrtle Beach; a daughter, Robin Smith Duffy and husband John of Anderson, S.C.; a sister, Ethel Angell of Clemmons; two grandchildren, Caitlyn and Ryan Duffy of Anderson, S.C.; his mother-in-law, Alta Lewis Powell; and a brother-in-law, Gary Jordan Powell.
A graveside service was held at Southeastern Memorial Gardens with Dr. Jim Mezick officiating.

Johnsie Counts Dixon
Johnsie Counts Dixon, 74, of Winston-Salem died August 27 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born May 22, 1929, in Forsyth County to the late John and Georgie S. Counts. She had lived in Winston-Salem all of her life.
Surviving are a sister, Betty C. Joyce and husband James of Winston-Salem; a devoted godchild, Eleanor Eaton of Winston-Salem; five nieces, Deborah S. Jordan and husband Johnnie of Lewisville, Dewitte C. Gist and husband Gary of Dallas, Texas, Carmen Joyce of Winston-Salem, and Patricia C. Sampson and Claryce Counts of Harvey, Ill.; four nephews, Leonard Moore of Mount Rainer, Md., Roger F. Stewart and wife Louise of Ridgecrest, Calif., Clarence W. Counts Jr. of Ovieda, Fla., and Leo Counts of Winston-Salem; four great-nieces; four great-nephews; two great-great-nieces; two great-great-nephews; a sister-in-law, Verna Counts, of Winston-Salem; and a host of friends and devoted neighbors.
Funeral services were held at the chapel of the Russell Funeral Home with Pastor Pamela Phillips officiating, and burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery.
