Larry Steven Inman
Larry Steven “Poppa” Inman, 58, of Winston-Salem died February 17 at his home. He was born May 26, 1947, in Surry County to David and Maggie Simmons Inman. He was a Vietnam veteran having served in the U.S. Army. He was an avid UNC fan and enjoyed all sports. He was retired from the manufactured-housing industry. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia “Trish” Kallam Inman, and his brother, David.
Surviving are his children, Sherri I. Jarvis and husband Rickey of Clemmons and Mark A. Inman of Atlanta; his step-children, Kimberly G. Holts and husband George of Sherrills Ford and Kelly C. Platt and husband James of Greensboro; five grandchildren, Courtney Shafer, Mason Galloway, Mikey and T.J. Moser and Tatum Jarvis; five sisters, Mary Gailey and husband Charles of Greensboro, Bonnie Whitaker and husband Frank of Tennessee, Shirley Duncan of Tennessee, Pattie Sue Inman of Tennessee and Peggy Green and husband Roger of Clemmons; a brother, Glenn (Bud) Inman and wife Sylvia of Pilot Mountain; and his canine companions, Harley, Haley and Jessie.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Brother Don Collins officiating. Burial followed at Parklawn Memorial Park.
Ruby Wise Bovender
Ruby Wise Bovender, 82, of Winston-Salem died February 19 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born April 19, 1923, in Forsyth County to Claude W. and Dora Kiser Wise. She worked at Hanes Hosiery Mill for 42 years and attended Mount Carmel Church of The Living God. She was a very devoted Christian and spent most of her time at various rest homes praying for the sick. She also enjoyed watching her sons and grandchildren participate in athletic events. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert P. Bovender Sr.; her parents; a sister, Ruth Smith; and a brother, Ralph Wise.
Surviving are two sons, Robert P. Bovender Jr. and wife Margaret of Charlotte and Jim G. Bovender Sr. and wife Libby of Winston-Salem; and six grandchildren, Rob Bovender and wife Carrie, Andy Bovender and wife Amy, Nickie Marchan and husband Ray, Anna Bovender, Gray Bovender and wife Karen, and Brad Bovender and wife Margaret.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with Rev. Joel K. Boyles officiating. Burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
David Horace Brown
David Horace Brown, 76, of Clemmons died April 25 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born April 22, 1930, in Milton, Mass., to Max Ordway and Alpha Crosby Brown. He was a member of Reynolda Presbyterian Church. After serving with the U.S. Navy, he worked for the Elwood School District in Long Island, N.Y., for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Joyce Anita Brown, and a brother, Allen Brown.
Surviving are a son, Mark Brown and wife Kim and their son, Brandon, of Pfafftown; a daughter, Nancy Schleimer, and husband Bruce and their daughters, Kathryn and Abigail, of Clemmons; and a brother, Donald Brown of Maine.
Funeral services were held at Reynolda Presbyterian Church with Pastor Alan Wright officiating. Burial followed at Conestoga Memorial Park in Lancaster, Pa.
Flossie Cleary Walker
Flossie Cleary Walker, 86, of Clemmons died April 23 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Jan. 25, 1920, in Wilkes County to William and Alice Burchette Cleary. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Alvin Walker.
Surviving are three daughters, Vetral Bennett and husband Paul of Belews Creek and Frances Spainhour and husband James and Maxine Hayes and husband John “Ike,” all of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Tim Bennett, Mark Bennett, Kevin Spainhour and Dawn Hall; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Marvin Blackburn officiating. Burial followed at Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery in Mocksville.
James Franklin Cathey Jr.
James “Jim” Franklin Cathey Jr., 75, of Winston-Salem died April 29 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Buncombe County to James Franklin and Beulah Bumgardner Cathey. He managed Parkway Bowling Lanes for 25 years, and in that time he met and touched many people. He was inducted into the Central Piedmont Bowling Hall of Fame and was a member of the local Senior PBA Tour. Over his long bowling career, he bowled several 300 games, with the most amazing coming after being diagnosed, treated, and beating his first bout with cancer. He was an avid bowler and continued to bowl faithfully until his health declined. He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Edwin Cathey.
Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Eloise B. Gaines Cathey of the home; a son, Frank Cathey and wife Rhonda of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Elaine Cathey Foerster of Lewisville; a stepson, Mike Gaines of Lexington; three grandchildren, Brandon Cathey of Los Angeles, Eric Cathey of Winston-Salem and Lily Foerster of Lewisville; four stepgrandchildren, Sharon Lovelace and husband Mike of Lexington, Michael Gaines and wife Erin of Lexington, Angi Wilson and husband Matt of Sumter, S.C., and Charles Stevens of Winston-Salem; three stepgreat-grandchildren, Madison Lovelace, Reiley Wilson and Anthony Stevens; godchildren, Carrie White and Megan White; a sister, Joretta Wallin and husband Broughton of Asheville; a brother, Ervin Cathey and wife JoAnn of Candler; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Steve Clayton officiating. Burial followed at Parklawn Memorial Park.
William Thomas Hampton
William “Bill” Thomas Hampton, 77, of Winston-Salem died April 24 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born December 6, 1928, in Stokes County to the late Joe and Nannie Bennett Hampton. After 33 years, he retired from Roadway, where he was known as “Shorty.” He was a World War II Navy veteran. He was preceded in death by his son, William “Billy” Thomas Hampton Jr.; his second wife, Sarah Hampton; a sister; and seven brothers.
Surviving are his three daughters, Rená Dancy and husband Bob of Winston-Salem, Tanya Lynch and husband Randy of Clemmons and Cindy Flanner and husband Rick of Winston-Salem; grandchildren Mike and Steve Dancy, Nikki Parsons, Nick Flanner and Megan Chaney; former wife Joy Hampton; a sister, Nancy Tuttle of Kernersville; and his two companions, “Joe” and “Gizzy.”
Funeral services were held at West Side Baptist Church.
Carl Dean Bedsaul
Carl Dean Bedsaul, 78, of Dobson died April 28 at Elkin Healthcare in Elkin. He was born in Alleghany County on September 24, 1927, to the late Bradie Bedsaul and Laura Andrews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Bedsaul; and the mother of his children, Betty Handy Bedsaul Watson.
Surviving are three daughters, Linda Andrews of Peachtree City, Ga., Ellen Gurganus of Clemmons and Vickie Versluys of Peachtree City; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Oddie Edwards of Sparta and Helen Smith of Elizabeth, W.Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A graveside service was held at Glade Creek Union Baptist Church Cemetery near Sparta with Rev. Mitch Robertson officiating.
Van Buren Woody
Van Buren Woody, 82, of Jonesville died April 26 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. He was born in Yancey County on May 29, 1923, to John C. Woody and Lillie W. Woody. He was a member of Jonesville First Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Madge Keaton; a brother, Gem Woody; and a grandchild, Wayne Young.
Surviving are his wife, Maude Jenkins Woody of the home; three children, Richard B. Woody and wife Carla of Newport News, Va., Alvin D. Woody and wife Mona of Taylorsville and Vana Leigh Nichols and husband Alex of Lewisville; four grandchildren, Cheryl Danielson and husband Jeff, Charles Harris, Virginia Westmark and Alexander Howell; four great-grandchildren, Teddy and Eric Danielson and Mikayla and Kahleen Howell; three brothers, Ward Woody and wife Florence Woody of Hickory, J.C. Woody and wife Zula Mae of Burnsville and Ivan Woody and wife Earlene of Morganton; and three sisters, Annie Underwood of Maiden, Jewel Thomas of Yancey County and Barbara McDaniel of Hickory.
Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church of Jonesville with Rev. Roger Hensley officiating. Burial followed at Swaim’s Baptist Church Cemetery.
Lillian Reid Matthews
Lillian Reid Matthews, 80, of Clemmons died April 29 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born November 22, 1925, in Forsyth County to Graham Edgar and Blanche Angel Reid Sr. She was a member of South Fork Baptist Church. Her greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings and her neighbors. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Audry Glenn Matthews.
Surviving are a daughter, Vicky Lynn Matthews of the home; two sons, Ronny Glenn Matthews and wife Cathy of China Grove and Larry Dean Matthews and wife Rebecca of Clemmons; seven grandchildren, Rhonda, Steve, Wendy, Annette, Mark, Holly and Lauren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Gladys Reid Matthews, of Mocksville; three brothers, Graham Edgar Reid Jr. and wife Bobbie of Winston-Salem, John A. Reid and wife Ginger of Clemmons and H. Leroy Reid of Winston-Salem; and “Lilly,” her Yorkshire terrier.
A graveside service was held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory with Rev. Ray Burke and Rev. Rick Sewell officiating.
Esther Elizabeth Martin Padgett
Esther Elizabeth Martin Padgett, 91, died April 29 at Clemmons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born November 19, 1914, in Bedford County, Va., to William Albert Martin and Hessie Ora Burnett. She had lived most of her life in Lynchburg, Va., where she worked as a secretary for the Lynchburg Public School System. She was born a Christian lady and a member of Fort Hill United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Loxley Padgett, in 1980; and an infant son, Loxley Lloyd Padgett Jr.
Surviving are a daughter, Betsy Padgett Richardson and husband Bruce of Winston-Salem; granddaughters Jane Richardson Snyder and husband James William Snyder Jr. and Martha Richardson Sacrinty and husband Thomas Matthew; and great-grandchild Rebecca Elizabeth Snyder.
A graveside service was held at Fort Hill Memorial Park in Lynchburg with Dr. Carl Douglas officiating.
Elma Miriam Yates Brewer
Elma Miriam Yates Brewer, 93, of The Elms at Tanglewood, died December 5. She was born in Fuquay-Varina on December 23, 1912 to the late James Norman and Janie Bell Yates. She was a member of Clemmons United Methodist Church. She graduated from Dunn High School in 1931 and St. Mary’s College in Raleigh in 1932. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Brewer.
Surviving are her children, Ed Brewer and wife Cindy, Miriam Beauchamp and husband Mike and Rebecca Matthews and husband Larry; grandchildren David and Katherine Brewer, Kevin and William Beauchamp, Holly Nutall and Lauren Sloop; great-grandchildren Rebecca Sawyer, Parker, Will and Maggie Beauchamp and Samantha Teague; brother James Yates and wife Jane of Dunn; and sisters Thelma Swann of Elizabethtown and Gladys Sandlin of Fayetteville.
Funeral services were held at Clemmons United Methodist Church with Rev. Phillip Cole officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Phyllis Theresa Heggie
Phyllis Theresa Heggie, 80, of Clemmons, formerly of Winston Salem died December 7 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born February 14, 1926, in Kernersville, one of 11 children born to the union of Samuel and Pearl Lowe Heggie. In addition to her employment in various private homes, she was an ordained apostolic minister. She was preceded in death by her parents and all her siblings.
Surviving are two sons, Theodore Wayne Heggie of New York City and Douglas Heggie of Dallas, Texas; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four nephews; a sister-in-law, Lucille Heggie of New York; other relatives; and friends.
Benjamin Sylvester Ruffin
Benjamin Sylvester Ruffin, 64, of Clemmons died December 7. He was born December 11, 1941, in Durham, the son of Catherine and Benjamin S. Ruffin. He has been hailed as an “educator, civic leader and humanitarian.” At the time of his death, he served as president and chief executive officer of his company, The Ruffin Group, which he organized October 4, 1999. He had one executive assistant, Essie C. McCullough, in the company that specialized in government relations, public affairs and community relations. He received many awards and honors during his career. Among them are eight honorary degrees from colleges and universities; the 1991 NAACP Kelly Miller Alexander Humanitarian Award; the North Carolina Kappa Man of the Year Award; Distinguished Alumni Awards from the University of North Carolina School of Social Work; the North Carolina Association of Black County Officials Frederick Douglass Leadership Award; and the National Urban League’s Donald H. McGannan Citation. He was a “life” and “golden heritage” member of the NAACP, a Prince Hall Mason and former polemarch of the Winston-Salem Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He was an active member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher and usher. He was an avid golfer and jogger.
Surviving are his wife of 31 1/2 years, Avon; two daughters, April Ruffin-Adams and husband Fred and Benita; a brother, Fred Ruffin and wife Patricia Ann; three sisters, Celestine McIver, Carolyn Blount and Cheryl Smith, all of Durham; in-laws, Carolyn Napoleon and husband George of Amityville, N.Y., and Lillian Morgan and husband Charlie, Thomas Long Jr., Mary Lowe and husband Greg, George Long and Ruth Long, all of Salisbury; and a host of nieces, nephews and special friends.
Funeral services were held at Emmanuel Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. John Mendez officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery.
Helen Bowling Faulkner
Helen Bowling Faulkner, 75, of Clemmons died December 8 at the Sticht Center. She was born July 26, 1931, in South Carolina to Connie Robert and Rilla James Bowling. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Ivadell Gilstrap and Gladys B. Grant; and four brothers, Doyle V. Bowling, Willie Paul Bowling, Robert G. Bowling and Connie R. Bowling Jr.
Surviving are two sons, Connie D. Bowling and wife Billie of Winston-Salem and John T. Faulkner of Greenwood, SC; two sisters, Rilla Kathleen Mahon of Greenville, SC, and Nellie Ruth Hopkins of Greenwood, SC; a brother, James Leroy Bowling of Greenville, SC; three granddaughters, Jennifer B. Garner of Winston-Salem, Shannan B. Welborn of Lexington, and Gabrielle D. Bowling of Winston-Salem; five great-grandchildren, Lexie Bowling, Kristian Garner, Brady Garner, Justine Welborn and Kendall Welborn; and her dog, “Montana.”
Funeral services were held at Greenwood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel in Greenwood, SC, with Rev. Kent Oviatt and Rev. David Brame officiating with interpreter Denise Oviatt.
Warren G. Collins
Warren G. Collins, 83, of Lewisville died December 9 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born December 2, 1923, in Yadkin County to Thomas Sanford Collins and Cora Elizabeth Speer Collins. He retired from the Hanes plant on Stratford Road in Winston-Salem after 42 years of service. He was a member of Union United Methodist Church. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved working in his yard. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia H. Collins, and a sister, Nellie Ruth Collins.
Surviving are his daughter, Carma Dawson and husband Charles of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, James Warren Bolen of Winston-Salem and Connie Virginia Wood of Chapel Hill; two great-grandchildren, Dylan Wood and Brendan Wood; four sisters, Pearl Warden and Beulah Warden, both of Yadkinville, Mary Evans of Advance and Betty Cheek of Clemmons; five brothers, Joshua Collins, Ray Collins and Bobby Collins, all of Yadkinville, Bruce Collins of Winston-Salem and Rev. Roger Collins of Danville, Va.

Carlene Brendle Marion
Carlene Brendle Marion, 66, of Clemmons died December 10 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born July 27, 1940, in Surry County to the late Harvey and Lillie Mae Brendle. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She loved the outdoors, being an avid gardener and having hiked many mountains. She was a champion tennis player, having won city, state and national titles.
Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Billy J. Marion; a son, Jeffrey Marion and wife Phyllis of Philadelphia, Pa.; a daughter, Lisa M. Bolon and husband Tim of Concord; two grandsons, Jacob and Bradley Bolon; three sisters, Edith Snow and husband Arvil of Lewisville, Bea Whitaker of Dobson and Marie Wagoner and husband Adrian of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Wes Brendle and wife Joann of Walkertown.
Funeral services were held at Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. Gary Chapman and Dr. Guy Hipp officiating. Burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. Memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
Margaret Binder Ruark
Margaret Binder Ruark, 86, of Winston-Salem died December 5 at her home. She was one of twin daughters born to Lawrence O. and Charlotte G. Binder on January 19, 1920 in Leonia, NJ. She was a civilian adminstrative secretary with the Army Air Forces Board, AAFTAC, in Orlando, Fla. She and her husband moved to North Carolina from Des Plaines, Ill. in 1957. She worked at the Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and the Bowman Gray School of Medicine. For many years she was an active member of Chapter P-PEO Sisterhood, an organization promoting higher education for women. She enjoyed singing with the choir at Centenary Methodist Church and participated in the cirle and social services programs. As a volunteer she served with the ARC and Oxford Antiques. She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin S. Ruark, on December 4, 1990.
Surviving are a son, Bart Ruark of Newberry, Fla.; a daughter, Grace deValinger of Wilmington; a sister, Barbara Hall of Tacoma, Wash.; a granddaughter, Sheila Maurer and husband Roger of Clemmons; and three great-grandchildren, Lauren, Christopher and Caitlin Maurer of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held at Vogler’s Reynolda Chapel. Burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Dexter Gwyn Oakley
Dexter Gwyn Oakley, 83, of Lawsonville died December 4 at Stokes Reynolds Memorial Hospital. He was born March 31, 1923 in Stokes County to the late William Terry and Pencie Wood Oakley. He was a retired postmaster in Lawsonville with 28 years of service, a retired farmer and a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He was also a charter member of the Lawsonville Ruritan Club, a charter member of the Lawsonville Volunteer Fire Department and a life member of VFW Post 5953 of Danbury. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Blanche Robertson Oakley; three brothers, Jones, Bill and Watson Oakley; and a sister, Georgia Oakley.
Surviving are his sons, Lonnie Oakley of Winston-Salem and former wife Marlene Oakley of Clemmons, Ted and Wanda Oakley Durham, Mark and Brenda Oakley of Westfield and Don and Donna Oakley of Sandy Ridge; grandchildren, Kimberly Mabe and husband Todd, Michael Oakley, Amanda Oakley, Matthew Oakley and Heather Oakley; a great-grandson, Noah Mabe; sisters, Annie Mae Oakley and Ellen O. Spencer, both of Walnut Cove, Mildred Oakley of Sandy Ridge and Elneese Oakley of Danbury; and a brother-in-law, P.H. Robertson of Wesley Chapel, Fla.
Funeral services were held at Snow Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Rev. Joel Stephens officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. military rites were conducted by American Legion Post 290 of King.
Horace Edward Kindle
Horace Edward Kindle of Pfafftown died December 8 at Select Specialty Hospital of Forsyth Medical Center.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Kindle; daughter, Kesi Kindle; son, Kevin Kindle; brothers, Donald and Archie Kindle; sisters, Mary Graves and Margaret Alexander; and a host of other relatives.
Funeral services were held at Goler Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church.
Faye Swaim Pitts
Faye Swaim Pitts, 90, of Winston-Salem died December 11 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born January 12, 1916, in Forsyth County to Eugene Johenry and Martha Mendenhall Swaim. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton E. Pitts Sr., six brothers and four sisters.
Surviving are three daughters, Nancy Smith of Clemmons, Linda Doub and husband Harold of Pinnacle and Dianne Sykes of Winston-Salem; a son, Clifton E. Pitts Jr. and wife Phyllis of King; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Kathleen Swaim of Winston-Salem.
A graveside service was held at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with Elder E.W. Hooven Jr. officiating. Memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
