Jessie Hauser Anthony
Jessie Hauser Anthony, 79, of Winston-Salem died January 11. She was one of seven children and was born April 9, 1924, to the late Charles Ephraim Hauser and Ruby Douglas Hauser of Lewisville. She was married to Aubrey L. Anthony, who preceded her in death in 1968. She retired from Z. Smith Reynolds Library of Wake Forest University in 1989.
Surviving are her sister, Nell Hauser Trivette of Lewisville; two stepdaughters; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special friend, Ruth Brown of Lewisville.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park Cemetery.
Margaret Fulton Mock
Margaret Fulton Mock, 99, of Lewisville-Vienna Road died January 14 at her home, just three weeks from her 100th birthday. She was born February 11, 1904, to Lucius and Daisy Sheek Fulton of Clemmons. She also worked at the carbon plant during World War II and served as school cafeteria manager for several years. She taught school for many years. She was a member of Brookstown United Methodist Church. She was married to J. Pierce Mock in 1933. He preceded her in death in November 1984. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Luna Luckenbach, Frances Fulton Mock and Caroline Moore; and a brother, Roy Fulton.
Surviving are four children, Sarah Ann Spaugh and husband Bruce of Winston-Salem, Cecil Mock and wife Janette, Floyd Mock and wife Ruth and Carey Mock and wife Elaine, all of Pfafftown; eight grandchildren, David Spaugh and wife Jayne, Lisa Pilcher and husband Reggie of Yadkinville, Craig Mock and wife Linda of Pfafftown, Michelle Myers and husband Roger of Mooresville, Laura McKnight and husband Mike of Pfafftown, Christine Huntsman and husband Jack of Caswell Beach, Bill Mock of Mocksville and Joan Snow and husband Terry of Advance; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Price Greer of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Brookstown United Methodist Church with Rev. Eugene Dean and Rev. Derry Barnhardt officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Avis W. Tilley
Avis W. Tilley, 81, of Clemmons died January 15.
A private graveside service was held at Crestview Memorial Park Cemetery in Rural Hall.
Robert L. Brannock
Robert L. Brannock, 59, of Winston-Salem died January 8 at Forsyth Medical Center after a long illness. He was born September 13, 1944, in Galax, Va., to Spurgeon L. and Ottolene Eastrigde Brnanock. He was in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971, serving in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970 as a Specialist 5th Class-American Division. In 2000 he retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 34 years of service. He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, Roger Brannock; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Samuel W. Knott and Mecie W. Knott.
Surviving are his wife, Sandra K. Brannock; three children, Amanda B. Beck and husband Shane of Mount Airy, Robert L. Brannock Jr. and wife Crystal of Winston-Salem and Samuel Bryan Brannock of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren Cristi Lynn Mabe, Dakota Kane Brannock and Autumn Nicole Beck, due in April 2004; his mother, Ottolene L. Brannock; two sisters, Janice Soloman and husband John of Advance and Sue Robertson and husband John of Mocksville; three brothers, James Brannock and wife Jean of Clemmons, Ray Brannock and wife Linda of Mocksville and Ricky Brannock and wife Beverly of Walkertown; a brother-in-law, Samuel W. Knott Jr; a sister-in-law, Wanda Stephens; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Marshall Baptist Church with Rev. John Holmes and Rev. Milton Frazier officiating, and entombment followed at Gardens of Memory in Walkerton.
William Howard Sisk Jr.
William Howard Sisk Jr., 61, of Kernersville died January 11 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born September 30, 1942, in Swansboro, a son of William Howard Sisk Sr. and Roberta Elnita Wiggins Sisk. He was a U.S. Navy senior chief petty officer for 22 years and a retiree of Merfin Systems, Inc., a paper manufacturer in King, as controller. In addition to his father, W. Howard Sisk, he was preceded in death by a brother, Steven C. Sisk.
Surviving are his wife, June Tatum Sisk of the home; two sons, William Keith Sisk and wife Jackie of Newport News, Va., and Mark Sisk of Clemmons; a granddaughter, Kyla Sisk; his mother, Elnita Wiggins Sisk of Kernersville; a sister, Karen Farley of Apex; a nephew and niece, Jeff Farley and Jill Farley, both of Apex; a nephew and niece, Mark Vineyard and Christy Vineyard, both of Kernersville; and a great-nephew, Zachary Vineyard of Kernersville.
A memorial service was held at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel with Elder David Alexander officiating.
Melquiades Santiago
Melquiades “Sam” Santiago, 72, of Lewisville died January 16 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born June 14, 1931, in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, to Mr. and Mrs. Juan Jos Santiago. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict and was a member of Temple Baptist Church and the Gideons. He had retired from Allied Systems with 32 years service.
Surviving are his wife, Linda Walker Santiago of the home; two daughters, Rose Whitt and husband Keith of Lewisville and Joanna Ayers and husband Dale of Clemmons; two sons, Andy Santiago and wife Mindy of Yadkinville and Rick Santiago and wife Tiffany of Charlotte; six grandchildren, Angie Hutton, Eddie Mabe, Michelle Ayers, Nikki, Robbie and Noah Santiago; two great-grandchildren, Isaak Mabe and Brooke Hutton; and a sister and three brothers in Puerto Rico.
Funeral services were held in Temple Baptist Church with Dr. Bud Owen officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
David Lee Kelly
David Lee Kelly, 63, of Sparta, died January 16 at his home. He was born April 10, 1940, in Forsyth County to the late Calvin Anderson Kelly and Cora Willard Kelly. He was a retired barber. He was of the Baptist faith and had lived in Alleghany County for the past six years. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffery William Kelly.
Surviving are his wife, Gloria Richmond Kelly of the home; two daughters, Penny Kelly Pettitt of Westfield and Donna Kelly Idol of Kernersville; two sons, Randall Lee Kelly and Michael Kelly, both of Sparta; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruth Morris of Lewisville and Betty Russell of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with burial in the Sparta Cemetery.
Biddie Hendrix Dilworth
Biddie Hendrix Dilworth, 91, of Homestead Hills Retirement Community-Assisted Living died January 11. She had been in declining heath since 1988 due to Alzheimer’s disease. She was born October 6, 1912 in the Fork community of Davie County. She was the second of 11 children in the family of Atta Emon and Nannie Foote Hendrix. She was married to Virgil Lee Dilworth Jr. for 65 years prior to his death in 1999.
She began her career as a registered nurse at City Memorial Hospital and spent nearly 40 years at N.C. Baptist Hospital, working primarily in obstetrics and gynecology in 4th West at the original facility on Hawthorne Road. She retired in the 1970s from N.C. Baptist Hospital and was a lifetime member of the CMH-FMH Nursing Alumni Association. She also provided private-duty nursing for a number of families over the years and served at times with the late Dr. D.C. Speas at his clinic on Reynolda Road. Following retirement from nursing, she devoted herself to homemaking, gardening and her granddaughters. She was a longtime member of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sisters, Hazel Myers of Clemmons and Nell Wyatt of Mocksville; a brother, Henry A. Hendrix of Clemmons; a son, Richard Lee Dilworth of the home; two granddaughters, Virginia Mitchell Dilworth of Columbia, S.C., and Joanna Lee Dilworth of New York City; and her two loving dogs, Muffin and Trudy, both regular visitors while she was living at Homestead Hills.
Funeral services were held at Mount Tabor United Methodist Church with Rev. Derry Barnhardt officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Caroline Fulton Moore
Caroline Fulton Moore, 89, of Winston-Salem and Piney Creek died January 9. She was born May 23, 1914, to Lucius and Daisy Fulton of Clemmons. She spent her early life and was educated in the Clemmons Moravian Community. She was a former member of the Rural Hall Church of Christ and presently a member of Olivet Moravian Church. She was the retired secretary/receptionist for Smithdeal Realty of Winston-Salem and Dr. James N. Ziglar, DDS of Rural Hall. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Edward Moore; and her siblings, Frances Mock, Luna Luckenbach and Roy Fulton.
Surviving are three children, Linda Thomson and husband Dale of Pfafftown, Ann Yoder and husband Jim of Greensboro and Edward F. Moore and wife Penny of Statesville; six grandchildren, Linette Hall and husband David of Pinnacle, Hal Thomson of Portland, Ore., Julie Evans of Winston-Salem, John Evans and wife Andrea of Piney Creek, Catherine Kerr of Carrboro and Jessica Moore of Asheville; a great-grandson, Ben Hall of Pinnacle; and a sister, Price Greer. Another sister, Margaret Mock, died January 14, 2004.
Funeral services were held at Olivet Moravian Church.
John Marion McElrath
John Marion McElrath, 77, of Winston-Salem died January 8 at his home. He was born April 2, 1926, in Old Salem to John Marion and Mary Tesh McElrath Sr. He served with the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 and retired after 34 years from Western Electric in 1981. He loved gardening, making furniture in his shop at home and spending time with his wife at their mountain cabin in Todd. He was a member of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jack McElrath.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Nelda Petree McElrath of the home; two daughters, Molly McElrath Bland and husband David of Cary and Marian McElrath Bell and husband David of Raleigh; four grandchildren, Lee Graham Bell of UNC Wilmington, Jo Kathryn Bland and Sarah Grayson Bland of Cary and John Tabor Bell of Raleigh; and a sister, Elizabeth “Cricket” West and husband Don of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held at Mount Tabor United Methodist Church, and burial followed in Salem Cemetery.
Herschel Moseley Tyson
Herschel “Hank” Moseley Tyson of Winston-Salem died January 17 at home. He was born in Pitt County to Grigg Thomas and Pearl Brown Tyson on March 15, 1923. He served as a flight engineer in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was employed by Hennis Freight Lines for 30 years, and was director of insurance and safety when the company closed. He was later employed by Glosson Enterprises and Epes Transport, from which he retired in 1992. He was a member of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school for many years and also served on the board of trustees. He was a member of the safety council of the N.C. Motor Carriers Association, the Mount Tabor Civic Club and the Mount Tabor Volunteer Fire Department and their board of directors. He was an avid photographer who loved automobiles, tractors, airplanes and working in his yard. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathleen Tyson Rohrer; two sisters, Brownie Tyson Allen and Edith Tyson Denton; and two brothers, Albert Tyson and Grigg Tyson Jr.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Lee Tyson of the home; his children, Walter Tyson of Fresno, Calif., Clark Tyson and wife Jane of Winston-Salem, Lou Ann DiMarco and husband David of Lewisville and Linda Morini and husband Herve of the home; three granddaughters, MacKenzie, McCall and Kelsey DiMarco; two grandsons, Kevin and Michael Tyson; a brother and his wife, Francis Durward and Betty Tyson of Winterville; and two sisters-in-law, Audrey Tyson of Kinston and Mary Tyson of Greenville; two sisters-in-law, Flora Ann L. Bynum of Winston-Salem and Virginia L. McKay of Raleigh; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Mount Tabor United Methodist Church, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Jimmy Lawrence Robinson
Jimmy Lawrence Robinson, 65, of Harmony, beloved husband for 45 years of Patricia Kovac Robinson, died at his home on January 14. He was born December 13, 1938, in Montgomery, Ala. He retired from Stroh’s Container Corp. in Winston-Salem. His hobbies were raising miniature horses and raising funds for Shriners Hospitals for Children. He was made a Master Mason on November 18, 1969, at Cornithian Lodge 104 in Easton, Del. While retaining his membership there, he became a member of Clemmons Lodge 755 in Clemmons. He was a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Winston-Salem; a member of Statesville Shrine Club; a lifetime member of Oasis Shrine Temple in Charlotte; a charter member of the Order of The Eastern Star Chapter 373 in Clemmons; and a lifetime member of The Order of Quetzal Coatl, Teocali 99, which is an organization of Shriners. He loved to ride in parades with the Shrine units he belonged to. He showed his love for children by raising funds for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. He was preceded in death by his father, Lester M. Robinson.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Kovac Robinson; his daughters, Debra Robinson of Harmony and Cynthia Anderson and husband Roger of North Wilkesboro; a son, Jayme Robinson and wife Debra; his mother, Louise H. Robinson of Montgomery, Ala.; his sisters, Peggy Pooley and husband William of Laurel, Del., Robbie Nell Oliver of San Antonio, Texas, Linda McLendon and husband Carl of Montgomery, Ala., and Shirley Headley and husband Don of Prattville, Ala.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
Todd Christopher Hayes
Sgt. 1st Class Todd Christopher Hayes, 39, of Clemmons died September 29 at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital in Columbia, S.C. He was currently serving active duty in the U.S. Army at Fort Jackson Training Center in Columbia, S.C. After four years in the U.S. Marine Corps, heserved 17 years in the U.S. Army Reserves until activation two years ago. At Fort Jackson, he reached the rank of sergeant first class and was responsible, along with his fellow drill sergeants in Echo Company, for training of nearly 1,500 recruits. Before his activation, he was employed as a truck driver by Allied Systems in Winston-Salem. As the class president of graduating class of 1984 at West Forsyth High School, he was a gracious leader who touched many lives. He was actively involved in youth athletics around the Clemmons area and loved spending time with friends and family. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Conrad Hayes, and his grandparents.
Surviving are his mother, Dottie Stout Hayes of Clemmons; his three children, Lauren Elizabeth Hayes, 15, Amanda Marie Hayes, 13, and Bradley Ryan Hayes, 10, of Clemmons; his brother, Michael Hayes and wife Mayra of Clemmons; his sister, Suzanne Wall and husband Robert of Lewisville; his nephews and nieces, Daniel, Mary Ann and Grace Wall of Lewisville and Brian and William Hayes of Clemmons; his aunts and uncles, Roger and Polly Hayes of Clemmons, Donald and Geraldine Hayes of Winston-Salem, Mary Dee Malek of Greensboro and Sylvia Teague of Morehead City; and numerous other cousins, companions and close friends.
Funeral services were held at Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. Guy Hipp officiating. Burial with full military rites followed at Forsyth Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Jackson Training Center in Columbia, S.C.
Erskine Lee Pope
Erskine “Erk” Lee Pope, 77, of Winston-Salem died October 1 at his home. He was born May 25, 1928, in Goldsboro to Gurney Lee and Eloise Bradshaw Pope. He was principal owner and president of EPCO Construction Co. since 1979, having been in the construction business since 1948. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and attended Campbell College. He was a Mason and a member of Forsyth Lodge 707 and the Winston-Salem Shrine Club. He was a member of Shallowford Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Mary Lou Donnell Pope of the home; two sons, Don Pope and wife Katie of Charlotte and Bill Pope and wife Robin of Lewisville; a daughter, Carol Richardson and husband Bob of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Chad and Courtney Pope of Winston-Salem, Mary Elizabeth and Deas Pope of Charlotte, Wes Richardson of New York City and Blake Richardson of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Pat Toole of Raleigh; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service was held at Shallowford Presbyterian Church.
Rosetta H. Dye
Rosetta H. Dye, 85, of Clemmons died September 24 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born March 8, 1920, in Swaim County and raised in Macon County near Franklin. She was the daughter of the late France and Rachel Mason Holden. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell C. Dye, a retired senior master sergeant, U.S. Air Force. She traveled extensively with her husband during his 30-year Air Force career. Their daughter, Pamela Dye Johnson, was born during the family’s tour of duty at Hickman Air Force Base in Honolulu, Hawaii. After retirement, the family settled in Winston-Salem and Mrs. Dye spent the rest of her life caring for her family, loved ones and friends. She was a devoted caregiver for her own mother and elder siblings who preceded her in death. She continued as a principal caregiver for her eldest surviving sister right up until the time of her own debilitating illness.
Surviving are a son, Larry A. Tucker of Alexandria, Va.; a daughter, Pamela Dye Johnson, of Mount Airy; a grandson, Brian Casey Johnson (Casey), of Dobson; two sisters, Eldi Holt of Winston-Salem and Dessie Peddycord of Clemmons; six nieces; five nephews; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Ron Hawkins officiating. Burial followed in Parklawn Memorial Park.
Lillian Poindexter Smitherman
Lillian Poindexter Smitherman, 98, of Pfafftown died October 1 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born in Yadkin County on October 16, 1906, to Samuel and Cordelia W. Poindexter. She was a charter member of Old Richmond Evangelical Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Clyde Smitherman.
Surviving are a daughter, Ruth Buchanan and husband Robert of Durham; three sons, Jimmie Smitherman and wife Jessie Ray, Ronnie Smitherman and wife Betty Jo and Michael Smitherman and wife Carol, all of Pfafftown; three brothers, Clint Poindexter of East Bend, Gray Poindexter of Winston-Salem and Gorrell Poindexter of Boonville; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Old Richmond Evangelical Methodist Church with Rev. Bryant Madren and Rev. Brian Law officiating. Burial followed in East Bend Memorial Park Cemetery.
Clifford Ray Childress
Clifford Ray Childress, 51, of Clemmons died October 2 at his residence. He was born September 4, 1954, in Forsyth County to George Ray and Edera Robertson Childress. He was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church and was employed by Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County Schools.
Surviving are his wife, Linda R. Childress of the home; two daughters, Kimberly Tannehill and husband Lance and Candice Childress, all of Lexington; a grandchild, Ian Tannehill; his mother, Edera Childress of Clemmons; two sisters, Jane Joyner of Lewisville and Georgia Theile of Lexington; a brother, Steve Childress of Clemmons; a brother-in-law, Bill Rosenbaum and wife Carol of Winston-Salem; several nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services were held at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church with Rev. Mark Denton officiating. Burial followed at Parklawn Memorial Park.
Elizabeth Hester Swain
Elizabeth “Betty” Hester Swain, 87, of Clemmons died September 23 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born September 4, 1918, in Winston-Salem to Fred Madison and Alma Lee Crotts Hester. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 55 years, Donald E. Swain.
Surviving are her daughter, Janice Shanes of Clemmons; a brother, Kenneth Hester and wife Mary of Winston-Salem; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Lynn Brogdon and husband Jeff; great-grandchildren, Eden Camille Brogdon, Salem Sierra Brogdon and Jacob Chandler Brogdon, all of Greenville, S.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. October 8, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Lewisville-Clemmons Road, Clemmons.
James Ronald Hunt Sr.
James Ronald Hunt Sr., 80, of Winston-Salem died September 30 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born October 6, 1924, to John Ronald Hunt and Viola Stainback Hunt in Halifax County. He served in World War II as Seaman First Class in the U.S. Navy. After being discharged from the Navy in 1945, he owned several restaurants in Winston-Salem and then worked as a self-employed contractor until retirement. He was an avid NASCAR fan, longtime resident of the South Fork community and a recent resident of Lewisville. He was preceded in death by Rebecca “Joann” Ayers Hunt, Margaret Ransome, three brothers and three grandsons.
Surviving are five children, Judy Hunt Lovelace and husband Ronnie of Clemmons, Virginia Hunt Burke and husband Johnny of Pfafftown, Glenda Hunt Owens and husband Roger of Lewisville, James “Jim” Hunt Jr. and wife Ardene of Winston-Salem and Glenn Hunt and wife Linda of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Ronnie Hunt and wife Nancy of Winston-Salem and Earl Hunt and wife Carolyn of King; two stepchildren, Deborah Ayers Spriggs and husband Chris Charle of Clemmons and Brenda Ayers Lewis and husband David of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Mark Ayers and wife Marianne of Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory, with Rev. Justin Jones officiating. military rites were conducted by District 11 Memorial Honor Guard.
David Martin Scalise III
David Martin Scalise III, 31, of Winston-Salem died September 26 at his home. He was born on May 16, 1974, in Washington, D.C. He graduated from West Forsyth High School, where he was the soloist in the school band, and played at various events and church services during that time. He played the trumpet and numerous other band instruments, as well as being an accomplished pianist. A computer analyst, he had worked for Sara Lee for many years and was employed at Sara Lee at the time of his death. His deep love for his maternal grandparents, Jane P. and Loyd G. Holton, held him in the Winston-Salem area where he maintained his residence. “Grumpy” was very fond of his Sara Lee “ladies” and enjoyed playing pranks on them. His interest in writing computer games kept him busy outside of his employment; as well as his Internet circle of friends worldwide.
Surviving are his immediate family of maternal grandparents; his mother, J. Grace Holton; a sister, Stacy R. Azzouzi and husband Khadir, and their three children, Austin, Nicole and Tyler of Laurel, Md.; his maternal uncles, Loyd Holton and wife Sheila and son Gordon of Lexington, John Holton and wife Joyce of Mocksville and Eugene Holton and wife Donna and son Forrest of Rock Hill, S.C.; his aunt, Maureen H. Clayton and husband George and two children, Crystal and George “J.R.” of Mount Joy, Pa.; an xtended family of aunts, uncles and their children of the Patton families throughout Virginia; the Heinz family members in Pennsylvania; and Scalise family members in West Virginia.
A graveside service was held at Clemmons Moravian Church with Rev. Thomas Shelton officiating.
