Paul M. Pelletier
Paul M. Pelletier, 81, of Clemmons, passed away Friday, January 30, after a short illness. Paul was born in Springvale, ME, to Helen S. and Charles Pelletier. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and an Army veteran of the KoreanA War. He graduated from Bowden College, ME, and attended the University of Tennessee for his masters work. His favorite past time in retirement was being a golf ranger for Tanglewood golf course near his home in Clemmons.
Paul was well respected among his business associates, friends and family. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Leo. Paul is survived by his wife of 52 years Meriem G. Pelletier, daughters Becky Gershen (Larry), Bonnie McCoy (Kerry), Vicki Brewster (Jim), grandchildren Brian, Kristina, Katie, Meghan, Jessica and James Paul; his sisters Anita Pelletier, and Shirley Brocato (Bob), brother Leo Pelletier and many nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all.
Paul will be buried in the Veterans Cemetery in Springvale, ME, in the fall.

Mary L. Naughton
Mary L. Naughton, 80, died on February 16, 2009, at her home in Lewisville, NC. She was born on July 15, 1928, in Coalmont, IN. She was a graduate of Mishawaka High School in Mishawaka, IN, Class of 1946. She continued her education for two years at Indiana University. Mrs. Naughton and her family moved to Winston-Salem, NC, from Livonia, MI, thirteen years ago. She was a member of St. Leo’ s Parish, a member of the Golden Club and held the office of secretary. She was an avid bridge and pinochle player. She enjoyed traveling, reading, and shopping. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Joseph Michael Naughton, Jr. She is survived by her children, Barbara Naughton, Catherine Naughton, Cynthia Rooney and her husband, David, and J. Michael Naughton; two grandchildren, Michael and Caroline Rooney. A memorial service for Mrs. Naughton was held Friday, February 20, at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. The family requests that memorials be made to the American Diabetes. Association.

Alice P. Kiser
Mrs. Alice P. Kiser, 61, of Lewisville, passed away Thursday, February 19, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born October 2, 1947 in Ludlow, MA to Adel Ann Novakowski and Michael S. Pyzocha. She was employed by Wachovia Bank for 35 years and Volvo Financial Services for 8 years. Surviving are: her husband of 21 years, Kenneth K. Kiser of the home; two daughters, Penny Shackleford and husband, Richard of Rural Hall, Tammy Clontz and husband, Lee of Lexington; one son, Lee Kiser and wife, Lynn of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Danielle and Grayson Shackleford, Lexie and Karlee Clontz, Victoria Kiser; one brother, George Pyzocha of Hamdon, MA. A Graveside Service was conducted Saturday, February 21, 2009 at Parklawn Memorial Park with Minister Jerry Simpkins officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Society, 3801 Lake Boone Trail, Suite 190, Raleigh, N.C. 27607.

Robert Vernon Brookshire
Mr. Robert Vernon Brookshire, 82, of Lewisville passed away Friday, February 20, 2009 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born April 19, 1926 in Forsyth County to Joel Benjamin and Allie Davis Brookshire. Mr. Brookshire was a member of Advance First Baptist Church. He was retired from Piedmont Airlines with 33 years of service, and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He loved fishing and loved his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, J.B. Brookshire. Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Peggy Walker Brookshire; two daughters, Mary Sue Brookshire and husband Mark LeMay of La Mesa, California, and Becky Brookshire Davis and husband Eric of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Peyton and Riley Davis, Hannah and Isaac LeMay; two sisters, Annie Sue Russell and husband Ritchie of Winston-Salem, and Maxine Davis of Pfafftown; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, February 22 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. David Benton officiating. Burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or Advance First Baptist Church, 1938 NC Hwy 801 South, Advance, NC 27006.

Jud Sanford Kirby
MARYVILLE, Tenn. — Jud Sanford Kirby, age 87, of Maryville, passed away Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at his home. He was a member of Everett Hills Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army, a former member of the Blount County Commissioners, member of New Providence Masonic Lodge #128 , Knoxville Scottish Rite Bodies, Shriners, Kerbella Temple, and a former member of the TN National Guard. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman and Margaret Garner Kirby; several brothers and sisters. Survivors include his wife, Mildred Kirby; son and daughter-in-law, Larry Wayne, Sr. and Diane Kirby of Clemmons, N.C.; daughters and sons-in-law, Keryl and Wayne Sink, Mary and Mike Caylor, all of Maryville; grandchildren, Laura Kirby, Larry Wayne Kirby II, Elizabeth Cable, Jud Michael Caylor; great-grandchildren, Cailey Speer, Hannah Speer, Emma Grace Speer, Elijah Speer, Jeremiah Speer, Sophia Ruth Speer, Brandon Caudill, Hailey Caudill, Luke Caudill, Addison Kirby; sisters-in-law, Arletta Kirby of Chicago, Ill, Mary Kirby of Seymour; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Sunday at Everett Hills Baptist Church with Dr. John Franklin and Rev. R. M. Everett officiating. The interment followed in Grandview Cemetery. McKanna Elaine Young
McKanna Elaine Young, 15, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday afternoon February 18, 2009. She was born February 11, 1994. McKanna was a Ninth grade student at West Forsyth High School. She enjoyed school, being with her friends, dance class and most recently learning to play the guitar. McKanna was loved very much by her family and friends and will be in their hearts forever. Visitation was held on Tuesday February 24, 2009 at Vogler & Sons Funeral Home, Clemmons Chapel. Services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday February 25, 2009, at the funeral home chapel with Pastor Warren Kerr officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens.

Samuel Gregory “Sam” Byerly
Samuel Gregory “Sam” Byerly, 60 of Owens Park Street passed away Sunday, February 22, 2009 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born February 22, 1949 in Forsyth County to the late Chester Olin and Ella Mae Gregory Byerly. Sam enjoyed antiques, but he loved motorcycles. He loved building them, selling them, working on them, and the freedom of riding them. Surviving are his beloved son, whom he loved deeply, Samuel Gregory “Little Sam” Byerly, II of Lewisville; a granddaughter, Jordan Hall of Winston-Salem; his special friend and former wife, Margaret Laudien, Lewisville; two loving sisters, Darlene (Randy) Stewart, Winston-Salem; Ann (Gerald) Fletcher, Pfafftown; two half-brothers, Jim Byerly and Chester Byerly, Jr. both of Winston-Salem. His funeral service will be conducted 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, at Clemmons United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Parvin officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, before the service at the church. Burial will follow in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to express their gratitude to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home and Staff for all the loving care and support given to them during Sam’ s stay at their facility.

Janet Wilson Brooks
Janet Wilson Brooks, 79, of Clemmons died April 12. She retired from Lucent Technologies and was a member of First Assembly Church. She loved the sport of bowling. She was preceded in death by her parents, George W. and Rosa Lee Wilson; brothers Carl Wilson and Paul “Pete” Wilson; and sisters Mary Lucas and Louise Davidson Eaglin.
Surviving are her son, Marty L. Ogburn of Atlanta, Ga.; sisters Ann Marshall of Winston-Salem and Marie McMillen of Asheboro; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Memorial Funeral Chapel.

Sarah K. Gilliam
Sarah K. Gilliam, 86, of Pfafftown died April 11 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born March 23, 1917, in Salisbury to Marshell Killian and Cora Click Killian. She was a faithful member of Bethania AME Zion Church. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son; a daughter; and three brothers.
Surviving are sisters, Dorothy Morris and husband Dewitt and Martha Alexander Johnson of Salisbury; and a devoted sister-in-law, Helen S. Killian of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Bethania AME Zion Church with Rev. Johnny Ruff officiating, and burial followed in church cemetery.

Thurman Lowder Jarvis Sr.
Thurman “Nook” Lowder Jarvis Sr., 75, of Lewisville died April 16 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born November 6, 1927, in Forsyth County to John Franklin and Kate Lowder Jarvis. He was a member of Harmony Grove United Methodist Church and was retired from Western Electric with 40 years service. He was preceded in death by three brothers, James Jarvis, Roy Jarvis and John Raymond Jarvis Sr.
Surviving are his wife, Lorene Tesh Jarvis of the home; two sons, Thurman L. Jarvis Jr. and wife Kathy of Farmington, Steve Jarvis and wife Elizabeth of Wake Forest; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Carolyn Carter and husband Gene; and two brothers, Tenneyson “Bill” Jarvis and wife Glenola and Harold Jarvis and wife Mary.
Funeral services were held at Harmony Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary Ferrell and Rev. Jeff Priest, and burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.

William Morton Horne
William “Bill” Morton Horne, 79, of Pfafftown died April 15 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born December 4, 1923, in New Hanover County. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Eunice Patrick and Lucille Marshburn; a brother, Robert Horne; and a grandson, David Adams.
Surviving are his wife, Marian S. Horne of the home; a son, William R. Horne of Traphill; three daughters, Shirley Cruise and husband Richard of Baltimore, Md., Mary Meadows of Richmond, Va., and Cindie Marsch of Seaford, Del.; a daughter, Sandra Jeffares of Rockie Point; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald Ray Marshburn and wife Ann; and a sister, Betty Maynard and husband Alan of Wilmington.
Funeral services were held at Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel with Rev. Kevin Thompson officiating.

Hubert Wilson
Hubert Wilson, 81, of Lexington died April 13 at Lexington Health Care after an illness of seven months. He was born April 7, 1922, in Davidson County, to John Edwin Wilson and Maude Snider Wilson. He was a lifelong member of Tyro United Methodist Church, where he held many positions including board of trustees. He was a charter member of the Tyro Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Wilson was a U.S. Army veteran and served in World War II. He was retired from PPG and was preceded in death by a sister, Eunice Miller, and a grandson, Andrew James Wilson.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Lucille Surratt Wilson of the home; his son, Jeffery Wilson and wife Sherry of Tyro; his daughter, Beverly Khemlani and husband Sunder of Clemmons; and a grandson, Adam Scott Wilson.
Funeral services were held at Tyro United Methodist Church with Rev. Claude Kayler and Rev. Tim Roberts officiating, and burial followed at Bethel Cemetery.

Jack Wayne Flippin
Jack Wayne Flippin, 70, of Winston-Salem died April 8 at his home. He was born March 29, 1933, in Surry County to the late William Homer and Ella Reid Flippin. He was employed with Parks Chevrolet for more than 35 years and acquired a very close and lasting friendship with Hubert Parks, H.B. Foust and many others. He was very well-known and respected in the automobile business for more than 45 years and will be dearly missed. One of his many accomplishments included reaching the highest level of the General Motors Society of sales executives given nationally each year for the past 25 years in honor of his outstanding achievements. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Eric Duggins, and a brother, Palmer Flippin.
Surviving are his wife, Priscilla Kidd Flippin of the home; a daughter Gail Flippin Duggins and husband Randy of Winston-Salem; two sons, H. Lee Flippin and wife Gayle and David W. Flippin and wife Danita, all of Clemmons; five grandchildren, Wesley Duggins and wife Jodi, Kimberly Duggins, Adam and Zachary Flippin, and James Zahn; three stepchildren, Kevin Wagner and wife Leslie, Debbie Potts and husband Tony and Tammy Morris; seven stepgrandchildren; a sister, Pat Cheadle and husband Keith of Winston-Salem; four brothers, Taylor Flippin and wife Carol of Siloam, Jarvis Flippin and wife Judy of Oak Ridge, Tex Flippin and wife Barbara of Jonesboro, Ga. and Laymond Flippin and wife Diane of McGaheysville, Va.
A memorial service was held at Forsyth Friends Meeting with Steve Wood and Rev. Robert Stanton officiating.

Gwendolyn Darnell McQueen Johnson
First Lady Gwendolyn Darnell McQueen Johnson, 58, of Clemmons, the wife of Apostle Sylvester Davis Johnson, died April 17 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after an extended period of infirmity. She was a native of Winston-Salem, born September 10, 1944,to the late Elder Joseph Kelly McQueen and the late Mozelle Black McQueen. She was First Lady of the Macedonia TVPH Church of God, where she founded the Little Angels University Day Care Center Inc.; the Pulpit and Floral Guild Ministry; the Mother of the Year Pageant and the Youth Enrichment Week. She was also First Lady of the International Churches of Deliverance. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sylvetta Marcella Johnson.
Surviving are her husband of 37 years, Apostle Sylvester Davis Johnson of the home; a daughter, Faith Marie Swann and husband Carl of Cincinnati, Ohio; five grandchildren; two brothers, Kelly McQueen Jr. and wife Lillian and David C. McQueen, both of Winston-Salem; two aunts, Ollie Hamlin and Janie McQueen, both of Winston-Salem; her brothers, William Johnson and wife Ethelda of Buffalo, N.Y., Elder Daniel Johnson, Deacon Dennis Stancil and wife Pastor Alberta J. Stancil, Minister Catherline Johnson and Edward Johnson, all of Winston-Salem, Robert Johnson of Salisbury, Alphonso Johnson of New York, N.Y. and Bishop Raymond H. Gardner and wife Elder Angeline J. Gardner of Martinsville, Va.; an extended family including Pastor Todd Fulton and wife Judy and LaTonya Graham of Winston-Salem and Grace H. Johnson of Buffalo, N.Y.; and a host other relatives, her loving church family and many devoted acquaintances.
Funeral services were held at Macedonia TVPH Church of God with Bishop Freddie Marshall and Bishop Timothy Jackson officiating. Bishop Andre Sonny Woods was the eulogist. Entombment was at Piedmont Memorial Gardens

Beverly Ann Moore
Beverly Ann Moore, 49, of Winston-Salem died April 17 at her residence. She was born March 10, 1954, in Forsyth County, to Clarence Henry “Sam” Moore and Dorothy Key Moore. She was the Maplewood Practice manager for Novant Health Care. She served the Maplewood Group for 25 years in several capacities. She was preceded in death by her father, Clarence Henry “Sam” Moore; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Dock William Key and Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins Moore.
Surviving are her lifelong loving companion, Sammy Ray Slate of Lewisville; her mother, Dorothy Moore of Ararat; two sisters, Donna and husband Wayne Swift of State Road and Lisa and husband Kent Harris of Yadkinville; two brothers, Clarence Randolph “Randy” and wife Annette Moore and Jeffrey Eddie and wife Lisa Moore, all of Mount Airy; special nephews, Will Moore, Tony Harris, Matthew Harris, Ben Swift, Heath Moore and Nick Moore; special nieces, Patrina Moore, Rekenna Holt and Megan Swift; and special grandniece and nephews, Alexis Holt, Jacob McCombs and Braiden Lee Hunter.
Funeral services were held at the Pine Hill Friends Meeting with Dr. C.M. Worthy Jr. and Rev. Ed Sears officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.

Alonzo Van Gray Sr.
Alonzo Van Gray Sr., 86, of Clemmons died June 24 at his residence. He was born in Spalding County, Ga., January 21, 1917, to Charles and Annie Barron Gray. He was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church and was retired from Southern Railway with 36 years of service. He was a Mason and had served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Bonnell Dial Gray of Clemmons; two daughters, Louise McElwee and husband Wallace of Clemmons and Sandra Gray of Winston-Salem; a son, Van Gray and wife Alice of Roswell, Ga.; five grandchildren, Scott Dawson, Lynn Lassiter, Wallace McElwee Jr., Michael Gray and wife Dawn, and Marc Gray and wife Nicole; eight great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and several special nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Billy Dickerson officiating.

Louise Priddy Hall
Louise Priddy Hall, 80, of Germanton died June 23 at Universal Health Care in King. She was born June 14, 1923, in Stokes County to Frank Fleming and Lula Reed Priddy. She lived most of her life in Winston-Salem. She was a homemaker, and a wonderful mother and loving grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mark Allen Hall Jr.
Surviving are a daughter, Beth Smith and husband Jack of Germanton; two sons, Mark A. Hall and wife Jean of Clemmons and John C. Hall and wife Eileen of Winston-Salem; a sister, Betty Childress and husband C.B. of Elm City; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with Pastor Gary Priddy officiating, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park Cemetery.

Zana Hiatt Hyatt
Zana Hiatt Hyatt, 91, of Winston-Salem died June 25 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born September 13, 1911, in Davidson County to John T. and Effie Long Hiatt. She was a member of Midway United Methodist Church. She loved to cook for her family and was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence L. Hyatt Sr.; two brothers, George and Elwood Hiatt; and a daughter, Linda H. Cherry.
Surviving are a daughter, Virgie H. Parks and husband Mike of Clemmons; a son, C.L. Hyatt Jr. and wife Iris of Midway; four grandchildren, Wayne Cherry, Abby Fedor, Keith Parks and Kay Jarvis; seven great-grandchildren; and two special friends, Charlie Fletcher and Bob Cherry.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Bill Teague officiating, and burial followed at Midway United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Herbert F. Moore
Herbert F. Moore, 85, of Clemmons died June 24. He was born October 12, 1917, in Stokesdale to Ina Mae Boone Moore. He served in World War II as a lieutenant in naval intelligence from 1942 to 1945. After his release from active duty, he joined the Veterans Administration and served in responsible positions in Denver, Albuquerque, Chicago, Winston-Salem and Baltimore. In June of 1958, he transferred to the VA central office as chief, legislation and regulations section of the compensation and pension service before being promoted to assistant director for policy and planning. He served as a member of the VA’s advisory council in Washington, D.C. In 1963, he began training for hospital administration at the VA hospital in Hines, Ill. He then served as director of the VA center in Togus, Maine, before returning to central office, where he was director of the insurance service. He completed his career with the Veterans Administration as director of the VA hospital in Pittsburg, Pa., and as director of the VA hospital in Charleston, S.C. After leaving federal service, he was director of the Alcoholic Rehabilitation Center in Black Mountain and was the administrator of Hillhaven Convalescent Center in Asheville. He was preceded in death by his sister, Matro Moore of Stokesdale.
Surviving are his wife, Loretta, of the home; sons Wayland Moore of Lynchburg, Va., and Ray Moore of Salem, Va.; daughters Gayle Hinton and husband Rick of Manassas, Va., and Joan Rizek and husband Allen of Fairfax, Va.; grandchildren Dan Moore, Will Moore, Seth Moore, Benjamin Moore, Kelly Hinton, Moriah Moore, Jack Rizek and Calvin Rizek; a brother, Wayland Moore of Boca Raton, Fla.; and a nephew, Wayland Moore Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller-Kinderton Chapel, and burial followed at Parklawn Memorial Gardens.

Maxine Caughman Latham-Allen
Maxine Caughman Latham-Allen, 73, of Clemmons, formerly of West Columbia, S.C., died June 25 at her home. She was born October 28, 1929 in Lexington County, S.C. to Jesse and Lois Price Caughman. She was a member of Westview Baptist Church and a member of the Clemmons Chapter of the Eastern Star. She was an avid bowler. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Ralph Latham; and a brother, Richard Caughman.
Surviving are her husband, William E. “Gene” Allen of the home; two sons, Rick Latham and wife Rhonda of Van Nuys, Ca. and W.R. “Bill” Latham Jr. and wife Rebecca of Germany; and three grandchildren, Steven and Michael Latham of Germany and Tori Latham of Van Nuys.
Funeral services were held at Westview Baptist Church with Dr. Carlton T. Mitchell officiating. A graveside service was held at Southland Memorial Gardens in West Columbia, S.C.

Carmen Socorro Velez
Carmen Socorro Velez of Clemmons died June 26 at her home. She was born in Puerto Rico, but had lived in Clemmons for the past five years.
Surviving are her devoted husband, Ruben Velez; a daughter, Susan Napoleoni of New York, N.Y.; three grandchildren; two special cousins, Tita Rentas and Margie Ramirez of Florida; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Kenneth Yarbrough of Orange, Tex.; and many friends in New Jersey, New York and North Carolina.
A memorial service was held at Memorial Funeral Chapel.

Jettie Transou Lemons
Jettie Transou Lemons, 66, of Clemmons died June 26. She was born April 28, 1937, in Virginia to Frank Monroe Transou Jr. and Florence Small Transou. A son, Edward Brown Raper, and her parents preceded her in death.
Surviving are her husband, Ronnie Lemons of the home; two brothers, Frank M. Transou III and wife Gail of Advance and Ray G. Transou and wife Kathy G. of Farmington; two sisters, Terry Ann Branscomb of Yadkinville and Barbara Marshall of Danville, Va.; a brother-in-law, David Lemons of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Mike and wife Kristina, and Susan and Bryan; a great-granddaughter, Haley; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel in Advance with Rev. Hubert Wishon officiating, and burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
