BEANE

LEXINGTON - Mosell Smith, 88, died Monday at Rowan Regional Medical Center. A funeral will be Thursday at Churchland Baptist Church. Davidson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BOHRER

Mr. Charles Ellsworth Bohrer, 91, formerly of 402 Beverly Drive, Statesville died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Charles was born Sept. 14, 1910, in Camden, N.J. to the late Charles Frederick Bohrer and Florence Ketchem Foster. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sylvia Elder Bohrer; a son, Charles Harrison Bohrer and his wife, Connie of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Marilyn Bohrer Gregory and her husband, Tom of Statesville; and four grandchildren, Kimberly Gregory Snow and her husband, Chris of Statesville, Brian Elliott Bohrer of Boone and Thomas Warren Gregory Jr. and Jennifer Anne Bohrer, both of Raleigh. Charles was the oldest of seven siblings. Preceding him in death were a brother, Edward Francis Bohrer; and sisters Florence Doris Virtue and Viola Delores Coffin. Surviving him are his sister, Mildred Mae Virtue of Locust; and brothers Wilmer Roland Bohrer of Pennsauken, N.J. and Earl Bohrer of Oaklynn,N.J. Charles moved his family to Statesville in March of 1958, when Hunt Manufacturing, the company with which he worked, was relocated to North Carolina. Charles began his career at Hunt Feb. 10, 1941, and retired Dec. 31, 1975, after 34 years of dedicated service. A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, Jan.12, 2002, at Broad Street United Methodist Church, where he was a longtime member. The Rev. Rob Rollins will be officiating the service. The family will receive friends in the memorial hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Broad Street United Methodist Church; or a local chapter of Hospice.

BOWMAN

PINNACLE - Mr. Richard Warney Bowman, 77, of 3820 Old Highway 52, passed away Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at his residence. He was born May 13, 1924, in Patrick County to Warney and Sissi Owens Bowman. Mr. Bowman was a retired farmer and of the Baptist faith. He is survived by his wife, Audrey Holt Bowman of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Lucy B. and O'Neal McHone of Pinnacle; three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard Carol and Brenda Bowman, Donnie Lee and Kathie Bowman and Ronald Gray Bowman, all of Pinnacle; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at the Cox-Needham Chapel conducted by the Rev. Bobby Joe Shinault and the Rev. Timothy Campbell. Interment will follow in the Volunteer Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002. The Bowman family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Pilot Mountain.

CHAMBERS

ROARING GAP - Mr. James C. Chambers, 75, the husband of Allene Chambers, died Dec. 19 at Northern Hospital of Surry County. A memorial service was held Dec. 22 at First Baptist Church in Sparta. Arrangements by Grandview Funeral Home.

COLLINS

HAMPTONVILLE - Mrs. Cleo Zenith Davis Collins, 60, of Marler Road, passed away Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. She was born April 29, 1941, in Wilkes County. Mrs. Collins was a homemaker and a member of Marler Road Baptist Church. Surviving are her former husband, David Scotty Collins; her children, Danny Ray (Robin) Collins, Ricky Collins and Jimmy Dean Collins, all of Hamptonville; Deborah Collins of Mocksville and Scotty Mitchell Collins of Pensacola, Fla.; and 10 grandchildren, Sebrina Brown, Robert "Bubba" Reveles, Brandon Collins, Lindsay Collins, Victoria Reveles, Nicole Collins, Justin Collins, Jeremy Collins, Megan Collins and Joseph Collins. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Marler Road Baptist Church by the Rev. Randy Johnson. She will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Little Mountain Road, Jonesville.

DAVIS

Ms. Connie Lee Davis, formerly of E. 23rd St., departed this life Thursday evening, Jan. 3, 2002, at the Winston-Salem Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center following a lengthy illness. She was a native of Lancaster, S.C., and a resident of Winston-Salem for most of her life, where she was a retiree of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and of the Baptist faith. She was predeceased by a son, Hobart T. Davis; and three brothers, Andrew V. Davis, Sammie Davis and L.K. Davis. Survivors include four daughters, Shirley Durant of Winston-Salem, Margaret Allen of Silver Spring, Md., and Connie Mae Stephens and Maxine Morgan, both of Winston-Salem; a son, George S. Durant of Connecticut; 30 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ivory Davis of Charlotte; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at the Hooper Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. R.L. Anderson officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service hour at the funeral home, and other times may be contacted at 1412 Underwood Ave. (Hooper)

DOBSON

HICKORY - Mr. James "Jimmy" Kenneth Dobson Jr., 46, of 1601 NE Fourth St., formerly of Winston-Salem passed away Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, in Hickory. He attended Carver High School and was employed by Sherrill Furniture Co. in Hickory. He was a former member of Phillips Chapel Baptist Church and was a member of the Living World Fellowship, Hickory. He was preceded in death by his father, James K. Dobson Sr. He is survived by his parents, Doris H. (Freeman) Roebuck of Winston-Salem; a son, Airman 2nd Class Jamar Dobson of Shaw Air Force Base, Sumter, S.C.; a daughter, Adrienne Mattison of Winston-Salem; five sisters, Christine H. Davis of Winston-Salem, Janice D. Robin-son Fulwood of Mitchellville, Md., Gina L. (George) Lamar of Clinton, Md., and Celina D. (Willie) Crawley and Regina D (Robert) Johnson, both of Winston-Salem; a brother, Vin-cent L. Roebuck of Louisville, Ky.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert L. McGowen Sr. officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery. GARDNER

Mr. John H. Gardner Jr. died Monday morning, Jan. 7, 2002, at the Prince Nursing Care Center of Brookridge Baptist Retirement Home. He and his wife of 541/2 years, Marjorie Wilson Gardner, had lived in loving care at Brookridge for 41/2 years. Mr. Gardner was born Dec. 1, 1924, in Wilson, the only child of John H. and Louise Curtis Gardner. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the European Theater of Operations in the Army Air Corps. He was retired from W.A. Adams Tobacco Co. Inc. in Oxford as an assistant vice president in foreign and domestic sales. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Winston-Salem. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, to whom he was devoted; his son, John H. Gardner III and wife Meg, their daughters Martha and Ashley; three daughters, Ellen Barrier and husband Gene and their sons Thomas and Gardner and Gardner's wife Heather, all of Winston-Salem; Kathy Gardner and her son Wilson Matheson, her daughter Blair Matheson; and their youngest daughter Mary Davie and husband Stanley Speckhard and their sons John, Gordon and Eric, all of Greensboro. The legacy Mr. Gardner left to his wife, children and grandchildren was his love at all times. A memorial service at 12 noon, Wednesday Jan. 9, 2002, will be held in Feezor Auditorium at Brookridge Retirement Center. It is requested that memorials be made to the Employee of the Month Fund at Brookridge Retirement Center, 1199 Hayes Forest Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106; or Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem NC 27103, both of whom cared lovingly for Mr. Gardner. A private burial service will be held at Salem cemetery.

HAWKS

YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Myrtle Marion Hawks, 87, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Yadkin Nursing Center. She was born Nov. 3, 1914, in Surry County to the late Doctor Banner and Flora McMillan Marion. She was the wife of the late Walter M. Hawks of Old Highway 421 W. She was of the Baptist faith. She had spent the majority of her life in Yadkin County. She was employed at Hoots Memorial Hospital for several years. Mrs. Hawks enjoyed her quilting with the Yadkin County Quilters for many years. They quilted a wall hanging for the Hoots Hospital Lobby. She also enjoyed her flowers. She was a devoted and loving mother to her eight children, also she enjoyed being a grandmother and great-grandmother. Surviving are her children, Mrs. Louise Wagoner of Boonville, Mr. Charles Marcus (Margie) Hawks of Yadkinville, Mrs. Betty (Donald) Groce of Hamptonville, Mrs. Brenda (Scotty) Fullerton of Yadkinville, Mrs. Faye H. Hunter of East Bend and Mr. Donald (Marie) Hawks, Mr. Michael (Janice) Hawks and Mr. Robbie "Robert" Hawks, all of Yadkinville; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Also a host of friends and neighbors, who visited her faithfully during her illness. Mrs. Hawks was preceded in death by her sister, Lela Marion of Cana, Va. Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at the Gentry Family Funeral Service Chapel, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville, by the Rev. Clint Branch, the Rev. Sammy Shoaf and the Rev. David Fullerton. She will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in Yadkin Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. The family expresses their gratitude for all the love shown to them and their mother by the community, and especially to all the staff and workers and friends at the Yadkin Nursing Center. Thanks! LERIE

KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Kimberly Millikan Lerie, 40, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at her residence. Mrs. Lerie was born June 13, 1961, in Guilford County a daughter of Emmett "Wayne" and Barbara Ann Griffin Millikan of Colfax. She was a 1979 graduate of East Forsyth High School and had been employed at the restaurant of Countryside Bowling Lane since 1988. She was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Louis Lerie of the home; a sister, Teresa Anderson of Kernersville; two brothers, Clifford Millikan and Keith Millikan, both of Colfax; two nieces, Josie Millikan and Amy Trent; and a nephew, Jeremy Bowles. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel by the Rev. William Bowman. Burial will be in Mount Gur cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

McNEIL

ADVANCE - Mr. Richard Franklin "Frank" McNeil, 68, passed away Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Feb. 4, 1933, in Wilkes County to the late George S. and Mary Eller McNeil. Mr. McNeil was retired from the trucking division of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Nuremberg, Germany, and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he served as a preschool Bible fellowship teacher. Surviving are his wife, Betty McMichael McNeil of the home; a son, Richard Franklin McNeil Jr. and wife Terri of Advance; a daughter, Beverly Abercrombie and husband Gray of Purlear; four granddaughters and a grandson, who were the delight of his life; two sisters, Pearl Johnson and Anita Johnson and husband Howard, all of Purlear; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Gary Chapman and the Rev. Richard Everhart officiating. Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church in Purlear by the Rev. Darrell Poole. Flowers will be accepted of memorials may be made to New Hope Baptist Church, Purlear, NC 28665.

MURPHY

EAST BEND -Mr. Eddie Gray Murphy, 69, of 4208 Martins Mill Road, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Yadkin County on May 26, 1932, to Benjamin and Lela Davis Murphy. Mr. Murphy was a retired carpenter and mechanic. Surviving are two daughters, Regina Murphy Johnson and Edwina Murphy, both of Winston-Salem; his former wife and lifelong friend, Margaret Murphy Hayden of Winston-Salem; a stepdaughter, Debbie Marsh of Winston-Salem; two stepsons, Ken and Dennis Sizemore, both of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Evelyn Dunn and Nell Ray Suddreth, both of Advance; a special friend, Lawrence Ramsey; four grandchildren, Amie and Jamie Johnson, Kristi Moore and Dwayne Sizemore; and two great-grandchildren, Issac and Gina Tate. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend by the Rev. Brian Mullins. Burial will follow in the Prospect United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

PORTER

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Mr. Jessie O. Porter, 83, of 183 N. Dean St. died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, in the Dorn Veterans Administration Hospital in Columbia, S.C., after an extended illness. Born in Burlington, he was the son of the late Melvin Seth Thomas Porter and Emma Jane Poole Porter. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army and was a prisoner of war in Germany for 11 months and 29 days. He had served as chaplain of VFW Post No. 9539 of Spartanburg, was a member of Piedmont Chapter No. 1, American Ex-Prisoner of War and the Spartanburg Moose Lodge No. 2363. He was a Lutheran. Mr. Porter was employed with Bahnson Heating and Air Conditioning in Winston-Salem and later worked with Kirkland Heating and Air. Surviving are his wife, Sarah Jane Wilson Porter of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Darryl H. and Rachel K. Porter of Granite Quarry; a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl Porter Owen and Clifford Owen of Winston-Salem; four stepchildren, Wanda Evans of Athens, Tenn., John Chandler Jr. of Cleveland, Tenn., Virginia Wallace of Lowden, Tenn., and Penny Bandy of Lenoir City, Tenn.; three sisters, Rachel P. Wilson, Dorothy P. Simpson and Myrtle P. Starting, all of Burlington; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and 10 stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by six brothers, Frank, Pearl, Paul, Ollie, Grady and Arthur Porter. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at the Lanford-Pollard Chapel conducted by Dr. Kirk H. Neely. Interment will follow in the Heritage Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the VFW Post No. 9539, P.O. REINKE

Mr. Jerry Gilbert Reinke, 85, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at his home. Mr. Reinke was born Sept. 12, 1916, in Milwaukee, Wis. He worked 40 years for Square D Co., both in Milwaukee and Asheville, where he was a supervisor of shipping/receiving and other areas. Surviving are his wife, Jane; daughter Mrs. Joanne Buckner and husband Kirk; two granddaughters, Christina and Caroline Buckner; two brothers, Bill Reinke of Redmond, Wash., and Harvey Reinke of La Mirada, Calif.; and a sister, Alice Swayer of Lometo, Calif. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Knollwood Baptist Church on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002. The family will greet visitors after the service. There will be a scattering of cremains at Big Muskego Lake outside of Milwaukee, Wis.

ROBERTS

Mrs. Louise T. Roberts, passed away Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born June 22, 1907, and was a native of Winston-Salem and attended the local public schools. She was a member of United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, where she was active in the senior missionary and usher boards. She was an avid bowler and loved to cook and crochet. Mrs. Roberts was married to the late Roy C. Roberts for 27 years. She is survived by four nieces, Ms. Dewitt Ingram and Ms. Leatrice Stevenson of Charlotte, and Ms. Mocille Chisolm and Ms. Margaret Pitts of Winston-Salem; a nephew, Mr. Robert Mason Jr. of Winston-Salem; two great-nieces, Ms. Cassandra Roberts of Winston-Salem and Ms. Tywanda Parker of Prince George, Va.; a devoted friend, Mrs. Rhea Thompson of Greensboro; and a host of great-great-nieces and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. J. Donald Ballard officiating. Family visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until the funeral hour. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. (Brown's)

ROBERTS

Mrs. Mary Beth Markland Roberts of 131 Rosedale Circle died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Winston-Salem on Sept. 7, 1930, to Mary Elizabeth and George Edward Markland. She graduated from Hanes High School in 1948 and was salutatorian of her class. She was a legal secretary for most of her working life. She spent a good deal of her time rescuing animals and placing them for adoption, caring for elderly people, helping people who came from other counties in finding jobs and in teaching them English. She was a member of Fairview Moravian Church for most of her life and served on the board of elders for two terms. Later she became an associate member of Fairview. She formed and was the president of the University Homeowners Association, which helped in making life in the community better, and for her efforts was nominated for a Jefferson Award. She received a Certificate of Recognition for Extraordinary Public Service in March of 2000. She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Stuart Dixon Roberts Sr.; three daughters, Deborah G. Schwarz, Betsy Williams and Kristin Shamel; two stepsons, Stuart Dixon Roberts Jr. and Robin Roberts; and a stepdaughter, Deborah Susan Greene; a brother, Bill Markland and his wife Jackie; grandchildren Sarah and Eli Schwarz, Aaron and Noah Shamel, Rachel and Aaron Roberts, Margo Church, Mechelle Greene and Sonya Burns; a great-grandchild; several nephews and nieces; and her beloved dog, "Robbie". Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 10, 2002, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Moravian Graveyard in Old Salem. Memorials may be made to Fairview Moravian Building Fund, Fairview Moravian Church, 6550 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27106; Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, Kanab, UT 84741-5000; or to a charity of the donor's choice.

SCHWEERS

CHARLOTTE - Andrew Philip Schweers, 58, and his wife, Linda Marie Schweers, 57, formerly of Winston-Salem, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, from injuries as the result of an auto accident. Phil was born in Augusta, Ga., and moved to Charlotte with Linda 30 years ago. He was a graduate of N.C. State University and was an executive vice president with Motion Industries of Birmingham, Ala. Phil and Linda met in high school in Winston-Salem and they were married in 1963. Phil was attending Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte. Linda was born in Winston-Salem, was employed as a bookkeeper and also volunteered with the Salvation Army. Linda and Phil were very active at The Little Church on the Lane. They shared a strong faith in God and affected the lives of many of those who they ministered to. Survivors include their son, Brad Schweers and his wife, Julie of Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren Ali and Brooke Schweers; Linda's brother, Richard Reavis and his wife, Betty; and nieces Sherri Clodfelter and Marie McLucas. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Thurs-day, Jan. 10, 2002, at The Little Church on the Lane with the Rev. Steve Wilson officiating. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Little Church on the Lane, 528 Moravian Lane, Charlotte, NC 28207; the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 31128, Charlotte, NC 28231; or Deane Labs. Harry and Bryant Co. Funeral Directors is serving the Schweers family.
