THOMASVILLE - Mrs. Mary Jones Doby, 89, the wife of the Rev. Elgin Doby, died Friday at Tru-Care Assisted Living Center in Archdale. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel.

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Jesse Edgar Edwards, 85, died Friday. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy.
FITZ-SIMONS
A memorial service for Marion Fitz-Simons and a Celebration of the Life will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, in the auditorium at Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community, North Village, 1500 Sawmill Road, Raleigh. The family will receive friends at a reception which will follow the service in the great room, which is adjacent to the dining room.
GAITHER
MOCKSVILLE - Mr. William Eugene Gaither, 70, of 1938 Highway 64 East died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem after being seriously ill for several weeks and in declining health for a year. Mr. Gaither was born March 17, 1931, in Mocksville to the late Frank E. and Ruth Barker Gaither. Mr. Gaither was a graduate of Davie County Training School in Mocksville and attended Saint Augustine College and North Carolina A&T State University. He was a retired employee of Wachovia Bank & Trust in Winston-Salem. He was a member of Saint John's AME Zion Church in Mocksville, chairman of the trustee board, a member of the usher board, Men's Booster Club, Corinthian Lodge #17, PHA in Mocksville, Davie County Chapter of the NAACP and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife, Magalene Dulin Gaither, of the home; a stepson, Eric Hudson, Sr., of Salisbury; a stepdaughter, Shanlon Hudson of Winston-Salem; brothers Nathaniel Williams of Mocksville, Bishop Milton Williams of Maryland and Barry Williams of Greensboro; sisters Brenda White of Kernersville and Julia Banks of Greensboro; three stepgrandchildren and three great-stepgrandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Saint John AME Zion Church in Mocksville with the Rev. Anthony Freeman, pastor, and the Rev. Dr. Milton White, Jr., eulogist, officiating. Visitation will be held at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Noble & Kelsey Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of the services.
GRADY
KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Kathy Darlene Weavil Grady, 53, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Grady was born Sept. 18, 1948, in Forsyth County, a daughter of Fair Weavil and the late Mary Vanhoy Weavil. She was a member of Sedge Garden United Methodist Church and the former president and treasurer of the United Methodist Women of the church. Her lifelong profession was in banking. Surviving are a son, Robert Jason Grady of the home; her father, Fair Weavil of Kernersville; a brother and sister-in-law, Ricky and Patricia Weavil of Pfafftown, and a niece, Rebecca Weavil. She is also survived by a large extended family who were very special to her. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ed Biggers and the Rev. Cory Miller. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home. PILOT MOUNTAIN - Mr. Thomas Junior Hall, 77, husband of Hallie Inman Hall, of 1965 Brown Mountain Road passed away Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Northern Hospital in Surry County. He was born Sept. 2, 1924, in Stokes County to the late Paul Jim and Maude Mae Bennett Hall. Mr. Hall was a retired employee of Surry Industries Inc., a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre, a member of the King American Legion Post 290 and a member of Volunteer Primitive Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Hallie Inman Hall, of the home; eight sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean Brooks of Lexington, Otelia and James Sims of Lexington, Elsie and Bobby Hooker of Westfield, Gladys Lambert of Lexington, JoAnn and Paul Cromer of Lexington, Stella Byerly of Lexington, Kay and Howard Harris of Lexington and Sue Spears of Lexington; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Marvin Hall of Snead Ferry, Roger Hall of Lexington and the Rev. Ray Hall and wife Vernell of Thomasville; a special niece, Mary Grody Bowman of Pilot Mountain. Mr. Hall was preceded in death by a brother, Glenn Hall. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Brim's Grove Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Robbie Stevens, the Rev. Wallace Gibson, Elder Vance Jones and Elder Weldon Joyce. Burial with full military honors conducted by King American Legion Post 290 in King will follow in Brim's Grove Baptist Church cemetery. LEXINGTON - Alma Swing Leonard, 90, the wife of the late Paul Waitman Leonard, died Saturday at Lexington Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel.
LEWIS
Ms. Geraldine Barbara "Gerri" Lewis, 69, of 400 Bacon St. passed away Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center following a period of illness. She was born May 14, 1932, to Mattie Hall Lewis and the late Johnny Clifton Lewis. She attended Emmanuel Lutheran Boarding School in Greensboro and attended William Penn High School in Philadelphia, Pa. Gerri worshipped at Berean Baptist Church while in Philadelphia. Upon returning to Winston-Salem, she joined Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church where she was a faithful member until her health declined. She is survived by her loving mother, Mattie Lewis of the home; a host of devoted cousins, other relatives, godsisters, church family, caregivers, attentive neighbors and many friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, from the Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church with Elder Moses L. Edwards Sr. officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery. Ruth Brown Mays, formerly of 107-A Westgate Circle, died Jan. 3, 2002. Born on Oct. 16, 1918, in Winston-Salem, she was the daughter of the late Lily Mae and Luther Brown. Ruth was an honored employee of Western Electric Co. She was an active and devoted member of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church. Ruth dearly loved her many friends and lived her life in kind service to others. Her faith and selflessness was an inspiration to those who knew her. Ms. Mays was preceded in death by her brother, Mack David Brown, and is survived by her niece, Carol Hauser; nephew Robert L. Brown; and sister-in-law, Ruby Brown. Lynn Parsley and Kathy Ausen were blessed to know and assist her during her years of failing health. Thanks to Wilma Rogers and the caretakers at Claire Bridge who showed Ruth tenderness and great care during her last months. A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church with the Rev. John Shields officiating. PINNACLE - Mrs. Nellie Virginia Kennedy Parker, 71, of 1030 Willow Creek Drive died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born in McDowell County, W.Va., on Oct. 14, 1930, to the late Fred and Cassie Lockhart Kennedy. Mrs. Parker was retired from the home health-care services and was a member of Christian Community Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and James Marshall of Kernersville and Lenora and Allen Boothe of Pinnacle; three sons and daughters-in-law, Freddy Thomas Parker of Winston-Salem, Gregory Steven and Debra Parker of Kernersville and Bradley and Renee Parker of Clemmons; seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth Deskins and Barbara Kennedy, both of Iaeger, W.Va., and Pat and Ronnie Lambert of Arlington, Va., and a brother, Richard Kennedy of Ravenna, Ohio. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Parker was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas Parker, daughter, Melissa Ruth Parker, granddaughter, Amanda Dawn Parker and brothers, Calvin and Freddy Kennedy. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at Christian Community Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Kevin Harris with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Mr. William Edward Pigford of 2306 Greenway Ave. passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at the John Umstead Hospital in Butner. He was born Aug. 17, 1957, to Amos E. Pigford and Thelma Jarrett Pigford in Winston-Salem. He was a former member of Union Chapel Baptist Church and a graduate of North Forsyth High School, Class of 1975. He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved parents, Amos and Thelma Pigford of the home; a dear brother, Ronald E. Pigford; a loving sister, Evelyn Rose Pigford Acree and her husband J. Frederick Acree; his grandmother, Irene Jarrett; two aunts, Juanita Fisher of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Earnestine Wardlow of Winston-Salem; two uncles, Richard Jarrett and Leander Pigford, both of Winston-Salem; a very special great-aunt, Mrs. Milrose Shores of Winston-Salem; nieces, Rhonda Smith and Alexus Acree; a nephew, Jeremiah Pigford; and many dear family members and friends. A very special thanks to doctors, nurses and caregivers at John Umstead Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, in the chapel of the Russell Funeral Home with the Rev. Konnie G. Robinson officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery. PORTER
Frank Porter died on Jan. 4, 2002, at Salemtowne, The Moravian Retirement Center. He was born in Santa Monica, Calif., on April 10, 1919, to Frank R. and Eunice Marshall Porter. While attending Chaffey Junior College in Ontario, Calif., he received his commercial pilot license through the Civilian Training Program. He entered the Marine Corps in January 1941 as an aviation cadet, received his wings and was commissioned in June 1941. While serving as a naval flight instructor in Corpus Christie, Texas, he met Lorene Baker, whom he married in May 1942. He spent 20 months in the Solomons as a dive-bomber pilot. He also flew dive-bomber missions in the Korean Conflict. Frank's greatest pleasure in life was flying airplanes, and he always took every opportunity to fly different planes and was able to fly several Air Force-type planes. He logged almost 6,000 hours. His decorations included two Distinguished Flying Crosses and 12 air medals. Frank retired in July 1967 and moved to Winston-Salem, N.C., where he served as business administrator of First Presbyterian for 12 years. While living in Winston-Salem, he served on the board of Full Gospel Business Fellowship and was instrumental in starting several Bible studies that met in their home. He later moved to Charlotte and worked as business administrator of Resurrection Lutheran Church for almost four years. Upon final retirement Frank moved to Lake Norman, where he was able to pursue his favorite sport of water skiing as well as teaching many others the sport. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lorene of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Gloria Latham and husband David of Greensboro, Mrs. Elizabeth Lattimore and husband Don of Salisbury; two grandchildren, Mrs. Deborah Brown and James Latham; two grandsons, Daniel and Thomas Lattimore of Salisbury and two sisters in California. INDEPENDENCE, Va. - Jimmy Phipps Todd, 51, of Blacksburg, Va., and formerly of Independence, Va., passed away Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at his residence in Blacksburg, Va. He was born Dec. 21, 1950, in Roanoke, Va., to Jim J. and Stella Phipps Todd. He was a television systems engineer with Video Broadcast Services of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. Surviving are his parents, Jim J. and Stella Todd of Independence, Va.; two brothers, Alan Todd and wife Mickey of Independence, Va., and Dr. Mark Todd and wife Cynthia of Salem, Va.; three nephews, Jason Todd and Jonathan Todd, both of Independence, Va., and Jackson Todd of Salem, Va.; two nieces, Hannah Todd and Mary Kathryn Todd, both of Salem, Va. The body is at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with interment in Fox cemetery. The Rev. Hal Eaton and Doug Turner will officiate. Baby boy Calvin Alexander Wallace, Jr., passed on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Piedmont Memorial Gardens with the Rev. James M. Sloan officiating. If weather is bad, services will be held at Beasley's Chapel and then at Piedmont for burial. He is survived by his parents, Rovenia West and Calvin A. Wallace, Sr., of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Armani Wallace and Teresa West; an uncle, DeCarlos West; an aunt, Arial Bailey; grandmothers Sophonia Wallace and Teresa West; grandfathers Terron Bailey, William Hardy and Reginald Covington; great-grandmothers Annie Lee Wallace and Annie Davis; great-grandfather Dennis West; godmother Shu Douthit, all of Winston-Salem; a host of relatives and other friends. WOOTEN
NORTH WILKESBORO - Mr. Ralph Lee Wooten, 87, of Finley Avenue, the husband of the late Violet Tulburt Wooten, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at First United Methodist Church of North Wilkesboro, with Dr. Sydnor Thompson III officiating. Burial will be in the Millers Creek United Methodist Church cemetery on Highway 16. Mr. Wooten was born July 15, 1914, in Watauga County to Richard L. and Minnie Triplett Wooten. He was a master salesman. From 1948 to 1962 Ralph was a partner in B&L Motor Co. in North Wilkesboro, one of the most successful Cadillac and Oldsmobile dealerships in the southeast. In 1965 he joined Koons Ford in Falls Church, Va., and became one of the top Ford salesmen in history. Over his 30-year career with Koons Ford, he was six times a Top Hatter, a sales specialist for 10 years, and a Grand Master Salesman for 14 years. In 1979 Ford Motor Co. honored Ralph by featuring his goals and accomplishments in a motivational documentary training film. In 1991, he broke Ford's exclusive 10,000-unit barrier to become Ford's No. 1 all-time retail sales professional. In 1994, Ralph returned to Wilkes County and continued to sell Fords at Yadkin Valley Motor Co. in North Wilkesboro and from April 1999 until his recent illness continued to sell cars for Premier Chevrolet in Wilkesboro. Mr. Wooten was preceded in death by two brothers, Leslie and James Wooten. He is survived by a daughter, Julia Lovette of Atlanta, Ga.; a son, Charles Richard Wooten of Millers Creek; two sisters, Marie Proffit of Lenoir and JoAnn Walsh of Ferguson; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
