Peggy Jean Todd Spillman
Peggy Jean Todd Spillman, 74, of Yadkinville died January 28. She was born in Yadkin County on June 25, 1932, to William and Louisa Shermer Todd. She was a member of Maplewood Baptist Church. She worked for her father for 25 years at Yadkin Furniture Co. and continued her career with State Farm Insurance Co. She was devoted to her work at State Farm. Since May, she enjoyed outings with her new friendships with the Red Hat Society. She loved gardening.
Surviving are two daughters, Lori Phillips and husband Fred of East Bend and Marti Utter of Shacktown; two grandchildren, Brittany Hall Phillips of East Bend and Chase Utter of Shacktown; six sisters, Lou Hutchens and husband Paul, Nellie Hall and husband Garlon, Frieda Pepper and husband Fred, and Gloria Long and husband Benny, all of Yadkinville, Norma Johnson of Clemmons, and Sandra Gianini and husband Paul of Port Orange, Fla.; a brother, William D. Todd and wife Lisa of Yadkinville; special friends, Joy Stinson, Ruth Lakey, Denise Buschman, and her numerous colleagues from State Farm Insurance.
Funeral services were held at Maplewood Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy Lancaster and Rev. Henry May officiating. Burial followed at Yadkin Memorial Gardens.
Patricia Leigh Fleming Lackey
Patricia Leigh Fleming Lackey, 66, formerly of Statesville, died January 29 at Avante Nursing Home in North Wilkesboro. She was born August 29, 1940, in Iredell County, the daughter of Florence Martin Williams of Banner Elk, and the late Earl Fleming. She was a member of New Perth A.R.P. Church, Troutman. She was employed as a librarian at the Statesville Library.
Surviving are two sons, Lee Lackey and wife Lisa of Clemmons and Joseph Lackey of Charleston, S.C.; two grandchildren, Chloe and Tristan Lackey of Clemmons; a sister, Sandra McRacken and husband Jim of Statesville; and former husband Robert Lackey.
Funeral services were held at Troutman Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mark McClamrock officiating. A private burial was held at the Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville.
Clifford Franklin Lambeth
Clifford “Nick” Franklin Lambeth, 64, of Winston-Salem died February 1 at his home where he lived with his brother-in-law, Clyde Maurer, and sister-in-law, Carolyn Maurer. He was born April 28, 1942, in Forsyth County to the late Woodrow B. and Daisy Ann Rominger Lambeth. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 22 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Thompson Lambeth; a sister, Phenie Mills, and a sister-in-law, Simone Lambeth.
Surviving are a sister, Doris Slater and husband Harvey of Winston-Salem; a brother, Robert M. Lambeth of Clarksville Tenn.; four stepchildren, Becky Cranfill and Diana Thompson, both of Winston-Salem, and Carol Ruth Finlay and Jesse Thompson, both of Clemmons; seven stepgrandchildren; 11 nieces and nephews; and a special niece, Janet Kimrick and husband Rodney of Georgia.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Harold Fletcher officiating. Burial followed at Union Grove Baptist Church.
Robert Ryland Vaughan Sr.
Robert Ryland Vaughan Sr., 74, of Pfafftown died January 31. He was born December 19, 1932, in Ashland, Va., to the Rev. Edwin M. and Elizabeth Vaughan. He retired from AT&T in 1987 after more than 36 years of service. He was an active member of Beck’s Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and member of Baptist Men’s disaster-relief efforts. He lived a life in service to his Savior since his profession of faith at the age of 12.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Jane Fulk Vaughan of the home; his daughter, Jan Smith and husband Harold; his son, Bobby Vaughan and wife Dawn; five granddaughters, Laura Edwards and husband Todd, Katie Pearce and husband Drew, Christen, Leah and Anna Vaughan; two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Rachael Edwards; a sister, Margaret Myers and husband Bruce and their children, Sandra, Susan, and Bill.
A private graveside service was held at Beck’s Baptist Church Cemetery. A celebration of life service was held in the church sanctuary with Dr. Karl Minor, Dr. Ray Hamilton and Robert Ryland Vaughan Jr. officiating.
Martha Elizabeth Crater Anderson
Martha Elizabeth Crater Anderson, 90, of Winston-Salem died January 30 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born May 11, 1916 in Yadkin County to the late Jacob Lee and Harriet Holton Crater. She was a member of Ardmore United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stiles Anderson; a son, Robert Anderson; a daughter, Mary Kline; five brothers; and three sisters.
Surviving are a granddaughter, Ashlyn Anderson of Knoxville, Tenn.; two grandsons, Jason Kline and Patrick Kline, both of Clemmons; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. John Franklin Howard officiating. A private burial was held in Harmony Grove Quaker Church Cemetery.
Agnes Grubbs Fishel
Agnes Grubbs Fishel, 88, of Winston-Salem died February 1 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born December 29, 1918, in Winston-Salem to Cromer and Emma White Grubbs. She was a member of Linville Forest Church of Christ, where she was active with the Senior Citizens. She worked for R.J. Reynolds for 40 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton S. Fishel; a daughter, Marie Malcom; a brother, Odis Grubbs and a great-grandchild, Cheyenne Collins.
Surviving are two daughters, Edith Fishel Collins of Clemmons and Carolyn Fishel Bodford of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Hazel Fishel of Winston-Salem, Betty Percival and husband James of Winston-Salem and Ruby Vanhoy and husband Vance of Kernersville; a brother, C.L. Grubbs and wife Callie of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Anita Grubbs of Stony Point; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Elder Jim Taylor officiating. Burial followed in Parklawn Memorial Park.
Judith Ann Higgins Hendrix
Judith Ann Higgins Hendrix, 66, of Bermuda Run died February 1. She was born October 15, 1940, in Grayson County, Va., to Heath and Alma Higgins. She was employed by Salem Creek. She was an active member of Clemmons Moravian Church, Women’s Circle 4, a judge of elections of the Hillsdale precinct in Davie County, a member of a stitch group and had many years of previous involvement in the furniture market. She enjoyed reading, collecting china, puzzles, flower gardening, working, outings with her grandchildren, being with her stitch friends and especially holidays. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Surviving her are a daughter, Kim Hendrix Kakouras of Advance; a son, Craig Dalton Hendrix and wife Anita of Mocksville; two brothers, James Higgins and wife Joan and David Higgins and wife Phyllis; a favorite uncle, Jack Higgins, and Aunt Betty Higgins of Clemmons, and former husband Gordon Hendrix, also of Clemmons; and three grandchildren, Drew Kakouras and Allie and Hunter Hendrix.
Funeral services were held at Clemmons Moravian Church with Rev. Ray Burke officiating. Burial followed in God’s Acre behind the church.
Sarah Lou Jennings Huie
Sarah Lou Jennings Huie, 72, of Winston-Salem died February 2 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born April 16, 1934, in Ferndale, Fla., to the late Rev. Vernon Jennings and the late Rev. Eula Walker Jennings. She was a member of First Assembly of God. She loved being with her family. She enjoyed attending church, music, walking, reading, fall leaves, and traveling. She was preceded in death by a brother, Duane, and a sister, Bonnie.
Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Fred M. Huie of the home; a daughter, Starla Huie of Winston-Salem; five sons, Rev. Dr. Duane Huie and wife Joan of Livingston, Mont., Jerry Huie and wife Nancy of Canton, Ga., Dennis Huie and wife Kathy of Winston-Salem, Rick Huie of Clemmons and Andre Huie and wife Donna of Clemmons; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters; and six brothers.
Funeral services were held at First Assembly of God with Rev. Dr. Duane Huie and Rev. Fred Jennings officiating. Burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
Howard Joseph Plouff II
Howard Joseph Plouff II, 41, of Lewisville died February 23 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born August 13, 1965, in New York to Howard Joseph Plouff and Marie D’Andrea. He was a police sergeant with the Winston-Salem Police Department for 17 1/2 years. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. He was a volunteer firefighter with Bohemia Fire Department in New York and was an assistant coach with Southwest Forsyth Little League.
Surviving are his wife, Joyce M. Plouff of the home; two daughters, Brandy and Holly Plouff; his father, Howard Joseph Plouff of Florida; his mother, Marie McGarrigle and husband Tom of Pfafftown; a brother, Paul Plouff of South Carolina; three sisters, Lizabeth Plouff, Christine Meehan and Jackie Kunzer, all of New York; his mother in law, Eileen Miller; four sisters-in-law, Karen Henry, Kate Turecek, Eileen Biancone and Bethanne Salamone; two brothers-in-law, Jimmy Miller and Brian Miller; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A Service of the Resurrection was held at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Father Michael Buttner and Rev. Father Brian Cook officiating. Memorials may be made to the Police Benevolence Association, Plouff Fund, 1900 Brannan Road, McDonough, GA 30253.
Nancy Lanier Hunter
Nancy Lanier Hunter, 76, of Clemmons died February 22 at Clemmons Village I. She was born November 21, 1930, in Norwood to John M. and Lucy Mae Lanier. She taught elementary school in Albemarle, Charlotte and Winston-Salem. She was an active member of Clemmons United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Julian and Walter Lanier.
Surviving are her husband, John R. Hunter of the home; a daughter, Sandra O’Brien and husband Tracy of Pfafftown; a son, Michael Hunter and wife Shelli of Winston-Salem; a brother, Bill Lanier and wife Betsy of Peachland; five sisters-in-law, Mrs. Robert Dunnagan, Mrs. Dilworth Yokley and Miss Carol Hunter, all of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Julian Lanier of Norwood and Mrs. Walter Lanier of Albemarle; two grandchildren, Christina and Michelle O’Brien; and 10 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Clemmons United Methodist Church with Rev. Marcus Portis officiating. A private burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. Roger Wilson Ebert
Roger Wilson Ebert, 71, of Lewisville died February 22 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Forsyth County on July 26, 1935 to the late Theodore Elgin and Kate Harrison Ebert. He owned and operated Ebert Sign Company and had been in the sign business for more than 40 years. He was a lifelong member of Ardmore Moravian Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Williams; and three brothers, Stokes, Lawrence and Donald Ebert.
Surviving are his wife, Ann H. Ebert; two sons, Ric Ebert and wife Chris and Dean Evert and wife Cheryl; stepdaughters Karla Southern, Amanda Gray and Tammy Southern; grandsons Wilson, Martin and Harrison Ebert; granddaughters Suzahn Ebert and Mariah and Delainey Gray; a sister, Betty Warner; and brothers T.E. Ebert Jr., Henry Ebert and wife Kathryn and Thomas Ebert and wife Diane.

Johnna H. Eller
Johnna H. Eller, 47, of Clemmons died February 23 from injuries she received in an automobile accident. She was born April 20, 1959, in Forsyth County to John R. Hege and Frances D. Hege. She was co-owner of Hair Expressions Studio in Clemmons. She was a member of Good Hope United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her parents; her husband of 21 years, Kelly G. Eller of Rural Hall, from whom she was currently separated; a son, Dustan G. Eller of the home; brother Chris R. Hege of Clemmons; sister Beth Blackwell and husband Bobby of Clemmons; nephew Dylan Hege; nieces Sydney Hege and Lisa Hinshaw and husband Wes; and a great-niece, Nicole Hinshaw.

Lois Williams Herman
Lois Williams Herman, 75, of Clemmons died February 24 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born July 10, 1931, in Forsyth County to the late Fred and Dorothy DeHart Williams. She was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church where she taught preschool children in Sunday school and the nursery for many years. She was a member of King Chapter No. 328 - OES and was retired from Lyndhurst Gynecological Associates.
Surviving are her husband, Robert “Bob” Herman of the home; a daughter, Troyanne McMillan and husband Ed of Pfafftown; two grandchildren, Allison and Matt, also of Pfafftown; a brother, Ernest Williams of Advance; stepdaughter Kim Hill and husband Steve; a grandson, Tyler, of Raleigh; stepson Mark Herman and wife Judy; grandchildren Tommy, Andy and Katie; and a great-granddaughter, Molly, all of Clemmons; stepsister Ruby Carter; and stepbrothers Randy, John “Ike” and Jay Hayes.

Willard Aldean Matthews
Willard Aldean Matthews, 78, of Lewisville died February 21 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born April 1, 1928 in Stokes County, the son of Willie Lee Sr. and Mabel Fansler Matthews. He served in the Armed Services during the Korean conflict. He was the owner of Matthew Lineoleum, Tile & Carpet for 30 years. He was a member of Vienna Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia (Chester) Cook and Margaret (Buck) Joyce; and two brothers, James Aaron Matthews and Robert Daron Matthews.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Ann Hennings Matthews of the home; two sons, Michael Dean Matthews and Timothy Joel Matthews of Lewisville; a granddaughter, Amanda Ann Matthews of Texas; brothers Willie Matthews Jr. and wife Magdaline of Walnut Cove and Larry Matthews and wife Gail of Pine Hall; sisters Annie Ruth Greene of Walnut Cove, Doris Mabe and husband Gilmer of Lawsonville, Ruby Crews of Walnut Cove, Shelby Fagg and husband Louis of Winston-Salem and Sarah Alley and husband Willliam of Walnut Cove.

Roland H. Kaufman
Roland H. Kaufman, 84, of Pfafftown died February 18 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Baltimore, Md., and had lived in Winston-Salem since 1970. He retired from Westinghouse Corp. in 1985.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Kaufman of the home; daughters, Joyce C. Long and husband Davis of Pfafftown and J. Lynne Fontana of Winston-Salem; granddaughter, Carol L. Sprinkle and husband Tommy of Winston-Salem; and great-granddaughter, Heather L. Harper of Winston-Salem.

Elizabeth M. Busa
Elizabeth M. Busa, 82, of Two Harbors, Minn. died February 19 at Lake View Memorial Hospital. She was born April 25, 1924, to John and Alice (Faquarson) Bonner in Boston, Mass. She grew up in Boston, married Charles F. Busa in 1941 and worked for the U.S. Selective Service and the U.S. Postal Service. After retiring, she and Charlie lived in Lewisville for 20 years. In May of 2005, she moved to Two Harbors and in a brief time made many wonderful friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Charles F. Busa; and her sister, Barbara Bonner.
Surviving are her sons, Joseph J. Busa of Hopedale, Mass. and Charles F. Busa Jr. of Lewisville; her daughter, Elizabeth M. Busa of Two Harbors; grandchildren, Cinthia Elkins and husband Matthew, Charles Deye and wife Angela and Jennifer Freking and husband Blake; great-grandchildren, Cuinn and Anna Deye; sisters MaryElliott and husband Bob of Florida and Bernadette Elliott of Massachusetts; brothers James Bonner and wife Lorraine and John Bonner and wife Mildred, both of Massachusetts; and many nieces and nephews.
Burial was held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
Sarah Frances Hunter
Sarah Frances Hunter, died February 19 at The Oaks at Forsyth. She was born to the late Edgar Hank and Dora Scott Hunter. She was a math teacher for 37 years, four years in Davidson County and the remainder at Griffith High School in Forsyth County. For many of those years, she was the girls’ basketball coach. As an active member of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, she taught Sunday school for more than 40 years. She also served many years on the administrative board and in other positions. She was an active, dedicated member of Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Sorority for Women Educators. She served in many leadership positions, including three terms as president of her local chapter, Beta. She was preceded in death by six brothers, Edgar L., A. Frank, William C., George, Homer and Jack; and two sisters, Helen Tilton and Lucille Williams.
Surviving are a brother, Joe Hunter and wife Becky of Midway; a sister, Betty Buckingham and husband Harry of Lewisville; a sister-in-law, Mary Lillian Hunter; many special nieces and nephews; and many friends and former students.
Funeral services were held at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church with Rev. Joe Collins and Rev. James Allred officiating. A private entombment followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons.
Alton Gamble
Alton Gamble, 43, of Pfafftown died unexpectedly on February 14 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born February 2, 1964, in Lake City, S.C. He attended East Forsyth High School until 1982. He began driving trucks at a young age, which led him to his professional career as a truck driver. He was employed by Henderson Brothers Trucking, Inc. He was a member of First Assembly Church of God. His favorite sport was football and he also loved weight-lifting, boxing and coaching. He was preceded in death by Gloria Jean Roberts and Darlene Gamble.
Surviving are his wife, Alicia Roberts Gamble; his mother, Thelma Grant; sons DeQuan Roberts, Nathan Gamble, Cristien Farrior and Gerard Kirkland; daughters Tia Gamble, Alicia Gamble and LaTonya Kirkland; grandchildren Antoine Washington Jr., Semqj Transou, Arieonna Roberts Trenton Transou, Shyhiem Washington, Ahmia Scott, Iyuana Farrior, Shanya Gamble; brothers Alford Grant, Anthony Grant, Ronald Lee Grant and Edward Gamble; sisters Lula Gamble and Luzette Grant; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Funeral services were held at First Assembly Church of God. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery.
James Richard Crysel
James Richard Crysel, 76, of Wilkesboro died February 18 at his home. He was born October 31, 1930, in Hamilton, Ohio, to Jerry and Anna Mae Robinson Crysel. Before retiring, he was a truck driver for Chatham Manufacturing. He was a lifetime member of Union United Methodist Church, where he served on the finance committee, board of trustees, nominating committee and chaired the cemetery committee. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and 50 years as a Master Mason at Liberty Lodge No. 45. He was preceded in death by a brother, John Walter Crysel.
Surviving are his wife, Wannie Smith Crysel of the home; two sons, Gary Anthony Crysel and wife Terry of Trinity and John Richard Crysel and wife Kathy of Lewisville; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Union United Methodist Church with Rev. Ed McKinney and A.G Church officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Emily Hamilton Wein
Emily Hamilton Wein, 82, of Pfafftown died February 22 at Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. She was born March 2, 1924, in Forsyth County to William R. and Ella Transou Hamilton.
Surviving are her husband, Theodore W. Wein of the home; a daughter, Deborah Wein Smith and husband Donald of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a son, John Mark Wein of Winston-Salem; a daughter-in-law, Karen Wein-Gordon of Westfield; two granddaughters, Bethany Flemings and husband Phil of Orlando, Fla. and Alissa Joslin and husband Stan of Cheyenne, Wyo.; two grandsons, John Andrew Wein of UNC-Chapel Hill and Mark H. Smith of Murfreesboro; a great-granddaughter, Isabella Joslin of Cheyenne.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park with Rev. Doug Rights officiating.
