Lillian Mock Beroth
Lillian Mock Beroth, 90, of Pfafftown died December 24 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born June 1, 1914, in Lewisville to the late Jasper and Anna Harper Mock. She was a member of Brookstown United Methodist Church. Her husband of 66 years, Gaither E. Beroth; a sister, Katie Mock Graves; two brothers, Odell and Philip Mock; and a daughter-in-law, Ellen Palmer Beroth, preceded her in death.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Jane Griffith and husband Ralph of Pilot Mountain and Anna Doub of Yadkinville; a son, Thomas J. Beroth Sr. and wife Patsy of Pilot Mountain; five grandchildren, Caroline G. Simpson and husband Shaun, Peggy D. Royall and husband Quincy, Tammy B. Gilley and husband Earl, Ralph R. Griffith Jr. and wife Ollise, and Thomas J. Beroth Jr. and wife Linda; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marianna McKinney of Jacksonville, FL, and Blake Shouse of Winston-Salem; and three brothers, Allen Mock of Lewisville, J.W. Mock Jr. of Jacksonville, FL, and Fred Mock of East Bend.
Funeral services were held at Brookstown United Methodist Church with Rev. Roland Barnhardt officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Robert Tise Whitney
Robert Tise Whitney, 75, of Clemmons died December 27. He was born October 12, 1929, in Forsyth County to Merle C. Whitney Sr. and Mallie Mozelle Snyder Whitney. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Air Force. He was retired from Whitney Furniture and Carpets and worked as a financial-aid officer in the Whitney family business, the Winston-Salem Barber School, until recently. He enjoyed golf and was an avid sports enthusiast and lifelong UNC Tar Heel fan. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Hoyt Whitney.
Surviving are his wife, JoAnne Cooke Whitney of the home; a son, Jeffrey Alan Whitney and wife Twila of Clemmons; a daughter, Martha Whitney Parent and husband Bob of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Austin and Haley Parent; a brother, Merle C. Whitney Jr. of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Norma Whitney McNeill of Winston-Salem and Jan Whitney Dooley of Hayes; and a number of nieces, nephews and friends.
A graveside service was held at Mount Gur Cemetery in Kernersville with Rev. David Marcus officiating.
Pamela Rene Winkler Ruppert
Pamela Rene Winkler Ruppert, 40, of Clemmons died December 25 at Forsyth Medical Center. Born on May 18, 1964, in Watauga County, she was the daughter of Roy Richard and Burlee Church Winkler. She was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are a daughter, Brittnei Ruppert of the home; a son, Justin Brooks Ruppert of Clemmons; her mother, Burlee Church Jones and husband Paul of Winston-Salem; her father, Roy Richard Winkler of Boone; a sister, Mariette Winkler Lisk and husband Kenneth of Boone; and four stepbrothers, Craig and Brian Moretz of Winston-Salem, Greg Jones of Mojave, CA, and Christopher Jones of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Michael Barfoot and Rev. Sylvia Wilhelm officiating. Burial followed at Pine Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Dulce Maria Gonzales del Pozo de del Valle
Dulce Maria Gonzalez del Pozo de del Valle, 94, of Winston-Salem died December 20. She was born in 1910 in Havana, Cuba, to Col. Bernardo Gonzalez Justiz and Esther del Pozo Alvarez. She was preceded in death by her husband, Miguel G. del Valle Mata.
Surviving are her daughter, Esther S. Dambakakis of Lewisville, the mother of Miguel, deceased, and Andreas; and her two sons, Miguel G. del Valle of Miami, the father of Zuly, Miguel Angel and Leonardo, and Francisco P. del Valle of Winston-Salem, the father of Francisco, Pablo, Alexis and Tamar.
A funeral Mass was held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons, and burial followed in Parklawn Memorial Park.
Harry Broughton Mazyck
Harry Broughton Mazyck, 96, died December 26at the Brookridge Retirement Community. He was born in Rowesville, SC, a son of the late Harry B. Mazyck Sr. and Hurteline Robinson Mazyck. He moved to Timmonsville, SC, with his parents at an early age and was a member of Timmonsville Presbyterian Church. He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II. He was a retired employee of Consolidated-Edison in New York City. He was a member of Clemson IPTAY and a supporter of the Clemson football team. He was predeceased by a brother, Edward H. Mazyck Sr.
Surviving are his sister-in-law, June C. Mazyck of Winston-Salem; a nephew, Ted Mazyck and wife Diane of Clemmons; two nieces, Ann Dillon and husband Charles of Atlanta, GA, and Jayne B. Mazyck of Reidsville; a great-nephew, Edward H. Mazyck III; two great-nieces, Catherine Dillon and Caroline Mazyck; and a special friend, Sarah S. Layton of Timmonsville.
Funeral services were held in the chapel of Layton-Anderson Funeral Home in Florence, SC. Burial followed at Byrd Cemetery in Timmonsville.
Vetra Blackburn Watson
Vetra Blackburn Watson, 89, of Winston-Salem died December 25 after a lengthy illness. She was born July 29, 1915, in Ashe County to Levi Finley and Celia Holman Blackburn. She was a member at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Watson Sr.; a son, Bennis W. Watson; and a daughter, Geraldine Watson Owens.
Surviving are a daughter, Melba Owens and husband Larry Don of Advance; three sons, Kenneth Watson and wife Ruby J. of Clemmons, Grady Watson Jr. and wife Mabel of Advance and Donald Watson; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Arlee Dyer of Purlear; and three brothers, Bruce Blackburn of Purlear, L.G. Blackburn of California and Ray Blackburn of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Joe Collins and Rev. Ken Eller officiating. Burial followed at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church.
Martha Gillum Burr
Martha Gillum Burr, 77, died December 27 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Charlottesville, VA, on April 28, 1927, to Roy Temple and Margaret Mauze Gillum. She taught in the Charlottesville public schools in elementary education. She was married to Rev. Dr. David Burr in 1952. An active sportswoman, she was a member of the Winston-Salem Shark Club and the YMCA, a golfer at Forsyth Country Club and was active in recreational activities for Senior Services. She was a longtime member of the Breathing Plus Fellowship.
Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Deborah May and husband Bob; a son, Richard Burr and wife Brooke; two granddaughters, Jeanette May Ferguson and Christina May; two grandsons, David Tyler Burr and William F. Burr; and a sister, Margaret G. McGowen of Centreville, VA.
A celebration of life was held at First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem with Dr. Jeff White, Dr. J. Layton Mauze and Dr. Hank Keating officiating.
Richard Douglas Kinzer
Richard Douglas Kinzer, 57, of Clemmons died October 2 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born August 11, 1948, and was employed at Motorsport Connections.
Surviving is a son, Michael Douglas Kinzer.
A graveside service was held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
Brian James Hubbard
Brian James Hubbard, infant son of Steven and Angela Martz Hubbard, died October 4 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Tracey Martz.
Surviving are his parents of Clemmons; a brother, Zachary; his grandparents, Harold and Boneta Hubbard, and Sandra Martz; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Eric Davis officiating. A committal service was held at Parklawn Memorial Park.
Mary Ellen Penn
Mary Ellen Penn, 54, of Winston-Salem, formerly of Boone, died October 2 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born in Forsyth County to William Shelton Penn Jr. and Ellen Martin Gent. She was past president and life member of the Blue Ridge Garden Club, past president of the Boone Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and portrait artist member of Art Mix.
Surviving are her daughter, Mary Ellen “Elle” Jackson of the home; her mother, Ellen Martin Gent of East Bend; and a brother, Ed Schreiber of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held at East Bend United Methodist Church with Rev. Janet Anderson, Paul Chappell, Dr. C.M. Worthy and Janice Williams officiating. Burial followed in East Bend Baptist Church Cemetery.
Iona Winters Gilley Disher
Iona Winters Gilley Disher, 85, a resident of Springwood Care Center, died October 3 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. The oldest of eight children, she was born in Forsyth County on May 8, 1920, to Nearse K. and Nora Holloway Winters. She retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 30 years of service and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Elcye Gilley; and two sons, Robert and Richard Gilley.
Surviving are a daughter, Betty Sluder of Winston-Salem; a son, Donald Gilley of Clemmons; six grandchildren, including a special granddaughter, JoAnna Gilley; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, JoAnn Joyce of Stanleyville and Betty Stente of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Bobby Winters of Advance.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel with Rev. Stephen Tilley officiating. Burial followed at Crestview Memorial Park.
William Basil Edwards
William Basil Edwards, 88, of Roaring River died October 4 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. He was born in Wilkes County on April 14, 1917, to John B. and Bessie DeBorde Edwards. He was a member and a deacon at Pleasant Home Baptist Church since 1944. He was preceded in death by two sons, Brent Edwards and Johnnie Edwards; and four brothers, Rudolph Edwards, Claude Edwards, Ronald Edwards and Robert “Bob” Edwards.
Surviving are his wife, Ennice Madge Alexander Edwards of the home; three daughters, Carol Byrd and husband James of Elkin, Brenda Sebastian and husband Jim of Roaring River and Linda Holcomb and husband Dean of Clemmons; two sisters, Mildred Anthony of Elkin and Wilma Gustafson of Roaring River; two brothers, Russell Edwards of Winston-Salem and Roger Edwards of Roaring River; two daughters-in-law, Janet Walker Edwards of Lewisville and Ann Hoots Edwards Bumgarner of Roaring River; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Pleasant Home Baptist Church with Rev. Kenneth Jordan, Rev. Hugh Hayes and Rev. Todd Byrd officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
James Herman Franklin
James Herman Franklin, 84, of Pfafftown died October 4 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born June 2, 1921, in Forsyth County, a son of the late John Franklin Sr. and the late Geneva Fultz Franklin Powell. He was employed with Hennis Freight for many years as a control clerk, but retired from Fortis Homes in 1986 as a finish carpenter. He was a good carpenter who loved to work with wood and also on his shrubbery farm. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Franklin, in 1990; and by a sister, Dolly Cohn.
Surviving are his son, Colin Franklin of Pfafftown; a daughter, Deborah Franklin of Lewisville; brothers, John Franklin Jr. and wife Evelyn, and Walter R. Franklin and wife Ellen; and sister, Cathy Harrison, all of Pfafftown.
Funeral services were held at Vogler Reynolda Road Chapel with Rev. Steve Monroe and Rev. Ron Cohn officiating. Burial followed in Pfafftown Cemetery.
Thomas Morgan Hill
Thomas Morgan Hill, 67, of Winston-Salem died October 3 at his home. He was born April 26, 1938, in Chambers County, Ala., to Thomas Joseph and Martha Ucal Earnest Hill. He was born in Alabama but grew up in Portsmouth, Va. He was a retired minister of the Disciples of Christ, serving Black Mountain Christian Church in Black Mountain, Eastway Christian Church in Charlotte and Hurst Christian Church in Hurst, Texas. He was a member of First Christian Church of Winston-Salem, where he was a former Sunday school teacher. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Reba Dwayne Hill Perry.
Surviving are his wife, Claudette S. Hill; two daughters, Dianne Y. Johnson and husband Tim of Clemmons and Dawn E. Hill of Palm Springs, Calif.; a grandson, Evan A. Johnson; and two nephews, Gerald Perry of Thomasville and Thomas Perry of Portsmouth, Va.
A memorial service was held at First Christian Church in Winston-Salem with Dr. Mike Simpson officiating.
Margaret Gertrude Siewers Turner
Margaret Gertrude Siewers Turner, 95, died October 5 at Salemtowne. She was born in Salem on July 20, 1910, to Clara Vance Siewers and Charles Schober Siewers. In 1936, she married Alan Turner and moved to Greensboro, where she lived until 1988. During those years, she taught music and served as an organist at First Moravian Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Jean Blackwood and husband Art of Lewisville; two sons, Alan Turner and wife Nancy of Charlotte and Charles Turner and wife Laura of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Art Blackwood III, Jessica M. Blackwood, Catherine Turner Greene, Elizabeth Turner Merrick and Margaret Turner; and three great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Meghan Blackwood and Emelia Merrick.
Funeral services were held at Home Moravian Church. Burial followed in Salem Moravian Graveyard.
Lola Macemore McGrady
Lola Macemore McGrady, 96, of Springwood Care Center died October 5. She was born February 21, 1909, in Mooresville to Henderson and Lela Macemore. Mrs. She worked at Hanes Cotton Mill until she retired. She was a member of Hanes Baptist Church of Winston-Salem where she was a longtime Sunday school teacher. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Watson and Lendon Macemore; three sisters, Ruth, Elizabeth and Bertha Macemore; husbands Andy McGrady and Clarence O’Brien; and two daughters-in-law, Mildred (Mickey) McGrady and Mildred O’Brien.
Surviving are two sons, Kenneth McGrady and wife Gwen of Hickory and Phillip O’Brien of Winston-Salem; a stepdaughter, Sue Smith and husband Bill of Stanleyville; five grandchildren, Mike O’Brien of Clemmons, Vickie Brophy and husband Jim of Winston-Salem, Pat Hawkins of Waynesville, Nancy Knox and husband Steve of King and Kendal Morris and husband Dennis of Bethlehem; two stepgrandchildren, Ann Shore and husband Boyce of Tobaccoville and Beth Holcomb and husband Van of Sparta; nine great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Ron Groce and Rev. Roy Young officiating. Burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park.
Hazel Katherine Dority Weaver
Hazel Katherine Dority Weaver, 91, of Arbor Acres, Winston-Salem, died October 6. She was born March 6, 1914, to Clarence and Iona Norris Dority, the first child born in the old Mercy Hospital in Durham. In 1934, she married Charles Baker Weaver who preceded her in death in 1966. She was a faithful member of Ardmore United Methodist Church, where she taught the Alma Nunn Class as long as her health permitted. She was also active in the Wachovia Chapter of the Daughters of American Colonists, the Col. Joseph Winston Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the James B. Gordon Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Broadway Home Extension Club. She retired from Old Salem Inc. after more than 40 years of service.
Surviving are two sons and their families, Charles B. Weaver and wife Pat of Winston-Salem and William N. Weaver and wife Andree of Charlotte; five grandchildren, Kathy Otterbourg and husband Ken of Winston-Salem, Kelly Goley and husband Will of Charlotte, Mary Beth Evans and husband Michael of Lewisville, Stephanie Weaver of Charlottesville, Va., and J.C. Weaver of Charlotte; and five great-grandchildren, Norris Weaver Evans, Alexander Weaver Goley, Patrick McIver Goley, Samuel Weaver Otterbourg and Sierra Skye Weaver.
Funeral services were held at Ardmore United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Frank Grice and Rev. Donald Funderburk officiating.
Wilma Boles Moxley
Wilma Boles Moxley, 66, of Clemmons died October 5 at her residence. She was born January 15, 1939, in Stokes County to the late John H. Boles and Bertha Calhoun Boles. She was a nursing assistant for Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and a member of Victory Baptist Church, Clemmons. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Alma Jean Roberts; and two brothers, John Willie Boles and Richard Leonard Boles.
Surviving are a daughter, Susan Hundley of Yadkinville; a son, Carlton Jones and wife Kay of King; two sisters, Stacy Thomas of Clemmons, and Betty Shelton of King; a brother, Roscoe Boles and wife Minnie Frances; three grandchildren, Kimberly Martin and husband Dean, Laura Staley and husband Jay, and Louden Hundley; and three great-grandchildren, DJ Martin, Kayla Martin and Angelina Staley.
Funeral services were held at Old Orchard Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Vance Jones and Elder John Calhoun officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Barbara Ann Vernon Nance
Barbara Ann Vernon Nance, 72, of Clemmons died October 7 at Wake Forest Baptist University Medical Center. She was born February 21, 1933, in Forsyth County, a daughter of the late Reuben Z. Matthews and Mildred Stancill Matthews. She worked in physical therapy with 25 years of service at Forsyth Medical Center.
Surviving are her children, Lisa Styles and husband Robert of Advance, Tad Nance and wife Melinda of Clemmons and Michael Earl Nance and wife Vickie of Clemmons; sister Susan Hanks of Westfield; brother Reuben Matthews of Fayetteville; grandchildren Max Pardon and wife Courtney, Stephanie Styles, Tevis Nance and Gage Webb; a great-grandchild, Avery Pardon; and nieces and nephews Monica, Chloe, Kathy, Jimmy and Ryan.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Alva O. Cardwell
Alva O. Cardwell, 78, of Clemmons died July 20 at the VA Hospital in Salisbury. He was born November 29, 1926, in McComb, W.Va., to Joseph and Nellie Mae Cardwell and spent his early life in the Mount Pleasant community. He was a World War II veteran and spent most of his life in the meat business in the Winston-Salem area.
He had five sons, Dieter Cardwell and wife Adair of Clemmons, Roger Cardwell and wife Cheryl of Yadkinville, Ralph Cardwell and wife Neva of Boiling Springs, Ronald Cardwell (now deceased) and Mark Cardwell of Winston-Salem.
Graveside services were held at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro.
