SURBER
KERNERSVILLE - Mr. William Edwin "Bill" Surber, 73, of 519 Michael St., Lot 9, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at his home. He was born June 3, 1928, in McDowell County, W.Va., a son of the late Martin and Martha Sprigs Surber. He retired from Roadway Express and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of VFW Post 5352, the Kernersville Moose Lodge, and attended Welcome Door Baptist Church. Mr. Surber was preceded in death by two sons, Randy Darrell Surber and Jarrod Heath Surber. Surviving are two daughters, Teressa Lynn Surber and Jacqueline Marie Surber of Winston-Salem; two sons, William Michael Surber of Belews Creek and Charles Edward Surber and his wife Dawn of Kernersville; a sister, Effie Lee Wyse and her husband Herdon of Kernersville; grandchildren Michael O'Brian, C.J. Surber, Michael Edwin Surber, Justin Ray Surber, Jillian Leigh Surber, Brandie Nichole Surber, Jenna Dara Surber, Matthew Landon Surber, Kayla Kimel, Kelsey Kimel and Zachary Marshall Lynn; and a great-grandson, Shane. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel, Kernersville. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory, Walkertown, The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
ALLEN
ELKIN - Mr. Robert Allen, 76, of 119 Salmon St. passed away Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at his residence. Mr. Allen was born May 22, 1925, in Surry County to Raymond Worth Allen and Claudia Dobbs Allen. Mr. Allen was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, and served as a trustee and member of the Methodist Men. He also was in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Jimmy Lee Allen, George Allen, Sam Allen, Noah Ford Allen, Floyd Allen, and Raymond Allen Jr.; and a sister, Nannie Randleman. He is survived by his wife, Mallie Robinson Allen of the home; three sisters, Susie Jones and Alice Allen, both of Elkin, and Claudia Garner of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; and a brother, Alex Allen of New York. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, at Wesley United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Crestwood Memorial Gardens in State Road. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Johnson Funeral Home in Elkin.
BLOUNT
Dr. Willie Archie Blount, 83, of 608 Terrace Ave. NE passed away Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center following a period of illness. He was a native of Washington, N.C., born Jan. 31, 1918, to the late Archie and Sarah Carter Blount. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from N.C. A&T State University, and his Master of Science and Doctorate degrees from Pennsylvania State University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired with the rank of captain. He was emeritus director of Institutional Research and Development at N.C. A&T State University, from which he retired. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he was former chairman of the Deacon Board. Dr. Blount is survived by his devoted wife, Dorothy Hayes Blount, and a loving son, Archie Hayes Blount, both of the home; several nieces, among them Dorothy Lee Jones of Greenville, Sarah Jones Burns of Newberg, N.Y., and Josephine LeBeau of Bronx, N.Y.; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Wendell A. Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. CRATER
Mr. William Franklin Crater, 80, of Winston-Salem, passed away Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Crater was born April 16, 1921, in Winston-Salem to Samuel Coston and Florence Crater Pope. He married Dorothy Sink in 1942. Mr. Crater retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. in 1987, serving at No. 12 Shipping Department as department supervisor, after 40 years of service. He was a member of Ardmore Moravian Church, serving on the Board of Elders, and as Sunday School teacher, usher, youth fellowship leader, scoutmaster and committee member. He received the Scouter's Award and was inducted in the Order of the Arrow. He also was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, No. 466. Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Houston and Samuel Crater; and a sister, Betty Pope Myers, all of Winston-Salem. Surviving are his wife Dorothy Sink Crater of Winston-Salem; two sons, William Franklin Crater Jr. and wife Rosie of Charlotte, and Steve Crater and his wife Phyllis of Bermuda Run; daughter, Cyndi Petree and her husband Robert of Lexington; seven grandchildren, Kathy, Kelly and Stephen Crater, Tiffany Crater Blase, Dana Crater Hudgins, and Rene and Joey Petree; two great-grandchildren, Christian William and Jackson Lawrence Blase; three sisters, Dorothea Nell Crater Leach, Peggy Pope Wooten, and Carolyn Pope Canter; two special nieces, Roberta Fitzgerald, and Gail Culler and her husband Roger, and son, William; and beloved dog, Ginger. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27 at Parklawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Kevin Frack officiating. DANIELS
STATESVILLE - Mr. John Curtis "Jimmy" Daniels, 60, of 512 Brevard Street, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at Iredell Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. He was born in Iredell County Oct. 9, 1940, to the late Joe Roy and Eula Mae Hickman Daniels. He was preceded in death by seven siblings, Louise Daniels, a set of twin sisters, John D. Daniels and James E. Daniels, Thomas L. Daniels, and Lelia Daniels Woods. He attended the Iredell County Schools and was medically retired from J.C. Penney Distribution Center after over 25 years of service. He was a carpenter and painter and enjoyed his work for many years. He worked for Gaither Building Co. He was a member of St. Joseph Baptist Church and a former member of the Star Light Gospel Singers. Survivors include five brothers, Joseph (Jackie) Daniels, Clarence (Betty) Daniels, and Bobby Daniels, all of Statesville, Melvin (Belinda) Daniels, and Larry (Constance) Daniels, both of Winston-Salem; five sisters, Mrs. Ruth D. Lackey of Hiddenite, and Miss Dolleither Daniels and Miss Eloise Daniels, both of Statesville; Mrs. Mary Jean (Lonnie) Gray of Charlotte, and Miss Louise Daniels of Long Branch, N.J.; an aunt, Mrs. Mary Edmond of Buffalo, N.Y.; a special nephew, Donald D. Woods of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a host of nieces and nephews, including Bonita Napper of Winston-Salem, and Rochelle, Dedra and Tiffany Gray, all of Charlotte; and two devoted special friends, Mr. Emmanuel (Dag) Tuck of Statesville, and Mr. Raymond Gray of Woodleaf. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29 at the Mary B. Bigham Memorial Chapel of Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home. Elder Lonnie Gray will officiate and Elder H.J. Daniels will eulogize. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Baptist Church cemetery. The body will remain at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home where members of the family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in an informal setting. EDWARDS
SPENCER, Va. - Mrs. Vera Hodges Edwards, 85, of George Taylor Road, died Saturday evening at Blue Ridge Rehab in Martinsville. Mrs. Edwards was born. Nov. 26, 1915, in Patrick County, Va., to the late Bob Reid Hodges and the late Millie Newman Hodges. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Alfred Leslie Edwards; a daughter, Debra Jackson; a sister, Colleen Bullins; and three brothers, Russell, Alvis, and Raymond "Doc" Hodges. Mrs. Edwards was a longtime member of Mayo Christian Church. Surviving are two daughters, Betty Hylton of Martinsville, Va., and Mrs. Boyd (Barbara) Oakley of Walkertown; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Eva Joyce of Ridgeway, Va., Irene Nance of Spencer, Va., Virgie Martin of Madison, and Avagene Vernon of Madison; and a brother, Calvin Hodges of Spencer, Va. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28 at Mayo Christian Church with ministers James Jordan, Milford Hudson and Kenneth McFarling officiating. FARMER
YANCEYVILLE - Sarah Dameron Farmer, 80, of 1433 Foster Road, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at Genesis Nursing Center of Salisbury after an extended illness. Mrs. Farmer, a native of Caswell County, was born June 23, 1921, to the late Currie L. Dameron and Loucille H. Dameron. She was preceded in death by her husband S. Ryland Farmer, and a grandson, Samuel M. Farmer. Mrs. Farmer received her early education in the Caswell County Public Schools, and was a graduate of Greensboro College. She belonged to Prospect United Methodist Church, the Emerson Society, the North Carolina Education Association, the Caswell County Farm Bureau, and the Greensboro College Alumni Association. In 1992, she retired from a career teaching with Washington County, Md.; Reidsville City, and Caswell County Public Schools. She is survived by her son, R. Lee Farmer and wife Elizabeth M. Farmer of Yanceyville; daughter, Sarah F. Hensley and husband Michael Hensley of Salisbury; grand-children, Joshua Farmer of Cary, Cameron Farmer of Richmond, Va., and Samantha Hensley of Salisbury; sisters, Margaret D. Hatchett and husband W.H. Hatchett of Pelham, and Nettie D. Blackwell and husband James Y. Blackwell of Yanceyville; and nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27 at Prospect United Methodist Church with Pastors Joseph Lister, Brian Faggart, and Cindy Lister presiding. Mrs. Opal C. Branscomb Hall, 81, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, August 24, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born June 10, 1920, in Carroll County, Va., to Sandy and Martha McCraw Combs. Mrs. Hall was employed with L. Roberts, Robbins, and was a member of Oak Summit United Methodist Church. She was a wonderful cook, and enjoyed life and serving other people. She was preceded in death by her husband William Albert Hall, and her parents. Surviving are a son, Lionel Branscomb and wife Ramona of Winston-Salem; a sister, Arlene Lowe of Hillsville, Va.; three grandchildren, Patience Hering and husband John of Dallas, Texas, Laura Cody and husband Matthew of Winston-Salem, and Lionel "Lee" Branscomb and wife Angela of Seattle, Wash.; seven great-grandchildren, Priscilla Barnes, Jacob Hering of Dallas, Texas, Andrew, Caroline, Emily, and Natalie Cody of Winston-Salem, and Hannah Branscomb of Seattle, Wash.; and a very special niece, Vicki Richardson of Winston-Salem. Mrs. Muriel F. Harris, formerly of Winston-Salem, died Aug. 25, 2001, at the home of her daughter in Statesville following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Harris had resided in Winston-Salem for several years until her retirement from Western Electric in 1965. Survivors include her daughter, Edith H. Bell, of Statesville; and a son, W.E. Harris, of Clemmons. Funeral services will be held Aug. 29 in Statesville.
HILLIARD
GREENSBORO - Mr. Burnis Hilliard, 77, of 4702 Rehobeth Church Road, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, after a brief stay at Carolina Commons Healthcare. The funeral for Mr. Hilliard will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rocky Knoll Baptist Church with the Rev. Rodney Mitchell and Dr. Darryl Bodie officiating. Interment will follow in Grays Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery in Franklinville. Mr. Hilliard was born Sept. 23, 1923, in Chatham County and was a longtime resident of Greensboro. He retired from Carolina Steel after 34 years of service and was a faithful member of Rocky Knoll Baptist church. He enjoyed bowling, gardening and horseback riding. Survivors include his wife Elma Lee Hilliard of the home; two daughters, Cynthia Bodie and husband Darryl of Pleasant Garden, and Renee Foust and husband Kenneth of Clemmons; a brother, Thomas Lewis Hilliard of Greensboro; a daughter-in-law, Jo Lynn Hilliard of Climax; and seven grandchildren, Michelle Hilliard, Amanda Hilliard, Tonya Bodie, Marc Bodie, Brittany Bodie, Clint Foust and Byron Foust. His son, Roger Hilliard, preceded him in death. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Forbis and Dick Funeral Home North Elm Street Chapel.

NORTH WILKESBORO - Mr. Steve Myers, 43, of Sparta Road in North Wilkesboro died Sunday, Aug. 26, at his home. Mr. Myers was born April 18, 1958, in Wilkes County to Fred and Gertrude Taylor Myers. He was a member of Baptist Home Baptist Church, and was the owner and an avid rider of walking horses. Mr. Myers has been a certified paramedic with the Wilkes County Emergency Medical Services for 20 years. Surviving are his wife, Tammy Grimes Myers of the home; a son, Bradley Stephen Myers of Valdese; two daughters, Tesha Roten of North Wilkesboro, and Tamara Faw of the home; and a grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, at Miller Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Howard Laney and the Rev. Jimmy McGlamery officiating. Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park. YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Gladys Phillips Bruce North, 88, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. North was born Feb. 13, 1913, in Yadkin County to Samuel and Betty Hutchens Phillips. She retired from Western Electric in 1973, and was a charter member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where she actively served as a Sunday School teacher and in various positions as long as her health permitted. Mrs. North was preceded in death by her first husband, John Greek Bruce, and her second husband, Frank North; three brothers, Grady Phillips, Venus Phillips and Escar Phillips; and three sisters, Creola "Sister" Phillips, Ena Tilly and Delia Carter Greer. Surviving are her son, Buford A. Bruce, and wife Evelyn B. of Yadkinville; five grandchildren, David D. Bruce and wife, Debra, Toni B. Ladd and husband, Wayne, Barbara B. Comer and husband, Jerry, Teresa B. Choplin and husband, Charles, and Robin B. Riddle and husband, Bobby; seven great-grandchildren, Jason and Jamie Ladd, Kristen Bruce, Jonathan and Amber Comer, Brooke Choplin, and Samuel Biddle; and a brother, Benbow Phillips. RONDA - Mr. Robert Mitchell Smith, 65, of Mathis Mill Road, passed away Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Mr. Smith was born Aug. 3, 1936, in Wilkes County to Robert Samuel and Mammie Brooks Smith. Mr. Smith was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a son, Michael Dale Smith. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Kent and Lisa Smith of Ronda, and Bryan and Misty Smith of Cape Carteret; a daughter and son-in-law, Cammy and Alex Orozco of Hamptonville; and two granddaughters, Samantha Smith and Haley Orozco. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Dennis Murphy. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Wayne Stevenson "Steve" Teague died Aug. 24, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Teague was born Oct. 10, 1941. He leaves behind a loving mother, Elizabeth Teague, of 5935 Beckner St. in Winston-Salem; a devoted sister and brother-in-law, Johnny Sue and Edward Gregory; two very special aunts, Mary Waller of Yadkinville, and Estelle Smith of Mocksville; and a special niece, Angie Hines, and her children, Jessie and Dylan Hines. WEBSTER
Mr. Archie Gray Webster, 85, of 794 Polo Road, died Saturday at his home. Mr. Webster was born Nov. 6, 1919, in Winston-Salem to Arlis Arthur and Lula Wilson Webster. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel followed by a private entombment at Forsyth Memorial Park. Mr. Webster lived all of his life in Winston-Salem. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of the Winston-Salem Golf Association. Survivors include a brother, William "Bill" W. Webster, of Winston-Salem, and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
ARRINGTON
Ann Gourley Arrington, 85, of McGee Road died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at Village Care of King. She was born Nov. 24, 1915, in Forsyth County to Thomas Ruffin and Sally Lancaster Gourley. She was retired from Hanes Knitwear, was employed by City nursing from 1975 to 1991 and was a member of Loves United Methodist Church. Ann was preceded in death by her husband, E. Moyer Arrington; a grandson, Danny Lamarr Grubbs; and a daughter, Sally Ann Wrights. Surviving are a daughter, Martha Jones, of the residence; two granddaughters, Marcelle W. Prewitt and husband, Michael, of Winston-Salem and Carla W. Clyman and husband, Sandy, of New Jersey; two great-granddaughters, Ashley and Annie Prewitt; and a brother, Jack Gourley, of Winston-Salem also survives. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Mark Walters and the Rev. James T. Webb Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and will receive friends at other times at the home of a granddaughter, Marcelle Prewitt.

HIGH POINT - Mr. Roger Coram Cain, 72, of Ingram Road passed away Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at Hoots Memorial Hospital in Yadkinville. He was born Jan. 30, 1929, in Iredell County to the late Coram and Laura Lee Gough Cain. Mr. Cain was a retired supervisor with Harriss and Covington Hosiery and was a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Libby Cain Sizemore. Surviving are the mother of his children, Mary Elizabeth Cain of Yadkinville; his daughters, Martha Sue (Jeff) Stout and Sandra Leigh (Scott) Craver of Yadkinville; grandchildren Leah Sizemore Frye, Wendy Brown, David Brown, Daniel Bates and Dalton Craver; two great-grand-children, Tyler Brown, Laken Brown; a sister, Maxine (Dewitt) Bottomley of Yadkinville; and a brother, Jerry (Jackie) Cain of Yadkinville. His funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the Gentry Family Chapel by the Rev. Robin Dixon and the Rev. Don Cunningham. Burial will be in Yadkin Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville.
