RURAL HALL - Mrs. Elizabeth S. Smith, 87, died on Saturday morning, July 28, 2001, at Village Care of King following a period of declining health. A native of Stokes County, she born Aug. 26, 1913, to the late William Watson and Lottie Kellum Smith. Mrs. Smith was a charter member of Bethany Baptist Church in Winston-Salem and a member of the Ophelia Sunday School Class. She was retired from P.H. Hanes Knitting Co. with over 42 years of service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Lee Roy Smith in 1975; a son, Lee Roy Smith Jr. in 1998; a granddaughter, Dawn Wood in 1999; a sister, Lettie Flynt; and two brothers, Hardy Smith and Everett Smith. She is survived by two sons and daughters in-law, William D. Smith and wife Becky of Pfafftown, and Joseph W. Smith and wife Donna of Germanton; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jean Smith (widow of the late Lee Roy Smith Jr.) of Walkertown; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Ethel Clark of Walnut Cove; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 30, at Forsyth Memorial Park, with Pastor Don Harvey officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. SMITH
Mr. Henry Smith, 61, of 1401 Bethlehem Lane, passed away Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center following a period of illness. He was a native of Belews Creek, born Nov. 29, 1939, to Irene Shepherd Smith and the late Banks Smith. Mr. Smith was of the Baptist faith, and an employee of Piedmont Natural Gas Co. with over 36 years of service. He is survived by his dear mother Irene Shelf of Oak Ridge; sisters, Darlene Martin (William) of Winston-Salem, Maybelle Scott of Winston-Salem, Linda Scales of Jamestown, Dorothy Witherspoon of High Point, Barbara Siler (Renaldo) of High Point, Lorene Burns (Joseph) of Wallburg, Yvonne Vines (Glenn) of High Point, Margaret Shelf of High Point, and Josephine Thompson (Gary); brothers, L.C. Smith (Jean) of Winston-Salem, Banks Smith Jr. of Oak Ridge, Robert Shelf (Teresa) of High Point, Troy Shelf (Donna) of Greensboro, and James Elwood Shelf of Greensboro; his devoted friend, Betty Ree Commodore of the home; and other relatives and friends. THOMASON
LEXINGTON - Mr. Donald Mason Thomason, 73, of 100 Biesecker Road died Friday, July 27, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after two-week serious illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Second United Church of Christ, where he was a member. The Revs. Jerry Moore and Don Leonard will officiate. Burial will be at Forest Hill Memorial Park. Mr. Thomason was born Jan. 22, 1928, in Davidson County to Malcolm and Edith Stiers Thomason. He retired March 31, 1987, after 32 years service with the Lexington City Police Department. He also worked part time at the Lexington State Bank as a courier and was a member of the North Carolina Law Enforcement Association. He was a lifetime member of his church, where he was active in many church functions. Having served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3074 and American Legion Post 13. He played on the Bur-Mill Semi-Pro Baseball Team, as well as the Second United Church of Christ Softball Team, where he also umpired. He is survived by his wife Frances Mills Thomason of the home; a son, Jeffrey Thomason and wife Kathy of Lexington; a daughter, Amanda T. Swaim and husband Gordon of Lexington; two grandchildren, Justin Grubbs and Brittany Thomason, both of Lexington; sisters, Mary T. Koonts and husband Lonnie, and Pat T. Lax, both of Lexington, and Sue T. Cranford and husband Donnie of Thomasville; and a half sister, Estelle Thomason of Lexington. KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Frances Ellen Stevens Warren, 86, died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at Britthaven of Kernersville. Mrs. Warren was born in Lynchburg, Va., a daughter of the late William Henry and Annie Elizabeth Stevens, and attended the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Staunton, Va. She was a retiree of Burlington Industries and a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alton Loraine Warren; a daughter, Mary Ellen Warren; a brother, Louis Stevens; and a sister, Sarah Sayers. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Ronald Welborn of Kernersville; two granddaughters, Sharon (Mark) Apple of Kernersville, and Robin (Todd) Compton of Matthews; two great-granddaughters, August Compton and Jamie Apple; a sister, Mary Pauline Porter of Wilmington, Del.; a sister-in-law, Alene Crews of Kernersville; special friends, Sister Janis McQuade of Baltimore, Md., and Earlene and Alvin Crawford, and Phyllis Howell, all of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Lois Collins Whitaker, 68, of U.S. Highway 158, died Friday, July 27, 2001, at Allen Bennett Hospital in Greer, S.C. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Eaton Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Chris Clontz officiating. Interment will be in Smith Grove United Methodist Church cemetery. Mrs. Whitaker was born Oct. 4, 1932, in Lexington to the late Clifford Eugene Collins and Hazel Hanes Collins Hendrix. She was the co-owner of Whitaker Plumbing in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She was a member of Smith Grove United Methodist Church. Survivors include three children, Darrell Collins Whitaker of Ormond Beach, Fla., Michael Grady Whitaker of Delray Beach, Fla., and Sonya Whitaker Wiren of Greer, S.C.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

HAMPTONVILLE - Mrs. Helen Marie Carlson Coleman, 82, died Monday, July 23, 2001. Mrs. Coleman was born March 18, 1919, in Mitchell, S.D., to Francis William and Helen Bruitty Carlson. She was a homemaker and was of the Catholic faith. Mrs. Coleman was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband, William Howard Cole-man. Surviving are four children, Rickie (Shelia) Coleman of Pfaff-town, Frankie Coleman and Dixie (Roger) Hedrick of Hamptonville and Diana (Chester) Lambeth of Pilot Mountain; nine grand-children, Pati (Tracy) Miller, Sammy Sykes, Timmy Sykes, Chris (Donette) Sykes, Junior Coleman, Tracy Hedrick, Travis Hedrick, Scott Hedrick and Michelle (Todd) Cecil; and 12 great-grandchildren, Devin Miller, Cameron Miller, Kayla Miller, Autumn Miller; C.J. Sykes, Jake Sykes, Skylar Perkins, Kami Cecil, Mya Cecil, Chloe Cecil, Dustin Roberson and Brad Roberson. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Gentry Family Funeral Home Chapel, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville, by Pastor Ronnie Comer. Mrs. Johnnie Mae Gist Covington, 49, of 649 Kapp St., affectionately known to family and friends as "Pinkey" passed away Friday, July 20, 2001, at the Forsyth Medical Center after a period of illness. She was born in Winston-Salem Nov. 10, 1951, to Geneva Huntley and the late Johnny Gist. She attended Atkins High School, was employed at Salem College as a cook for 13 years and later at Winston-Salem State University for two years. Pinkey was a member of the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church and also attended Cleveland Avenue Christian Church. Pinkey and her husband, Ray Covington, also operated a catering service, "Pinkey and Ray's Catering." She is survived by her devoted husband, Ray Covington; mother Geneva Huntley; daughters Sophy Carter (Norman Sr.) and Katrina Kennedy (Ted); sons Johnny Fuller (Modonna) and James Fuller; stepson Terrance Payne; 12 grandchildren; sister Doris Gist, all of Winston-Salem; an aunt, Ollie Ward of Florida; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and devoted friends. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, July 27, 2001, at the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. John C. Parks officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. Mr. Waymond H. Hall of 2301 11th St. passed away July 25, 2001, at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joner D. Hall; his wife, Mrs. Carrie M. Hall; and a brother, Willie Joe Hall, all of Winston-Salem. Waymond is survived by two brothers, Milton (Jessie) Hall and Wilbert (Patricia) Hall; six sisters, Jessie K. Hall, Darlene (Jack) Hawkins, Wilma (Rufus) James, Margaret Hall, Eldora (Larry) Parker and Ore Lee (George) Holmes; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other close relatives and friends. LITTLEJOHN
Mr. Ben P. Littlejohn, 72, also known as "Ponzill," of 4205 Witherow Road passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born April 29, 1929, in Gaffney, S.C., to the late William and Carrie Littlejohn. Ben moved to Winston-Salem at an early age and attended Atkins High School. He left Winston-Salem and served in the U.S. Navy, where he received an honorable discharge. Ben moved to New York City in 1948 ,where he met and married his wife, Mary E. Gore. After 38 years of ded-icated service, he retired from Jack Sussman Inc. in 1990 and moved back to Winston-Salem. He joined Shiloh Baptist Church, where he was a member until he was called home to be with the Lord. Those who are left to cherish his loving memories are his devoted wife, Mary Littlejohn; two daughters, Cheryl Cannon of Winston-Salem and Kim Little-john of New York; three grand-children, Natoya, Daniel and Jasmine; an aunt, Lela Hoser of Gaffney, S.C.; two sisters, Ruby Meeks of Winston-Salem and Marie Littlejohn of New York; four nieces, Barbara, Sandra, Denise, Jeannie; a special and dear nephew, Dennis Meeks; and great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and special friends, who will forever share his memories. Mrs. Ethel Harrell Lunsford, 87, of Alspaugh St., died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at Springwood Care of Forsyth. Mrs. Lunsford was born in Forsyth County July 18, 1914, to Andrew J. Harrell and Celia May Harrell. She was a member of Woodland Baptist Church and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 30 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raleigh Lunsford; and a daughter, Betty Jean Lunsford. She is survived by two sons, Harvey Lunsford and wife Jean of Lewisville and Percy Lunsford and wife Geraldine of Rural Hall; and three stepdaughters, Hazel Smith, Ruby Spainhour and Ann Kiser, all of Stokes County. In addition, Mrs. Lunsford is survived by four grandchildren, Ric Lunsford, Cherie Young, Randy and Britt Lunsford; 10 stepgrandchildren; and several stepgreat-grandchildren. TOBACCOVILLE - Mr. Homer Lee Moore, 83, of Creek Farm Road died Tuesday, July 24, 2001. He was born July 11, 1918, in Forsyth County to Samuel A. and Effie Lillian Spainhour Moore. He was preceded in death by his wife, Earlene Puckett Moore in 1976; two sisters, Irene Bray and Ruth Bennett; and a brother, Ray H. Moore. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Roger Dale and Teresa Moore of Tobaccoville; a granddaughter, Patricia Green and great-granddaughter Taylor Ann Mercier of Walkertown; and three sisters, Evelyn Moore, Clarice Smith and Nellie Moore, all of King. STATE ROAD - Mr. Casey Shane Morris, 25, of 236 Briarwood-Mayberry Lane died Tuesday at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church by the Rev. John Attaway. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Mr. Morris was born in Columbus, Ohio, Sept. 23, 1975, to Kenneth C. and Joyce Stanley Morris. He was a 1994 graduate of East Wilkes High School and was employed by McDonald's in Jonesville. Surviving are his mother, Joyce S. Morris of the home; his father, Kenneth Morris of Moravian Falls; his fiancée, Bridget Jones; three brothers, Keith Rice of Rapid City, S.D., William (Anna) Rice of Jonesville, and Brian (Tammy) Rice of Mooresville; his maternal grandmother, Marie Stanley of Dry Branch, W.Va; and his paternal grandmother, Georgetta Morris of Fort Wayne, Ind. Mr. Reginald Leon Powell, 42, the son of the late George and Mary Burns Powell was called home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 22, 2001, at WFU Baptist Medical Center. SYKES
Mr. Howard Lloyd Sykes Sr., 77, of Winston-Salem passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Sykes was born in Forsyth County to the late James Wally and Ada Tate Sykes. He served in the U.S. Army and retired from McLean Trucking Co. after 38 Years as a mechanic. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Teamsters Local 391. Mr. Sykes had been an amateur-radio operator since September 1987 and was known by his call Letters N4RRZ. He was preceded in death by five brothers and a sister. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Linda Sykes Parker; a brother, Charlie Sykes; three sisters, Louise S. Boyles, Agnes Sykes and Ruby S. West, all of Winston-Salem; six grand-children; seven great-grand-children; and a special caregiver, Cherryl Dozier, and her two children, Amanda and Sarah, who Mr. Sykes considered as his own grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, July 27, 2001, at Oaklawn Memorial Park, with the Rev. Lee S. Glover officiating and military rites by the District 11 Memorial Honor Guard. THOMAS
WILKESBORO - Mrs. Virginia Estelle Miller Thomas, 80, of Winston Street died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at her home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 27, 2001, at Wilkesboro United Methodist Church with the Rev. Chris Fitzgerald and the Rev. Harry Sellers officiating. Entombment will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Mrs. Thomas was born June 5, 1921, in Wilkes County to Claude Young and Lois Yale Miller. She graduated from Lees-McRae College and Davis School of Nursing. In 1966, Mrs. Thomas became one of the first school nurses in the Wilkes County school system where she remained until her retirement in 1983. She had been an active member of Wilkesboro United Methodist Church since her childhood, serving in many leadership positions. She was an active Red Cross and Relay for Life volunteer. Mrs. Thomas was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Cricket Extension Homemakers, Wilkes County Democratic Women, AARP, RSP, NARFE and the Senior Center Advisory Council. She previously served as a board member of the Wilkes County Board of Health, Continuing Education Board, Domiciliary Board, Wilkes County Council on Aging, Blue Ridge Senior Games and treasurer of the Wilkes County Senior Democrats. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Aaron Thomas. She is survived by her husband, William Smith "Bill" Thomas Jr. of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Anita and Ray Ritchie of Freehold, N.J.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Sonny and Sandra Thomas of Winston-Salem, and Tom and Becki Thomas of Purlear; a brother, Yale Miller of Wilkesboro; and five grandchildren, Christina Ritchie of Waltham, Mass., Adam Ritchie of Atlantic Highlands, N.J., Elliott Thomas of Winston-Salem, and Leah Thomas and Andrew Thomas, both of Purlear.
