BENNETT
Mrs. Elna Marie Chitty Bennett, 82, of Winston-Salem, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Salemtowne/The Moravian Retirement Community. She was born Sept. 17, 1918, in Winston-Salem to Carl N. and Pearl Rothrock Chitty. Mrs. Bennett lived all her life in the Ardmore Community at 832 Brent St. before moving to Salemtowne. She was an active member of Christ Moravian Church where she sang in the church choir and taught Sunday School. She also was a member of the Senior Friends at the church. In the late 1940s, she was a member of the Vesper Singers, a quartet featured on WAIR Radio. She was preceded in death by her husband, Morrison E. Bennett, and a sister, Georgia L. Chitty. Survivors include two daughters, Suzi B. Coram and husband, Jackie, of Winston-Salem, and Kay B. Butner and husband, Stephen, of Clemmons; two sons, John M. Bennett and wife, Judy, of Downingtown, Penn., and Carl E. Bennett and wife, Karen, of Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren; a great-grandchild, and a sister, Lottie V. Chitty, of Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Christ Moravian Church by Dr. Samuel B. Marks. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. BROWN
Mrs. Kay Lawson Brown, 56, passed away at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on Monday, July 23, 2001. She grew up in King, the daughter of Fount and Mabel Lawson. Mrs. Brown was a member of Home Moravian Church. She worked at Wachovia Bank in Winston-Salem for 30 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Melvin "Bud" Lawson; and a grand-daughter, Rachael Kay Tatum. Surviving are her husband of 35 years, John E. Brown of the home; a daughter, Sherry Brown of Pennsylvania; three sisters, Marie Pulliam (husband Leo) of Eden, Guelda Hall (husband Cleo) and Lorene Clark (husband Conrad), all of Winston-Salem; sister-in-law Opal Lawson and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jean and Joe Brown of Winston-Salem; and two very special friends, Susan Sommercamp of Winston-Salem and Vicki Wray of Pinnacle. The Rev. Lehoma Goode of Home Moravian Church will officiate the service at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family will receive friends after the service. CHILDRESS
Mr. Grover Houston Childress, 75, of 2710 Melinda Drive, died Saturday evening at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Greenville, S.C., Feb. 24, 1926, to Grover Cleveland Childress and Enoree Albertson Childress. Mr. Childress served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1954, he was transferred from Greenville to Winston-Salem where he had a long career with Bahnson Service Co., retiring as a road supervisor. After his retirement, he bought and sold automobiles and dealt in real estate. Preceding him in death in 1971 was his wife, Martha Kellett Childress. Surviving are his son, Daniel Houston Childress, of Lewisville; his granddaughter, Martha Annette Childress, of Mocksville; a grandson, David Houston Childress II; and a great-grandson, Austin Payne Lowery; two brothers, Lee Childress of Mocksville, and Charles Childress of Greenville, S.C.; and a sister, Alma Davis of Summerfield, S.C. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Tom Wolff. Interment will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Greenville Memorial Gardens in Greenville, S.C. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Miracle Hill Children's Home in Greenville, S.C. CLODFELTER
Mrs. Selma Crews Clodfelter, 93, of Winston-Salem, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Clodfelter was born Dec. 11, 1907, in Winston-Salem to Joseph Wilber and Cora Phillips Crews. She was a member of Home Moravian Church where she was active in Sunday School and the Women's Fellowship for many years. She also served as a Diener. She was a graduate of Salem Academy and Salem College. Mrs. Clodfelter taught in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System. Most of her teaching career was at Forest Park Elementary School. During the early 1940s and 1950s, she was a member of the Winston-Salem City School Board. She was a Girl Scout Leader for many years for Troops #1 and #12. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry B. Clodfelter, and a daughter-in-law, Sandra A. Clodfelter. Survivors include a son, H. Brown Clodfelter Jr. of Clemmons; a daughter, Diana Clodfelter Graham and husband, Maynard, of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Matt Graham and wife, Jennifer, of Winston-Salem, Molly Rucker and husband, David, of Winston-Salem, Ben Graham and wife, Jessica, of Asheville, and John Z. Clodfelter of Clemmons; two sisters-in-law, Norrine Clodfelter of Union Cross, and Ruth Patterson and husband, Tom, of Winston-Salem; and a niece, Lynn Hayes and husband Johnnie of Kernersville.. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Moravian Graveyard by Bishop J.C. Hughes and the Rev. C. Scott Venable III. The family will receive friends following the service in the Church Parlor of Home Moravian Church. The family would like to thank the staff of Vienna Village for their loving care for the past two years. MOORESVILLE - Mrs. Lucy Horton Follette, 93, of 470 N. Broad St. died July 21, 2001, at Grace Hospital in Morganton. She was born Feb. 15, 1908, in Iredell County to Rose Poole Horton and George Horton. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Follette was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, C.C. "Coot" Follette; and a son, Richard "Babe" Follette. Surviving are two sons, Rufus Follette and wife, Virginia, of Clemmons and Henry Follette and wife, Dixie, of Salisbury; two daughters, Rose Follette Foust and husband, Clinton, of Morganton and Christeen Follette Bowman and husband, John, of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Dates Horton of China Grove; a sister, Evelyn Patterson of China Grove; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Neill Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. Harvey Rogers. Burial will be in Glenwood Memorial Park. ROCKINGHAM - Miss Ariel Morgan Fox, 10-day-old daughter of Robert and Kimberly Lane Culler-Fox died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. She was born July 12, 2001. Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her brother, Adam Carlton Lee Fox; her sister, Kirsten Danielle Fox; her maternal grandmother, Pat Culler of Rockingham; and her paternal grandparents, Robert and Ruth Fox of Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Carlton Culler. Private services will be held today. The family will be at the home of Pat Culler, 1202 Old Salem Road, Rockingham. Carter Funeral Home of Rockingham is serving the Fox family.

Mrs. Janie Lorraine Hairston Jeter, 53, of 1101 E. 30th St. passed away Friday, July 20, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center following a period of illness. She was born June 12, 1948, in Forsyth County. Ms. Jeter attended Macedonia TVPH Church of God Inc. where she was a member of the trustee board. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Daughter of Isaac, Elizabeth Chapter 310 and co-owner of Circle "J" Food Stores Number 1 and Number 2 for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Lee and Catherine Annie Hairston; and two brothers, Andrew and Phillip A. Hairston. She leaves to cherish her memories her loving husband, Matthew Jeter; two daughters, Anita Diane Williams and Carolyn Williams; two stepdaughters, April Jeter Harper and Covina Gordon; a goddaughter, Sandra Carmichael; two sons, Thomas Lamont Williams and Isaac Eugene Williams; a godson, Johnnie Lee Myers; two sisters, Velma Diane Carelock and Marcene Hairston; a brother, Harold William Hairston; a brother-in-law, Willie Jeter; seven grandchildren; an aunt, May Frances Preston of Ridgeway, Va.; three uncles, Nelson Alexander Petree, Jessie Gene Petree and Robert Petree; a great-uncle, Elmer (Valine) Banner; a devoted friend, Ms. Maxine Gwyn; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many many friends. MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Vellie Jane Hooker Martin, 93, of 1471 Deer Road, widow of Charles Otis Martin, passed away Sunday, July 22, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Martin was born in Surry County Sept. 24, 1907, the daughter of the late Bud and Pencie Goins Hooker. She was a homemaker and member of Asbury Presbyterian Church. Survivors include four daughters and a son-in-law, Iris Louise Jessup, of Pilot Mountain, Lavinia Fouts of Thomasville, Shelby Cooke of Westfield and Linda and Billy Brindle of Pilot Mountain; five sons and four daughters-in-law, Clarence Lee and Nellie Martin of Westfield, William Thomas and Brooksy Martin of Lawsonville, Denville R. Martin of the home, Dewey M. and Linda Martin of Mount Airy and Justin Wayne and Sharon Martin of King; 25 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by four sons, Charles Lindburgh Martin, John Calvin Martin, Donald Martin and Ronald Martin; two grandsons, Rodney Allen Cooke and Calvin Jessup; and several brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at Asbury Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Robert E. Button, the Rev. Ricky Rogers and the Rev. Allen Morrison. Mr. C.J. Porter Jr., 80, died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Oaks Nursing Home in Winston-Salem. Mr. Porter was born July 13, 1921, to Bertie and Camet Jackson Porter in Independence, Va. He worked many years at Burlington Textile Mills in Galax and Weber Washer Company in Winston-Salem. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church on Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, and a board member of the Joy Ranch Children's Home in Hillsville, Va. He is survived by his wife, Claudine of Homestead Hills retirement community, Winston-Salem; his daughter, Nancy Atakan and her husband, Mehmet Atakan of Istanbul; his sister, Nancy Felts; and a brother, Philip Porter of Galax; his grandson, Alp Atakan and his fiancee, Jessica Hirsch of New York; his grandson, Cem Atakan and his wife, Ela Basak of New York; his Greene family cousins; and his brother-in-law, Carl Rector and his wife, Jackie of Galax. ATLANTIC BEACH - Mr. Glenn Raymond Saylor Sr., 65, died Monday, July 23, 2001, after a brief illness at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem. He was born Oct. 4, 1935, in Forsyth County to Willie Edwin and Lena Wolfe Saylor Sr. Mr. Saylor retired in 1989 from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. Having started his career as a stock room employee at age 18, he finished his career as processing division training manager. He served several years in the U.S. Navy Reserves. Mr. Saylor enjoyed saltwater fishing and dove hunting with his friends and family. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Morehead City. He was serving as a member of the Board of Adjustment of the town of Atlantic Beach. Mr. Saylor was preceded in death by his two brothers, Willie Edwin Saylor Jr. and Milton John Saylor. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia S. Saylor, of the home; three sons, Glenn Raymond Saylor Jr. and wife, Wanda, of Roanoke Rapids, Scott Martin Saylor and wife, Frances, of Raleigh and Brian Lee Saylor and wife, Angela, of Mooresville: two stepdaughters, Kathi K. Dubel and husband, John, of Greensboro and Kim K. Bresnahan and husband, Chris, of Chesapeake Va.: 12 grand- children; and a niece, Milane Moroff, of Charlotte. NEW YORK, N.Y. - Ms. Shirley Davis Stone, 90 Convent Ave. Apt. 33, passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at Mount Sinai Hospital. She was a native of Winston-Salem and was a retired employee of O.S.B. She was the daughter of the late Myrtle Davis Pearson and Charles Stokes. She is survived by a daughter, Deborah Stone-Wimber (Willie); a son, Ronald Stone, both of New York, N.Y.; a great-granddaughter, Tasaria Clark-Stone of Brooklyn, N.Y.; an aunt, Mabel Davis Evans of Winston-Salem; an uncle, James H. Davis of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today, July 24, 2001, at Calvary Hill Church of Greater Deliverance, where Bishop C.C. Mrs. Margaret James Transou, 89, formerly of Hawthorne Road SW in Winston-Salem, died Sunday morning July 22, 2001, at Carolina Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Greensboro. She was born July 2, 1912, in Davie County to Thomas and Candace Cope James. Mrs. Transou was a lifelong member of Ardmore Baptist Church and worked in the Mothers Morning Out program. She was preceded in death by her husband Hal G. Transou. Surviving are a son, Hal G. Transou Jr. and his wife Mary Coleman Transou of Greensboro; two grandsons and their wives, Tripp and Susie Transou of Tallahassee, Fla.; and Scott and Melissa Transou of South Bend, Ind.; and five great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Forsyth Memorial Park by the Rev. Ty Talton. YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Ardee Long Vestal, 86, of Cox Mill Road died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at her home. She had been in declining health for several years. She was a member of Center United Methodist Church and the Adult Women's Sunday school class. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to her family. Mrs. Vestal was born in Yadkin County to Blum and Mary Holcomb Long on Sept. 14, 1914. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Willie Taft Vestal, in September 1999; and a sister, Floy Long Fleming. She is survived by two sons, Johnson (Helen) Vestal and Charles (Sara) Vestal, all of Yadkinville; five grandchildren, Kristi (Mark) Maier of Greensboro, Julia (Trent) Perry of Kernersville, Crystal (Brad) Sprague of Hermitage, Tenn., Penny Vestal of Murfeesboro, Tenn. and Justin Vestal of Yadkinville; a great-grandchild, Tyler Matthew Sprague; a brother; Ernest Long of Yadkinville; and special caregivers, Ruby Snow, Mary Smith and Pat Nixon. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, at Center United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Oliver W. Helsabeck. Mrs. Vestal will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. SILOAM - Mrs. Annie Mae Mayes Wall, 82, widow of Charlie Elmer Wall, of 116 Hardy Road, passed away Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Feb. 11, 1919, in Surry County to Johnny Edward and Lela Hayes Mayes. Mrs. Wall was a homemaker and charter member of Siloam Friends Meeting. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Joyce Burchette of Advance, and Jackie March and husband Al of Siloam; three sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby Wall and wife Margaret of Mount Airy, Bill "Glenn Ray" Wall and fiancee Sue Hines of Siloam, and Edgar Wall and wife Annie Lee of Siloam; an adopted son, Dwight Holder of Siloam; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ellis Mayes of Pilot Mountain, and Lester Mayes of Elkin; and five sisters, Kathleen Brown, Jestine Eads, and Christine Pike, all of Siloam, Reynolda Newman of Elkin, and Peggy Holyfield of Dobson. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, at Siloam Friends Meeting. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Charles Edward Welch, 52, died Monday, July 23, 2001. Mr. Welch was born March 31, 1948, in Forsyth County to the late Verlin L. "Buck" and Daphney Cook Welch. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Peggy Bodenhamer of Kernersville and Mrs. Barbara Solomon of Winston-Salem; a brother, Robert Welch of Winston-Salem; four nieces; and two nephews. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Winston-Salem by the Rev. Garland Glascoe. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home in Kernersville.
