Nora Livengood Ketner
Nora Livengood Ketner, 90, of Winston-Salem died January 22 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born September 14, 1913, in Forsyth County to Walter L. and Annie Livengood. She was a lifelong member of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Wilson Ketner; and three sisters, Estelle Beckner, Carrie Shields and Iretha Sowers.
Surviving are a son, Wayne Ketner and wife Carolyn of Winston-Salem; four brothers, Francis Livengood and wife Ruth Ann of Lewisville, Rev. Arthur Livengood and wife Gladys of Pinnacle, Carl Livengood and wife Elma of Winston-Salem, and Raymond Livengood and wife Frances of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Frankie Campbell and Louella Davis, both of Winston-Salem; and three devoted friends, Mary Pitts, Ann Easterwood and Mike Pfaff.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Derry Barnhardt officiating. A private burial was held in Mount Tabor United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Robert Gray Smith Sr.
Robert Gray Smith Sr., 67, of Clemmons died January 20 at his home. He was born December 11, 1936, in Forsyth County to Duel Tuberose and Stella Jones Smith. He was of the Baptist faith and was retired from Smith & Smith Construction Co. He was preceded in death by a son, Duel “Ed” Smith, in December 1993; and his father, Duel Smith.
Surviving are four daughters, Theresa Smith and Marsha House of Fuquay-Varina, Linda Smith of Mount Airy and Vanessa Taylor of Lexington; a son, Bobby Smith of Farmington; his mother, of the home; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Martha S. Koontz, Barbara S. Vernon and Linda S. Batten, all of Clemmons; and four brothers, D.T. Smith Jr. of Merry Hill and Richard E. Smith, Jerry W. Smith and Otis G. Smith, all of Clemmons.
A graveside service was held at Immanuel Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Elliott Smith and Pastor L.C. Taylor officiating.
Kristina Allen Reynolds
Kristina Allen Reynolds of Lewisville died January 14 at her home. She was born in Frankfort, Germany, to William and Julianna Allen.
Surviving are a son, Jason Reynolds of Denver, Colo.; a daughter, Dr. Adrianne Reynolds Myers and husband Keith of Safety Harbor, Fla.; and a great-aunt, Dorothy Terry of Corpus Christi, Texas.
A memorial service was held.
Bryan Christopher Crater
Bryan Christopher Crater, 13, of Clemmons died January 23 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Short Hills, N.J., on August 18, 1990, to Terry Lee and Joanne Marcantonio Crater. He was in the eighth grade at Meadowlark Middle School, where he was an honor student, National Junior Honor Society, Crosby Scholar and played the oboe in band. He was very active in his church, Holy Family Catholic Church, where he was an altar server, peer minister and a squire. His passions included playing baseball for the Northwest Forsyth American Little League, dirt biking, video games and playing the drums. He delighted many people by resolving their computer problems and especially enjoyed walking “Elvis” and “Murphy.”
Surviving are his parents; his grandparents, Jean Marcantonio and E.R. and Edna Crater; his brothers, Marty Crater and wife Wendy, Bart Crater and wife Angie and Rodney Crater and wife Jill; his uncles, Victor Marcantonio and David Marcantonio and wife Melissa; his aunts, Theresa Young and husband Donnie, Diane Flippin and husband Tony and Pam Long and husband John; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held at Holy Family Catholic Church, and burial followed in West Lawn Gardens.
Sara Carnes McClellan
Sara Carnes McClellan, 86, a resident of Clemmons Village II, died January 18. She was born April 26, 1917, in Lancaster, S.C., to Rufus and Elizabeth Carnes. She lived 50 years of her adult life in Charlotte and was a homemaker who loved cooking and was an avid gardener. Following her husband’s death, she began a career at Belk’s Department Store in the South Park Mall in Charlotte, from where she retired. After retirement, she enjoyed ballroom dancing, dancing competitively, winning trophies and taking part in many competitions, fulfilling a lifelong dream. She was preceded in death by her husband, Austin Crocker McClellan, in 1967 and by a daughter, Sandra M. Lomax, in 1990.
Surviving are two daughters, Cynthia Pittard and husband Jess of Smithfield and Suzie M. Matthews and husband Monty of Fleetwood; a son, Jeff Austin McClellan and wife Jann of Charlotte; seven grandchildren, Laura L. Levinson, Emily L. Matouskava, Jennifer T. Lambie, Jonathan J. Pittard, Bradley A. Pittard, Austin M. McClellan and Taylor B. McClellan; a great-grandson, Benjamin Levinson; a sister, Grace King of Charlotte; and a brother, Paul Carnes of Lancaster, S.C.
A graveside service was held at the Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte.
Mark Alan Kapp
Mark Alan Kapp, 45, of Winston-Salem died January 18 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home following a brief period of declining health. A native of Forsyth County, he was born September 11, 1958, to Artis K. and Nancy Long Kapp. Mark was of the Moravian faith and had attended Mizpah Moravian Church as a child. He serbed into the U.S. Coast Guard and was employed by Budd Security Service for the past 10 years. He was preceded in death by his mother, Nancy Long Sink, on December 24, 2003.
Surviving are his constant companion, his loving dog “Bud;” his father and stepmother, Artis K. and Brenda Z. Kapp of Rural Hall; four brothers and sisters, Zachary T. Kapp and wife DeAnn of Winston-Salem, Laurie A. Winning and husband James of Clemmons, Ed Sturgill of Winston-Salem, and Robin Bechmeyer and husband Rick of King; a special uncle, Danald Colbert and his family; and several other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Rural Hall Chapel with Rev. John Boling officiating.
Warjunia Alsbrooks Wall
Warjunia Alsbrooks Wall, 81, of Clemmons died January 21 at Forsyth Medical Center.was born in Winston-Salem to the late Vontanna Alsbrooks and Earlie Richardson Alsbrooks on August 7, 1922. She was retired from Modern Chevrolet Co.
Surviving are her husband, Albert Wall of the home; a daughter, Hilda Dillard Hodge of Winston-Salem; a stepdaughter, Tommie Gengo and husband Hoarce of Winston-Salem; two sons, Richard Dillard and wife Lisa of Winston-Salem and Lorenzo Dillard and wife Shirley of Winston-Salem; a stepson, Wade Wall and wife Kay of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Juanita Montgomery and husband Fred and Verte Foggie and husband Thomas, both of Winston-Salem; a special niece, Barbara A. Cain of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren, Richard Levon Dillard Jr., Ester Maria Johnson, Adrienne Hodge Smith, Tammi Hodge Hyman, Leah Hodge, Elmia Hodge and Clayton Hodge, all of Winston-Salem; a host of great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Hazel Black, Betty Dillard and Elizabeth Speight; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at Dreamland Park Missionary Baptist church with Rev. Ronald Fisher Sr. officiating, and burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons.
Ruth Boose
Ruth Boose, 88, formerly of Lewisville died January 17 at the residence of her daughter, Nona White, in Morgantown, W.Va. She was born February 14, 1915, in Forsyth County, the daughter of the late Henry Luther and Susan Doub McBride. She was a member of the Union United Methodist Church in Lewisville, where she was an active participant in church affairs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey E. Boose Sr.; three brothers; and a sister.
Surviving are by a daughter, Nona White and husband Ernest; a son, Harvey E. Boose Jr., both of Morgantown, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Kaye Parker of Eden, Jennifer Zinn of Hidleburg, Germany, and William White of Greensboro; and two great-grandchildren, Savannah Parker and Elizabeth Zinn.
Funeral services were held at Union United Methodist Church with Rev. Thomas W. Albert and Rev. Edwin Needham officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Julia Zimmerman Hensley
Julia Zimmerman Hensley, 86, of Meadowbrook Manor in Clemmons died January 19 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Davidson County on July 5, 1917, to Lewis and Emily Heath Zimmerman. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Lewis Hensley; two grandchildren, Terri and Vicki Vogler; two brothers; and two sisters.
Surviving are a daughter, Shelby Vogler and husband A.C. of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Johnna Stewart and husband Chad of Myrtle Beach and Tony Vogler of Welcome; four great-grandchildren, Kasey Sennett, Lewis Vogler, Amanda Vogler and Presley Vogler; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum with Evangelist Patrick Winfrey officiating.
Margaret Gobble
Margaret Gobble, 76, of Clemmons died February 10. She was born August 17, 1927, in Forsyth County to Henry L. and Virginia Sofley Foster. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and a devoted Christian and friend to all. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years; her parents; and three brothers.
Surviving are her daughter, Katie Mashburn and husband Jimmy of Wallburg; four sons, Stamey Gobble and wife Jean of Advance, Bobby Gobble and wife Diane of Rural Hall, Ricky Gobble and wife Kay of Wallburg and Kent Gobble of Clemmons; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Linda White of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel, and burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
Haley Ann Craig Yates
Haley Ann Craig Yates, 93, of King died February 14 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born December 6, 1910, in Stuart, Va., to Eddie and Rose Ann White Justice. She devoted her life to her family and was a homemaker and farmer. She was a member of Mountainview Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 14 years, Charlie Craig; her husband of 31 years, John Henry Yates; two children, Duke Craig and Audrey Heath; and several sisters and brothers.
Surviving are 12 children, J.C. Craig of Gaithersburg, Md., Ruth Warner of Clemmons, Curtis Craig, Montie Craig and Jean Vaterlaus, all of Madison, James Craig of Walnut Cove, Linda Cromer of Madison, Ann Barr, Bud Yates and Steve Yates, all of King, Mary Watts of Walnut Cove and Eddie Yates of Pinnacle; a sister, Susie Kiser of Madison; 35 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral servies were held at Mountainview Baptist Church with Pastor Jim Saul, Pastor Richard Tuttle and Rev. Kenneth Warner officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Johnsie Martin Kinnamon
Johnsie Martin Kinnamon, 93, of Charlotte, wife of the late Charles W. Kinnamon, died February 8 in Maidens, Va., at the home of her daughter, Ruth Denham. She was born March 17, 1910, in Lewisville, a daughter of the late Walter and Bertha Martin. She married Charlie in 1935 and they moved to Charlotte in 1947 with their five children. In addition to raising the children, she held various positions outside the home, retiring from Frito Lay. She was a member of the Derita OES 326 and served a term as Worthy Matron. Before moving to Maidens, Va., she lived in Huntersville and attended Hopewell Presbyterian Church with membership in the Wayland Sunday School Class. Her great love was her garden, and she loved being with people as well. To enjoy both, she spent many Saturdays selling produce and flowers at the Cornelius Farmers Market until her health declined. In addition to her husband, Charles, she was preceded in death by her son, James Kinnamon.
Surviving are her sister, Ruth Hurtt of Lewisville; a daughter, Ruth Denham and husband Fred of Maidens, Va.; three sons, C. Wesley Kinnamon and wife Ruth of Mooresville, John W. Kinnamon and wife Gail of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Roy M. Kinnamon and wife Linda of Charlotte; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held in the cemetery of Hopewell Presbyterian Church.
Ben Weldon Atkinson Jr.
Ben Weldon “B.W.” Atkinson Jr., 75, of Pfafftown died February 8 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Forsyth County on March 21, 1928, the son of Ben Weldon Atkinson Sr. and Laura Holleman. In 1951, he was hired as the first Forsyth County firefighter. He would eventually serve as captain. He was also a volunteer firefighter with the Old Richmond Fire Department for over 30 years. In 1969 he became the director of Forsyth County EMS, where he would remain until his retirement in 1985. After becoming qualified to train new EMS personnel, he was also instrumental in bringing the first EMT training course to Forsyth County. He was inducted into the Winston-Salem Forsyth County High School Sports Hall of Fame in 1987. He was a member of Pfafftown Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Amos Atkinson.
Surviving are a daughter, Laura Hauser of Winston-Salem; two sons, Greg Atkinson of Winston-Salem and Jeff Atkinson of Pfafftown; a grandson, Joshua Fields, of Winston-Salem; and a sister, Betty Opengari and husband Pete of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with Rev. Craig Bowman officiating, and burial with honors conducted by the Forsyth County EMS Honor Guard followed in Forsyth Memorial Park.
Jerry Lee Whittington
Jerry Lee Whittington, 49, of Randleman died February 8 at UNC-Hospitals in Chapel Hill. He was a native of Hamlet and formerly a self-employed carpenter. He formerly raced in the NASCAR Dash Series.
Surviving are his wife, Leslie “Nicky” Whittington of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Danielle Joyner of Kernersville and Meagan Drake of Winston-Salem; a son, Jason Strucinski of Clemmons; a godson, Jerry Lee Whittington of Randleman; two grandchildren; his mother, Hazel McNeill Whittington of Asheboro; two sisters, Pat Fruitt of Asheboro and Mary Idol of Randleman; three brothers, Harry Whittington of Randleman and Gene Whittington and Dwight Whittington, both of Franklinville; and a stepsister, Mary Frances Raines of Ellerbe.
Funeral services were held at Whitehall Evangelical Methodist Church with Rev. Aaron Robbins and Rev. Jesse Wallace officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Lee Eugene Hartman
Lee Eugene Hartman, 80, of Winston-Salem died February 14. He was born March 11, 1923, to the late Oliver Lee and Viola Fishel Hartman. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Iona W. Hartman, of the home; a son, Danny Hartman of Winston-Salem; two brothers, John Hartman of Clemmons and Wayne Hartman and wife Rhonda of Arcadia; and two sisters, Ethel James and husband Foy of Lexington and Emma Locklear and husband Lynn of Roanoke, Va.
Mary Maybell Lane Jester
Mary Maybell Lane Jester, 77, of Winston-Salem died February 12 after months of declining health. She was born March 2, 1926, in Stokes County to Dallas and Ivy Lane. She retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 33 years of service. She was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church. Her joy was her family. Upon visits to her home, guests were always greeted with hugs and a table full of home-cooked food. Extra guests were always welcome and considered family. She loved all children and considered them all as belonging to her. There was always enough time to play with them and show them love. Other enjoyments were camping, fishing, crafts and gardening. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 57 years, Harding C. Jester; two brothers, Grey and Moir Lane; and a sister, Quma (Pam) Powell.
Surviving are a son, Danny Jester of Clemmons; a daughter, Roxie Triplett of Efland; a daughter-in-law, Kim Jester of Clemmons; three brothers: Harold Lane of Clemmons and Bobby Lane and Arley Lane, both of Lewisville; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; numerous nieces and nephews; and her devoted friend, Robert Yokley of East Bend.
Funeral services were held at Vogler’s Funeral Home in Clemmons with Dr. Bud Owen officiating,and burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
Nora Lee Stantliff Bartley
Nora Lee Stantliff Bartley, 77, of Mount Airy, widow of Willie Alex Bartley, died February 14 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born April 17, 1926, in Carroll County to James Taylor and Zora Bedsaul Stantliff. She was a loving mother and grandmother and was a longtime member of Bannertown Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Gary Bartley and wife Sandra of Lewisville; a grandson, Nathan Bartley of Mount Airy; and a great-granddaughter, Mikayla Bartley of Pinnacle.
Funeral services were held at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Allred officiating, and burial followed in Skyline Memory Gardens.
William Henry Wrights Jr.
William Henry Wrights Jr., 79, of Valparaiso, Fla. died February 6 at his home. He was preceded in death by his brother, Roy Wrights.
Surviving are his wife, Ila M. Wrights of Valparaiso; three daughters, Terrie Olson and husband Roger of Tarpon Springs, Fla., Jackie Bass and husband Sam of Dunnellon, Fla. and Shirley Allen of Niceville, Fla.; four brothers, Harry Wrights and wife Bonnie, Lloyd Wrights, Allen Wrights and wife Dot, and Gene Wrights and wife Janet; a sister-in-law, Jo Ann Wrights; and four sisters, Lucille Wood, Onie McVay and husband Charles, Nancy Morgan and Judy Bowen.
Funeral services were held at Heritage Gardens Funeral Home with Chaplain Donald Smith officiating, and burial followed in Sunset Cemetery.
Paul G. Baynes Jr.
Paul G. Baynes Jr., 66, of Winston-Salem died February 13 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born August 6, 1937, in Forsyth County to Paul G. Baynes Sr. and Vesta McMillan Baynes. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was retired from RJR Tobacco Co. with 26 1/2 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Carol Adams Baynes of the home; two daughters, Robin McKeown and husband Kenny of Clemmons and Paula Gavlik of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Lauren, Adam, and Austin McKeown and John-Paul and Thomas Gavlik; three sisters, Joan Green and husband Rudy of Fayetteville, Loretta McClain and husband C.B. and Debbie Coley, all of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Wayne Baynes and wife Gail of Mocksville.
Funeral services were held at Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Doug Gilbert officiating, and burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons.
Lillian Pilcher Reich
Lillian Pilcher Reich, 85, of Lewisville died February 10 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She was born April 24, 1918, in Yadkin County to Calvin Enos and Laura Ann Matthews Pilcher. She was a member of Enon Baptist Church and had retired from AT&T. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Blanche Matthews and Grace Smith; and two brothers, Howard and Sanford Pilcher.
Surviving are her husband, Jewel Olester Reich of the home; three daughters, Shirley Hall and husband Will of Winston-Salem, Kay Roberts and husband Jerry of Lewisville and Faye Lawson and husband Mike of Pfafftown; a son; 8 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend with Rev. Mark Elmore and Rev. Albert Thomas officiating, and burial followed at Enon Baptist Church Cemetery.
Thomas Alton Spainhour
Thomas Alton Spainhour, 72, of Winston-Salem, son of Cleo Wilson and Martha Frye Spainhour, died February 12 at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons. He was born April 14, 1931, in Forsyth County. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Jonestown Baptist Church. His father and his wife, Stella Lowery Spainhour, preceded him in death.
Surviving are his mother, Martha Frye Spainhour of Clemmons; a son, William Spainhour and wife Brenda of Lexington; a daughter, Martha Willis and husband Gary of Clemmons; and two grandchildren, Virginia and Jack Willis.
A graveside service was held at Jonestown Baptist Church with Minister Gaston Shortt officiating.
