Hazel Whisnant Parker
Hazel Whisnant Parker, 85, of Pfafftown, the wife of the late Dewey “Ed” Edison Parker, died April 20 at Universal Health Care in King. She was born in Burke County on August 24, 1917, to Robert Issac and Annabelle Fleming Whisnant. She retired from Pilot Freight Carrier, where she was employed in the accounting department. She was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Jerry Parker, and David Parker, both of Pfafftown; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Joyce Foster and Jean Fishel, both of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with Dr. Gus Thomas and Dr. Cecil Cave officiating, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
David L. Hole
David L. Hole, 62, of Lawsonville died April 17 at his home. He was born October 8, 1940, in Stokes County, the son of the late Cary and Clara Priddy Hole. He was retried from Dupont in Martinsville, Va., and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Phyllis Moore Hole; two sons, Anthony Hole and wife Sara of Clemmons and Jeffrey Hole of Orlando, Fla.; a daughter, Melanie Burris and husband Bobby of Winston-Salem; a sister, Barbara Neal and husband Allan of Danbury; a brother, Billy J. Hole and wife Arlene Hole of Mebane; and three grandchildren, Emily Hole and Hannah Hole of Orlando and Nicholas Hole of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held at Nelson Funeral Home in Danbury with Elder Milton Gunter and Rev. Eugene Payne officiating, and burial followed at Snow Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Glenda Lavon Petty Collins
Glenda Lavon Petty Collins, 50, of Clemmons died April 19 at her home. She was born October 16, 1952, in Forsyth County to Loma Jean Petty. She was a member of Friends Baptist Church. She enjoyed going with her husband to cruise-ins when able and enjoyed late night rides in her husband’s 1931 Ford Hot Rod and 1965 Chevy pickup. She also loved camping and swimming.
Surviving are her loving husband of 30 years, Galen N. Collins of the home; two sons, Matthew Shane Collins of the U.S. Army and Ryan Neal Collins of Clemmons; a sister, Rhonda Jean Joyce of Rural Hall; and a brother, Michael Guy Petty of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor David Benton officiating, and burial followed at Parklawn Memorial Gardens.
Margie Free Richardson
Margie Free Richardson, 77, of Winston-Salem died April 18 at Springwood Care Center. She was born July 14, 1925, in Lexington County, S.C., to Leonard Ephrim and Clara Moak Free. She was a member of Augsburg Lutheran Church. Her parents and one brother, Leonard E. Free Jr., preceded her in death.
Surviving are her husband, James P. Richardson of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Paulette Palmer and husband Ronnie of Lewisville and Rita Bailey and husband Charles of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Master Sgt. Keith Palmer, U.S.A.F., of Okinawa, Japan, and Kim Shouse and husband William “Ernie” of Winston-Salem; and two great-grandchildren, Jonah and Gabriel Shouse.
A memorial service was held at Augsburg Lutheran Church with Dr. Ronald Rinn and Pastor Shirley Harrison officiating. A graveside service followed in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
Ida Scales
Ida Scales, 83, of Pfafftown died April 17 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born November 15, 1919, in Kingstree, S.C., to Ephariam Chandler. She was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds. She was a member of Gethsemane Hope Baptist and Old Carver Senior Citizens and the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Scales.
Surviving are her son, Henry Kennedy Jr. and wife LaShawn of the home; a brother, Lelann Chandler Sr.; grandchildren, Kristopher Michael Kennedy of Woodbridge, Va., Ariel Cheyanne Calderon, Dante Xavier Calderon, Devante Jachai Calderon, all of the home; a sister-in-law, Lena M. Chandler; a special cousin, Mary Lee Martin; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at Gethsemane Hope Baptist Church with Pastor Ernest McLauren officiating, and burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery.
Larry Gregory Wright
Larry Gregory Wright, 56, of Kernersville died April 17 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born on August 30, 1946, in Randolph County, a son of the late Luther Wade and Aubra Hunt Wright. He was a decorated U.S. Army veteran. He worked for Kayser-Roth Corp. for 31 years where he became senior vice president and later was senior vice president for Shogren Manufacturing in Concord. He was involved with the Kernersville Little League for 20 years. He was the co-pastor, with his wife, of Cornerstone Community Church in Kernersville.
Surviving are his wife, Rev. Judy Mabe Wright of the home; two sons, Jason Erin Wright and wife Julie of Clemmons and Jon-Paul Gregory Wright and wife Tonya of Kernersville; a daughter, Robin Wright Denny and husband Barry of Belews Creek; a brother, Dr. Keith Wright of North Myrtle Beach; a sister, Barbara Mayer of Florida; his grandchildren, Brittany Denny, Joshua Denny, Brooke Wright, and Logan Wade Wright; aunts, Marietta Roberts and Yvonne Garner; and uncles, George Hunt and T.J. Hunt.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel with Rev. Tommy McGhee, Rev. Jack Waters and Elder Joan Fuller officiating, and burial followed in Mount Gur Cemetery.
Josephine H. Crouch Quate
Josephine “Jo” H. Crouch Quate, 87, who collected money for the Salvation Army on the streets of Winston-Salem for more then 40 years, died April 21 at Westchester Manor of High Point after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was a true witness for the Lord and touched many hearts. She was a former member of the Salvation Army Church and of Bible Wesleyan Church. She was preceded in death by two husbands, William B. Crouch and Herman Quate.
Surviving are her son, John Nelson Crouch and wife Janet of Kernersville; two daughters, Shirley C. Pressley and husband Grover of Clemmons and Billie McKnight of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Stamie Smith and husband and Harry of Lexington.
A private memorial service was held at Parklawn Memorial Gardens with Rev. Jennings O’Neil officiating.
Bettie Adine Blumenschein Burke
Bettie Adine Blumenschein Burke, 83, of Winston-Salem died April 23 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born January 9, 1920, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Ernest and Maude Blumenschein. She was a member of Calvary Moravian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Burke Sr.; and a sister, Jeanne Tanberg and her husband, Brig. Gen. Lawrence F. Tanberg (Ret. USAF), of Sumter, S.C.
Surviving are two sons, George W. “Bill” Burke Jr. and wife Ramona of Winston-Salem and Robert E. “Bob” Burke and wife Martha of Clemmons; a daughter, Judy B. Ludwick of the home; six grandchildren, George “William” Burke III and wife Audra of Kernersville, Dr. Andrea B. Redd and husband Billy of Virgilina, Va., Janine L. Heizer and husband Erik of Washington, N.C., Kristin B. Leahy and husband Jeff of Raleigh, Christopher E. Burke of Clemmons and James W. “Jay” Ludwick Jr. of Winston-Salem; three great-grandchildren, William “Carlton” Redd Jr. of Virgilina, Va., George “Allen” Burke of Kernersville and Reilly “Brae” Heizer of Washington, N.C.; a brother, Bud O. Blumenschein of Springfield, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Calvary Moravian Church with Bishop Lane Sapp officiating, and burial followed in the Moravian Graveyard.
Bleeka Ray Mullis Boatright
Bleeka Ray Mullis Boatright, 90, of Waxhaw died April 22, at Hospice House No. 2 in Monroe, surrounded by all seven of her children celebrating her birthday. She was born April 22, 1913, in Union County, a daughter of the late James Lex Mullis and the late Lillian Cleone Yarborough Mullis. She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, James Bennett “J.B.” Boatright, in 1986; a sister, Gladys Boatright of Gastonia; and a brother, J. Lex Mullis of Ohio.
Surviving are her three daughters, Peggy Golias and husband Bill of Clemmons and Alice Redwine and husband Bill and Dixie Patterson and husband Delano, all of Waxhaw; four sons, Neil Boatright and wife Willie of Locust, Jerry Boatright and wife Jean of Lancaster, S.C., and Danny Boatright and wife Nancy and Bonnie Boatright and wife Vicki, all of Waxhaw; a brother, James Albert Mullis of Waxhaw; 14 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Union United Methodist Church with Rev. Jonathan Brake officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Ralph E. White
Ralph E. White, 71, of Clemmons died July 1 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He loved gardening, was an avid fisherman, and was known for picking up and caring for stray animals.
Surviving are his loving wife of 49 years, Elizabeth White; three children, Pamela C. Lancaster and husband Vic, Gregory White and Joseph White and wife Tamy; four grandchildren, Louis, Jenna and Elijah White, and Taylor Lancaster; and “adoptive daughters” Tammy Sue and Deborah Rose.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Beatrice Bellamy Doty
Beatrice Bellamy Doty, 75, died July 6 at The Oaks at Forsyth. She was born April 8, 1928 in Jefferson, Texas to Edgar T. and Annie Evans Bellamy. She was retired from Hanes Hosiery. She was preceded in death by her husband, Coy Jefferson Doty Sr., a sister and three brothers.
Surviving are a daughter, Robyn Doty Justice of King; two sons, Jimmy L. Doty and wife Jeanie of Salisbury and Coy J. Doty Jr. and wife Rosemary of Clemmons; five grandchldren, Misti Burton, Jason Dory, Jaret Doty, Jeff Doty, and Jan Doty-Adams;a great-granddaughter, Amanda Faith Doty; four sisters, Eva Humphrey of Waltham, Mass., Maurine Wheat of Coeur d’Allen, Idaho, Sybil Keener of Marietra, Texas, and Robin White of Elko, Nev.; four brothers, Bud Bellamy of Elko, Nev., Ray Bellamy of Raceland, La., and Earl Bellamy and Glenn Bellamy, both of Naples, Texas; and a special friend and neighbor, Gladys Johnson.
A graveside service was held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory with Rev. Jason Pierce officiating.
Elizabeth Conrad Hobson
Elizabeth Conrad Hobson, 84, of Akron, Ohio died June 28 in Akron. She was born January 4, 1919, to Eugene M. and Ruby Sprinkle Conrad in Lewisville and graduated from Lewisville High School. She moved to Akron, where she lived most of her adult life. She and her husband, John A. Hobson, were employed and retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. after many years of employment. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Frank and Clinton Conrad; a sister, Mildred Cranfill; and a half-sister, Blanche Alderman.
Surviving are a sister, Ruth C. Barney of Eugene, Ore., and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Elsie Little McGee Morgan
Elsie Little McGee Morgan, 83, died July 3 at Village Care in King. She was born June 27, 1920, in Forsyth County to John Virgil and Sarah Olive Hudson Little. She was a homemaker and member of Konnoak United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by infant twin daughters and her first husband, William T. “Buck” McGee.
Surviving are her husband, J.P. Morgan of the residence; a daughter, Ann McGee Gregory and husband Dennis; a son, John T. McGee and wife Stacy, all of Pfafftown; grandchildren Denise McGee and husband Hal of Clemmons and Lisa Alverson and husband Randy of King; a stepgrandchild, Chris Butner of Pfafftown; great-grandchildren Will McGee and Anna Alverson; and a sister, Thelma Flora of Roanoke, Va.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Randy Sherrill officiating, and burial followed at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
Francis McMordie
Francis “Mac” McMordie, 92, of Lewisville died June 30 at his son’s home in Troy. Born in Philadelphia, he was employed by Western Electric for 42 years. He was active for many years in service through West Bend Lodge No. 434 as master and as secretary and was an honorary member of Pioneer Lodge. He also was a member of the York Rite Allied Masonic Degrees, the Winston-Salem Scottish Rite, Knight Commander of Court of Honor, five times presiding officer of the Camel Shrine No. 5, past regal patron of Royal Court No. 17, O. of A. and Eastern Star Chapter No. 309. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine.
Surviving are three sons, Donald and wife Nancy of North Bend, Ore., Richard and wife Bonnie of Troy and James and wife Rebecca of Kinston; and a daughter, Gordene Singleton and husband Gregory of Delran, N.J.; nine grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; a stepgreat-great-grandchild; four brothers; and four sisters.
Funeral services were held at Lewisville Methodist Church with a graveside service following.
Charles Clinton Conrad
Charles “Connie” Clinton Conrad, prominent San Juan, Puerto Rico businessman and Tintillo Hills resident for 33 years until 1999 when he moved to Jacksonville, Fla., died June 26 at Cypress Village after a lengthy illness. He was a native of Lewisville and a U.S. veteran of World War II. He also served as director and franchisee of Arthur Murray International Academy’s of Dance in Iowa, Missouri, South Dakota and Puerto Rico for 45 years. In San Juan he was a past president of Kiwanis Club; member of board of directors Navy League; and a member of the San Juan Rotary Clun, where he served as treasurer. He was a member of First Congregational Church in Rapid City, S.D., where he served as a deacon. He served on the church council of First Union Church in Puerto Rico, where he was member for 25 years. He was also a member of the Second Union Church in Puerto Rico prior to moving to Florida, where he was a member of the Isle of Faith Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene M. Conrad and Ruby Sprinkle Conrad of Lewisville; a brother and sister, Frank Conrad and Mildred Cranfill, both of Winston-Salem; and a sister-in-law, Lucille Conrad. Another sister, Elizabeth Conrad Hobson, died June 28, 2003.
Surviving are his wife, Pat; three children, Linda Kay Morales and Tad J. “Tato” Conrad of San Juan and Cheryl Conrad of Concord, N.H.; a daughter-in-law, Denise Conrad, and a son-in-law, Kelvin Morales Espada; three grandchildren, Teresita and Jonathan Javier “J.J” Morales and Carlos Rene Conrad, all of San Juan; a sister, Ruth Barney of Eugene, Ore.; and five nieces and nephews.
Arrangements for a memorial service in San Juan are pending.
Evelyn Gill Peterson
Evelyn Gill Peterson, 87, of Winston-Salem died July 3 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born December 29, 1915, in Guilford County to Newcomb Johnson and Iola Auman Gill. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lacy Owen Peterson.
Surviving are a son, Larry Peterson and wife Nancy of Clemmons; three grandchildren, Dale Ray Peterson and wife Donna of Mooresville, Dean Todd Peterson of New Orleans, La., and Dane Eric Peterson and wife Hillary of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Bobby Gill of High Point.
A graveside service was held in Floral Garden Park in High Point with Rev. Hallie Scott officiating.
Clara Tesh Sink
Clara Tesh Sink, the wife of the late Clyde Edward Sink Jr., died June 24 at her home. She was born September 28, 1926, in Forsyth County to Charles Romulas and Eva Doub Tesh. She spent her entire life in Forsyth County and was a member of Friedberg Moravian Church. She was retired from the hosiery department of Sara Lee Corp., with 30 years of service. She was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers.
Surviving are three children, Albert Sink of Winston-Salem, Carol Overman and husband Ronnie of Liberty, and Ed Sink III and wife Pam of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico; five granddaughters; two grandsons; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Clyde Tesh and wife Dorothy of Clemmons; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Jack Tesh of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Friedberg Moravian Church with Rev. G. Thomas Shelton officiating, and burial followed in the church graveyard.
Martha Tarpley Osmann
Martha Tarpley Osmann, 94, of Winston-Salem died July 5 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born November 18, 1908, in Blue Ridge, Ga. to William A. and Alice Gray Tarpley. She had lived in Winston-Salem since 1945 and retired from Western Electric Company with 24 years of service. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, Rosemont Baptist Church and the Eastern Star Twin City Chapter. She was a charter member of the Clemmons VFW Ladies Auxiliary and was a volunteer with many years seniority at Forsyth Medical Center. She loved helping others and growing her flowers. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Vestal and Ronnie Wilson; two brothers, Herman Tarpley and Howard Tarpley; and her husband, Ed Osmann.
Surviving are daughter, Nelda Potter and husband Glenn of Kinston; a son, Conrad “Sandy” Livingston and wife Patsy of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Denise L. Bowman and husband Greg of Lewisville, Sandra Livingston and fiance Scott Carmack of Allen, Texas a great-grandson, Garrett Bowman; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Chapel with Rev. Mark Reed officiating, and burial followed in Farmington Cemetery.
John Westley Spann Sr.
John Westley Spann Sr., 58, of King died June 29 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born June 2, 1945, to Charles E. and Dovie Shore Spann in Forsyth County. He was a truck driver for 29 years, first with McLean Trucking Co. and then with Anchor Motor Freight and was a member of North Point Baptist Church. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to his friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Nancy S. Andrews.
Surviving are his wife, Delores Stewart Spann of the home; three sons, John W. Spann Jr. of Lewisville, Tommy Spann of King and David Spann of King; a brother, Charles A. Spann of Advance; and four grandchildren, Clint, Taylor, Carly and Dallas.
Funeral services were held at Macedonia Baptist Church, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Dillon Thomas Kuroda
Dillon Thomas Kuroda, infant son of Don and Amy Kuroda of Greensboro, died July 3 at Women’s Hospital.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sisters, Jessica Spinale and Natalie Kuroda of the home; his maternal grandparents, Gary and Doris Barney of Clemmons; his paternal grandfather, Kent Kuroda and wife Kay of Denver, Col.; his paternal grandmother, Betty Horner of Hemet, Calif.; and great-grandparents and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service was held at Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church with Rev. Dave Howard and Rev. Hank Thomas officiating.
