Everett Moore
Everett “Bill” Moore, 61, of Morganton died October 29 at his residence.
Surviving are his wife, Millie Moore of the home; a daughter, Gwen Moore Meyers and husband Hal of Clemmons; and two grandchildren, Josh Meyers and Haley Meyers, both of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home in Morganton.
Kay Delores Pfaff Luck
Kay Delores Pfaff Luck, 62, of Winston-Salem died October 25 at Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born February 12, 1940, in Forsyth County to D. Clyde and Ruby Wall Pfaff. In September 1959, she married Rex Wayne Luck. She attended Union United Methodist Church, where she was a lifelong member. She worked at Wachovia Bank and then became a full-time homemaker for a number of years. She was currently employed with Forsyth County at Tanglewood Park in the accounts payable department. She enjoyed traveling, reading, shopping and spending time with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband and mother.
Surviving are her father, D. Clyde Pfaff of Winston-Salem; a son, David Luck and wife Ann of Wallburg; a daughter, Angela Luck of Winston-Salem; two grandsons, Wesley and Kenneth Luck of Wallburg; and a number of friends.
Funeral services were held at Union United Methodist Church in Lewisville with Rev. Thomas Albert and Rev. Edwin Needham officiating, and burial followed in Parklawn Memorial Gardens.
Chester P. Detwiler Jr.
Chester P. Detwiler Jr., 66, formerly of Walkertown, died unexpectedly on October 19. He was born in Bellefonte, Pa. on August 30, 1936. He was a long time member of Oakhill Baptist Church and was retired from Star Paper Tube Co., formerly CLR. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane E. Detwiler.
Surviving are five daughters, Susan Diehl of Lewisville, Sandra Olive of Clemmons, Jane Pursell of Kitnersville, Pa., Debbie Knight of Millerton, Pa., and Linda Cooper of Winston-Salem; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack Detwiler of Levittown, Pa.; a niece, Shirley Flagg of Utah; a nephew, John Detwiler Jr. of Pa.; along with a devoted friend, Fredrick Couthen of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Buddy Wellington officiating, and burial followed in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown.
Sara Elizabeth East Kirby
Sara Elizabeth East Kirby, 69, of Winston-Salem, died October 29. She was born July 24, 1933, to Raymond John East and Edna Huffman East in Forsyth County. She married Harry Daniel Kirby August 17, 1957, in Winston-Salem. She was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church, and enjoyed traveling. She was retired from GMAC with more than 30 years of service.
Surviving are her husband of 35 years, Harry Daniel Kirby of the home; a sister, Lynda Lou Arrington and husband Jack of Clemmons; three nieces, Laura McKnight of Lexington, Debbie Cook of Winston-Salem and Diana Wagoner Read of Clemmons; and many great-nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park with Dr. Cecil Cave and Dr. Gus Thomas officiating.
Frances Canter Keaton
Frances Canter Keaton, 82, of Winston-Salem died October 29 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born May 2, 1920, in Forsyth County, a daughter of John and Sally Virginia Canter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete Lee Keaton, along with four brothers and three sisters.
Surviving are two sons, Carroll Keaton and wife Sue of Lewisville, and John Keaton and wife Bertie of Lexington; a daughter, Ida K. Looper and husband Don of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Bud Owen officiating, and burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons.
Edith Waters Owens
Edith Waters Owens, 90, of Purlear, widow of Herbert “Hub” Owens, died November 2 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. She was born in Wilkes County on September 19, 1912, to James L. and Emma Elledge Waters.
Surviving are seven daughters, Sandra Melaga and husband Larry of Lewisville, Peggy Dobson and husband R.H. of La Plata, Md., Sharon Gryder and husband Jimmy of Millers Creek, Inez Lovette of Charlotte, Emma Jean Windham of Newport News, Va., Vivian Greene and husband Lonnie of White Pine, Tenn., and Wilma Healey and husband John of Newport, Tenn.; five sons, Ralph Owens of Clemmons, Joe Owens of Winston-Salem, A. C. (Buck) Owens of Ferguson, Benny Owens of Millers Creek and Danny Owens of Morristown, Tenn.; three sisters, Mrs. Ray (Hessie) Church of Elkin, Mrs. Carroll Beusse of Thomasville and Mrs. Dean Thomas of Hampton, Va.; a brother, Jim Waters of Lenoir; 25 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Lewis Fork Baptist Church with Rev. Sherrill Wellborn officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Nell Faires Bason
Nell Faires Bason, 96, of Winston-Salem died October 28 at Salemtowne Moravian Home, where she had been a resident for the last seven years. She was born January 26, 1906, in Kings Mountain, to Edwin C. Faires and Dora Jane Falls. She was a member of Ardmore United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; five brothers; her husband, Samuel Ralph Bason; her daughter, Betty (Bason) Hill; and a grandson, Kenneth Hill.
Surviving are a daughter, Sara (Bason) Braswell and husband Roy of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Patricia Lynn Braswell of Clemmons, Julie (Braswell) Connell and husband Michael of Denver, N.C., and Stephen Hill and Samuel Hill, both of Winston-Salem; two great-grandchildren, Jordyn McKenzie Connell of Denver, N.C., and Justen Hill of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park with Rev. Norwood Green officiating.
Alma Cooke Vogler
Alma Cooke Vogler, 86, of Winston-Salem died October 27 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born November 24, 1915, in Westfield to Walter and Roxie Shaw Cooke. She was a member of Parkview Church of God. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clifton H. Vogler; and a sister, Capitola C. Goodman.
Surviving are three nieces, Dianne Tuttle and husband Robert of Clemmons, Rebecca Dixon and husband Patrick of Oak Island and Toni Bell and husband Michael of Winston-Salem; and a nephew, Ted F. Goodman and wife Charlotte of Stella.
A graveside service was held at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with Rev. Bobby Dishman officiating.
Thelma Ann Andrews Bauguess
Thelma Ann Andrews Bauguess, 62, of Lexington died October 28 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born February 22, 1940, in Alleghany County to Dewey Martin Andrews and Cynthia Marie Smith Andrews. She and her husband, John, owned and operated Arcadia Exxon for many years before retirement. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1981 and by a brother, Everette Wayne Andrews.
Surviving are two daughters, Becky Vires and husband Todd and Sharon Sluder, all of Clemmons; two brothers, Bain Andrews and wife Betty of North Wilkesboro and Dennis Andrews and wife Connie of Statesville; a sister, Wilma Tedder and husband Doughton of Sparta; two granddaughters, Christi Michelle Vires and Holly Michelle Sluder; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Davidson Funeral Home-Hickory Tree Chapel with Rev. Charles Tanner officiating, and burial followed at Parklawn Memorial Gardens.
Ruby Jane Felts Wood
Ruby Jane Felts Wood, 90, of Hays died October 19 at her home. She was born in Wilkes County on November 17, 1911, to J.C. and Martha Johnson Felts. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, J.C. Wood of Clemmons and Bill Wood of Chillicothe, Ohio; three daughters, Glenna Wood and Patricia Triplett, both of Hays, and Martha Bare of Millers Creek; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Bethany Baptist Church with Rev. Hillary Wood, Rev. Tommy Mathis, Rev. Yale Huie, and Rev. Ted Combs officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
William Spencer Pegram
William Spencer Pegram, 75, of Clemmons died December 8 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after a short illness. He was born March 1, 1927, in Forsyth County to Walter Curtis and Pearl Mae Larrimore Pegram. He was a member of Love’s United Methodist Church and attended Mount Tabor United Methodist Church. He was retired from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center as the associate director of environmental services. He was a 32nd-degree Mason and a member of the Salem Masonic Lodge. He was an avid bowler and a supporter of youth bowling. He was a life-time member and past director, vice president and president of the Piedmont Bowling Association, a vice president and board of directors member of the N.C. State Bowling Association, director of the Southeast Bowling Association and a Hall of Fame member of the Piedmont Bowling Association. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Vera Holcomb.
Surviving are his wife, Ellen Hutchins Pegram of the home; a daughter, Carolyn Lawson and husband Jeff of Kernersville; a stepgrandson, Reed Lawson; a brother, Leon Pegram of Cincinnati, Ohio; a sister, Bertie Cranfill and husband Richard of Reidsville; and a brother-in-law, Mickey Holcomb of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Mount Tabor United Methodist Church with Dr. Ken Carter and Rev. Lance Scarlett officiating. and burial followed in Love’s United Methodist Church Cemetery in Walkertown.
Ray Redman Mabe
Ray Redman Mabe, 80, of Winston-Salem, died December 9 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born October 8, 1922, in Surry County to William M. and Ethel Redman Mabe. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 37 years of service. He was a member of the Northwest Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Frances J. Mabe of the home; a son, David F. Mabe and wife Wanda of Lewisville; two grandsons, Andrew and Kenneth Mabe, both of Winston-Salem; and a sister, Rachel M. Jones and husband Edward of Mount Airy.
A memorial service was held at Northwest Baptist Church with Rev. Randy McKinney officiating, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Howard Hawkins
Howard Hawkins, 81, of Lewisville died December 7 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born May 9, 1921, in Davie County to the late Della H. Anthony and Hubert Ecckles. He was a retired finishing-crew manager from Carolina Marble and Tile Co. in Winston-Salem. He was a loyal and dedicated member of New Hope AME Zion Church in Lewisville, where he served on the trustee board, steward board, usher board and Man’s Booster Club. He sang with the male chorus and senior choir. He was a member of the Forsyth County Civic Club and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Thomasina R. Hawkins; two sons, the Rev. Willie Hawkins of Winston-Salem and Ronald Hawkins and wife Virgie of Lewisville; five daughters, Brenda Jackson of Winston-Salem and Tony Hawkins, Wanda Fay Porter and husband George, Constance Hawkins and Catherine Speller and husband Vance, all of Lewisville; a devoted daughter-in-law, Teressa Hawkins of Winston-Salem; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lucille Holland, Martha Lynum and husband Jerry and Olivia Paris of and husband Willie of Detroit, Mich.; his father-in-law, Willie Hill and wife Lena; two sisters-in-law, Bernice Hill and husband James and Anna Partlow; a brother-in-law, Larry Kimbrough; devoted friends, the Rev. and Mrs. Robert H. Bailey; a devoted cousin, Ola Conrad; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at New Hope AME Zion Church in Lewisville with Rev. Beverly McMillian officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Adis Dillon Ogburn
Adis Dillon Ogburn, 86, of King died December 9 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born to the late Jesse and Hattie Wood Dillon. She was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, cooking and embroidery. She was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul David Ogburn, Dec. 9, 1980; two grandchildren, Rhonda Ogburn and Al Dean Ogburn; a great-grandson, Zachary Ryan Gordon; a sister, Anise Mabe; and two brothers, Odell Dillon and Eugene Dillon.
Surviving are six children, Paul David Ogburn Jr. and wife Joe Ann of Lewisville, Shirley Ogburn Gordon and husband Frank of King, Allen C. Ogburn and wife Erma of Winston-Salem, Alvin F. Ogburn and wife Shirley of Germanton, Donald R. Ogburn and wife Becky of Kernersville and Ronald G. Ogburn and wife Betty of King; two sisters, Emma Delapp of King and Clarice Fulk of Walkertown; two brothers, John Dillon and wife Joanne and Jack Dillon and wife Marie, all of Walkertown; a sister-in-law, Jackie Dillon, of Walkertown; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and two very special friends, Thelma Gordon and Annie Mae Barnes.
Funeral services were held at Mount Olive Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Roberts and Rev. Robbie Crane officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Randy Wayne Swaim
Randy Wayne Swaim, 37, of Winston-Salem died December 8 at Lexington Memorial Hospital. He was born April 20, 1965, to Jimmie Swaim Sr. and Hazel Ledford Bryant. He loved the outdoors. He also loved his family, especially his daughter, Miranda. He was preceded in death was his father; all of his grandparents; and an aunt, Betty Fulp.
Surviving are his mother, Hazel Swaim Bryant and husband Chuck of Clemmons; a daughter, Miranda Swaim, and her mother, Ronda; a brother, Jimmie Swaim Jr. and wife Tanya, of Winston-Salem; three nephews, Lee, Robbie and Chris and their families; and three stepsisters and a stepbrother, Beverly, Daniel, Sherry, Angela, and their families.
Funeral services were held at at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Randall Lenderman and Rev. Dalton King officiating, and burial followed at Victory Baptist Church Cemetery.
Brantley Claymont Kates
Brantley Claymont Kates, 83, of Winston-Salem died December 6 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born July 25, 1919, in Forsyth County to James and Ota Mickey Kates. He was a member of Ardmore United Methodist Church. He was very active in all types of sports both during and after high school. For many years he worked for Pleasants Hardware and retired from National Old Line Insurance Co.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Lewis Kates of the home; two sons, Stephen Wayne Kates and wife Nancy of Clemmons and Michael Clay Kates and wife Teresa of Walnut Cove; three grandchildren, Michael Austin Kates of Walnut Cove, Cynthia Elisa Kates of New Jersey and Charlotte Kates Smith and husband Tyndall of Castle Hayne.
A graveside service was held at Salem Cemetery with Rev. Lisa Wishon officiating.
Lanier Gray Woosley Jr.
Lanier Gray Woosley Jr., 58, of Pfafftown died unexpectedly December 9 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born November 5, 1944, he was the son of the late Lanier Gray and Mary Hauser Woosley Sr.. He was a member of Olivet Moravian Church. He played cornet in the church band and had played in 51 consecutive Easter Sunrise Services. He was also employed by Estes Express Lines for more than 15 years.
Surviving are his wife of 17 years, Betty Poole Woosley of the home; two sons, Jeff Woosley and wife Tina of Clemmons and Bryan Woosley of Athens, Ga.; three stepchildren, Tammy Campbell and husband Steve of Pinnacle, Greg Norman of King and Tracy Culler of Walnut Cove; three stepgrandchildren, Tyler, Amy and Jacob Campbell; and two sisters, Kathleen Hackett and husband Leroy of Winston-Salem and also Suanne Smith and husband Charlie of Fries, Va.
Funeral services were held at Olivet Moravian Church with Rev. Douglas C. Rights officiating, and burial followed at Pfafftown Christian Church Cemetery.
Delma Eugene Lee
Delma Eugene Lee, 80, of Graham died December 10 at Duke University Medical Center after several years of declining health and two weeks’ critical health. A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Verna Perry Lee, and the son of Samuel W. Lee and Mattie Longest Lee, both deceased. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. He was the owner of Delma Lee Heating and Air Conditioning. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Craig Lee; a sister, Norma Andrews; three brothers, Jack Lee, Walter Lee and Thomas Lee; and a stepmother, Maude Lee Anthony.
Surviving are two sons, Ronnie E. Lee Sr. and wife Ellen of Lewisville, and Steven K. Lee and wife Amy of Morrisville; a daughter, Linda L. Councilman of Graham; a brother, Garland “Billy” Lee of Burlington; a half-sister, Carolyn Bader of Graham; a half brother, Donald Lee of Graham; and eight grandchildren, Dennis Councilman, Ronnie E. Lee Jr., Cayce E. Lee, Samuel D. Lee, Dennis C. Lee, Amy E. Lee, Julie D. Lee and Rachel D. Lee.
Robert Harrison Thompson Sr.
Robert Harrison Thompson Sr., 68, of Winston-Salem died December 10 at Forsyth Medical Center because of declining health. He was born March 17, 1934, in Surry County to the late Eli Patterson and Viola Cook Thompson. He was of the Baptist faith and was retired from Thomasville Furniture Co., Plant H, after 30 years of service. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trips to the mountains. He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Nancy Creasman Thompson of Kernersville; four sons, Robert Thompson Jr. and wife Susan of Lewisville, Eddie Thompson and wife Cindy of Walnut Cove, Patrick Thompson and wife Kathy of Kernersville, and David Thompson, also of Kernersville; a daughter, Sue Ann King and husband Timmy of Rural Hall; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer, Buffy, Jimmy, Hona, Tiffany, Allen, April, Alicia, Terry, Christopher and Tracy; two great-grandchildren, Devin and Matthew; a brother, Boyd Thompson of Dobson; and five sisters, Mable Wilmouth, Julie McCan and Laura McCan, all of Thurman, Hettie Lambert of Yadkinville, and Betty Walker and husband Edward of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, and burial followed at Crestview Memorial Park.
Henry Grady Dull
Henry Grady Dull, 75, a lifelong resident of Lewisville, died April 22 at Forsyth Medical Center after fighting a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born October 10, 1927, in Forsyth County, to Henry Jacob and Mary Lillian Wagoner Dull. He was a member of Lewisville United Methodist Church, the West Bend Masonic Lodge No. 434, Lewisville Civic Club and a charter member of the Lewisville Historical Society. He was a member of the Lewisville Town Council for eight years and was a retired insurance salesman. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.
Surviving are his wife, Reba Stimpson Dull of the home; two children, Gary M. Dull and Karen Dull Baiada; and three grandchildren, Thomas Baiada, Daniel Baiada and Emma Ann Dull, all of Lewisville.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel, with Rev. Don Routh and Rev. Tom Albert officiating, and burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons.
