Hannah Shailyn Minor passed away Feb. 16, 2001. She was the infant daughter of Donald Lee Minor and Mary Louise Harmon. Other survivors include sister Alesha Adonna Minor, brother Donald Lee Minor II, grandparents Pricilla Johnson of Winston-Salem and Vaughn and Jean Harmon of Erwin, Tenn., uncles Charles, Robert, Anthony and Julius Minor of Winston-Salem and Charles Bristo Jr. of New York, aunts Debra Harmon and Jennifer Porter of Erwin, Tenn., and other family members including aunts and cousins. Mrs. Mary Ellen Moser, 68, of Forsyth Line Road, Rural Hall, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001. She was born Sept. 20, 1932, in Forsyth County. She was preceded in death by her adoptive parents, Hobart and Lula Mae Kiger. Surviving are her husband, James Lester Moser, of the home; one daughter, Robin (Charles) Gwyn of Rural Hall; three sons, James Edwin Moser of the home, Timothy Wayne (Sonya) Moser and Paul Eugene Moser, both of Rural Hall; two grandchildren, Melissa Marie and Michael Lee Gwyn; two stepgrandchildren, Gabriel and Joshua Jolly; one sister, Bobbi Jean Hutchins of Winston-Salem; and special friends Sharon and Jerry, Renee, Clinton and Marie Redmon and Dawn Pulliam. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Slate Funeral Home in King with the Rev. Larry Martin and the Rev. Jesse Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the Closer Walk Baptist Church cemetery. OLIVER
JONESVILLE - Mrs. Collie Esther Childress Oliver, 78, of Center Road passed away Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. She was born May 29, 1922, in Surry County to the late Joe and Ida Stanley Childress. Mrs. Oliver was a homemaker and a member of Fall Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Monroe Oliver, on May 19, 1997, by a sister, Vallie Reece, and by brothers Clyde Childress, Thurmond Childress and Bruce Childress. Surviving are four children, Carolyn Oliver of Elkin, Genell O. (Larry) Cook, Jo Ann O. (Danny) Hutchens, all of Jonesville and Dr. Keith M. (Yvonne) Oliver of Sparta; six grandchildren, Meghan, Nelson and Logan Oliver, Amy (Michael) Vestal, Lori (Mark) Henderson and Justin (Rogina) Hutchens; five great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; three sisters, Callie Brannon and Agnes (Warner) Ham of Yadkinville and Nellie (W.A.) Smith of Winston-Salem; one brother, Conard Childress of Jonesville; and several nieces and nephews. Her funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Fall Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Hudson, the Rev. Lynwood Campbell and Dr. Leon Mikles. She will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. PLOWMAN
EAST BEND - Mr. Alonzo Lee Plowman, 97, of East Bend passed away Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem after an extended illness. Mr. Plowman was born March 14, 1903, in Yadkin County to the late Lee and Cora Allgood Plowman. He worked as a farmer all his life. Mr. Plowman was preceded in death by son Donald Plowman and two infant children. He is survived by his wife of 78 years, Viola Lakey Plowman; four sons, Alonzo "Junior" Plowman of Old Town, Jack (Kathryn) Plowman of Winston-Salem, James "Buddy" Plowman of Winston-Salem and Thurmon (Mary) Plowman of East Bend; five daughters, Evalee Matthews of Winter Springs, Fla., Cuba Ann Wilson of Winston-Salem, Cora Sue (Bobby) Pope of Chester, Va., Jamie (William) Slater of East Bend and Mable Styers of Yadkinville. Also surviving are 42 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren and 27 great-great-grandchildren. Services for Mr. Plowman will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mark Elmore officiating. Burial will follow in the Enon Baptist Church cemetery. POSEY
PINNACLE - Mr. Ernest Larry Posey, 54, of Pinnacle, lost his long battle with kidney disease Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Posey was born in Surry County on March 31, 1946, to Mintoria Bowman Posey and the late Ernest Woodrow Posey. He proudly served our country in Vietnam. Survivors include his mother Mrs. Mintoria Bowman Posey of Pinnacle; one son, Larry Allen Posey of Danbury; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Barbara Posey and Eddie Shelton of Pinnacle and Mattie Posey Payne of Pilot Mountain; one special brother-in-law, Jack Douglas Payne of Pilot Mountain; and several nieces and nephews. A private graveside service will be conducted with no formal visitation. The family appreciates the kindness, but requests that flowers and food be omitted. PRESTIPINO
Mr. Carmelo Prestipino, 60, of 6120 Tobaccoville Road, Tobaccoville, died Saturday afternoon at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Sicily, Italy, on March 15, 1940, to Carlo and Angelina Prestipino. He came to the United States when he was 15 years old. Mr. Prestipino attended Good Shepherd Catholic Church in King. He formerly owned and operated Prestipino's Pizza in Loehmann's Plaza and was in the process of opening Tony's Pizza in Morganton. He was a hard-working man who dearly loved his wife, sons and grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his father in 1946, his brother Antonino and an infant sister. Surviving are his wife Joan Pallett Prestipino of the home; three sons, Carmelo Prestipino and Mark Prestipino of North Wilkesboro and Anthony Prestipino of the home; seven grandchildren, Casey, Jamie, Jacob, Steven, Michael, Rene and Patrick; his mother of Daytona Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Lucy and Pam; and one brother, Dominic Prestipino. A funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in King with Father Larry Hunt as officiant. Interment will be in Forsyth Memorial Park. PRICE
MAYODAN - Mr. James "Norfleet" Price, 89, of 2366 Park Road, Mayodan, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Morehead Hospital in Eden. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Clearview Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Hall Family cemetery. Mr. Price was born in Stokes County. He was a retired farmer, was affiliated with the Sharpe-Smith Warehouse and New Madison Warehouse and worked with the ASCS Department in Reidsville. He was a member of Mount Hermon United Methodist Church and attended Clearview Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who always put his family above everything. Mr. Price was preceded in death by his parents Chase and Eva Mae Gunter Price and sister, Sayre Lazar. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Ruth Hall Price, of the home, sons Pete Price and wife Linda of Burlington and Jim Price and wife Debra of Mayodan, daughter Mary P. Cole and husband Page of Roxboro, brothers C.D. Price and Patrick Price of Madison, sisters India Satterfield of Madison and Hazel Gann of Mayodan, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, at Colonial Funeral Home and all other times at the residence. WEST JEFFERSON - Alta Borresen Shepherd, 86, died Saturday afternoon at the Segraves Care Center in Jefferson. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at the Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church in Jefferson with the Rev. Jeff Vogler officiating. Interment will follow in the Transou United Methodist Church cemetery in Laurel Springs. Mrs. Shepherd was the widow of Walter Shepherd and is survived by two sons, Conley Shepherd of West Jefferson and Clifford Shepherd of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Alice Lee Shepherd Poe of Jefferson and Donna Shepherd Cameron of Huntersville; one sister, Mary Winters of St. Anthony, Idaho. Eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren also survive. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Boone Family Funeral Home in West Jefferson. MADISON - Mrs. Carolyn Hall Sheppard, 64, of 7553 NC 704 died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Wesley Long Hospital. The funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Mount Hermon United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Mrs. Sheppard was born in Stokes County and was a housewife. She was a member of Mount Hermon United Methodist Church, was Registrar of Precinct 2 in Madison and served on the Rockingham County Board of Elections. She was preceded in death by her daughter Melia C. Sheppard and her parents William and Bernice Lawson Hall. Survivors include her husband, John Neal Sheppard, of the home, son Danny Sheppard and fiancée Cindy Wall of Mayodan, grandson Wayne Sheppard of the home, sister Bobbie Adkins and husband Dean of Madison, special niece Shea Adkins and special nephew Brent Adkins and wife Angela. CHESAPEAKE, Va. - David W. Bazemore, 89, of 617 Crossland Drive, died Feb. 24, 2001, in Chesapeake. A native of Cofield and a former longtime resident of Winston-Salem, he was retired after 20 years as a supervisor with Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drydock Corp. and was a member of Great Bridge Baptist Church. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Mary T. Bazemore; two daughters, Sally Lewis and her husband, Bobby, of Winston-Salem, and Patricia Hewitt and her husband, James, of Chesapeake; and 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, John David Bazemore. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Charles Moseley officiating. TRAPHILL - Mrs. Ruth Johnson Brooks, 80, of Round Hill Church Road, Traphill, widow of James Ezra Brooks, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Round Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Gilreath officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Brooks was born in Wilkes County, April 8, 1920, to Robert and Viola Nickelson Johnson. She was a member of Round Hill Baptist Church. Mrs. Brooks is survived by three daughters, Alice Brooks, Mrs. Allen (Samantha) Wood and Mrs. Darrell (Susan) Sparks, all of Traphill; one son, Charles Brooks of Traphill; three sisters, Ruby Hatch of Graham, Maude Kennedy of Traphill and Janie Butler of Lenoir; two brothers, Robert Johnson of Taylorsville and Earl Johnson of Winston-Salem; one granddaughter, Amy Sparks; and one stepgrandson, Joey Brown. Mrs. Billie Stinson Flynn, 75, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. She was born Oct. 12, 1925, in Forsyth County to Lonnie Cephas and Rosa Alice Fleming Stinson. She was a member of Westview Baptist Church. Surviving are one daughter, Merrie Beth Burnett and husband Steve of Raleigh; four sisters, Margaret S. Tocce and Delilah Stinson of Winston-Salem, Ruth Stinson of Washington, D.C., and Una S. Grubbs of Saint Joseph, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Carlton T. Mitchell officiating. CLEARWATER, Fla. - Mr. William H. "Bill" Goodman, 85, of Clearwater, Fla., died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, in Palm Harbor, Fla. He was born June 27, 1915, in Ashe County to the late Lee and Beulah Holeman Goodman. He moved to Florida from Mount Airy in 1983 and retired after 30 years with the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C., where as assistant secretary of communications he chaired an interagency committee to rewrite national policy on communications security and was a member of the U.S. delegation to SALT IV in Vienna. He was the co-author of several technical and operational manuals. He was an Army veteran of World War II and graduated from Appalachian State University in 1938. He was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church of Annandale, Va., and attended Harborside Christian Church of Safety Harbor, Fla. Survivors include his wife, Elsie S. Goodman, of Clearwater; two daughters, Janice (Bunny) Vaughn of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and Barbara Koch of Santa Maria, Calif.; one son, William "Bill" Goodman of Westfield; one sister, Mary Jo Hoosier of Todd; one brother, Lowell Goodman of Memphis, Tenn.; and two grandsons. Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. Monday, Feb. 26, at Howell Funeral Chapel of Pilot Mountain, conducted by the Rev. Ricky Rogers. Interment will follow at Brown Mountain Baptist Church cemetery, Westfield, with military honors by VFW Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. HARPER
Mr. Bobby Harper, 67, of 3005 Rochester St. passed away Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at the Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born June 18, 1933, to Floyd J. Harper and Louise Harper. He was a native of Winston-Salem, graduating from Atkins High School, class of 1951. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a former member of the U.S. Post #220. He was a previous employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System after 30 years of service. Mr. Harper also owned and operated Harper's Confectionary Store on the corner of 18th Street and Cleveland Avenue for more than 15 years. Mr. Harper was a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church. He is survived by his devoted wife of 24 years, Eva Little Harper; stepmother Mary M. Harper of Winston-Salem; two sons, Bobby Ray Harper Jr. of Omaha, Neb., and Willis Hurbert Marshall of Frankfurt, Germany; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Margie Macon, Junnell Lyons, Floydette Rector (Phillip) of Winston-Salem and Margaret Chapman of Laurelton, N.Y.; one aunt, Eva Mae Barrett of Winston-Salem; two brothers-in-law, Bryant Little of Winston-Salem and Charles (Elmira) Little of New York, N.Y.; 16 nieces and nephews; and devoted friend Jimmy Paulings. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, at the Mount Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Serenus T. Churn Sr. officiating. Mrs. Sara Robertson Helton, 62, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Oct. 3, 1938, in Surry County to Gurney and Alma Taylor Robertson. She was a member of Winston-Salem Friends Meeting and an active member of the choir. She was a member of the ADK Sorority (Alpha Delta Kappa). Surviving are her loving husband of 41 years, C. Jerry Helton of the home; two daughters, Ms. Sharon Helton Cooper and Miss Lisa Ann Helton of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Christina N. Cooper and Matthew A. Cooper of Winston-Salem; one sister, Mrs. Bertie R. Cooper and husband Charlie of Greenville, S.C.; two brothers, Charles G. Robertson of Mt. Airy and Thomas Robertson and wife Nancy of Pilot Mountain; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Winston-Salem Friends Meeting with Judith Dancy and Willie Frye officiating. CLEMMONS - Mrs. Clessie Hiatt Hodges, 89, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Jan. 22, 1912, to Ausby and Missie Martin Hiatt in Carroll County, Va. She was a member of Home Moravian Church. She retired from R.J. Reynolds after 50 years of service. Mrs. Hodges was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Leon Hodges. She was a very loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Mozelle Hodges Campbell and husband Jim; five grandchildren, Candy Poindexter (Gary), Randy Hoffman (Cathy), Jamie Campbell (Teresa), Adele Bowman (Mark) and Sherri Bodenheimer (Errick); eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a very devoted friend, Mattie Spainhour. Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel by the Rev. Scott Venable and the Rev. Jon Peterson. Burial will follow in the Moravian Graveyard in Winston-Salem.
