Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Sherrer

Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Sherrer, 79, of Marion, went to be with the Lord Thursday, February 24, 2005, while at The McDowell Hospital. Born September 4, 1925, in McDowell County, she was a daughter of the late John McDaniel and Myrtle Speagle. Mrs. Sherrer retired from Delta Airlines after 26 years of service as an accountant. She was a member of the Daughters of the Revolution.

A loving Mother, she is survived by a son, David Allen Sherrer, of Atlanta, GA; A daughter, Margaret Sherrer Saunders, of Leesburg, VA; Two grandchildren, Jimi & Dylan Saunders, both of Leesburg, VA;

Funeral Services for Mrs. Sherrer will be held 11:00AM, Saturday, February 26, 2005, in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion. Interment will follow at the Sardis Lutheran Church Cemetery, Hickory, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the McDowell County Meals on Wheels, c/o The McDowell Senior Center, 100 Spaulding Road, Marion, NC 28752.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Mr. Joe Alexander Harbison

Mr. Joe Alexander Harbison, 67, of Spring Lake Drive, Morganton died Thursday, February 27, 2003 at his residence. Born October 28, 1935 in Burke County he was the son of the late Alexander and Junie York Harbison. Four brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

Mr. Harbison was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Morganton and had retired from Great Lake Carbon after thirty-four of service. He had been a volunteer at Liberty Middle School and was an active Boy Scout Leader for fifteen years with Troop # 189. He was an avid outdoorsmen who loved to hunt and fish.

He is survived by: his wife Kay Lovingood Harbison of the home; sons Alex Harbison and wife Jeanne of Asheville, Danny Harbison and wife Lisa of Marion; daughters Pegge Harbison Hubert and husband Fred of Hendersonville, Leigh Harbison Purnell and husband Justin of Arden; sister Minnie Harbison Patton and husband Bob of Morganton; brother-in-law Phillip Lovingood of Hendersonville; grandchildren Tim Hemphill, Arika Harbison, Alexis Hubert, Kayleigh, Hubert and Eliza Purnell.

Funeral Service will be 3:00 PM Sunday, March2, 2003 at the First United Methodist with the Reverend Carl Linquist officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 2 till 3 PM Sunday in the Gathering Area of First United Methodist Church.

Memorials in Mr. Harbison ‘s memory may be made to the Scholarship Fund for Alexander and Junie Harbison c/o North Morganton United Methodist Church, 990 Sandford Drive, Morganton NC 28655.

Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton is assisting the family with arrangements.

Kenneth “Tiny” Lawrence Waldrup

Kenneth “Tiny” Lawrence Waldrup, 60, of Marion, died, Monday, March 1, 2004, at his residence.

Born in Buncombe Co. to the late Bruce Waldrup and Dorothy Mae Creason Waldrup, he was an avid camper. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Jerry Waldrup.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Randolph Waldrup, of the home; one son-in-law, Danny Ray Waldroup; two daughters, Teresa Rene’ Waldroup of Marion and Rebecca Charlene Metcalf and husband Wayne of Fairview, NC; two brothers, Dean Waldrup and Roy Dale Waldrup both of Buncombe Co.; three sisters, Belinda Clontz, Selena Cogdill and Sandi Hall all of Haywood Co.; three grandchildren, Kenneth Ryan Waldrup, Hannah Paige Metcalf and Patrick Sol Waldrup.

A Memorial Service will be held from 7pm until 8pm, Thursday, March 4, 2004, at the Candler House of Prayer, with Reverend Chuck Waldrup officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Mrs. Clara Lee Smith Abernathy

Mrs. Clara Lee Smith Abernathy, 65, of Connelly Springs, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at Valdese General Hospital. Born July 21, 1939, in Burke County, She was the daughter of the late Ray Arnold Smith and Pearl Lucille Freeman Smith. Mrs. Abernathy was a longtime member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend; she will be greatly missed.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Abernathy was also preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Gary Abernathy of the home, two sons, Alan Abernathy and his wife Judy, and Russ Abernathy and his wife Cindy, both of Connelly Springs; a daughter, Sandy Spann and her husband Roger of Connelly Springs; seven grandchildren, Nickisha Burns, Billy Abernathy, Danny Spann, Sarah Spann, Steven Abernathy, Kyle Abernathy and Dustin Abernathy; four great grandchildren, Brooke Nichols, Nathan Nichols, Dillon Nichols and Zoe Abernathy; a step father, Ted Duncan of Drexel; a sister-in-law Barbara Large of Valdese; and special friends, Mike and Reba Fulbright of Connelly Springs. Also surviving are numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Abernathy will be held 2:00 P.M. on Friday, January 21, 2005, at Shady Grove United Methodist Church with the Reverend Bobby Hallyburton officiating. Interment will follow at Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the services at the Church.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Walter Lee Suttles

Walter Lee Suttles, age 80, of 194 Mountain View Rd., Marion, died Monday, July 28, 2003 in the V.A. Medical Center, Asheville, N.C.

Born in Yancey County to the late Frank and Lillie Goode Suttles he was a self-employed contractor and a member of Liberty Freewill Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the US Army of WWII. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Lonnie Suttles and Oscar Suttles and three sisters, Fannie Burnette, Bessie Shuford and Elsie Suttles.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Fox Suttles; two sons, Gary Suttles and wife, Judy of Marion: Keith Suttles and wife, Sherry of Morganton; one daughter, Robin Suttles of Hendersonville; three brothers, James Suttles of Marion, Barney Suttles and Lennie Suttles both of Newport, TN.; two sisters, Margaret Hensley of Salisbury, and Faye Jackson of Marion, four grandchildren, Jill Suttles, Matthew Duncan, Kory Suttles and Collin Suttles.

Services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at Liberty Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Harold Webb officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 10:00 – 11:00 AM prior to the service at the church.

Memorials may be made to: American Cancer Society – 120 Executive Park Building #1 – Asheville, N.C. 28801 or Liberty Freewill Baptist Church Building Fund – 4089 US Hwy 70 W – Marion, N.C. 28752.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Mr. Kenneth “Sam” Allen Ingle

Mr. Kenneth “Sam” Allen Ingle, 70, of East Union Street, Morganton died Saturday, April 24, 2004 at Britthaven Nursing of Morganton. Born April 16, 1934 in Burke County he was the son of the late Allen Alexander Ingle and Lela Keever Ingle. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by; two brothers Clarence Ingle and Paul A. Ingle Sr.; sister Vurmell I. Wall and a nephew Terry Ingle.

Mr. Ingle had worked for Quaker Meadows Golf Course and Mallonne Surveying. He was an avid sports fan.

He is survived by: sister Doris Ingle Butler and husband Henry of Morganton; brother –in-law William T. Wall of Morganton; sister –in-law Nina Ingle; a special friend Tammy Reed and a number of nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at Forest Hill Cemetery with the Reverend Jim Tabor officiating.

The family will receive friends 7 till 8:30 Monday, at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton.

Bessie Honeycutt Burleson

Bessie Honeycutt Burleson, age 83, of Marion, NC died Saturday, February 26, 2005 in Mountain Area Hospice of Asheville.

Born in Yancey County to the late Ruben and Ida Winters Honeycutt, she was a homemaker and a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church. She was the wife of the late Olga Burleson.

Surviving Mrs. Burleson are two sons, Burnette Burleson and wife, Judy of Nebo, NC and Harold Burleson and wife, Linda of Marion, NC; four daughters, Brenda Sills and husband, Silas and Juanita Atwood and husband, Johnny both of Marion, NC, Lillian Forbes and husband, Frank of Spruce Pine, NC, Linda Edwards and husband, Roger of Greensboro, NC; one sister, Bea Elliott of Spruce Pine, NC; 22 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren. We wish to express special appreciation to Sylvia Loftis for the love and care she gave to our mother.

Services for Mrs. Burleson will be held 2:00 o’clock Monday, February 28, 2005 at Woodlawn Baptist Church. Revs. Junior Bailey and Daniel McMahan will officiate with burial following in McDowell Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5:00 – 7:30 at Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion, where Mrs. Burleson will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service at the church. At all other times, the family will be at the home of Brenda and Silas Sills – 96 Burma Rd. W – Marion, NC 28752.

Memorials may be made to: Hospice of McDowell County – 218 Logan Street – Marion, NC 28752.

Mrs. Kathryn Burgin Elliott

Mrs. Kathryn Burgin Elliott, 79, of Claremont, died Friday, April 23, 2004, at the Frye Regional Medical Center, Hickory. Born December 9, 1924, in McDowell County, she was a daughter of the late John Maddison Burgin and Annie Kathryn Roland Burgin. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Olivia Simmons and two brothers, Merrit & Gudger Burgin. Mrs. Elliott was a member of the Clover Baptist Church, Granite Falls, and a former beautician. She enjoyed oil painting.

She is survived by two daughters, Teresa James, of Claremont, and Holly Webb, of Granite Falls; A brother, Ben Burgin, of Beckley, WV; two grandchildren, Shaun A. Bolick and Jessica K. Webb; also surviving are several nieces and nephews and her former husband, Hal M. Elliott, of Marion.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Elliott will be held 3:00PM, Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion, with the Reverand Bill Hamby officiating. Interment will follow at the McDowell Memorial Park, Marion.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Bobby James Creasman

Bobby James Creasman, age 70, of Marion died Monday, February 28, 2005 at McDowell Hospital.

Born in Buncombe County to the late Eugene Creasman and Julia Burnette Creasman, he retired from Janesville Products having worked in maintainance. Mr. Creasman was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed farming through which he helped many friends and family members. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Cordell Creasman; and his brother, Gene Creasman.

Surviving are one son, Tim Creasman and his wife, Penny of Burnsville, NC; two daughters, Karen Stevens and Kathy Hughes both of Marion; three grandchildren, Brian Hughes, Melissa Hughes and Brittany Creasman; and one sister-in-law and her family, Dot Creasman of Oteen, NC.

Services for Mr. Creasman will be held 2:00 o’clock Thursday, March 3, 2005 in McCall Memorial Chapel at Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion with the Rev. Kenneth Forbes of Burnsville officiating. Burial will follow at McDowell Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to: American Cancer Society – 120 Executive Park Bldg. 1 – Asheville, NC 28801.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Mr. Kelly Rector “Tracy” Bollinger, III

Mr. Kelly Rector “Tracy” Bollinger, III, 43, of Hwy. 226 S, Marion, NC died Monday, July 28, 2003 at McDowell Hospital.

Born April 1, 1960 in Burke County, he was preceded in death by his father, Kelly R. Bollinger, Jr; and his sister, Janet Eleanor Bollinger Houston.

He was employed with East Coast Surveyors in Charlotte.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Smith Bollinger; his son, Lawrence Jay Bollinger both of the home; his mother, Jean Rogers Moore and step-father, Hal Moore of Lenoir; brothers, Mike Bollinger of Morganton and Douglas Bollinger of Dobson, NC and four nephews.

Funeral services will be 3:00 PM, Thursday, July 31, 2003 at Kirksey Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Steve Durham presiding. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice of McDowell County, 116 N. Logan Street, Marion, NC 28752.

Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton is assisting the Bollinger family with arrangements.
