Charles Tony Martin
Charles Tony Martin, 41, of Advance, died October 20 at his residence. Born August 14, 1963, in Forsyth County, he was the son of Charles Kenneth and Mona Mayes Martin. He was a licensed plumber and attended Fellowship Baptist Church.
Surviving are his parents; his wife, Laura Smith Martin; a son, Michael Martin of the home; two stepsons, Trevor Smith of Wilmington and Austin Smith of Clemmons; a daughter, Natalie Martin of the home; two stepdaughters, Anna Smith of Montana and Natalie Smith of Clemmons; a brother, Charles Marty Martin and Donna Hooker and husband Mike, all of Advance; his grandmother, Dorothy Johnson of Kernersville; and a niece, Melissa Cox of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Fellowship Baptist Church with Rev. Wayne Swisher officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Thomas Carl Campbell
Thomas Carl “Bud” Campbell, 76, of Kernersville died October 21 at his residence. He was born January 7, 1928, to Fred Roy and Lydia Burnette Campbell. After a brief venture into professional baseball, he worked for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and Lance Inc., and retired from E.G. Forrest Co. after 20 years of service as national sales manager. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and the Kernersville Masonic Lodge 669 AF&AM and Winston-Salem Scottish Rite bodies.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Curtis Whicker Campbell; two sons, Thomas C. “Tom” Campbell Jr. and wife Donese of Farmington and Bryan W. Campbell and wife Debby of Lawrenceville, GA; grandchildren Nancy Campbell Stonehouse and husband Chris of Clemmons, Thomas Coley Campbell and wife Jamie of Lake Wylie, SC, Sarah Elizabeth and Leah Michelle Campbell of Lawrenceville, GA; great-grandchildren Lydia and Kemp Stonehouse of Clemmons; a sister, Elizabeth Campbell Lewis and husband David of Winston-Salem; his mother-in-law, Wilhelmina “Bunt” Whicker, of Kernersville; two nieces, Lynn Lane and husband Pat of Winston-Salem and Leigh Underwood and husband Richard of Kernersville; and a sister-in-law, Judy Osborne and husband Ronald of Kernersville.
Funeral services were held at Main Street United Methodist Church with Dr. Alexander Ward, Rev. Dale Hilton and Rev. David Kelly officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Joseph Terry Young
Joseph Terry Young, 55, of Lewisville died October 24 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born October 31, 1948, in Harnett County to Joseph B. and Addie Turlington Young. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietname War. He was employed for 32 years with Sara Lee Hosiery, currently working as the manager of Production Planning and Scheduling for Sara Lee in Winston-Salem. He was a former plant manager of Aleo Distribution Center in Rockingham and was a trustee of Richmond Community College. He was an avid Carolina fan and loved gardening and vacationing at the beach.
Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Rebecca Parker Young of the home; a son, Patrick Young and wife Anna Norwood Young of Charlotte; a daughter, Amanda Young Wise and husband Tad of Advance; grandchildren Crayton and Kennedy Wise; his mother, Addie Turlington Young of Dunn; and many special family members and friends.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Phillip Spears officiating. A graveside service was held at Greenwood Cemetery in Dunn with Dr. Len Keever officiating.
EmmaLee Myers Allgood
EmmaLee Myers Allgood, 78, of Clemmons died February 11 at her home. She was born March 10, 1926, in Forsyth County, a daughter of Charlie Roy Myers and Thelma Blackburn Myers. She was a homemaker and a member of Union Hill Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Darlene Allgood Wooten, in 2002.
Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Lewis Ray Allgood of the home; a daughter, Betty Payne and husband Bob of Greensboro; son-in-law Danny Wooten of Clemmons; a brother, Raeford Myers of Clemmons; a sister, Lucille Potts of Advance; grandchildren Stephen Payne and wife Larissa, Jonathan Wooten and wife Kendra, Dorian Fredrickson and husband Troy, and Alan Wooten; and great-grandchildren Jacey Wooten and Ryan Fredrickson.
A graveside service was held at Union Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Howard Wagnor officiating.
Jean Hamrick Weir
Jean Hamrick Weir, 71, of Lewisville died February 10 at her home. She was born April 6, 1933, in Scranton, Pa., to Robert Philip and Elizabeth Tavis Jensen. She was a member of Home Moravian Church. She was director of Volunteer Services at Forsyth Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 1990. She always enjoyed the great outdoors at her mountain home. She was preceded in death by two sons, Walter R. Weir III, in 2004, and Robert Philip Weir, in 2001.
Surviving are her husband, Walter R. “Buddy” Weir Jr. of the home; two daughters, Elizabeth W. Hall and husband Nelson of Monroe, and Barbara Weir of Ocala, Fla; six grandchildren, Ryan Weir, Philip Weir, Annie Weir, Buddy Hall, Benjamin Weir and Lynne Hall; a sister, Lynne Thorbjornsen of Oslo, Norway; a brother, Joseph D. Hamrick of Mississippi; and an uncle, Robert Tavis and wife Kathy of Lewisville, Texas.
Funeral services were held at Home Moravian Church with Dr. Gerald Harris and Rev. Scott Venable officiating. Burial followed in the Salem Moravian Graveyard.

Mary Watson Harper Sheets
Mary Watson Harper Sheets, 91, of Lewisville died February 7 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born March 5, 1913, in Latta, S.C. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She loved her Lord and enjoyed sharing Him with others. In addition to her parents and siblings, she was preceded in death by husbands, Bill Rights, Eugene Harper and George Sheets; and a stepson, Bruce Harper.
Surviving are a son, Ted A. Harper and wife Patty of Lewisville; a stepson, Perry Harper and wife Shirley of Brevard; a stepdaughter, Lois Harper Conrad and husband Robert of East Bend; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Harper of Lewisville; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. John Conrad officiating. Burial followed in Boyer’s Chapel Church of Christ Cemetery.
Shirley Kallam Wood
Shirley Kallam Wood, 65, of Madison died February 9 at Moses Cone Hospice Unit. A lifelong resident of Rockingham County, she was born on January 10, 1940, to Henry Kallam and Pearl Coleman Kallam. She was a member of Kallam Grove Christian Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Junior Kallam.
Surviving are her sons, Duke Boileau and Ray Boileau, both of Thomasville, Bruce Boileau of Lexington and Aaron Wood of Clemmons; special friend, Saundra K. Priddy; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
A graveside service was held at Kallam Grove Christian Church Cemetery with Rev. Billy Nelson officiating.
Louise Ervin Yates
Louise Ervin Yates, 83, of Clemmons died February 10 at Clemmons Village I. She was born September 25, 1921, to John M. and Hessie Caudle Ervin. She was a past national president of La Sertoma International and a former model and fashion coordinator for Anchor Co. She retired from Wake Forest University in 1995, where she had been secretary to the director of personnel and office administrator over the Physical Plant. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas R. Yates, former state secretary for Travelers Protective Association 1945-1975; a son, Ted Yates; and a brother, Bill Ervin.
Surviving are a son, Thomas E. Yates of Winston-Salem; a granddaughter, Porsche Lahey of King; two great-granddaughters, Darian and Lexi; a sister, Kate Largen and husband J.E. of Winston-Salem; two daughters she never had, Suzie Rominger and Judy Hine; and a special friend, Jerri Christian.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. David Hughes officiating. Burial followed in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
Callie Burcham Dooley
Callie Burcham Dooley, 98, of Pfafftown died February 12 at Vienna Village. She was born April 7, 1906, in Carroll County, Va., to Rosco C. and Etta Smith Burcham. She was a former member of Waughtown Baptist Church and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Dooley; and 10 brothers and sisters.
Surviving are a daughter, Leona D. Chatham of Pfafftown; a son, James Leonard Dooley and wife Katherine of Arcadia; four grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two brothers, Craig E. Burcham of Winston-Salem and Walter Burcham of Surprise, Ariz.; and a sister, Angeline “Myrtle” Ferguson of Chapel Hill.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel.
Robert Harrison Shelf
Elder Robert Harrison Shelf, 85, of Winston-Salem died February 8 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, following a short period of illness. He was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem, born July 3, 1919, to Lewis and Mary Moore Shelf. He was a member of Jehovah Shammah Church of Faith and Worship. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Mary Moore Shelf; his wife, Salena Oaks Shelf; two sons, Timmy and Harold Sheff; and eight siblings, Marvin, Browdus, Pauline, Carrie and Gladys Sheff, Clarice Miller, Almeta Claybrook and Lewis “Joe” Shelf.
Surviving are 12 children, Robert Shelf Jr. and wife Faye, Lillie Mae Farabee, Glenda Miller, Alberta Speas, Richard Shelf, Larry Sheff and wife Cassandra, Edward Shelf, Mary McIlwain and husband Willie, DeWanda Shelf, Chester Shelf and wife Donna, Lester Shelf and wife Sandra, Paul Shelf and wife Katherine of Lewisville and Gladys Sheff of Rural Hall; 28 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Lucious Oliver officiating. Burial followed in Piedmont Memorial Gardens.
Amanda Shelton Holder
Amanda Shelton Holder, 89, of Clemmons died at her home on February 8. She was born on June 11, 1915, to Benjamin and Carrie Shelton in Forsyth County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Conrad M. Holder and a daughter, Paulette Holder Slater.
Surviving are a sister, Ada Forrest of Pfafftown; two sons, Paul Holder, and Charlie Holder and wife Cindy, all of Clemmons; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held at Pfafftown Community Cemetery.
Victor Rabbetts
Victor Rabbetts, 69, of Pfafftown died February 8 after a long illness. He was born in Bournemouth, England, on January 9, 1936, and came to this country in the 1960s. He retired from the Boeing Co. after 32 years. In that time, he and his wife lived in Mozambique, France, Ireland, Morocco, Newfoundland and England, then retired in North Carolina. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Peter and Ted.
Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Christine, and son Ian, 25; his sister-in-law and nieces and nephews in England, Canada and California; his mother-in-law and sisters-in-law in Washington; and his beloved dogs, Bobby and Impi.
Edith Smith Streetman
Edith Smith Streetman, 91, of Winston-Salem died February 10 at Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. She was born October 13, 1914, in High Point to Clarence Ivy and Josephine Dale Kirkman Smith. She was a member of Ardmore United Methodist Church and the Sunset Drive Ladies Auxiliary. She was the office manager for Colonial Grocery for 45 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Morgan Eugene Streetman, and a brother, Clarence Ivy Smith Jr.
Surviving are a son, Terry Streetman and wife Susan of Clemmons; a grandson, Scott Streetman and wife Chris of Chandler, Ariz.; a great-granddaughter, Haley; and a sister, Lucille Smith Anderson of Chester, Va.
A graveside service was held in Forsyth Memorial Park with Dr. Frank Grice officiating.
Franklin Delano Sams
Franklin Delano Sams, 68, of Pinnacle died February 10 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born December 5, 1936 in Stokes County. He was former chairman of the Stokes County Board of Elections. He was a staunch Democrat, an avid beekeeper and a fox hunter. Mr.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Duncan Sams of the home, four brothers and sisters-in-law, Lloyd and Joann Sams of Pinnacle, Glenn and Ellen Sams of Pilot Mountain, Carlos and Faye Sams of Pinnacle, and Alvin P. Sams of King; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Estelle and Eugene Gordon of Pinnacle, and Virginia and Michael Lyons of Clemmons; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Wesley Sams and Lillian Irene Sams; and a sister, Shirley Sams Fulk.
Funeral services were held at Rock House Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Vance Jones and Elder J. H. Keaton officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Merlie May Chamberlain Lawson
Merlie May Chamberlain Lawson, 96, of Clemmons died June 6. She was born February 23, 1909, in Yadkin County to Joseph William and Amelia Comer Chamberlain. She was born and raised on a farm in Yadkin County and came to Winston-Salem as a young adult, where she was employed most of her working years at Hanes Hosiery. She settled in Clemmons, where she raised her family. She was a member of Clemmons First Baptist Church. She was known for her gardening skills and how there was something blooming most all seasons. Over the years, and as her health permitted, she was active at her church in Sunday school, quilt ministry, cancer bandage making, Circle meeting, Senior meetings, as well as the Clemmons Senior Citizens and Clemmons Arts and Craft Guild. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Dallas and Herman Chamberlain; sisters, Maggie Reavis, Ollie Sharpe, Daisy Holcomb, Dollie Doss, Ethel Renegar and Juanita Cranfill; and great-grandson, Dillon Thomas Kuroda.
Surviving are a son, C.T. Overby and wife Barbara of Laurinburg; two daughters, Betty Chapman and husband Elto of Nashville, Tenn., and Doris Barney and husband Gary of Clemmons; six grandchildren, Lisa Roberts and husband Steve, Pam Overby, Randall Overby and wife Iris, Vickie Roberts, Amy Kuroda and husband Don and Jill Hutcheson and husband Jay; nine great-grandchildren, Scott and Morgan Overby, Ginnie, Anna and Walter Roberts, Jessica Spinale, Natalie Kuroda and Joseph and Matthew Hutcheson; a sister, Mary Lee Comer of Yadkinville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Vogler Clemmons Chapel with Dr. Robert Phillips and Rev. Michael Waters officiating. Burial followed in Bethel Baptist Cemetery in Yadkinville.
Tressie Lue Ray Saffel
Tressie Lue Ray Saffel, 69, of Winston-Salem died June 6 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born September 17, 1935, in Forsyth County to the late Fredrick Lee and Cora Myers Spach.
Surviving are a daughter, Debbie Lenderman and husband Randall; and two grandchildren, Matt and Holly Lenderman, all of Clemmons; three sisters, Annie Mae Craver, Mabel Perry and Geraldine Townsend, all of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with Rev. Steve Tilley officiating.
Dennis James Mangan
Dennis James Mangan, 65, of Winston-Salem died unexpectedly June 6 in his home. He was a Marine Corps veteran who served from 1957 to 1960, and was an active member of the Elks Lodge on Silas Creek Parkway. He served as Exalted Ruler from 1992 to 1993, as well as in a host of committees and community service events. He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Brenda Poston Mangan, in December 1999.
Surviving are his four children, Joe Lowder and wife Kelly of Clemmons, Larry Mangan of Durham, Mia Mabe and husband Lonze of Walnut Cove and Katrina Stewart and husband Allen of Belews Creek; a granddaughter, Taylor Marie Stewart, also of Belews Creek; his brothers, Terry, Michael, Kevin and Patrick; sisters Maureen Finn and Kate McNamara; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Marie Finney Barefoot
Marie Finney Barefoot, 81, of Winston-Salem died June 6 of cancer at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. She was born Ellen Marie Finney on February 19, 1924, in Boonville to Dr. and Mrs. Jonathan Richard Finney (the former Darrie Ellen Wagoner). She was the widow of Charles W. Barefoot and worked for 30 years as a bookkeeper for his business, Barefoot Auto Parts Inc. She was a member of Ardmore Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her sister, Gladys West of Winston-Salem; and four brothers, Clement Finney of East Bend, Bryant Finney of Richmond, Va., Carl Finney of Rocky Mount and Valk Finney of Yadkinville.
Surviving are her son, Richard Barefoot of New York, N.Y.; two daughters, Vicki Barefoot-Gersh and husband Scott of Raleigh and Ellen Morrow and husband Ted of Asheboro; two grandchildren, Jessica Gersh and Bradley Gersh; and two stepgrandchildren, Joel Morrow and Auburn Morrow of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held at Ardmore Baptist Church with Rev. Christa Warise officiating. Burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park.
Brenda Gayle Myers
Brenda Gayle Myers, 60, of Winston-Salem died June 4 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born September 19, 1944, in Forsyth County to the late James Thomas and Ella Mae Hicks. She worked many years at Zayre’s Department Store.
Surviving are her husband, John W.C. Myers of Walkertown; a sister, Bonnie Robertson of Winston-Salem; four children, Michael Becker of Virginia, Margie Burton and husband Troy of Walkertown, Jeanette Myers Brooks and husband Damon of Walkertown and Robert Leroy “Bobby” Myers Jr. of Old Town; three stepchildren, Rita Collison of Clemmons, Michelle Myers of Walnut Cove and Beverly Myers Godfrey and husband Eddie of Rural Hall; two grandchildren, Angel “Sugar Babe” and Jonathan “Rocky” Wilson; a number of grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a number of nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special friend, Mary Goins.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel Brother Don Collins officiating. Burial followed in Woodland Cemetery.
James Richard Flynn Sr.
James Richard “Jimmy” Flynn Sr., 77, of Winston-Salem died June 8 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born June 14, 1927, in Forsyth County. He was owner and operator of Flynn’s Coffee Shop until his retirement in 1987. He was also active in real estate. He was the first president of the Winston-Salem Restaurant Association and a past member of Piedmont Civitan Club. He served in the U.S. Navy in both World War II and the Korean conflict. He was a longtime member of Ardmore United Methodist Church and served there in many capacities. He was also a Mason and a Shriner. He volunteered at Medical Park Hospital for 15 years. He enjoyed bridge, gardening, reading and being with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ravena Douglas Flynn and Dora Helen Solomon Flynn; his brother, R.D. “Sonny” Flynn Jr.; and his oldest son, James Richard “Ricky” Flynn Jr.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Nancy Strailman Flynn; their children, Cathy Amos and husband Jim of Lewisville and Doug Flynn and wife Charlotte of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Matthew Amos of San Diego, Calif., Michael Amos of Orange County, Calif., Jonathan Amos of Lewisville, Steven Flynn of Winston-Salem and Alisha Flynn of Winston-Salem; and two great-granddaughters, Cassie and Juliana Amos of Raleigh.
Funeral services were held at Ardmore United Methodist Church. Entombment followed in Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum.
