WRIGHT

WESTFIELD -- Mrs. Rena Adams Wright, 82, the widow of Mr. Elmer Edison Wright of 1057 Collins Road died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at the Stokes Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Danbury. Mrs. Wright was born Sept. 11, 1918, to the late John Thomas and Mary Collins Adams. She was a homemaker and farmer and was the oldest member of Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Mrs. Wright served Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church for many years as caretaker of its cemetery until her health failed. Surviving are three sisters and brothers-in-law, Louise Ward of Walnut Cove, Betty and Odell Alley and Barbara Jean and Fountain Mannings of Danbury; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Gaylon and Novella Adams of Westfield and Roy Adams of King; two granddaughters; five grandsons; several great-grandchildren; special friends Mary Simmons and Kenneth and Barbara Wright of Westfield; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Wright was preceded in death by five sisters, Thelma Cox, Lela Smith, Marie Joyce, Ersell McHone and Hessie Mae Southern, and two brothers, Troy Adams and James Gaither Adams. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at the Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church by Elder David Edwards and Elder J.H. Keaton. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Wright is at the Cox-Needham Funeral Home and Chapel in Pilot Mountain and will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the funeral service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening, Jan. 10, 2001, at the funeral home and other times at the home of Gaylon and Novella Adams, Westfield. Memorials may be made to the Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery Fund, c/o Barbara Wright, 3660 Horseshoe Road, Westfield, NC 27053. The Wright family is being served by the Cox-Needham Funeral Home and Chapel in Pilot Mountain.

ABBOTT

MOUNT AIRY -- Betty Jo Ellis Abbott, 63, of 1000 Ridgecrest Lane died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. She was a born Nov. 11, 1937, in Chatham County to the late John Luther and Louise McGhee Ellis and was of the Baptist faith. She is survived by a daughter, Donna Marie Gates of Winston-Salem; sons and a daughter-in-law, Jonathan Caffin Abbott of Winston-Salem, Aaron Arrington and Mi Son Abbott of San Antonio, Texas, and Christopher Lee Abbott of Winston-Salem; grandchildren Angela Abbott, Sarah Abbott and Pamela Abbott; sister and brother-in-law Sue Ellis and Dalmar Everhart of Mount Airy; brother and sister-in-law Ronald Alton and Diana Ellis of Mount Airy; and nieces and nephews Greg Everhart, Kim Bruner, Paige Beyer and Jeffrey Ellis. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Howell Funeral Chapel in Mount Airy conducted by the Rev. Jon Cawley with interment at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday night, Jan. 11, 2001, at the funeral home and other times the family will be at 143 Ellis Acres Lane, Mount Airy.

BECK

MOCKSVILLE -- Mr. Walter Taft Beck, 92, of Raymond Street passed away Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at his residence. Mr. Beck was born Sept. 15, 1908, in Davie County to the late William A. and Lula Bowles Beck. He was a member of Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church and a lifelong member of D.A.V. (Disabled American Veterans) and retired from L.A. Reynolds Construction Co. where he was a truck driver for 28 years and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. Beck is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Moore Beck of 34 years; two sons, Mickey W. Beck and wife Ernestine and Stacy A. Beck and wife Francis of Mocksville; three daughters, Brenda B. Huff, Dorothy M. Cranfill and husband Cecil and Peggy B. Whitaker, all of Mocksville; 13 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and a brother, Noah F. Beck of Mocksville. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Davie Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Brad Holliman and the Rev. Tim Starbuck officiating. Burial will follow at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at the funeral home. Memorials can be made to Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church, c/o Kenny Harpe, 1813 U.S. Highway 601 N., Mocksville, NC 27028. Davie Funeral Service LLC, 416 Valley Road, Mocksville, will be serving the Beck family.

BRINKLEY

MOUNT AIRY -- Mr. James William Brinkley Jr., 79, of N. Franklin Road died at Alleghany Hospital after a short illness Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001. He was born in Surry County on June 17, 1921, to the late James William Brinkley Sr. and Selena Jane Brinkley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, J.D. Brinkley. James was a veteran of the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army and served during World War II, was a member of the V.F.W. and DVA. He was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Florence Elizabeth Brinkley of Sun Bridge, Sparta; a daughter, Virginia Brinkley of Mount Airy; two sons, Ronald Dale and Rhonda Brinkley of Star and Freddie and Patricia Brinkley of Mount Airy; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Geneva Marion of Alabama, Mrs. Henry (Lois) Seivers and Mrs. Joe (Cleo) Haymore of Mount Airy. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Davis & Son Funeral Home Chapel in Dobson with the Rev. Trent Lyons officiating. Burial will be in Skyline Memory Gardens in Mount Airy. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday evening at the funeral home.

CONTOS

Mr. John Nicholas Contos Sr., 77, of Winston-Salem died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Meadowbrook Terrace of Winston-Salem. Mr. Contos was born July 31, 1923, in Forsyth County to Nicholas John and Ethel Contos. In addition to his parents, Mr. Contos was preceded in death by his wife, Doris S. Contos, and two sisters, Kathryn C. Fields and Zoe C. Cooper. Surviving are a son, Skip Contos Jr. and wife Pam of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Karen Fulcher and husband Hugh of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Helen Rike and Nicky Lane; grandsons Thomas E. Fulcher and wife Susan and Chip Contos III and wife Lori; a granddaughter, Annette Lankford; and four great-granddaughters. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Park, with the Rev. David Fouche officiating. Memorials may be made to the Trinity Center Inc., 640 Holly Ave., Winston-Salem, or the Humane Society, P.O. Box 15605, Winston-Salem, NC 27113-0605. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family.

CORNE

Mrs. Barbara Jean Clifft Corne, 59, of Winston-Salem passed away Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Indianapolis, Ind., Dec. 28, 1941, to Donald and Johnny Mae Hardsock Clifft Sr. She was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Jonda Corne Williams and husband Mark Daniel of Winston-Salem, Miss Veronica L. Corne of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Cynthia D. Martin and husband Russell of Winston-Salem; a son, Mr. Billie Gene Corne Jr. and wife Patsy of Winston-Salem; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Evelyn Bensheimer of Spencer, Ind.; two brothers, Mr. Donald Clifft Jr. of California and Mr. Bobby Clifft of Arizona; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Martha Osteen of Piedmont, S.C.; brothers-in-law Kenneth Lee Corne and Jerry Wayne Hager of Winston-Salem; and adopted son, Zachary John Harmon of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Gospel Light Baptist Church cemetery with Dr. Bobby Roberson and the Rev. Mike Lane officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. DOUGLAS

Mrs. Ellen Douglas, 72, the widow of Mr. Herman C. Douglas of Waughtown Street, died Jan. 8, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Harnett County to Zeb Wyatt and Ollie Hester Turner on March 23, 1928. Mrs. Douglas was a member of Waughtown Baptist Church and also a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of Western Electric. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Dorene Gourley of Walkertown; four children, Donald and wife Wanda Douglas, Cynthia Douglas, Annette Douglas and Michael and wife Terry Douglas, all of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Eddie Douglas, Christy Fulp, Mark Smith and Michael Douglas Jr.; and six great-grandchildren, Michael, Ashley and Cyrus Fulp, Justin and Jordan Smith and Tyler Douglas. A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with Dr. Bud Owen officiating. Burial will be at Woodland cemetery. GRIFFIN

KING -- Mr. Ernest Ralton Griffin, 85, died of renal cancer Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Scenic View Retirement Home. He was born Aug. 22, 1915, in Farmington to Dr. Ernest M. Griffin and Blanche Lee Griffin. He graduated from King High School and attended High Point College. He was previously employed by Continental Life Insurance Co. Mr. Griffin was a member of King Moravian Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Renard Dalton Griffin. Surviving are a sister-in-law, Mrs. Annie Sue Hendrix Griffin of King; two nieces, Mrs. Susan Griffin Stockton and husband Thomas Pleasants Stockton of Winston-Salem, and Mrs. Melodie Griffin Pugh and husband Richard Edward Pugh of Jacksonville, Fla.; two great-nephews, Charles Selle, III (Skip) and wife Susan Shire Selle of Boca Raton, Fla., and Griffin Gates Pugh of Jacksonville, Fla., and a great-niece, Elizabeth Dalton Pugh of Jacksonville, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday at King Moravian Church by the Rev. Jimmie Newsome Sr. The family will receive friends at 3 p.m. in the church before the service. GRIFFIN-ALLEN

EDEN -- Mrs. Venessa Kay Griffin-Allen, 43, of 716 S. Hamilton St., known to family and friends as "Ms. Kay," departed this life, Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at Duke Medical Center in Durham. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Saint John United Methodist Church in Eden. Burial will be in Eden Gardens cemetery. She was a member of Bold Springs Baptist Church in Ruffin and the owner of A&J Daycare Center. Kay will forever be remembered for her dedication to work and love for her son. She leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her memory, her parents, Forest Odell and Ida Mae Griffin of Eden; husband, John Allen and devoted son, Dequan Griffin-Allen of the home; two sisters, Forestene Sumler of Winston-Salem and Connie Griffin-Slade of Eden; brother, Lewis-Clifton Griffin of Stoneville; three nieces; three nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Perry-Spencer Funeral Home, Eden and other times at 1024 Sharp St., Eden.

HARRIS

TRAPHILL -- Mr. William Herman Harris, 92, of 10584 Traphill Road died Tuesday evening, Jan. 9, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Old Roaring River Baptist Church by the Rev. Jim Darnell, the Rev. Mac Warren and the Rev. James Weaver. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Mr. Harris was born in Alleghany County Aug. 13, 1908, to Thomas and Annie Bryan Harris. He was a veteran of World War II, a member of Charity United Methodist Church, was retired from Blum Construction Co. and was a retired farmer. Surviving are his wife, Fay Warren Harris of the home; a son, Dale Harris of Traphill; a daughter, Judy Dupree of Roaring River; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Harold Harris of Bath, James Harris of Durham, and Bobby Harris of Moncure; and his stepmother, Isabell Harris of Moncure. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Kennedy Funeral Home in Elkin.

KEY

ARARAT -- Mr. Nelson Robie Key, 68, husband of Norris Coe Key of 541 Moser Road, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at N.C. Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem. Mr. Key was born Feb. 10, 1932, in Surry County to Robie Fletcher and Connie Bertha Carlyle Key. Mr. Key was a bus driver for the handicapped for Surry County schools and a retired custodian for Surry County schools. He was a loyal and faithful member of South Surry Volunteer Fire Department for many years, was also on the board of directors and served many years as a first responder. Mr. Key was a member of Pine Hill Friends Meeting. He enjoyed working in his church and serving in all community affairs. He served on several different committees in the church. He is survived by his wife, Norris Coe Key of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Wade Nelson Key and Joyce of Siloam; a granddaughter, Emily Denise Key of Siloam; future grandson-in-law, Lanny Whitaker Jr. of Siloam; a sister and brother-in-law, Decie and John P. Bowman of Dobson; a brother and sister-in-law, J.W. and Frances Key of Dobson; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Pine Hill Friends Meeting, conducted by the Rev. Jon Reece and the Rev. Billy Britt. Mr. Key will lie in state at the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The Key family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday evening, Jan. 11, 2001, at the Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain and other times at the home of Wade and Joyce Key, 583 Quaker Church Road, Siloam. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Pine Hill Friends Meeting Building Fund, c/o Patsy Bruner, 638 Eldora Road, Ararat, NC 27007. LEWELLYN

WALKERTOWN -- Mr. Barry Francis Lewellyn, 60, won his battle with cancer on Jan. 9, 2001. Mr. Lewellyn was born July 1, 1940, in Mecklenburg County to Maurice and Frances Young Lewellyn. He was a distribution supervisor for Piedmont Natural Gas and attended Rosebud Christian Church. He was an avid trap shooter. He was preceded in death by his son, Stephen Lewellyn and his father, Maurice Lewellyn. Surivors include his wife, Michelle E. Lewellyn of the home; his mother, Frances Lewellyn of Clemmons; three daughters, Elizabeth Anne Lewellyn of the home, Marsha (Lindsey) Hamm of Dallas, Texas, and Bridget (David) Hofmann of Winston-Salem; two sons, Keith Lewellyn of Clearwater, Fla., and Mark Lewellyn of California; sisters Carolyn (Willard) Harrison of Winston-Salem and Susan (John) Schramm of Clemmons; brothers Phillip (Thelma) Lewellyn of Sumter, S.C., Leroy (Diane) Lewellyn of Lexington and David (Camilla) Lewellyn of Greensboro; and a grandchild, Megan Lewellyn. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Rosebud Christian Church, with the Rev. Louis Locke and the Rev. Jerry Benfield officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. MARTIN

YADKINVILLE -- Mrs. Ivery Bowman Martin, 84, a loving mother and grandmother of Courtney Church Road passed away Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at the Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. She was born July 2, 1916, in Yadkin County to the late Riley and Etta Sutphin Bowman. Mrs. Martin was retired from Davie County Hospital and was a faithful member of Courtney Baptist Church, where she served as the recording secretary for 33 years and was a Sunday school teacher for 40 years. She married Harold Wesley Martin on Jan. 11, 1936. He preceded her in death on July 17, 1996. Surviving are her children, the Rev. Dr. Jimmie (Loretta) Martin Sr. of Jamestowne, Johnnie (Patricia) Martin of Yadkinville, and Lynn (Gray) Pinnix of Hamptonville; grandchildren Jimmie H. (Marty) Martin Jr., Jameson (Jodi) Martin, Heather (Zane) Brazell, Heath (Brandi) Martin, and Landon (Angela) Pinnix; and two sisters, Violet Caudle and Nell Renegar of Yadkinville. Her funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Courtney Baptist Church by the Rev. John Brown and Batry Smith. She will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, U.S. Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. PEPPER

ASHEVILLE -- James Arthur Pepper Jr., 81, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at the VA Medical Center. He was born in Santiago de Cuba. He was the son of the late James A. Pepper and Alicia W. Pepper of Jobabo, Province Oriente, Camaguey, Cuba, and Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y. He attended Duke University and served in World War II as a pilot and flight instructor in the U.S. Army Air Corps, attaining the rank of captain. He was retired from the automobile business. He was a 32nd degree Mason. Surviving are his wife, Mary Frankel Pepper of Asheville; three sons, James Arthur Pepper III and wife Linda of Winston-Salem, John William "Jack" Pepper Sr. and wife Lisa of Boone and Stephen Theodore Pepper and wife Cindy of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; two stepchildren, Scott Tanner Duffy and wife Mary Stewart of Charlotte and Susan Mary Duffy of Asheville; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Grace Episcopal Church in Asheville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 202 Centerport Drive, Suite 100, Greensboro, NC 27409 or to the charity of the donor's choice.

PERRYMAN

Mr. Clyde Mayfield Perryman, 91, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Springwood Care of Forsyth. Mr. Perryman was born Feb. 26, 1909, in Davidson County to the late George Augustus and Mary Weisner Perryman. He lived most of his life in the Old Town community and was a member of Northwest Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucile Yarbrough Perryman; his second wife, Lois Bodenheimer Carter Perryman; and 11 brothers and sisters. He retired from Sealtest Dairies with over 40 years of service. Mr. Perryman is survived by his children, Carolyn Leinbach and husband Gray of Virginia Beach, Va., Dianne Wilson of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and David Perryman of Kernersville; two stepdaughters, Carol Johnson and husband Bill of Greensboro and Judy Petree and husband G.C. of Pfafftown; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; his sister, Ruth Perryman of Winston-Salem; and his brothers-in-law, William Lawing, Enos Winfrey and Dick Yarbrough. A graveside service at Forsyth Memorial Park will be conducted by the Rev. Luther Morphis at 1 p.m. Thursday. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to RHA Health Services Inc., Guilford/Forsyth Counties, P.O. Box 2299, Kernersville, NC 27285-2299. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel is serving the family.

SHUTT

Mrs. Myrtle Rose Shutt of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Jan. 7, 1912, in Yadkin County to Thomas and Nancy Swaim Rose. Mrs. Shutt was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. She lived most of her life in Forsyth County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Shutt; three brothers, John, Tommy and Marvin Rose; and four sisters, Ila Cockerham, Nova Roberson, Collie Clubb and Ola Speas. Surviving are three daughters, P. Gail Holmes, W. Kaye Shutt and Janice Bernard-Jordan, all of Winston-Salem; a sister, Lillie Allen; and three grandchildren, Alysha Gail Staten, William Edward Williams and wife, Frankie, and Doris Kaye Jordan. Stella Cockerham and several other nieces and nephews also survive along with her beloved dog, "Gigi." Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Tom Bagnal officiating. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 3627 Konnoak Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27127. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family.
