Claude Richard Edwards
Claude Richard Edwards, 81, a of Winston-Salem, died May 6 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Mount Airy to Benton E. and Lucinda Handy Edwards. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and a retired industrial-arts teacher with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system. He taught at Griffith High School and Parkland High School. He was North Carolina’s Industrial Arts Teacher of the Year in 1969. He was a member of Ardmore Baptist Church. He was a member of the Piedmont Craftsmen, the American Marquetry Society and the Forsyth Gem and Mineral Club.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Willis Edwards of the home; three daughters, Ellen Drechsler and husband Paul of Mocksville, Edith Lawson and husband Tom of Lewisville and Claudia Page of Winston-Salem; a sister, Margaret Gunter of Mount Airy; five grandchildren, Abe and Zach Drechsler, Andrew and Evan Lawson and Kaitlin Page; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Ardmore Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Ireland and Rev. Christa Warise officiating, and burial followed at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Winston-Salem.
Travis Nifong Zink
Travis Nifong Zink, 25, of Clemmons died August 23 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Forsyth County on November 9, 1978, to Paul Lee Zink and Sandra Nifong Zink. He was a landscape foreman with D.W. Maintenance. He was also a member of J.F.L.
Surviving are his parents, Paul Lee and Sandra Nifong Zink of the home; his maternal grandmother, Sallie Nifong of the home; a brother, Paul Lee Zink II of Lewisville; and a sister, Nicole Miller of Winston-Salem.
A celebration of life was held at Faith Missionary Alliance Church with Rev. Michael Gates officiating.

Philip Henry Mock
Philip Henry Mock, 88, of Lewisville died August 24 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born June 27, 1916, in Lewisville to Jasper Wiley and Anna Harper Mock. As long as his health permitted, he was an active church member and Sunday school teacher at Lewisville Baptist Church. He enjoyed his family, farming and landscaping. He was married for 59 years to Mary Elizabeth Beroth Mock, who preceded him in death.
Surviving are three sons, Phil Mock and wife Jean of Lewisville, Stanley O. Mock of Lewisville and Wiley M. Mock and wife Carolyn of Grassy Creek; two daughters, Mary Snider and husband Mark of Big Lake, Minn., and Anita Redding and husband Dan of Hudson; nine grandchildren, Philip David Mock of Lewisville, Jan Tardle of Sharpsburg, Ga., Kelli Epps of North Wilkesboro, Kerri Hefner of Taylorsville, Teresa Kite of Big Lake, Minn., Paul Snider of Kernersville and Daniel, Jonathan and Thomas Redding of Hudson; eight great-grandchildren, Melinda Mock of Greensboro, Ashley Mock of Lewisville, Micaela and Kendall Tardie of Sharpsburg, Ga., Mary Grace and Josie Marie of North Wilkesboro and Rachel and Cadi Kite of Minnesota; three brothers, Allen H. Mock of Lewisville, J.W. Mock Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., and Fred G. Mock of East Bend; and three sisters, Lillian Beroth of Vienna Village, Blake Shouse of Winston-Salem and Marianna McKinney of St. Augustine, Fla.
Funeral services were held at Lewisville Baptist Church with Rev. Ralph Stanley, Rev. Kerri Hefner, Rev. Dan Redding and Rev. Mark Snider officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Gladys Lawrence Stuart
Gladys Lawrence Stuart, 88, formerly of Elkin died August 25 at the home of her daughter, Deanna Cockerham, in Lewisville. She was born July 3, 1916, in Surry County to Lester and Ollie Woodruff Lawrence. She was a member of Northwest Baptist Church in Winston-Salem and was retired from Chatham Manufacturing Co. in Elkin. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary for the Elkin VFW Post and the Lucy Hanes Chatham Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude C. Stuart, in 1966; an infant son, Claude C. Stuart Jr.; two sisters, Sadie L. Rierson and Mavareen L. Foil; and a stepgrandson, Mark Cockerham.
Surviving are her children, Jay Clyde “Bud” Stuart of Punta Gorda, Fla., Carol S. Burgess II and husband Rev. Sam of Garner and Deanna “Dee” S. Cockerham and husband Mackie of Lewisville; a sister, Lestine Mackie and husband Grady of Yadkinville; her grandchildren, Sam Burgess III, Debbie Burcham and husband Alan, Linda Cleve II and husband Bill, Jay Stuart, Scott Stuart, Madge Webster and husband David, Barbara Smith and husband Steve and Stephen Cockerham and wife Melanie; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held at Elkin Valley Baptist Church cemetery with Rev. Sam Burgess II officiating.
Buford Webster Elledge
Buford Webster Elledge, 78, of Wilkesboro died August 24 at Avante at Wilkesboro. He was born in Forsyth County on August 27, 1925, to Oliver Harrison Elledge Sr. and Esther Nichols Elledge.
Surviving are three sisters, Anita Hamby of Pfafftown, Lutrell Chapman of Clemmons and Imogene Hudson of Burlington; and a brother, Oliver Harrison Elledge Jr. of Tampa, Fla.
A graveside service was held at Arbor Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Dean Rector officiating.
Judy Kay Davis Smith
Judy Kay Davis Smith, 52, of King died August 25. She was born in Forsyth County on October 24, 1951, to James Franklin and Minnie Cobbler Davis. She was a member of Baux Mountain Baptist Church in Germanton, where she attended as long as her health permitted. She loved children and worked in child care for a great part of her life. She was a Christian woman who loved her family and her church. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Surviving are her husband, Dirwood Smith of the home; a son, Warren Still of Winston-Salem; three stepchildren, Donnalea Reynolds of Kernersville, Maria Rickels and husband James of Walnut Cove and Perry Jonathan Smith of Kernersville; a special grandson, Jeffrey Daniel Clifton of the home; two other grandchildren, Olivia Reynolds and Tabitha Rickles; three stepgrandchildren, Samantha Reynolds, Samantha Rickles and Brandon Rickles; a sister, Jane Perdew and husband David of Lewisville; and a special friend, Virginia Perdew of King.
A graveside service was held at Mount Olive Baptist Church Cemetery in King with Brother Mark Smith and Brother Bob June officiating.
Harold Thomas Thornton
Harold Thomas Thornton of Lewisville died August 30 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born in Radford, Va., to the late Wilbur Gordon and Flora Graham Thornton. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church and he attended Vienna Baptist Church with his wife. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He retired from Sears after 31 years of service. He dedicated his life to his church and serving the Lord. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Helen Thornton.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma Bean Thornton of the home; two daughters, Teresa T. Roop and Lisa T. Bryant, both of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Christy, Ben and Brie Roop, and Jackson Bryant; two brothers, Lee Thornton of Gaffney S.C., and Rudolf Thornton of Pulaski County, Va.; a sister, Sybil T. White of Gaffney S.C.; two stepsons, Jimmy Crews and T.L. Crews, both of Winston-Salem; a beloved canine companion, Sarge; and two very special in-home nurses, Atasha and Brenda.
Funeral services were held at Temple Baptist Church with Dr. Bud Owen and Pastor Kevin Thompson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Hazel Lovelace Essex
Hazel Lovelace Essex, 90, of Clemmons died August 28 at Clemmons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Roanoke, Va., to Azzie I. and Mattie Donahue Lovelace. She loved and was dedicated to her family. She was a Member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kernersville. She was retired from Citibank in New York.
Surviving are a niece, Barbara Lovelace Griggs of Lewisville; a nephew, Ron Lovelace and wife Judy of Clemmons; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
A funeral Mass of the Christian Burial was held at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Joe Tustin officiating. Burial followed in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
Lawrence Newton Haines
Lawrence Newton Haines, 53, of Pfafftown died August 29 at Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness. Born May 26, 1951, in Louisville, Ky., he came to Winston-Salem in 1952 when his father started a job with Western Electric Co. They lived on Brookwood Drive. He moved to Bracey Ridge Court in Pfafftown in 1992. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army. He was employed by MicroFibers Inc., where he worked as a print machine operator for the past 25 years. He enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle with his good friends and he shared his home with his beloved cats.
Surviving are his brother, Marion D. Haines and wife Jackie of Cocoa, Fla.; his nephew, Benjamin Haines; his aunt, Clora Burnett of Washington Court House, Ohio; cousins in Greensboro, Ohio and elsewhere; and good friends Bobby Scott and Mike Kiger.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Joe Carlton Cottrell
Joe Carlton Cottrell, 78, of Clemmons died August 27 at Forsyth Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born June 18, 1926, in Winston-Salem, the son of Rufus Hester and Ella Mae Cornish Cottrell. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired after 32 years of service with the Winston-Salem Police Department. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane House Cottrell, in 1997.
Surviving are two sons, John Cottrell and wife Donna of Belews Creek and Richard Cottrell and wife Gwen of Pfafftown; and four grandchildren, Sarah and Jacob Cottrell and Zachary and Clayton Powell.
A graveside service was held at House Family Cemetery in Thelma.
Lizzie Cheek Anders
Lizzie Cheek Anders, 90, of Rural Hall died August 27. She was born August 4, 1914, in Yadkin County and spent most of her life in Forsyth County. She was a dedicated member of Freedom Baptist Church in Rural Hall, serving for more than 30 years in the nursery. She helped raise a host of children, including 56 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Anders; a daughter-in-law, Lois Stoltz Anders; a son-in-law, Robert Vernon McNiel; and a grandson, Andrew Merritt.
Surviving are five sons, Roy Anders and wife Martha of Tobaccoville, Dallas Anders and wife Jesse of Walnut Cove, Robert Anders of Rural Hall, Ted Anders and wife Sue of King and Larry Anders and wife Jan of Rural Hall; two daughters, Katherine Anders McNeil of King and Evelyn Anders Hayden McGuire of Pinnacle; and a brother, Hobart Cheek and wife Marie of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held at Freedom Baptist Church with Pastor John T. Byerly and Pastor Doug Anders officiating. A graveside service was held at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown.
Velma Counts Wood
Velma “Barney” Counts Wood, 80, of High Point died August 27 at her home. She was born March 11, 1924, in Newberry, S.C., a daughter of Emmitt Counts and Ila Belle Dukes Prather. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Johnny Weir Wood.
Surviving are four children, Cindy Brewer and husband Ed of Clemmons, Allen Wood and wife Brenda and Phillip Wood and wife Tricia, all of High Point, and Malena Didenko and husband John of Mocksville; a sister, Thelma “Sparky” C. Graham of Newberry, S.C.; four grandsons, Paul Wood of High Point, Jonathan Wood of New Jersey, David Brewer of Boone and Bryan Hedgecock of High Point; four granddaughters, Katherine Sawyer of Clemmons and Maria, Vanessa, and Grace Didenko, all of Mocksville; and five great-grandchildren.
An inurnment service was held at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Phil Bauguess officiating.
Doris Louise Warner Boose
Doris Louise Warner Boose, 92, of Clemmons, the widow of Samuel Alfred Boose, died October 19 at the Brian Center. She was born July 22, 1912, in Forsyth County to Burton Jacob and Lillie Whitman Warner. She and her husband owned and operated Boose Florist in Elkin. An avid gardener, she grew a lot of the flowers used at the florist. She also worked for Chatham Manufacturing Co. and was a member of the Church of Christ at Warners Chapel.
Surviving are two sisters, Virginia W. Elam and Mildred C. Warner, both of Lewisville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at the Church of Christ at Warners Chapel Cemetery with Minister Paul Kirkpatrick officiating.
Carol J. Nichols
Carol J. Nichols, 48, of Tobaccoville died October 18. She was born October 30, 1955, in Guilford County to Gathel Ray and Carol Dean Reed Jones.
Surviving are three sons, Jason Jeremiah Wood of Clemmons and George Edward Nichols Jr. and Michael Travis Nichols and wife Bambi, both of Tobaccoville; and a granddaughter, Autumn J. Nichols.
Funeral services were held at Tabernacle United Methodist Church with Rev. David Spaulding officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Evadine B. Tart
Evadine B. Tart, 79, of Winston-Salem, formerly of Fayetteville, died October 17 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born July 12, 1925, in Johnston County to James Floyd and Iva Jane Weaver Barefoot. She enjoyed spending time with and loved her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Parlie D.Tart; a son, Bobby Steven Tart; and a sister, Ruth Allen.
Surviving her are two sons, David E. Tart and wife Patsy of Hickory and Keith Tart and wife Lynn of Pfafftown; three granddaughters, Kimberly Lapeirre and husband Mike of Greensboro and Chelsea and Caroline Tart, both of Pfafftown; two sisters, Ernestine Johnson of Dunn and Jeannette Tripp of Dunn; and a brother, Shelton Barefoot of Lewisville.
A memorial service was held at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home in Fayetteville. A private burial was held in Lafayette Memorial Park.
Mary Fowle Perry Vance
Mary Fowle Perry Vance, 95, died October 20 at her home in Bermuda Village. She was born July 21, 1909, in Scotland Neck to John D. Perry and Julia Dunn Perry. She spent most of her life in Winston-Salem. After retiring from the Winston-Salem school system, she worked at the Baptist Hospital information desk for 13 years, then for All Points Research. She was an active member of First Baptist Church throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry Vance; her sister, Ione Perry Nicholson; and her brother, John D. Perry Jr.
Surviving are her son, Gerald Vance of Carolina Beach; her grandson, Gerald Vance Jr. of Wilmington; nieces Jan N. Assimos and husband Dean of Winston-Salem and Pat P. Moser of Chestertown, Md.; nephews Frank C. Nicholson Jr. and wife Marianne of Clemmons, David Burtner and wife Bette and Tiny Burtner of Greensboro; nine great-nieces and great-nephews; and four great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
A memorial service was held at First Baptist Church.
William U. Thompson Sr.
William U. Thompson Sr., 75, of Winston-Salem died October 19 at his home. He was born October 12, 1929, in Forsyth County to the late Sherman Dewitt and Berlie Westmoreland Thompson. He was a scoutmaster for Troop 981 and in 1973 he was awarded Scoutmaster of the Year. He was preceded in death by a sister, Connie White.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Eleanor, of the home; a son, William “Billy” Thompson Jr. of Thomasville; a daughter, Cheryl Lynn Tracy and husband Mike of Lexington; two granddaughters, Anna Carlton of Lewisville and Elizabeth Carlton of Chicago, Ill.; two grandsons, Jeffery and Matthew Thompson of Winston-Salem; a sister, Rachel Sheets of Washington; two brothers, Gorrell Thompson and wife Millie of Raleigh and Odell Thompson and wife Barbara of Lewisville; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Union United Methodist Church with Rev. Tom Albert officiating.
Julius Van Tuttle Jr.
Julius “Jack” Van Tuttle Jr., 69, of Advance died October 17 at his home. He was born November 26, 1934, in Forsyth County to Julius Van and Helen Willis Tuttle Sr. He served his country in the U.S. Navy and was an active member of Hillsdale United Methodist Church. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He showed his love for golf by serving as a volunteer at Tanglewood Park. He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Brooke Whittington.
Surviving are his wife, Josephine Cardwell Tuttle of the home; four daughters, Theresa Stanley, Samantha Crafford and husband Michael, all of Advance, Wanda Mathis and husband Dale, and Sheila Carlisle, all of Clemmons; two sons, Timothy Whittington and wife Teresa of Advance, and Julius Van Tuttle III of Clemmons; 13 grandchildren, Kristie and Josh Stanley, David and Megan Baxley, Millard, Brandon, Brandy and Eddie Smith, Luke and Drew Crafford, Jake Tuttle and Tim and Alex Whittington; and a brother, Leo Tuttle of Pine Hall.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel with Rev. Jerry Webb officiating. Burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory with military rites by District 11 Memorial Honor Guard.
Joseph Wood McClure
Joseph “Joey” Wood McClure, 22, of Pfafftown died October 21 in Boone. He was born March 25, 1982, in Roanoke, Va., to Lowell Wilson and Eileen Wood McClure. He was a member of Reynolda Presbyterian Church and went on several mission trips with the youth. He was a graduate of North Forsyth High School, class of 2000, where he was a member of the golf team and National Honor Society. He was presently a senior at Appalachian State University majoring in recreation management. He enjoyed photography and making pottery. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Anthony Aquino; and his paternal grandparents, T. Russell and Catherine McClure.
Surviving are his parents of the home; three brothers, Paul McClure and wife Heather of Charlotte, Gregory McClure and wife Tonia of San Diego, CA, and Thomas McClure of Winston-Salem; and his maternal grandmother, Gloria Aquino of the home.
A memorial service was held at Reynolda Presbyterian Church with Rev. Alan Wright and Dr. Richard Little officiating.
Daniel Wayne Culverhouse
Daniel “Dan” Wayne Culverhouse, 52, of Walnut Cove died October 22 at his home. He was born February 21, 1952, in Forsyth County, a son of the late Carl and Helen Atwood Culverhouse. He was a member of Bible Revival Ministries Center. He was employed by Paul’s Custom Painting in Walnut Cove.
Surviving are his wife, Judy Young Culverhouse of the home; a son, Paul Culverhouse of Clemmons; a stepdaughter, Michelle Young of Walnut Cove; a stepson, Michael Young of Belews Creek; a brother, David Cornatzer of Lewisville; a sister, Donna Whitmire of Lewisville; seven stepgrandchildren; a stepgreat-grandson; and a very special friend, Paul Rumley of Walnut Cove.
Funeral services were held at Bible Revival Ministries Center in Kernersville with Rev. Bill Daniel officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
