James Carlie (Jim) Welch of Lewisville died December 13 at N.C. Baptist Hospital.
Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Sue; his first-born Leia Welch Hamlyn; her husband, David and their children, Emma and Luke, all of Rutherford College; his baby girl, Kendra Welch Mobley; her husband, Joe and their children, Chelsea and Victoria, all of Mount Juliet, Tenn.; his sister, Joyce W. Templin of Sarasota, Fla.; and his mother, Gladys H. Welch of Clemmons.
A private family service was held.
Anna Shirley Sinn Dow
Anna Shirley Sinn Dow, 81, of Pfafftown died December 14 at the home of her daughter, Joanne. She was born January 23, 1921, in Hawthorne, N.J. She was a laureate member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, laureate Alpha Chapter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Dow.
Surviving are her daughters, Joanne Dow Proctor and husband Benny of Pfafftown and Helen Hamlin of Marietta, Ga.; son, Roger Dow and wife Linda of Potomac, Md.; grandchildren, Rebecca Doub and husband Wesley of Lewisville and Reid Hamlin of Georgia, Devon and Blake Dow of Potomac, Md.; great-grandson, Zayne Hamlin of Georgia; sisters, Clare LaBarre and husband George of Glen Rock, N.J., and Marge Skinner and husband Jack of Naples, Fla.
A memorial service was held in Winston-Salem.
LeRoy Erwin Neighbour Jr.
LeRoy Erwin Neighbour Jr., 81, of Winston-Salem died December 11 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born November 24, 1921, to the late LeRoy Erwin Neighbour Sr. and Grace Carl Neighbour in Plainfield, N.J. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the Telephone Pioneers of America and a veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Dora Ventola Neighbour; a son, Lawrence Neighbour; a daughter, Deborah Gottesman and husband Mark; and four grandchildren, Lauren, Jaclyn, Craig and Lawrence Jr.
A funeral Mass was held at Holy Family Catholic Church, and burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
Harold Sidney Scott
Harold Sidney Scott, 68, of Reidsville died December 12 at Britthaven of Madison. Mr. Scott was a native of Davidson County and the son of the late Sidney C. and Martha Hill Scott. He was a retired salesman for Alert Cable of Winston-Salem and was of the Methodist faith. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Arlene Pearman and Atha Everhart; and a stepson, Joseph D. Creed Jr.
Surviving are his wife, Jennie Collie Scott of the home; a daughter, Kathy Hamilton and husband Mike of Prince George, Va.; a sister, Bobbie Berrier and husband Walt; a brother, Grover Scott and wife Dot all of Clemmons; three granddaughters; and one step-granddaughter.
Funeral services were held at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel, and burial followed in Reidlawn Cemetery.
Jake Green Foster Sr.
Jake Green Foster Sr., 89, of Clemmons died February 18 at the Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons. He was born July 18, 1913, in Mocksville to the late William Henry and Katherine Cope Foster. He was retired from the maintenance department of P.H. Hanes Knitting, with 40 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Summers Foster, in 1983; a son, Jake G. Poster Jr.; and a brother.
Surviving are a daughter, Peggy Foster Burke of Lewisville; a brother, Joe Foster and wife Ethel of Winston-Salem; three grandsons, Barry Burke, Jake G. Foster III “Trey” and Sean David Foster; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Eaton Funeral Chapel with Rev. Crystal Alexander officiating, and burial followed at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Carl Eugene Dixson Sr.
Carl Eugene “Buddy” Dixson Sr., 83, executive and co-owner of regional distributor, Brown-Rogers-Dixson Co., and founder of the Crosley Group, an international distributor buying group of major appliances and electronics, died February 20. Born and raised in Winston-Salem, he was the husband of Phyllis Mae Morgan. He was a lifelong member of Augsburg Lutheran Church, where his maternal grandmother, Hulda Roediger Fishesser, was one of the charter members in 1891. He attended Duke University, where he lettered on the varsity tennis team. He returned home to manage the sporting-goods department of the Brown-Rogers-Dixson downtown store. During World War II, he served in the quartermaster corps of the U.S. Army at Love Field in Tampa, Fla., and later in Okinawa, in preparation for the planned invasion of Japan. After the war, he joined Brown-Rogers-Dixson as senior vice-president of the hardware wholesale division, which served Western North Carolina’s independent hardware retailers. Over the next 50 years, he expanded the business to include all of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, and started a major appliance and electronics division. In 1960, he was one of the executives who decided to welcome a group of civil-rights marchers to the company’s lunch counter. Shortly after, several prominent department stores in the Southeast changed their policy and followed suit. In 1976, as the result of manufacturers’ consolidation of major appliance and electronics brands, he started the Crosley Group, a distributor-owned appliance and electronics buying group. Starting with a small number of distributors, the group has grown to 38 distributors across the U.S. and other countries. Known to his golfing friends as “Big Buddy,” he will be missed by his many friends at Forsyth Country Club and Roaring Gap Country Club. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Phyllis; his father, William Nelson Dixson Sr.; his mother, Annie Lucile Fishesser Dixson; his brothers, William Nelson Dixson Jr. and Herman R. Dixson; and his sister, Margaret Dixson Hanes.
Surviving are his brother, Francis Rogers Dixson and wife Sara of Vero Beach, Fla.; his sister, Dorothy Dixson Oxenfeld and husband John of Wilmington; three sons, Ronald Alvin Dixson and wife Shelly of Lewisville, Carl Eugene Dixson Jr. and wife Lynn of Winston-Salem and Robert Morgan Dixson and wife Elizabeth of Raleigh; a granddaughter, Kelly Dixson Furr and husband James of Nashville, Tenn.; two grandsons, Philip Morgan Dixson of Winston-Salem and Matthew Woodall Dixson and wife Rebecca of Winston-Salem; a great-grandson, Andrew Philip Dixson of Winston-Salem; and three stepgrandchildren, Kevin Bradley Jessup and wife Debra of Greensboro, Brian Lee Jessup and wife Melonie of Yadkinville and Amy Diana Dalton of Lewisville.
Funeral services were held at Augsburg Lutheran Church, and committal services followed at the Mausoleum Chapel at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Allen Herman Leonard
Allen “Bud” Herman Leonard, 90, of Welcome died February 18 at the Brian Center in Winston-Salem. He was born October 19, 1912, in Davidson County to Alfred “Doc” Hayes Leonard and Maggie Sowers Leonard. He was a farmer, and had worked at Erlanger Mills and Dacotah Cotton Mills. He was a member at Center United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by brothers Cliff Leonard and Guy Leonard and sisters Ida Leonard. Margaret Swicegood, Gertrude Tilley and Dot Goodrum; and a grandson, Derek Fox.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou Leonard of the home; a son, Tex Leonard and wife Anne of Pfafftown; daughters Toby Fox and husband Bob of Welcome and Brenda Doub and husband Bobby of Pfafftown; grandchildren Len Fox, Kyle Fox, Kevin Doub and Chris Doub; great-grandchildren Bayli Fox, Peyton Fox, Carson Doub, Reagan Doub and Mason Doub; and a sister, Millie Foushee of Charlotte.
Funeral services were held at Center United Methodist Church with Rev. Clay Morgan officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Jane McClamrock Hepler Clark
Jane McClamrock Hepler Clark, 78, of Clemmons died February 19 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born in Davie County to Albert and Flossie McClamrock on August 16, 1924. She worked for Hanes Knitwear for 35 years. She was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Thomas “Ted” Hepler, and her second husband of seven years, Homer Clark; a daughter, Jean Elmore; a sister, Helen Leonard; two brothers, Calvin “Bud” McClamrock and Charlie Benjamin “Pat” McClamrock.
Surviving are two sons, Lonnie Hepler and wife Annie and Robert Hepler and wife Barbara of Advance; a daughter, Elizabeth “Liz” Dull and husband Jimmy of Clemmons; two sisters, Hazel Thomas of Winston-Salem and Gladys Hudson of Advance; a brother, John McClamrock of King; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Center Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Griggs and Rev. Otis Clampitt officiating, and burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family would like to thank Hospice & Palliative CareCenter for its excellent care and support.
Brent Lane Fendley
Brent Lane Fendley, 36, of Kernersville died February 20 at his home. He was born August 26, 1965, in Raleigh County, W.Va., a son of Bennett Hayden Fendley of Princewick, W.Va. and Betty Evans Holmes of Kernersville.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Dianna Hawkins Fendley and three sons, Adam Fendley, Michael Fendley and Jonathan Fendley, all of the home; three sisters, Barbara Fendley of King, Becky Coney of Kernersville and Beverly McKenzie of Clemmons; and two brothers, Bennett Fendley of Walkertown and Brian Fendley of Elkin.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel with Rev. David Reid officiating, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Jerry Ray Jones
Jerry Ray Jones, 68, of Rural Hall died February 17 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born November 26, 1934, in Forsyth County to Earnest Albert and Clara May Lawrence Jones. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. His parents; stepmother Etta Mae Jones; and a brother, Albert Jones, preceded him in death.
Surviving are two sons, Gregory Kent Jones and wife Vera of Rural Hall and Gordon Ray Jones and Lucy Duncan of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Aaron Keith Waller and Kristin, Rena, Karen, Sharon and Victoria Jones; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Clyde Leroy Jones and wife June of Lewisville and Glenn Allen Jones of Clemmons; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Hensley and husband Marvin of Clemmons; and a special friend, Mary J. Smith of Winston-Salem.
A memorial service was held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. A graveside service was held at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
Dora Elaine New Davis
Dora Elaine New Davis, 58, of Winston-Salem died February 20 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born April 21, 1944, to Gary Jaro and Sybil Clark New. She spent all her life in Forsyth County and was employed by Pellcare Nursing Center. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Thomas Franklin New.
Surviving are a son, Charles W. Davis Jr. of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Sherie Denise Davis of Walkertown; a grandson, Matthew William Davis; two sisters, Shirley N. Brooks of Low Gap and Patricia Ann Winfree of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Gary New Jr. of Clemmons and Curtis I. New of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown.
Conrad Roy Russell
Conrad Roy “C.R.” Russell, 86, of Thomasville died February 15 at Thomasville Medical Center. He was born September 2, 1916, in Davidson County, a son of the late Christie Royd and Miriam Conrad Russell. He was employed with Thayer-Coggin Inc. until he retired as a supervisor in 1982. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. He had a love for baseball, from being a former player with the Thomasville Hi-Toms to his many years spent coaching baseball in the Little League in Thomasville. On June 1, 1940, he was married to the former Lora Black who preceded him in death August 31, 1972.
Surviving are a son, David Conrad Russell and wife Eleanor of Clemmons; two daughters, Myra Brooks and husband Rodger of Greensboro and Janice Russell of Denton; a brother, Austin Russell of Oxford, Miss.; five grandchildren, Michele Kehoe, Suzanne Rondinone, Katie Russell, Geoffrey Brooks and Taylor Russell; a great-grandson, Devin Russell; and his loving canine companion, “Built.”
Funeral services were held at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Mike Hoffmann officiating, and burial followed at Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.
Harry Brooks Downs Jr.
Harry Brooks Downs Jr., 76, of Pfafftown died at home, surrounded by his family, on February 22. He was born May 11, 1926, the son of Harry Brooks Sr. and Florence Criner Downs of Winston-Salem. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend and faithful elder and church leader at Winston-Salem Friends Meeting. He was a dedicated supervisor at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 38 years and one whose life mattered and touched many through his example and service.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Grace Wagoner Downs; his children, John Downs and wife Kay of Greenwood, S.C., Leigh Ann Pernell and husband Jim of Pfafftown; two grandchildren, Kristen Brook McMillan and husband McMillan of Greenwood, S.C., and Whitney Brook Pernell of Pfafftown; along with many other family members and caring friends.
A memorial service was held at Winston-Salem Friends Meeting, where he was an integral part of the church’s growth and ministry. Judith Dancy and Willie Frye officiated.
Annie Lee Walsh Hartman
Annie Lee Walsh Hartman, 72, of Clemmons died July 6 at Meadowbrook Manor. She was born January 9, 1931, in Roanoke, Va., to Willard H. and Nancy Beshears Walsh. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, James Donald Hartman; a daughter, Laura Ann Hartman; a son, Larry F. Hartman; and a granddaughter, all of Clemmons; and a sister, Doris Russell and husband Roger of Yadkinville.
A graveside service was held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory with Rev. Floyd Boles officiating.
Virginia G. Shelton
Virginia G. “Genny” Shelton, 52, of Pfafftown died July 4 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
Surviving are her daughter, Tammy Shelton, and fiance; a grandson, Jalen Littlejohn; and a sister, Peggy Wyatt, all of Pfafftown.
A memorial service was held at the home.
Colleen McCoy
Colleen McCoy, 78, of Spring Hill, Fla., a former 40-year resident of Winston-Salem, died July 4. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Elizabeth Schooler.
Surviving are Parks McCoy, her husband of 60 years, also of Spring Hill; her son, Kelly McCoy of Clemmons; two daughters, Janice Sutton of Sylva and Edna Emerson of Hudson, Fla.; five grandchildren, Debra Bogart of Brandon Fla., Amy Armbruster of Winston-Salem, Amanda Watson of Salisbury, Elliot Emerson of Hudson, Fla., and Jenny Schooler of Sylva; three great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Margaret Cook, Vivian Cooke and Gladys Heath, all of Statesville and Maxine McBee of Spartanburg, S.C.
A memorial service was held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Konnoak Drive. She was buried July 8 at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.
James Goins
James Goins, 75, formerly of Yadkinville, died July 11 at Meadowbrook Manor Health Care in Clemmons. He was born August 17, 1927, in Yadkin County to the late William M. and Mozella Shore Goins. He worked with Mackie-Hinshaw-Gentry and Mackie-Gentry Funeral Home for over 40 years. He also worked with Gentry Family Funeral Home for several years. He was a member of Yadkin Lodge No. 162 AF&AM, as well as the order of the Eastern Star Chapter 233 in Yadkinville. He was an active member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem as long as his health permitted. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Margurette G. Trivette, and two brothers, Charles Edward Goins and Walter Ray Goins.
Surviving are his two brothers, Bill Goins and wife Betty of Winston-Salem and Bobby Goins and wife Doris of Angell Road, Davie County; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the Gentry Family Chapel, and burial followed at Deep Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Harriet Louise Hanes York
Harriet Louise Hanes York, 85, of Clemmons, died at her home July 11. She was born February 14, 1918, in Davie County to William Harrison and Cellie Faircloth Hanes. She was a member of Macedonia Moravian Church and retired from Hanes Hosiery. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvis Monroe York; a sister; and four brothers, including Charlie Hanes and Bill Hanes.
Surviving are a niece, Charlene Willard and husband James; four nephews, Mike Hanes and wife Jan, Kenneth Hanes and wife Brenda, Ralph Hanes and wife Dianne, and Buck Hanes and wife Linda; several nieces and nephews; a special family, Jay and Teresa Wood; a loving caregiver, Frances Jewell Steele; and many special friends.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel with Rev. Greg Little officiating, and burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
Raymond Samuel Holder
Raymond Samuel Holder, 70, of Lewisville died July 6. He was born March 20, 1933, in Forsyth County to Walter Romus and Donnie Adelene Humble Holder. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 30.8 years of service and was a member of West Bend Masonic Lodge No. 432 of Lewisville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Michael Holder.
Surviving are a son, Larry Ray Holder and wife Mary of Lewisville; a stepson, Richard Thomas Hailey and wife Carla of East Bend; a brother, Walter R. Holder Jr. and wife Florence of Westchester, Ohio; and a niece, Debbie Mader and husband Dan of Westchester, Ohio.
Funeral services were held at Concord United Methodist Church with Rev. Tom Albert officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Susan Jane Holston Masencup
Susan Jane Holston Masencup, 46, of Pfafftown died July 10 at Forsyth Medical Center after a three-year battle with cancer. She was born in Forsyth County May 25, 1957, to Billy Lee and Alice Brooks Holston Sr. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Tobaccoville, where she sang in the choir. She was an avid reader of the Bible. Susan was preceded in death by her loving mother April 8, 2000.
Surviving are her loving husband of 23 years, Mark Lee Masencup of the home; a daughter, Dana Lee Shaw and husband Ernest Shaw III of Pinnacle; a son, Marcus Adam Masencup of the home; three grandchildren, Christina Shaw, Ernest Allen Shaw IV and Bethany Shaw; her father, Billy Lee Holston Sr. of Tobaccoville; two sisters, Denise Holston and Karen McNally; two brothers, Billy Lee Holston Jr. and Daniel Holston; and several nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
A graveside service was held at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Tobaccoville.
