Ruth Miller Knott
Ruth Miller Knott, 83, died February 13 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born October 4, 1923, in Forsyth County to William Owen Miller Sr. and Maude Elizabeth Jones Miller. She worked for Hennis Freight Lines for 20 1/2 years and then for Centenary United Methodist Church for 10 years.
Surviving are a daughter, Jean Bost and husband Danny of Winston-Salem; two sons, James L. Knott and wife Sharon of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Keith D. Knott and wife Karen of Germanton; five grandchildren, Dawn B. Fields and husband Robert of Lewisville, Christina B. Cason and husband Brian of Lewisville, Andrea B. McGee and husband Travis of Winston-Salem, Justin T. Knott of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Amy M. Zimmerman of Welcome; five great-grandchildren, Austin Fields, Kelli Fields, Jeremy B. Pettite, Kobie Cason and Randall McGee; two sisters, Jewel Wilson of Greensboro and Gloria Melton and husband Broadus of Winston-Salem; and a brother, William O. Miller and wife Lib of Tobaccoville.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Hall with Rev. Jonathan Freeman officiating. Burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park.

Joanne Mae Barr
Joanne Mae Barr, 43, of Pfafftown died February 11 after a 2 1/2 -year battle with brain cancer. She was the third and youngest child born to George Lee Smith and Nancy Lee Parker Smith. She was born at Kincheloe AFB in Sault Saint Marie, Mich., on May 8, 1963. She married her husband, John, on July 7, 1989. She worked at Walt Disney World, Sea World and a jewelry store before becoming a full-time mother. She home-schooled her two sons, Connor and Andrew, until becoming ill. She loved to garden and remodel her home. She did volunteer work at the boys’ schools and Boy Scout Troop and Pack No. 918, where she served as committee chairperson.
Surviving are her husband of 16 years, John E. Barr; sons Connor Patrick and Andrew John of the home; mother Nancy L. Smith, father George L. Smith, and stepmother Shirley Smith, all of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; brothers David Smith and wife Paula of Tulsa, Okla., James Smith and wife Lisa, and Karen Smith, all of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; many nieces and nephews, including two great-nieces; the entire Barr family; and her best friend, Diane Hartman of Orlando, Fla.
A funeral Mass was held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons. Memorials may be made to BSA Troop or Pack No. 918, 5991 Skylark Road, Pfafftown, NC 27040.

Clara Mae Pardue Gabard
Clara Mae Pardue Gabard, 87, of Winston-Salem died February 18 at The Elms at Tanglewood. She was born in Boonville on May 14, 1919, the daughter of Henry Fletcher and Cora Emma Robertson Pardue. She was employed by Security Life and Trust Co. for several years. After taking a few years to devote to her family, she became a member of the teaching staff of Winsalm College where she remained until her retirement. She was a member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church and remained active as long as her health permitted. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Evangeline Drane.
Surviving are her husband Clarence W. Gabard, whom she married on April 5, 1942; a daughter, Carol Dianne Combs and husband Reginald of Lewisville; two sons, Kenneth A. Gabard and wife Deborah of Ithaca, N.Y., and Donald L. Gabard of Los Angeles, Calif.; four grandchildren, Emily and Ed Combs and Laurel and Anna Clare Gabard-Durham; a special nephew and niece, Bobby and Joyce Gabard; and several other nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park with the Rev. Hal Cole officiating.

Bettie Jean Dodson
Bettie Jean Dodson, 59, died February 15 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a battle with cancer. She was born November 21, 1947, to John Wesley and Laura Lee Brown Dodson in Stokes County. She was a Moravian, had been the assistant manager at the Dairi-O, and was known as a hardworking lady who enjoyed playing bingo. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and three brothers.
Surviving are three children, Marty Vaden and wife Susan of Lewisville, David Willard and wife Sharon of Raleigh and Angel Willard and husband Gene Wilkins of Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren, Taylor, Chase and Summer Vaden, Kiley, Karsen and Trent Willard, Dagan and Darion Wilkins; a brother, Charlie Dodson of Rural Hall; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Fulp Moravian Church with Rev. Dan Nelson officiating. Burial followed in Boyles Chapel Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Martha Ann Beasley McCollem
Martha Ann Beasley McCollem, 64, of Kernersville died February 15 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born May 2, 1942, in Guilford County to the late William Bryant and Nina Pearl Brooks Beasley. She was a member of Smith Grove Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rosco Charles McCollem, a sister and a brother.
Surviving are two sons, Richard Lee Young and wife Janet of Asheboro and William Marshall Young of Belews Creek; a granddaughter, Brandy Michelle Young; three sisters, Juanita Linville and husband Dutch of Harkers Island, Shirley Mae Shoffner of Mocksville and Bonnie Fay Quick of Kernersville; and two brothers, A.C. Beasley of Conway, S.C., and Douglas Fetzer Beasley of Lewisville.
Funeral services were held at Smith Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Chuck Peters and Rev. Bruce Freeman officiating. Burial followed in Eastlawn Gardens of Memory.

Camilla Beamon Loftin
Camilla Beamon Loftin, 71, formerly of Advance, died February 17 at Silas Creek Manor in Winston-Salem. She was born November 22, 1935, in Yadkin County to the late Cecil and Octavia Church Beamon. She was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. She was previously residing at the Jewish Home in Clemmons. She enjoyed crocheting. Sje was preceded in death by a brother, David Beamon.
Surviving are two brothers, Frank Beamon and Jim Beamon; a special cousin, Mildred Spry of Advance; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Advance Baptist Church with Chaplain Fred Moretz officiating.

Sylvia Ragsdale Clark
Sylvia Ragsdale Clark, 68, of Clemmons died April 12 following a battle with acute myeloid leukemia. She was born January 16, 1939, to the late N.D. and Rea Ragsdale. She was an active member of Antioch Baptist Church, where she served as Treasurer for more than 30 years and held various other positions. She retired from the Translations Group at AT&T in 1995. She was preceded in death by her husband, W.T. “Bill” Clark; sisters, Louise Stafford, Mary Nell Niday and Geneva Ragsdale; and brother, Paul Ragsdale, along with an infant brother.
Surviving are her two daughters, Deana Lyons and husband Rodney of Winston-Salem and Tonya Rene and husband Mark of New Hampshire; three grandchildren, Katrina Lyons Darr and husband Rodney Darr, Justin Lyons and Carson Rene; four sisters, Josephine Hauser, Edith Lakey, Betty Stonestreet and Thelma Ragsdale; and a brother, Willie Ragsdale.
Funeral services were held at Antioch Baptist Church with Pastor Dwight Haynes, Rev. Neal Eller and Rev. Steve Welborn officiating. Burial followed at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Antioch Baptist Church, 910 Palmer Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27107.

Bettie Ellen Billings Foster
Bettie Ellen Billings Foster, 81, of Winston-Salem died April 12 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born May 12, 1925, in West Bend to Frank and Lillie Dalton Billings. She was married to Thomas Henry Foster in 1945. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Rheta Foster; a sister, Nettie Carter; and a brother, Henry Billings.
Surviving are two daughters, Ruth Hamby and husband Tim of Statesville and Bonnie Warren of Statesville; three sons, Lloyd Foster of the home, T. Vernon Foster and wife Jennifer of Winston-Salem and Randy Foster and wife Lynn of Statesville; grandchildren, Chad Foster and wife Erin of Clemmons, Chris Foster of Clemmons, Matthew Foster of Winston-Salem, David Foster and wife Amber of Clemmons, Taylor and Alexandra Foster of Winston-Salem, Stephanie Foster of Statesville, Terrance Hamby and wife Alida of Statesville, and Timothy Hamby of Statesville; great-granddaughter, Isabella Hamby; two sisters, Francis Allgood and husband Herman and Flora Moore; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Immanuel Baptist Church in Clemmons. Memorials may be made to the N. C. Stroke Association, 409 S. Hawthorne Rd., Winston-Salem, NC.

Col. Harold L. Coleman
Col. Harold L. Coleman, 82, of Clemmons died April 12 at his home. He was born June 16, 1924, in Wayne County, Mich., to Venus York and Gaither Melvin Coleman. He was a member of Fairview Moravian Church and served in U.S. Naval Aviation in World War II, where he was a gun air school instructor and a link trainer. He was the owner and operator of the original franchise, Coleman’s Take Home Kentucky Fried Chicken, from 1962 to 1984, the original franchise for Wendy’s, both in Forsyth County, and the original franchise for H. Salt Fish & Chips. Before his franchise, he operated Forsyth Fish Camp in Walkertown. He was a member of Salem Lodge 289, where he was a Master Mason, a member of Oasis Temple of the Shrine-York Rite, a member of the Winston-Salem Shrine Club and an Honorable Kentucky Colonel given to him by the Governor of Kentucky through Col. Harland Sanders. He was a Tennessee Squire under the Jack Daniels Distillery in Lynchburg, Tenn. He was owner of several world champion Tennessee Walking horses.
Surviving are his wife, Hazel Burris Coleman of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Debra Coleman of Clemmons and Shelbyville, Tenn., and Dianne C. Yarbrough of Bethabara; a son, Scott Coleman and wife Jan of Little River, S.C.; five grandchildren, Richard and Amy Yarbrough, Crissy and Anastasia Coleman and Stephanie Wall Priddy; seven great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
A graveside service was held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons with Rev. Reddick Webber and Rev. Norwood Green officiating. Memorials may be made to The American Diabetes. Evelyn Binkley Spainhour
Evelyn Binkley Spainhour, 93, of Winston-Salem died April 13 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Forsyth County on April 11, 1914, to the late Willie and Lena Boger Binkley. She was a member of Ardmore Moravian Church. She loved working in the yard and growing award-winning roses. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alton; brothers, Bill, Richard and Glenn, and sisters, Doris Binkley, Stella Weatherman and Louise Parks.
Surviving are her two children, Ronald Spainhour of New York City and Carolyn Spainhour of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Sue Hughes of Winston-Salem and Ruby Pope of Clemmons; a brother, Kenneth Binkley of Hickory; three sisters-in-law, Hazel Binkley and Hilma Binkley, both of Winston-Salem and Catherine Binkley of Hickory; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Kevin Frack officiating. Burial followed in the Salem Moravian Graveyard.

Sherry Lynn Colvard
Sherry Lynn Colvard 49, of Clemmons died April 14 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a 13-year battle with cancer. She was born August 13, 1957, in Watauga County to Bobby Neal Colvard and Joyce Norris Colvard. She was a former employee of Medical Park Hospital for 18 years.
Surviving in addition to her mother are a son, Taylor Moore of the home; and a daughter, Meredith Briley and husband Patrick of Lillington.
Funeral services were held at Reedy Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Egbert Craven officiating. Memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or Davidson County Cancer Services, 503 W. Center St., Lexington, NC 27292.

Greta Hoots Craft
Greta Hoots Craft, 48, of Supply died unexpectedly April 11 at her home. She was born December 3, 1958, in Winston-Salem to Lura and Corbett Hoots. She spent her childhood in Lewisville, several years in Charlotte and in New York, returning to the Winston-Salem area in the early ‘90s. She worked for House Matters in Winston-Salem for several years before relocating to the N.C. coast four years ago and starting her own business, Sunshine Cleaners. Her many friends knew her by her nickname, “Sunny,” which was a direct reflection of her personality and the inspiration for her business name. She had a great joy of life and loved all animals, especially her cats. She loved riding her motorcycle. She was preceded in death by her father.
Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, Mike Craft of Supply, formerly of Lewisville; her daughter, Amber Williams of Lexington, Ky.; a granddaughter, Kali Vance of New Orleans, La.; a sister, Janice McCoy and husband Jim of Lewisville; a brother, Roger Hoots and wife Judy of Kernersville; two nephews, Scott Hoots and Jeff Adams; seven great-nieces and great-nephews; and many friends.
A memorial service was held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel in Winston-Salem.

Doris Elizabeth Lanning Long
Doris Elizabeth Lanning Long, 81, of Lexington died April 13 at Forsyth Medical Center after a sudden illness. She was born June 8, 1925, in Davidson County to William Howard Lanning and Blanche Craver Lanning. She worked for Erlanger Mills, Duracell and later for the YMCA in Lexington. She was an active member of Ladies Auxiliary of A-RC-H Fire and Rescue. She was a member of Arcadia Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Long; and her sons, Ralph Wayne Long, Raeford Layne Long and E.J. Long.
Surviving are a son, Joe Long and wife Donna of Lexington; a daughter-in-law, Betty Sowers Long Rogers and husband John of Winston-Salem; a brother, Tommy Lanning and wife Kathy of Lexington; a sister, Jean Lanning Hill and husband Carlton of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Amy Long, Jeff Long and wife Wendy, Cassandra Long and Megan Long; a niece, Carla Hill Warrick and husband Will; her nephews, Lance Lanning and wife Shawn, Keith Lanning and wife Dee, and Derek Hill and wife Jessica; nephew Richard Long; other nieces and nephews; and her great-nieces and great-nephews, Jordan and Blake Lanning, Karlee Lanning, Matthew and Morgan Warrick and Peyton and Anna Hill.
Funeral services were held at Arcadia Church of Christ with Bobby Leonard, Sam Crews and Tony Morrison officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Cathy Lynn Cope Harper
Cathy Lynn Cope Harper, 48, of Morehead City died April 8 at Carteret General Hospital. She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Virgil Motsinger.
Surviving are a son, William Harper of Morehead City; her mother, Jo Ann Huff Motsinger of Morehead City; her father, Arnold Cope and wife Jacqueline of Sea Gate; sisters, Kimberly Cope and Lisa Cope of Alexandria, Va.; stepsister Cathy Motsinger of Clemmons; several aunts, uncles, cousins, stepbrothers and stepsisters; and a former husband, Tim Harper of Morehead City.
A graveside service was held at Union Cross Moravian Church Cemetery in Kernersville with Rev. Dennis Conner officiating.

Joan Pierce Throckmorton
Joan Pierce Throckmorton, 63, of Winston-Salem died April 14 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a long battle with cancer. She was born December 7, 1943, in High Point to Harry Pierce and Vera M. Skeen. She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Lindsay W. Throckmorton.
Surviving are a daughter, Traci Petree and husbaand Chip Clemmons; a son, Gary Throckmorton and wife Renee of Winston-Salem; her grandchildren, Jock and Anna Gray Petree of Clemmons and Gus and Cooper Throckmorton of Winston-Salem; her brothers and their families, Mike and Jeannie Pierce of High Point and Roger and Sandy Skeen of Greenwood, S.C.; her mother-in-law, Hazel Throckmorton; and a special aunt, Helen Throckmorton.
A memorial service was held at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Hall with Rev. Jerry Pardew officiating.

Ethel Griggs Hughes
Ethel Griggs Hughes, 84, of Walkertown died April 14 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born to Max and Verna Griggs in 1923. She was a member of Loves Methodist Church in Walkertown. She was a member of the Hanes Hosiery National Championship Basketball team. Her cakes won her many blue ribbons at the Dixie Classic Fair. She loved to do crafts and donate them to schools and other organizations.
Surviving are her son, Mike Hughes and wife Lynne of Kernersville; daughter Patsy Hughes of Walkertown; granddaughter Brittany Antunez and husband Anthony of Kernersville; brother Howard Griggs of Tulsa, Okla.; and sisters Trudy Hushbeck of Carson City, Nev., Opal Bovender and husband Clyde of Clemmons and Ruth Church of Walkertown.
A graveside service was held at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown with Rev. James Webb officiating.

Friedrich Isaac Shoaf
Friedrich Isaac Shoaf, 87, of Clemmons died April 30 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born April 20, 1920, in Forsyth County to Fred W. and Dona Cook Shoaf. He was retired from Western Electric after 33 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Agnes Poplin Shoaf, whom he married March 30, 1940.
Surviving are four children, Diane Hubbard and husband Eddie, Franz C. Shoaf and wife Ana, Paul F. Shoaf and wife Brenda, and Gina Shoaf; three grandsons, Will and Matt Hubbard and Michael Shoaf; two great-grandchildren, Haley and Joshua Hubbard; and a special friend, Sudie Mackie.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Arkon Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Wade Wingate Wishon
Wade Windgate Wishon, 82, of Clemmons died April 30 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born August 2, 1924, in Forsyth County to Arthur Edgar and Annie Motsinger Wishon. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church where he was a song leader for 25 years, a trustee and a member of the Building Committee. He retired from Leonard Oil Co. with 42 years of loyal service. His passion in life was his family and his farm.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Cordelia “Pat” Nifong Wishon of the home; a son, David W. Wishon of New York, N.Y.; two daughters, Nada W. Moore and husband Jack of Walkertown and Mary Ann W. Burchette and husband Neil of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Jeramie W. Burchette and wife Lisa, Joseph P. Burchette, Haley L. Moore and Lacy A. Moore; and two sisters, Jean W. Smith of Winston-Salem and Martha W. Calcutt of Pinnacle.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Neil Wilcox and Rev. Scott Wilkerson officiating. Burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory. Memorials may be made to Winston-Salem Rescue Mission, 717 Oak St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

Janie Hege Douthit
Janie Hege Douthit, 88, of Clemmons, widow of Joseph Edgar Douthit, died May 1 at her home. She was born July 5, 1918, in Halls Ferry to Felix Wellington and Janie Hall Hege. She lived most of her life in Clemmons. She was a graduate of Clemmons High School and attended Draughon’s Business School. She was employed by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 36 years, retiring in 1975. She was a member of Clemmons Moravian Church where she served as organist for many years. She was preceded in death by a brother, Felix C. Hege.
Funeral services were held at Clemmons Moravian Church, with Rev. Q. Ray Burke officiating. Burial followed in the church graveyard. Memorials may be made to Clemmons Moravian Church.

Genevieve Williams Boyd
Genevieve Williams Boyd, 92, of Clemmons Village II died May 3 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born in Johnson City, Tenn., on October 31, 1914, the daughter of Argil B. Williams and Mae Daniel Williams. She married George Edgar Boyd of Erwin, Tenn., in 1937. She was a member of Enon Baptist Church of Yadkin County where she was a former Sunday school teacher and choir member. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1989.
Surviving are a daughter, Judith Boyd Huttar of East Bend; a son, Michael Boyd and wife Gina of Cooleemee; a daughter, Cynthia Boyd Graves and husband Glenn of Gretna, Va.; a granddaughter, Annette Huttar Benson and husband Tim of Aiken, S.C.; a grandson, Daniel Huttar and wife Mary of Lawsonville; a granddaughter, Janice Huttar of Clemmons; a grandson, Shawn Boyd and wife Michelle of Lincoln Calif.; a granddaughter, Heather Boyd Wilhelm and husband Tracy of Washington; a grandson, Brian Graves and wife Beth Honeycutt of Chapel Hill; a grandson, Mark Ardrey-Graves and wife Sara of Raleigh; a granddaughter, Jennifer Graves of Gretna; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Enon Baptist Church. Donations may be made to Enon Baptist Church Building Fund, 6321 E. Old Highway 421, East Bend, NC 27018.

Leona Jones Hundley
Leona Jones Hundley, 78, of Clemmons died May 3 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born August 24, 1928, in Forsyth County to Paul and Sarah Jane Elizabeth Harper Jones. She was a member of Boyer’s Chapel Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Pauline Tate.
Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Payseur and husband Robert of Greensboro; a son, William Hundley of Asheville; four grandchildren, Coral Thorarinson, Robert David Payseur, Michael Hundley and Shara Hundley; a great-grandchild, Lauren Brianna Thorarinson; and three sisters, Marjorie Frye, Frances Foltz and Barbara Wilmoth.
A graveside service was held at Boyer’s Chapel Church of Christ with James Percival officiating.
