Carol T. Woodruff
Carol T. Woodruff, 70, of Myrtle Beach, S.C. died December 26 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. She was born November 24, 1936, in Forsyth County, a daughter of the late John W. and Ada Coggins Tise. She was an avid quilter. Her joy in life was her family and friends.
Surviving are her husband of more than 50 years, Frank Woodruff of Myrtle Beach; a son, Dan Woodruff of Aventura, Fla.; a brother, Donald Tise of Sanford, Fla.; a sister, Jean T. Livengood of Clemmons; and two grandchildren, Melissa Gries of Washington, D.C., and Bruce Woodruff of Jupiter, Fla.
A memorial service was held at McMillan-Small Funeral Home with Dr. J. Kirk Lawton Jr. officiating.
Nolie M. Boland
Nolie M. Boland, 92, of The Oaks in Elon, and formerly of Graham, died at the Hospice & Palliative CareCenter of Alamance-Caswell on December 26. A native of Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Robert Hill McClain and Rosa Mae Petty McClain, both deceased.
Surviving are two daughters, June Carol Jackson of Burlington and Patricia Maloy and husband Don of Clemmons; two grandchildren, Jessica Ward and husband, R.J. of Burlington and Nathan Maloy of Winston-Salem; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Long and husband Vernon of Burlington.
Funeral services were held at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington with Rev. Howard Thompson officiating. Burial followed in Pine Hill Cemetery.
Richard Harlow Bruce
Richard Harlow Bruce, 75, of Lewisville died December 23 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born on July 29, 1931, in Cleveland, Ohio, to George and Ruthe Bruce and grew up in Conneaut, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and was an accountant by trade. He served as CFO of Superior Cable in Hickory and then opened Fireplace Shops of Charlotte and Winston-Salem. He loved spending time with his family, time on the water, with his daughter Beth and her horses and his grandsons.
Surviving are his wife, Sara Aycock Bruce, whom he married in 1953; daughters Mindy Engstrom and husband David of Winston-Salem and Beth Stiles and husband James of Mooresboro; grandsons Adam and Eric Engstrom of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Donald Bruce and wife Joan of Conneaut, Ohio.
A memorial service was held at Sharon United Methodist Church in Lewisville with Rev. Marilyn Weiler officiating. Eva Lorraine Conley Deal
Eva Lorraine Conley Deal, 80, of Mocksville died December 27 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born in Giles County, Va., on June 3, 1926, the daughter of William B. and Nora Burton Conley. She was a member of Union Chapel Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy S. Deal, and sons Richard W. and Lester S. Deal.
Surviving are her son, Robert L. Deal of Clemmons; her daughter, Sylvia Davis of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; sisters Margie Taber of Blacksburg, Va., Janice Deal of Winston-Salem and Evelyn Conley of Springhill, Fla.; grandchildren Angela O;Connell of Madison, Ga., Jordan Deal of Clemmons, Adam Deal of Mocksville, Stephanie Steele of Mocksville, Randy Deal of Lexington, Joey Deal of Virginia Beach, Va., Tammy Presnell of Lexington, Sharron Hege of Lexington and Todd and Charles Sanders, both of Winston-Salem; and great-grandchildren Kyle and Nicholas O’Connell of Madison, Ga., Colten and Cyler Presnell of Lexington, Brad and Tad Deal of Lexington, Dylan Holland of Tyro, Cody and Carley Deal of Virginia Beach, Va., and Sierra Deal of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. George Burton officiating. Burial followed at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
William Henry Smith
William Henry Smith, 88, of Clemmons died December 29 at Clemmons Village. He was born December 15, 1918, in Forsyth County to William L. and Nannie Riddle Smith. He was a member of Clemmons First Baptist Church and was retired from R. J. Reynolds with 39 years of service. He had a love of tractors and old farm equipment, and was a member of the Winston-Salem Knife Club. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Estelle Anderson Smith, in 2002, and two sisters, Flora S. Williams and Martha S. Boner.
Surviving are a son, William A. “Tony” Smith and wife Joann of Raleigh; two daughters, Debbie Baity and husband I.H. of Winston-Salem and Becky Hoyos of Clemmons; three grandchildren, Sabrina Davis, Barrett Smith and Emilio Hoyos; and five great-grandchildren, Logan, Michael, Whitley, Hanna and Grayson.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with Dr. Robby Phillips officiating. Burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
Luther Gray Tucker
Luther Gray Tucker, 79, of Clemmons died December 27 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born December 11, 1927, in Forsyth County to John Wesley Tucker and Gertrude Poe Tucker. He was a truck driver for Roadway. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by his father and two sisters, Ruby Shook and Pauline Disher.
Surviving are two sons, Barry Tucker of Clemmons and Darren Tucker and wife Tina of Welcome; a daughter, Beverly Shinault and husband Larry of Germanton; his mother, Gertrude Poe Tucker; three grandchildren, Larry Shinault Jr., Brandi Peoples and Justin Tucker; three great-grandchildren, Wesley Shinault, Aby Shinault and Logan Koontz; and two brothers, William Tucker of Winston-Salem and Jimmy Tucker of Yadkinville.
Funeral services were held at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel with Rev. Bill Norris officiating. Burial followed at the National Cemetery in Salisbury with military graveside rites by Memorial Honor Guard.
Jean Byrd Royall
Jean Byrd Royall, 79, of Elkin died December 29 at Select Specialty Hospital at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born December 24, 1927, in Yadkin County to Robert and Cora Shaffner Byrd. She was a homemaker and a member of Elkin First United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Eddie Royall; and a brother, Wayne Byrd.
Surviving are her husband, Edwin Royall of the home; a son, Robbie Royall of Elkin; four daughters, Jane Royall of Taylorsville, Clara Martin and husband Max of Taylorsville. Carole Bodenhamer and husband Hal of Clemmons and Sara Royall Hemric of North Wilkesboro; two brother, Bud Byrd and wife Nancy and Bill Byrd and wife Peggy, all of Jonesville; six grandchildren, Cynthia Eldred, Darlis Martin, Damy Bair, Jessa Bodenhamer, Jacob Hemric and Ethan Hemric; and five great-grandchildren, Aura Royall, Saige Eldred, Ansen Eldred, Brandon Bair and Carly Bair.
A graveside service was held at Hollywood Cemetery with Dr. Charles Baker Jr. officiating.
Herman Johnson Spillman
Herman Johnson “John” Spillman, 76, of Advance died December 30 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born August 30, 1930, in Yadkin County. He was a member of Green Meadows Baptist Church and a veteran of the Korean War.
Surviving are his wife, Hope Howell Spillman of the home; a sister, Annette Hobson and husband Lawrence of Clemmons; two brothers, B.C. Spillman and wife Ruth of Yadkinville and Calvin Spillman and wife Dee of Winston-Salem; and a special nephew, Dale Gray Howell.
A graveside service was held at Green Meadows Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Waters and Rev. Kenneth Hyde officiating. military rites were conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard.
Harold George Koach
Harold George Koach, 87, of Advance died December 30 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born October 1, 1919, in Ellwood City, Pa., to the late Harry P. and Ethel W. Koach and had moved to North Carolina in 1986, becoming the hospital administer at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, a position he held until 1985. He was a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. After working at Binghamton New York General Hospital and Wyckoff Heights Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y., he moved his family to Pfafftown where he continued his hospital- administration career and started a gentleman-farmer life. He was active in the N.C. Hospital Association, Kiwanis Club, Crisis Control, Meals on Wheels and American Red Cross. He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul E. Koach; and stepsister Frances Currie.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Mary O’Leary Koach of Bermuda Village, Advance; three daughters, Kathy Coghill and husband Jim of Clemmons, Colleen Berson and husband Jeffrey of Farmington Hills, Mich., and Debbie Cranford and husband Jim of Durham; a son, Jack Koach and wife Jennifer of Kiawah Island, S.C.; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three sisters of Pennsylvania, Ethel Mae Sorcio, Mary Lou Eonta and Nancy Lee Perschke and husband Edward.
A funeral Mass was held at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Winston-Salem with Father Thomas J. Kessler officiating. Burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Forsyth Medical Center Foundation Palliative Care Unit, 3333 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Osborne Edward Propst
Osborne Edward Propst, 88, of Hickory died December 30 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. He was born April 10, 1918, in Catawba County to the late Herbert and Jenny Bumgarner Propst. He was retired from the furniture industry and was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Louise Miller Propst; a great-granddaughter, Abby Kanupp; a brother, Harold L. Propst; and a sister, Ruth Moser.
Surviving are daughters Jane C. Propst of Clemmons and Linda Kanupp and husband Paul of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; grandsons Jeffrey Kanupp and wife Clara of Conover; Matthew Kanupp and wife Elaine of Dallas, N.C.; great-granddaughter McKenzie Frietch, also of Dallas; sisters Betty Echerd of Hickory, Dorothy Postove of Clearwater, Fla.; brother-in-law Glenn Moser of Hickory; and sister-in-law Elizabeth Propst of Hickory.
A memorial service was held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hickory with Rev. Dr. James Stephenson officiating. A private graveside service was held in Oakwood Cemetery.
Betty W. Whicker
Betty W. Whicker, 75, of Kernersville died December 31 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born November 20, 1931, in Forsyth County to the late Robert and Gertrude Fulp West. She retired from R.J. Reynolds Research and Development with 37 years of service. She was a lifelong active member of Morris Chapel United Methodist Church, on the board and a member of Walkertown Outreach Ministries. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ray W. West; and a sister, Sarah Ruth Vance.
Surviving are her husband, Donald G. Whicker of the home; three daughters, Sandra Mickler and husband Joe and Beverly Shepard and husband Mike, both of Winston-Salem, and Sarah Kiger and husband Ricky of Clemmons; a sister, Kathleen Joyce of Kernersville; seven grandchildren, Jessica Mickler of Winston-Salem, Trey Mickler and wife Melanie of Atlanta, Ga., Paige Jenkins and husband Jonathan of Chesterfield, Va., Adam Tingen and wife Suzanne of Woodstock, Ga., and Allison Grimes and husband Allen, Weston Hafkey and Hannah Kiger, all of Clemmons; six great-grandchildren, Caleb and Lily Tingen, both of Woodstock, Kate and Hannah Mickler, both of Atlanta, and Peyton and Luke Jenkins, both of Chesterfield; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held at Morris Chapel United Methodist Church in Walkertown with Rev. Harold Schwantes and Rev. Christopher Henson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Richard Taylor Westmoreland
Richard Taylor Westmoreland, 80, of Winston-Salem died December 25 at Mallard Ridge Assisted Living. He was born March 12, 1926, in Iredell County to George and Luna Overcash Westmoreland. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of Friedberg Moravian Church. He had retired from McLean Trucking Co. with a safe driving record of 32 years and was a three-term Past Master of Piedmont Masonic Lodge 711. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Agnes.
Surviving are his wife, Iris Westmoreland of the home; three daughters, Teresa Spears of Winston-Salem, Cecilia Cook and husband Freddie of Lexington and Patricia Hester and husband Mike of Lewisville; two sons, Rick Westmoreland and wife Cathy of Reidsville, and Thomas “Billy” Burns and wife Sheila of Germanton; seven grandchildren, Dawn Spears, Melissa and Emily Westmoreland, Michael Hester, Amanda Cook, Karen Ancuta and Keegan Burns; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Catherine Davis; and a brother, George Westmoreland.

Helen Scott McCall
Helen Scott McCall, 84, of Lenoir died January 1 at her residence. She was born April 11, 1922, in Johnson City, Tenn., to the late Howard and Violet Thomas Scott. She was a homemaker and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lenoir. She was a past president of Cedar Rock Ladies Golf Association and was the first lady to score a hole-in-one on that course. She also was a member of the Community Music Club and Lenoir Woman’s Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James H. McCall Jr., to whom she was married for 57 years.
Surviving are two sons, James H. McCall III and wife Janie of Taylorsville and William S. McCall and wife Tami of Charlotte; a daughter, Patricia Carlton and husband Thomas of Clemmons; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held at First Presbyterian Church of Lenoir with Rev. Robert F. Hinman officiating.
Doris Katherine Gore Kohfeldt
Doris Katherine Gore Kohfeldt, 88, of Clemmons died February 16 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She was born September 29, 1918, in Trenton, N.J., to Joseph F. Gore Sr. and Naoma Watson Gore. She was married to Robert Kohfeldt on February 17, 1940, who preceded her in death on November 2, 1986. She was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Epiphany. In her younger years, she was a full-time homemaker and mother. She did not work outside of the home until both of her children were out of high school. Her first outside jobs were as a teacher’s assistant and teacher for developmentally disabled children in Kalamazoo, Mich. Later she worked as a computer keypunch operator for an insurance company in Wayne, N.J., for six years. During her final 40 years, she was a part of IESS. She was a co-owner of IESS Inc. with her daughter, Joyce. At 88 years old, she continued to work in the business. At work she answered the phone, helped people select materials, checked out customers and worked on accounts receivables. She also liked to go to conferences, assisting in giving presentations and selling materials. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and brothers, Richard Gore and Joseph Gore Jr.
Surviving are her daughter, Doris Joyce Kohfeldt; a son, Richard Robert Kohfeldt; a granddaughter, Shelly Lynn Kohfeldt Keyzer; and two great-grandchildren, Jake Converse and Madelyn Converse.
Funeral services were held at Vogler and Sons Clemmons Chapel with Rev. Stephen Gerhard officiating. Burial followed at Westlawn Memorial Gardens.
Eve Morgan MacLeod
Eve Morgan MacLeod died at 24 weeks gestation and was born on January 11.
Surviving are her twin brother, Ezekiel Thomas MacLeod; her mother, Jennifer; and her father, Tom, all of Clemmons.
A graveside memorial service was held at Parklawn Memorial Park with Dr. Howard Wilburn officiating.
Eugene Owens
Eugene “Gene” Owens, 78, of Clemmons died February 18 at Forsyth Medical Center, after an illness of two months. He was born June 6, 1928, to Claude Scott Owens and Viola Koontz Owens. He was the retired owner of Owens Construction. He was a faithful member of Marler Road Baptist Church in Hamptonville and a member of the Auditorium Sunday school class for 6 1/2 years as long as his health permitted. Before that, he was a member of Spruce Street Baptist Church in Lexington for some 30 years with Brother Noah Frye and went on mission trips with him to Haiti. He enjoyed gardening, camping, and gospel singing, especially with his special friends, the Primitive Quartet and the Narrow Way Quartet. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nellie Mae Williams Owens; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Surviving are his wife, Elsie George Owens of the home; sons Kenneth Gene Owens and wife Debbie of Thomasville and Paul Wayne Owens and wife Jeannie of Asheboro; daughters Diane Owens Myers and husband Ken and Pamela Owens Sipes, both of Thomasville; stepsons Larry Merritt and wife Lynn of Clemmons, Michael Merritt and wife Linda of King, Tony Merritt of King, Jimmy Merritt and wife Diane of Advance, Ronnie Merritt of Winston Salem and Donnie Merritt of Walnut Cove; stepdaughter Susan Goad of Clemmons; eight grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; brothers Donald Owens and wife Joan of High Point, Ronnie Owens of Fuquay Varina, Gary Owens and wife Darlene of Thomasville, and Danny Owens and wife Candi of Lexington; and sisters Daisy Mae Proctor and husband Ronnie of High Point, Shirley Comer and husband Steve of Lexington and Margaret Kanoy and husband Roy of Thomasville.
Funeral services were held at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel in Lexington with Pastor Randy Johnson, Rev. Noah Frye and Pastor Terry Coats officiating. Burial followed in Forest Hill Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Kay Jay Conrad
Kay Jay Conrad, 86, of Lewisville died February 13 at W.G. Hefner V.A. Medical Center in Salisbury. Born June 20, 1920, in Forsyth County, he was the son of the late Kapp Jacob and Hattie Sheets Conrad. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force from 1941 to 1967, he served his country during World War II, and in Korea and Vietnam. He retired as staff sergeant. He owned and operated his own shoe-repair shop in Winston-Salem. He loved to fly airplanes and hunt with his son and grandsons. A member of Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, he was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Winston-Salem.
Surviving are his wife, Jeraleen York Conrad; son Jay York Conrad of Lewisville; daughter Judith Anne Smyre of Charlotte; and grandchildren Jacob York Conrad and Austin Blake Conrad, and their mother, Denise Conrad, and Elizabeth Anne Smyre.
Funeral services were held at Summersett Memorial Chapel in Salisbury with Rev. Dr. Gary D. Chapman, senior associate pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Burial followed in U.S. National Cemetery, Statesville Boulevard Location, with military honors conducted by Pope Air Force Base. Richard Junior Myers
Richard Junior Myers, 74, died February 12 at Clemmons Nursing and Rehabilitation. He was born April 13, 1932, in Davidson County, to the late George Richard and Irene Elizabeth Starbuck Myers. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and was member of Elbaville United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean conflict and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War in Advance. He enjoyed working with wood, making violins and enjoyed fishing. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Myers and Rosa Lee Carroll, and two brothers, Garland Myers and Donnie Myers.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Ann Myers Myers of the home; a daughter, Becky Lyons and husband Gene of Mount Airy; two sons, Tommy Myers and wife Lori of Advance and Steve Myers and wife Trish of Mocksville; a sister, Lula Mae Starr of Mocksville; a brother, James Myers of Mocksville; four grandchildren, Westley Myers, Joshua Myers, Ross Lyons and Brandon Lyons; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Elbaville United Methodist Church with Rev. Karl Kelly and Rev. Jimmy Myers officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by the 11th District Memorial Honor Guard.
Joseph Garrott Browder
Joseph “Joe” Garrott Browder, 84, died February 12 in Winston-Salem. He was born December 23, 1922, in Danville, Va., and raised in Charlotte. His military career began in 1946 in the Public Works Department of the Naval Shipyard, Charleston, S.C. After being in the ready reserves with two weeks active duty every year for 35 years on various military bases, he retired with the rank of lieutenant commander from the Civil Engineers Corps of the U.S. Navy Reserves in 1982. As a civil engineer with design skills, he worked as assistant bridge engineer with Southern Railway System from 1947 until 1964, at which time he became the superintendent/project manager/division chief engineer/site manager for McDevitt & Street Co., from which he retired in 1992. The various projects on which he worked during his career are the Bank of America headquarters tower in Charlotte; Tampa International Airport; the basketball coliseums in Greensboro, Columbia, S.C., Morgantown W.Va., Charlottesville and Hampton in Virginia; major hospitals in North Carolina, including Rex, Union, Forsyth, N.C. Baptist, Wesley Long, Presbyterian and Mercy hospitals in Charlotte; three public-housing projects in Charlotte; Providence Country Club in Charlotte; Wachovia’s 40-story tower in Winston-Salem; Snow Shoe, W.Va., ski lodge, slopes, equipment and road access; and the Prague Baptist Seminary in the Czech Republic in 1995, which was the world’s largest all-volunteer job. He participated in several projects for Habitat for Humanity and the Hearts and Hammers group in Huntersville. He was a member of 10 professional organizations: American military Engineers, American Railway Engineers Association, American Railway Bridge and Building Association, American Concrete Institute, Professional Construction Estimators and was awarded life membership in Charlotte Engineers Club, American Society of Civil Engineers, Construction Specification Institute, the Retired Officer Association and the Fleet Reserve Association. He was a longtime member of St. John’s Baptist Church in Charlotte, where he served as youth minister, deacon and chairman of the church’s House and Grounds Committee. In his later life, he was a member of Park Road Baptist Church in Charlotte and most recently attended Ardmore Baptist Church in Winston-Salem.
Surviving are his wife, Carlotta R. Browder of Charlotte; his four children, Dr. Donna Browder Moyer of Lewisville, Becky Browder Neustadt of New York City, N.Y., Dr. Timothy Marshall Browder of Boston, Mass., and Kevin Lee Browder of Lewisville; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Ardmore Baptist Church. Burial followed at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte.
Barbara May DeBonis
Barbara May DeBonis, 88, of Winston-Salem died February 14 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born November 29, 1918, in North Billerica, Mass., to Harry and Annie Bailey Botsford. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Michael A DeBonis, in 1998.
Surviving are three children, Richard D. DeBonis of Middlebury, Vt., Judy Roberts of Advance and Joan Trottier of Lewisville; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Pearl Hughes of Poultney, Vt.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be held at the family plot in Vermont at a later date.
