Libbie Blizard Wood Hill
Libbie Blizard Wood Hill, 74, of Winston-Salem died March 10. She was born November 17, 1931, in Forsyth County to the late Everette E. and Minnie Louise Cale Blizard. She was retired from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, and after retirement worked with Sun Printing Co. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon L. Hill, and a son, Bucky Wood.
Surviving are five children, Vicky Williams and husband Vernon of Lewisville, David Wood and wife Teresa of Lewisville, Sharon Smith and husband Philip of Kernersville, Karen Lathum and husband Tim of Winston-Salem and Mark Wood and wife Marie of Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Marguerite “Marge” Fultz and husband Warren of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Richard “Ed” Blizard of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Sandra Bovender officiating. A private graveside service was also held.
Alfred Bynum Kiger
Alfred Bynum “Shorty” Kiger, 87, of Germanton died March 10 at Forsyth Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born on September 23, 1918, in Forsyth County, the son of Francis Marion and Sarah Westmoreland Kiger. He was a member of Red Bank Missionary Baptist Church in Germanton and had served as a church deacon for a number of years. He had retired from Hanes Knitting Co. in Winston-Salem. His wife, Emma Lucille Kiger, preceded him in death in 1987.
Surviving are his daughter, Pamela Coone and husband Ronnie of Lewisville; a son, Alfred Dean Kiger and wife Betty of Spartanburg, S.C.; two grandsons, Todd Kiger and Ronald Coone Jr.; two great-grandchildren; and a special friend and companion, Mrs. Dora Lee Shouse of Rural Hall.
Funeral services were held at Red Bank Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. David Coburn officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Max Neal Moore
Max Neal Moore, 83, of Heritage Woods Senior Living in Winston-Salem, formerly of Kannapolis, died March 8 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Union County on August 12, 1922, to Jesse L. Moore and Lela Cuthberson Moore. He served in the Army Air Force in World War II and was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 39 years, retiring in 1983 as superintendent of mail. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Kannapolis, a member of the American Legion and the honorary “40 and 8” of the American Legion. He was preceded in death two years ago by his wife of 64 years, Eunice Sloop Moore; two brothers, Harold and Herman Moore; and two sisters, Hallie Adcock and Willard Funderburk.
Surviving are a daughter, Kaye Stockton and husband Perry of Clemmons; a granddaughter, Stephanie Stockton Smith and husband Robert Smith of Huntsville, Ala.; a great-granddaughter, Perri Makenzie Smith of Huntsville; and a sister-in-law, Lucille Tice of Kannapolis.
Funeral services were held at Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel in Kannapolis with Rev. Norman Brisson officiating. Burial followed at Carolina Memorial Park.
Spc. David Nelson Timmons Jr.
Spc. David Nelson Timmons Jr., 23, of Lewisville was killed in action on May 5 in Kabul, Afghanistan, in a helicopter crash, along with nine of his comrades. He was born June 18, 1982 in Winston-Salem. He attended the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools and was a graduate of West Forsyth High School class of 2001. He attended Forsyth Technical Community College and was employed at Chuck E. Cheese’s Restaurant and Skate Haven USA Skating Rink. He later decided to join the U.S. Army. On January 3, 2004, he entered into basic training at Fort Knox, Ky. On February 10, 2006, he departed his base and was sent to Afghanistan for 18 months with an anticipated leave in October 2006.
Surviving are his parents, David and Cynthia Timmons; a sister, Shalanta’ D. Timmons, of the home; grandfather James Timmons and wife Patricia; a special uncle, Lance Christler; a host of other uncles, aunts, great-uncles, great-aunts, cousins and other relatives and friends; and a very special, devoted friend, Dulce Amor of Toronto, Canada.
Funeral services were held at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem with Rev. Donald Salley officiating. Burial with full military honors followed in Salisbury National Cemetery.
Francis Eugene Hunter
Francis Eugene Hunter, 85, of Clemmons died May 17 at Bermuda Terrace Nursing and Rehab Center. He was born January 18, 1921, in Forsyth County to Wesley Clyde Hunter Sr. and Grace Strupe Hunter. He was a member of Clemmons Moravian Church and a graduate of Clemmons High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. He was retired from John Morrell Co. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Hampton Hunter.
Surviving are a brother, Wesley C. Hunter Jr. and wife Hill of Winston-Salem; a sister, Betty H. Lawrence of Clemmons; two nieces; two nephews; and a special friend, Nancy Kiser.
A graveside service was held at Clemmons Moravian Church graveyard with Rev. Ray Burke officiating.
Richard James Johnson
Richard James Johnson, 69, of Clemmons died May 16 at his home. He was born July 13, 1936, in Detroit, Mich., to Roy and Margaret Johnson. He served in the U.S. Navy and had a degree in electronic engineering. He worked for Unisys Corp. for 34 years and H&R Block for seven years. In his spare time he was a woodworker, making clocks and furniture and framing pictures.
Surviving are his wife of 44 years, JoLynn; three daughters, Jodi Howell and husband Beau of Suffolk, Va.; Peggy Renegar and husband Derek of Lewisville; and Caroll Hodgson and husband Bryan of Linwood; two grandsons, Avery and Reid Hodgson; and a brother, Frank Johnson of Avoca, Mich.
A memorial service was held at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church.
Edith Grey Bailey Allen
Edith Grey Bailey Allen, 70, of Mocksville died May 16 at Bermuda Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation in Advance after a lengthy illness. She was born May 4, 1936, in Davie County to the late Clarence and Cletta Waller Bailey of the Fork community. She spent most of her adult life as a mother and a homemaker. Before her illness, she had worked at Wal-Mart in Mocksville for 10 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy; an infant daughter, Kimberly; a grandson, Jamie Hoots; a sister, Diane Smiley; two brothers, Jackie and Johnnie Bailey; her mother and father-in-law, Clyde and Pauline Allen of Mocksville; and a sister-in-law, Shelby Hutchens.
Surviving are her children, Betty Hoots and husband Brad of Advance, Denny Allen of Mocksville and Janet Graham and husband Doug of Salisbury; five grandchildren, Wendy Horne and husband Jason, Crystal Allen, Tiffany Allen, Nicole Cozart and husband Willie and Chelsea Graham; five great-grandchildren, Mason, Nathan and Owen Horne, Bryceson Cozart and Ayden Horne; nine siblings, Lillie Mae Potts and husband Virgil of Advance, Katharine Burnette of Virginia Beach, Va., Judy Sherrill and husband Larry of Mocksville, SandraCraver and husband Joe of Clemmons, Anita Myers of Jonesville, Harold Bailey and wife Mae of Lexington, Cecil Bailey and wife Mae of Lexington, Charles Bailey of San Diego, Calif., and Glenn Bailey of Arcadia; five sisters-in-law, JoAnn Barney and husband Tony of Mocksville, Jane Sammons and husband Dwight of Cooleemee, Peggy Gaither and husband Butch of Mocksville, Glenda Allen of Salisbury and Darlene Naylor and husband Dale of Mocksville; and a brother-in-law, Fred Allen and wife Ann of Cooleemee.
Funeral services were held at Eaton Funeral Home. Burial followed in Turrentine Baptist Church Cemetery.
Margaret Louise Haynes Ramey
Margaret Louise Haynes Ramey, 77, of Rural Hall died May 15 at her home. She was born in Surry County on November 10, 1928, to Franklin Pierce Haynes and Foy S. Barker Haynes. She was a longtime member of Rural Hall Church of God, where she was active as long as her health permitted. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Fannie Lou Lyons; and a brother, William C. Haynes.
Surviving are a daughter, Jolene Ramey Maynard of Sunset Beach; a son, Bruce Ramey of the home; a granddaughter, Jodi Maynard Daye and husband Eddie of King; a great-grandson, Jordan Edward Daye; two sisters, Gladys Hopkins and Betty Ann Cave, both of Mount Airy; five brothers, Claude A. Haynes of Galax, Va., Banner F. Haynes of King, Wayne R. Haynes of King, Russell L. Haynes of Clemmons and Franklin Haynes of Low Gap; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Funeral services were held at Rural Hall Church of God with Pastor Rick Hudson officiating. Burial followed in Crestview Memorial Park.
John Moorefield
John “Elmer” Moorefield, 90, of Walnut Cove died May 15 at his home. He was born in Stokes County on May 19, 1915, to the late John Will and late Fannie Hicks Moorefield. He was a member of Northview Primitive Baptist Church in Sandy Ridge. He enjoyed working in his garden and giving the neighbors his time to help them with his jack-of-all-trade skills. n addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ola George and Mattie Mitchell; and two brothers, David and James Moorefield.
Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Lucy “Merritt” Moorefield, of the home; two sons, Joseph “Joe” Moorefield and wife Sharon of Lewisville and Wayne Moorefield and wife Cheryl of Salisbury; four grandchildren, Wayne Jr. and wife Ginny, Heather, Kristen and Daniel Moorefield; two stepgrandchildren, Jason and Jeff Hughes; and a sister, Dorothy Wood of Virginia.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall with Elder Milton Gunter officiating. Burial followed at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall.
Michelle Ann Bates
Michelle Ann Bates, 47, of Lewisville, a reservation agent for Piedmont and US Airways over the past 18 years, died May 14 in Laurel, Md., of complications from a gastric bypass surgery performed more than two years ago. Until her surgery in 2004, she had been a resident of Lewisville. Born in Washington, D.C., she grew up in Reston, Va. While residing in Lewisville, she was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons.
Surviving are her daughter, Veronica, and her sister, Lara Steward, both of Richmond, Va.; husband Dean of Ridgeway, Va.; and her parents, Mary Ann and Lawrence Paszek of Reston.
Memorial services were held at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Reston. Burial followed in Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Herndon.
Mary Alberta Brandon Sparks
Mary Alberta Brandon Sparks, 85, died May 18 at Village Care of King. She was born September 4, 1920, in Clemmons to the late William Franklin and Nannie Lucinda Lawrence Brandon. She was a member of the Church of Christ at Boyers and at Tucker Street and was a retired employee of AT&T. She was a past volunteer at Forsyth Medical Center. She was preceded in death by three husbands, Lewis M. Reid, Lester “Leck” Branson and James Sparks.
Surviving are three daughters, Ann Reid and husband Tommy McKenzie of King, Carol Reid and husband James Ivey of Winston-Salem and Sue Reid and husband Chris Cook of Ridgeland, S.C.; three grandchildren, Casi Murdaugh, Trey Hayes and Annette Sexton; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Linda Massengill and husband Don of Clemmons and Betty Alexander and husband Herb of Advance; and five brothers, Robert Brandon and wife Mag of Clemmons, Larry Brandon and wife Carolyn of Lewisville, Bill Brandon and wife Yvonne of Clemmons, Gilbert Brandon and wife Wila Mae of Advance and Wayne Brandon and wife Gwenda of Clemmons. Funeral services were held at Voglers Reynolda Road Chapel with James Percival and Lawrence Warden officiating. A Graveside service followed at the Church of Christ at Boyers Cemetery in Clemmons.
Henry Davis Fleming Sr.
Henry Davis Fleming Sr., 92, of Elkin died May 18. He was born November 25, 1913, in Yadkin County to the late Julius Oscar and Sue Fletcher Fleming. He was a farmer and a member of Boonville United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Fleta Boyd Fleming; daughter Phyllis Fleming Stroud; three sisters, Grace Fleming Patterson, Wilena Fleming Brown and Frances Fleming Adams; and two grandchildren, Ayers Webster and Gary Kirk.
Surviving are his children, Jane Webster and husband Given of Camden, S.C.; Sue Fleming Alem of Greensboro; and Henry Davis Fleming Jr. and wife Kathy of Gold Canyon, Ariz.; two sisters, Myrtle Fleming Wells of High Point and Mary Ruth Fleming Rutledge of Yadkinville; nine grandchildren, Rana Alem Kaplan of New York City; Samir Alem of Greensboro; Barry Kirk of East Bend; Lamar Harrison of Clemmons; Linda Harrison of Leicester; Boyd Webster Jr. of Huntsville, Ala.; Davis Fleming of Huntsville, Texas; Matthew Fleming of Charlotte; and William Fleming of Washington, D.C.; 10 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Boonville Cemetery with Rev. Jenny Stewart and Rev. Marion Swann officiating.
Conrad Livingston Jr.
Conrad “Sandy” Livingston Jr., 61, of Winston-Salem died May 14 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born February 5, 1945, in Copperhill, Tenn., to Conrad R. Livingston and Martha Tarpley Osmann. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 40 years of service in the 91 machine shop. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps serving in the Vietname War, followed by active service in the Army Reserves. He was a member of AmVets, American Legion Post 55, the 40/8, Fleet Reserve Association, the Marine Corp League 1075, the VFW and Disabled American Vets. He was actively involved with Clemmons Masonic Lodge No. 755 AF&AM and the Winston-Salem Shrine Club, serving as both past master and past president. He was also captain of the Desert Rangers, a member of Twin City Eastern Star and driver for Barefoot Transportation. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tania Dawn.
Surviving are his wife, Patsy Rutherford Livingston of the home; two daughters, Denise L. Bowman and husband Greg of Lewisville and Sandra L. Carmack and husband Scott of McKinney, Texas; two grandchildren, Garrett (“Jr.”) Bowman and Makenna Carmack; and a sister, Nelda L. Potter and husband Glenn of Kinston.
A Masonic graveside service was held at Farmington Community Cemetery with Bill Teague officiating, with military rites by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard.
Mary Whitlow Smith
Mary Whitlow Smith of Winston-Salem died May 18 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a short battle with cancer. She was a kind, gentle and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter and sister. She was very much loved by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her father, Reid Whitlow.
Surviving are her husband, Floyd C. Smith; her four children: Gregory Scott Smith and wife Collette of Utah, Mary Carol McCoslin and husband Richard of Salisbury, Ann Alberts and husband Brad of Clemmons, and Sherrie Smith-Craft and husband Wayne of Winston-Salem; her mother, Margaret K. Whitlow; her sister, Suzanne Loflin; and her brother, Tommy Whitlow, all of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her husband’s family, sister-in-law and best friend Geneva Mathis; brothers-in-law Bill Smith and Jimmie Smith; many nieces and nephews; and her church family at Pinedale Christian Church.
Funeral services were held at Vogler’s Main Street Chapel with Bill McKenzie, Bob McCaskill, Jerry Mathis and Skip Broome officiating. Burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons.
Louis Edward Davenport
Louis Edward Davenport, 91, of Winston-Salem died May 21. He was born in Plymouth on June 4, 1914, to the late Louis R. and Ida J. Davenport. He retired from Lincoln National Life Insurance Co. and Home Security Life Insurance Co. after 46 years of service. He received Life Insurance “Man of the Year” in 1960. He served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was an active member of First Christian Church, where he served as an elder and chairman of the stewardship and finance committees. He was a member of Piedmont Civitan Club. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Elizabeth Davenport.
Surviving are his wife, Francis Teague Davenport; a son, Richard E. Davenport, and wife Sandra of Clemmons; a daughter, Mary Louis Murphy and husband Jack of Charlotte; two brothers, Lomer and Milton Davenport, both of Plymouth; a sister, Marie Bandy of Auburn, Ind.; six grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at First Christian Church with Dr. Mike Simpson officiating. Burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park with the VFW Memorial Honor Guard officiating.
Barbara Harper Hiatt
Barbara Harper Hiatt, 76, of Clemmons died July 10 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born November 11, 1929 in Forsyth County to John Benbow and Nelle Woosley Harper. She was a charter member of South Fork Church of Christ. She graduated from Lewisville High School in 1947. She lived the past four years at The Elms at Tanglwood. She was preceded in death by her father; a brother, Max Harper; and a sister; Leota Barringer.
Surviving are her husband of 59 years, M. Lindy Hiatt; a son, Michael L. Hiatt and wife Diana of Nashville, Tenn.; a daughter, Jolene H. McKenzie of Mocksville; four grandchildren, Jason Hiatt, Alison Wright and husband Mick, Matthew Hiatt and Adrienne Gray; her mother of Clemmons; two sisters, Mary Ellen H. Dull and Eva H. Sidden; and a brother, Gary Harper.
Funeral services were held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons with Rev. Charles Belch officiating.

Mary Ann Cain Smith
Mary Ann Cain Smith, 74, died July 9 at Britthaven Nursing Home in Kernersville after a struggle with cancer. She was born in Guilford County on March 17, 1932, to Everet and Nithiel Cain. She married Paul Francis Smith in 1980. She retired from AT&T with 32 years of service. She had been active in the Business and Professional Women’s Club and Winston-Salem Homemaker’s Extension. She was a member of Cottage Street Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Surviving are her husband, Paul Francis Smith of the home; daughter Tracy Smith Meroney and grandson Lee Thomas Meroney of Clemmons; special cousins Sue Briggs of Walnut Cove, Becky Puryear of Wadesboro, Jo Lean Beruth of Barnesville, Margaret Ann of Canton and Wilson and Fay Long of Kernersville; and very special friends Violet Todd and Ruth Ellen Charles.
A graveside service was held at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with Elder James Percival officiating.
Christine Donley Harmon
Christine Donley Harmon, 71, of Winston-Salem died July 9 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born in Greenbrier County, W.Va., on December 25, 1934, to the late Robert Lee Donley and Mary Harris Donley. She worked for Bahnson Co. for over 25 years and for Wachovia Bank for eight years. She was a faithful member of Freeman Street Baptist Church and a member of the Moose Lodge. She was preceded in death by her brother, Damon Donley.
Surviving are a daughter, Gail Evans of Winston-Salem; son Howard Harmon Jr. and wife Rhonda of Houston, Texas; a grandson, Scott Harmon, also of Houston; sisters Bobbie Yarbrough and Aileen Enscore, both of Winston-Salem; brothers James T. “Buddy” Donley of Winston-Salem, Bernard Donley of St. Louis, Mo., Doug Donley of Walkertown and Billy Donley of Clemmons; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Freeman Street Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Whitaker officiating. Burial followed in Parklawn Memorial Gardens.
John Dennis Fleshman
John Dennis Fleshman, 48, of Lexington died July 11 at Thomasville Hospital. Born on July 21, 1957, in Union County, W.Va., he was the son of Norman Lenzy and Margaret Ann Grimmett Fleshman. He was the owner and operator of Fleshman Floor Covering. He attended Hillcrest Baptist Church of Winston-Salem. He was also a special friend to many churches and pastors. He was preceded in death by his mother.
Surviving are his wife, Joy Fleshman of the home; a daughter, Michelle Fleshman and fiance Joseph Cross of Lexington; a son, Philip Fleshman of Lexington; his father and stepmother, Norman and Adabelle Fleshman of Rainelle, W.Va.; three brothers, Len Fleshman and wife Janet of Clemmons, Paul Fleshman and wife Connie of East Bend and Mark Fleshman and wife Julia of East Bend; 21 nieces and nephews; a great-niece; a great-nephew; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ernest and Louise Parks of Lexington; three brothers-in-law, Daniel Parks and wife Sandra of Clarksville, Ind.; David Parks and wife Debra of Lexington, Ky.; and Philip Parks and wife Randy of Tyler, Texas; and two sisters-in-law, Sharon P. Russell and husband Calvin of Winston-Salem and Paula P. Antonelli and husband Ralph of Lexington.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Elders Ernest W. Parks, Daniel E. Parks, David S. Parks and Philip C. Parks officiating. Burial followed at Parklawn Memorial Gardens.
Ronald Ray Lemmons
Ronald Ray “Ronnie” Lemmons, 58, of Winston-Salem died July 15 at his home. A native of Forsyth County, he was the son of Lucille Linville and Charles Albert Lemmons. He had been employed with Sara Lee Corp. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Charles Albert Lemmons, Jr.
Surviving are his wife, Sarah W. Lemmons of the home; daughters Kimberly Welch and husband Kenny of Asheboro and Amber Mabry and husband Ray of Liberty; sons Wayne Lemmons and wife Dena of Winston-Salem, Ashley Lemmons and wife Tonya of Asheboro and Todd Lemmons of Clemmons; sister Shirley Booe and husband Jerry of Kentucky; brother Donald Gray Lemmons of Winston-Salem; granddaughters Angie Lemmons, Angel Lemmons, Stephanie Loflin and husband Allen, Bailey Mabry, Courtney Mabry, Taylor Lemmons and Brooke Lemmons; and grandson Andrew Lemmons.
