Paul Douglas Noblitt

Paul Douglas Noblitt, age 37, of Old Fort, died November 17, 2003 at his residence.

Born in McDowell County to Paul Junior Noblitt and Judy Vess Noblitt, he co-owned and operated Mitchell Glass, in Spruce Pine, NC.

He is survived by his spouse, Debbie Hogan, of the home; his father, Paul Noblitt of Florida; his mother, Judy Noblitt, of Florida; maternal grandparents, Calvin and Ruby Vess of Old Fort; paternal grandmother, Ethel Whiteside Noblitt; maternal great grandmother, Pearl Foster: and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Services will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2003, in the Old Fort Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, at 11 A.M. with the Rev. John Stewart Vess presiding. The family will receive friends Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at Old Fort Chapel, from 6 PM until 8PM. Burial will follow the service at Davistown Cemetery.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Nora Jeanette Harris

Nora Jeanette Harris passed away peacefully on Friday evening, February 27, 2004 at Rutherford Hospital. Miss Nora was born August 8, 1914 to Ulysses Grant Harris and Sophronia Harris Harris. She lived her entire life in the Montford Cove Community of McDowell County.

She attended schools in McDowell County, but due to her mother’s illness was forced to withdraw from school. At the age of 75, she earned her G.E.D.. from Isothermal Community College and participated in their commencement exercise. She was the olded student to receive her G.E.D. She dedicated her life to caring for her invalid parents, as well as other family members. She was a member of Montford Cove Baptist Church, and was a great historian. Many came to her for guidance in both family and community history. It was often said that her mind was greater than any other around when it came to remembering local family and historical events.

She was a homemaker and gardener who loved to cook and entertain, but never married to start a family of her own. However, she devoted her life to taking care of others. After many years of devoted service to her extended family and community, she moved to Carolina House of Forest City, an assisted living community, due to failing health. While at Carolina House, she participated in many activities, made many new friends, and left a legacy there as well.

Other than her parents, Miss Nora was preceded in death by 4 brothers, Burpee, Hobart, George, and Jones, as well as one niece and 4 nephews, Thurman Harris, Marvin Harris, Clarence Harris, Bertie Hemphill, and Jim Harris.

Miss Nora is survived by two nieces, Emma Davis and Selana Huskins, both of Marion. She is also survived by 15 great nieces and nephews, including Linda Harris Wall, Debie Davis McGaha, and Nellene Harris Ledbetter, who helped care for Miss Nora during her final years. She is also survived by 20 great great nieces and nephews and 19 great great great nieces and nephews. Although Miss Nora will be greatly missed, she will never be forgotten, and is now rejoicing with her loved ones in Glory.

Services will be held 3:00 o’clock Monday, March 1, 2004 in Montford Cove Baptist Church with Rev. Bobby Gettys and Rev. Ray Holland officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 at Kirksey Funeral Home where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Mrs. Estelle Vaughn Morgan

Mrs. Estelle Vaughn Morgan, 84, of Marion, died Monday, July 5, 2004 at her residence.

Born Sept. 25, 1919 in Rutherford County, she was a daughter of the late Joe Willy Vaughn and Etta Roe Conner Vaughn. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Morgan was also preceded in death by her husband, George Julius Morgan; a son, Julius Garland Morgan; five brothers, Garland, Lee, H.D., Jack and Rosal Vaughn; and one sister, Hessie Mostiller. Mrs. Morgan was a member of the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Her life was spent caring for others. She loved her family, her church and her friends. She was in bad health since 1968. She loved to piece quilts and read.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Morgan Elliott and husband, Roger, of the home; two sisters, Lucy Whitson and Bessie O’Quinn, both of Marion; five grandchildren, Michael Elliott, David Elliott, Timothy Elliott, Lisa Ridao and Lori Cooper. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Morgan will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 8, 2004 at the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Upton officiating. Interment will follow at the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, July 7, 2004 at Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of McDowell County, 218 Logan St., Marion, N.C. 28752.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Brianna Lee Hamrick

Brianna Lee Hamrick, infant daughter of Danny Lee Hamrick and Ashley Nichole Bishop Hamrick, of Nebo, was born Saturday, January 15, 2005 and passed away Saturday, January 15, 2005 at Mission Hospital, Asheville.

In addition to her parents, Brianna is also survived by her parental grandmother, Dianne Bernal, of Nebo; Maternal grandparents, Mikki & Shirley Bishop, of Stockbridge, GA; Maternal great grandparents, James & Wynette Bishop, of McDonough, GA; An aunt, Lisa Smith, of Old Fort; And an uncle, Edward Hamrick, of Nebo.

A Memorial Service will be held for Brianna 9:00AM, Thursday, January 20, 2005, at the Nealsville Church of God with the Reverend Douglas Carpenter officiating.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Margaret Elizabeth Wright Guinn

Margaret Elizabeth Wright Guinn, age 79, of Marion, died January 12, 2003 at Park Ridge Hospital, Fletcher, N.C.

Born in Wallace, Virginia to the late Roy Homer and Mary Magaline White Wright she was a retired dietician with the North Cove School. She was a life-long member of Peppers Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. George W. Guinn.

Surviving are one son, George Washington Guinn, III of Marion; 3 daughters, Pat Cantey and Margaret Gibson both of Marion, Rebecca Harrill of Asheville, N.C.; 3 brothers, Wylie Wright and Donald Wright both of Bristol, Va., Paul Wright of Winchester, Va.; 2 sisters, Betty Hurley of Bristol, Tn., Helen Hale of Minnesota; 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 14, 2003 in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home with Rev. Lee Cook and Rev. Tyler Martin officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:00 prior to the service. Interment will follow 3:30 p.m. in Glenwood Cemetery – Bristol, Tn.

Memorials may be made to: Peppers Creek Baptist Church, c/o Ann Cook – 34 Cardinal Lane – Marion, N.C. 28752.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Mr. Miguel Emiliano Ortiz

Mr. Miguel Emiliano Ortiz, 23, of Marion, died, Sunday, June 29, 3003, due to injuries sustained in an auto accident. Born January 27, 1980, in Berlin NH, he was a son of Fred and Susan Labonville Ortiz, both of Marion. Miguel was employed by McDowell Employment Security Commission and the Corpening YMCA. He was a Suma Cum Laude graduate from Mt. Ida College, Boston, Mass., with a degree in Interior Design and Architecture. He planned to attend Law School in the fall of 2003.

In addition to his parents, Miguel is also survived by his parental grandmother, Rose Ortiz, of Longmont, Colorado; A sister, Angela Ortiz, of Marion, NC; A niece, Farrah Ortiz, of Marion; And several Aunts and Uncles.

A memorial Service will be held 3:00PM, Thursday, July 3, 2003, in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Mrs. Myrtle Harding Buchanan

Mrs. Myrtle Harding Buchanan, 58, of Marion, died, Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at her residence.

Born December 3, 1945, in McDowell County, she was a daughter of the late Emory Harding and Lissie Jones Harding, of Marion. In addition to her father, Mrs. Buchanan was also preceded in death by a brother, Willie Dean Harding. Mrs. Buchanan was a member of the World Wide Church of God.

In addition to her mother, Mrs. Buchanan is also survived by three sons, Rickey Jaynes, David Jaynes and Chris Buchanan, all of Marion; two daughters, Donna Secore, and Dawn Gibson, both of Marion; one brother, Alvin Harding, of Mt. Home, NC; two sisters, Inez Brewer, of Marion, and Patricia Dockery, of Morganton; five grandchildren, Justin Jaynes, Ashley Gibson, Kayla Gibson, Angel Hunt and Heaven Hunt; also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Buchanan will be held 1:00PM, Friday, March 12, 2004, in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion, with the Reverends Mike Zullo and Phil Murdock officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of McDowell County, Inc., 218 Logan Street, Marion, NC 28752.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Mrs. Jodie Benfield Barrier

Mrs. Jodie Benfield Barrier, 82, of Causby Road, Morganton, joined her husband, Elmore, on August 3, 2004. She was born October 13, 1921 in Avery County and was the last direct descendent of Tom and Zellie Benfield.

She retired from Broughton Hospital, Dietary Department with nineteen years of service. After retirement she enjoyed working in her flowers and feeding birds. She especially loved hummingbirds.

She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elmore Barrier; sisters, Ethel Benfield and Doris Williams; brothers, Lawrence Benfield and Lambert Benfield.

She is survived by her daughter, Betty Propst of Morganton; sons, Allen Barrier and wife Paulette of Morganton, Robert (Bob) Barrier and wife, Jean of Marietta, GA, Charles Barrier and wife Linda of Morganton; grandchildren, Jerald Propst, Sr., Monica Keller, Paula Hunt, Martha Jo Barrier, Charles W. Barrier, all of Morganton; Emily Keener of Woodstock, GA and Jennifer Penley of Wareham, Mass and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday at Kirksey Memorial Chapel with Rev. Larry Thompson officiating. Interment will follow the service at the George H. Barrier Cemetery in Jonas Ridge. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at 577 Causby Road, Morganton.

Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton is assisting the Barrier family with arrangements.

You Chang Hang

You Chang Hang, 87, of Morganton, died January 23, 2005 at Grace Hospital.

Mrs. Hang was born January 10, 1918 in Laos and was a daughter of the late Bla Yao Chang and May Lee Chang.

She was a homemaker and affiliated with the First Hmong Alliance Church.

Services for Mrs. Hang will be held in the Kirksey Memorial Chapel on the following days; Friday, 5:00 until 8:00 PM; Saturday, 9:00 AM until 12 Noon and 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM; Sunday, 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM . Interment will be Monday, January 31st at the Mount Lawn Memorial Gardens in Boone following a brief service in the Kirksey Memorial Chapel at 9:00 AM.

She is survived by her sons, Chia Chu Hang, Nha Lee Hang, Boua Sy Hang; Xao Yang Hang; her daughters, Phoua Hang Yang, Pang Hang Xiong, La Hang Yang, May Hang Kue, Soua Hang Kue and brother, Yeu Hang Yang; 180 grandchildren; great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Services for Mrs. Hang are under the direction of Kirksey Funeral Home and Cremation Service.

Georgia Mattie Davison Largin

Georgia Mattie Davison Largin, 90, of Old Fort, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, June 22, 2005, at Laurels of Summit Ridge in Oteen, NC. Born April 25, 1915, in McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late George Walter Davison and Janie Sykes Davison. She was a member of Catawba View Baptist Church where she served as a member on the Usher Board and also as a member of the Missionary Union. In addition to her parents she is also preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Lee Largin, Sr.; three sons, Oscar Lee Largin, Jr., Thomas Eugene Largin & Robert Steven Largin; one daughter, Carrie Sue Johnson; and three sisters, Louise Hausley, Ethel Lytle & Rosie Moore.

Ms. Largin leaves behind to cherish her memory five sons, David Largin of Asheville, NC, Loyde Largin of Orange, TX, Johnny Largin and wife, Mildred of Asheville, NC, Clifford Largin of Germany & Charles Johnson of Asheville, NC; two daughters, Ruth Largin and husband, Rickie of Asheville, NC & Janet Coalfield and husband, Emerson of Austin, TX; twenty-one grandchildren; thirty-three great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Ms. Largin will be held 2:00PM, Wednesday, June 29, 2005, at Catawba View Baptist Church, with the Reverend James Lytle officiating. Interment will follow at Campground Cemetery in Old Fort. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
