His accidental death occurred as the group was felling timber for firewood. Jack considered himself a lifelong resident of the Bitterroot Valley. Though he had also lived for a time in Butte, Anaconda and Deer Lodge, his heart was always home.
Jack attended school and participated in sports in the Darby area. It was here that he met Nona Campbell and shortly before he entered the Army in 1953, they were married
. After his discharge, he returned to Montana and began working for the ACM Company as an overhead crane operator in Anaconda. During one of the many strikes he endured during these years, Jack began working in the logging industry.
In the early 70's he was divorced and after a time married
Brenda Hermenston. Through the years he began driving a truck and doing some long-haul work which he continued until retiring in 1996.

It was a joy for him to introduce others to these sports and he delighted in their successes. Jack had many varied interests including aviation, photography, animal husbandry, skiing and gardening. He was a bit of an adventurer and an experienced backwoodsman who loved the solitude and beauty of the high mountain lakes and an early fall snow. He enjoyed designing and manufacturing custom knives and also doing leather work. His many talents were just now gaining the time and attention they deserved.
Dad was a loving father and proud "Papa" to 16 grandchildren whom he loved taking on hikes, teaching them the love of nature and God's creations, just as he had taught his children. His influence and presence will always be with us. He will be greatly missed.
