Alvin Joseph 'Joe' Irion
BROADUS - Alvin Joseph "Joe" Irion, age 85, of Broadus, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at the Holy Rosary Health Center in Miles City.
Joe was born on May 27, 1913, at Cheap Hill, Tenn., the son of Alvin Joseph and Mary B. (Pardue) Irion. Except for the few weeks that he spent in Tennessee where his mother returned for his birth, Joe's life was spent in Montana. Until he moved to the Powder River Manor in 1995, he lived on the family ranch which his father homesteaded. At a young age, he learned the cowboy ways and rode on the roundups with his father.
Joe attended school in Broadus, at the Irion School on the Mizpah, and then went to high school in Miles City. When he was in his teens, he worked for the LO on the roundups and as a horse wrangler and a bronc rider. In 1934-35, Joe carried mail on horseback from Corral Crock to the mouth of Mizpah Creek. Along with his father and brothers, he was in the business of raising and breaking thoroughbred horses for the U.S. Cavalry. Horses were trailed from the ranch to Fort Keogh and to Arvada, Wyo. Joe was familiar with all the country between the Powder River and the Tongue River, having ridden it all on horseback.
On July 3, 1940, Joe married
Helen Linville in Miles City. During the years that followed, they raised cattle, sheep, horses, hay, and alfalfa seed on their ranch, which they acquired with hard work and perseverance. The couple had one daughter, Bonita Jo.
Joe was a member of the Eagles and the East Fork Roping Club. He enjoyed ranching, roping, hunting, trapping, and reminiscing about the old days. He also enjoyed baseball, playing cards, bowling, and helping his friends and neighbors. Joe played baseball with the Olive, Mizpah and the Red Devils Teams.
Joe is survived by his wife Helen L. of Olive; a daughter, Bonnie Quade and her husband Ted, of Olive; one sister, May Paque, of Port Orchard, Wash.; two sister-in-laws; Helen Y. Irion, of Broadus; and Mary Ann Irion, of Miles City; two grandchildren; Brad of Billings, Stacey of Olive; and numerous nieces and nephews.
